24.01.2022 Are you frustrated with Learner Drivers? Hey, give them a chance! After all, we were all beginners once. I had to sit in the middle seat as a child, and that meant I spent the whole time observing how to drive, but even years of watching didn't prepare me for the thrill of that first lesson. Have you been observing others exercising or taking an art class or doing something new? What was your reaction? ... A common response is "I could never do that", and part of that is the response of our inner perfectionist, wanting to do it right first time, or else its a "fail". My teacher Bruce Frantzis likes to say "don't let the Great get in the way of the good". Enjoy being a beginner, remember what it feels like to learn something for the first time. Class - Tuesday night 6.30pm @ 5 Pelham St Coorparoo. Class size will be limited to 8 spaces to ensure your comfort - please contact me to confirm attendance. Thanks, Hugo.

23.01.2022 I know it sounds dull, but when you boil it all down, your day consists of breathing, lying down, sitting, standing, moving, and interacting with others. There are qigong exercises designed specifically for all of these activities. Its your choice whether you practice none, one, or many of them. ... BUT whether you practice qigong or not, you STILL have to deal with your own energy and that of others on any given day. Having abundant and balanced energy is your birthright. It enriches your own experience in life, because when you sit, lie down, stand, move and interact with others you are MUCH more aware of how energy flows, both inside you and between you and others. Starting a qigong practice - even one a simple as deep, relaxed breathing - can reacquaint you with your energy, build it up, and balance it out. Isn't it time to "wake up" to the energy that plays out in life?

23.01.2022 Hi All - tickets are already selling for the upcoming Dragon & Tiger Workshop. Come along, or share with any friends you feel could benefit from getting their energy moving!! Thanks, Hugo

22.01.2022 In Taoist qigong the season is very important in guiding your qigong or tai chi practice. Being winter currently (in Australia), its very important to keep well within your energetic limits - 50% is good enough. Moving energy through the nerves is enough, don't exhaust them. Stay relaxed. My teacher Bruce Frantzis explains on the link below....Happy practicing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFTH5F40k5M

21.01.2022 Been stuck in traffic recently? Its amazing to watch your reaction when you are being held up - even in the relative comfort of your car. It starts with curiosity ("I wonder what has happened"), then doubt ("I wonder how long we'll be stuck"), then confusion ("Am I in the right lane? Is there another way?), then frustration ("Where are the towtrucks?) and then anger/rage ("C'MON!! GET A MOVE ON). ... And then you get through the jam - and what happens then? It starts with relief ("Thank GOD that's over), then gradual relaxation ("Well, that wasn't too bad), and pretty quickly you forget all about it ("Now, whats for dinner?"). If you're in pain your energy is blocked like a traffic jam. Your thoughts and emotions will follow the same trajectory as described above. The key is to recognise the cause, and not deny it/suppress it. If you practice exercises like qigong and tai chi, you bring awareness to the pain so you release the imbalances that brought it about. This brings relief, relaxation and eventually you forget you even had pain in the first place... If you are interested in learning qigong or fundamentals of tai chi, please visit the Innerchi website (www.innerchi.com.au). Thanks, Hugo

20.01.2022 There is no way around it - sitting at a desk all day causes havoc on posture, and stiffness around the shoulders is the hallmark symptom. It is why getting a shoulder massage, or even just rolling your shoulders around, always leads to a contented sigh of relief. The arm movements of Dragon & Tiger qigong are designed to originate in the shoulder blades, and as you practice you will notice that they are always in relaxed movement. This gradually softens the tension in the sh...oulders. Why not come to an Innerchi workshop this weekend to learn this great too for self-healing - http://www.innerchi.com.au/workshop Thanks Hugo

20.01.2022 Here is an article on Dragon & Tiger qigong, which is what we practice at Innerchi. For more information check out the Innerchi website innerchi.com.au http://spiritualityhealth.com/ar/chronic-illness-try-qigong

20.01.2022 What happens when your energy is blocked? Consider the attached photos. When a creek is blocked or has insufficient water flowing through it, the water within it stagnates and all sorts of colourful (and smelly) side effects come to life. When the water is free flowing, the water is clear and transparent and free from blockages.... Dragon & Tiger qigong is specifically designed to move energy through the acupuncture meridians, to assist with breaking down blockages and discharging stagnant energy. Is it time to get your energy flowing? Why not try this for yourself? Please visit workshop page on the Innerchi website (innerchi.com.au) to register your interest for the upcoming beginners workshops for Dragon & Tiger qigong. Thanks - Hugo

18.01.2022 Quantum physics has shown that matter is simply a certain vibratory rate of energy - so at the sub-atomic level we are all just energy. This fundamental principle is forgotten in the hard realities of life. Qigong exercises are specifically designed to build awareness of energy, to move it, to boost it, and to balance it. ... If we are energy, then why not bring more into your life? Why not come to an Innerchi workshop this weekend to learn this great tool for self-healing - http://www.innerchi.com.au/workshop Thanks Hugo

18.01.2022 Well Innerchi has been hibernating and practice has been very soft and restorative during the winter months. Its a great time to come back into the body with a focus on breathing, standing, the first movement of Dragon & Tiger qigong, and opening the energy gates of the body. Check out www.energyarts.com for more information on these incredible exercises. I will be posting shortly about Spring training for those interested in either establishing or furthering their qigong practice. Take care, Hugo

17.01.2022 When practicing Tai Chi or qigong, there is an emphasis on relaxed movement. It is this emphasis that sets it apart from the exercise systems predominately used (and popularised) in the West. My teacher Bruce Frantzis of Energy Arts has some great material on the foundations of your practice, and physical relaxation is one of these. I have attached a link to the video but the key points are: Problem - "Tension is involuntary" - for a lot of people, tension is so ingrained th...at your tai chi/qigong practice will be tense. Even in daily living, if you check in with yourself you might see that you carry tension - sore shoulders, sore back, etc. Solution - "Let go of your strength in your movements to relax your body" I have found this simple idea to carry enormous impact in my personal practice, as it allows energy to flow effortlessly to where it is needed. In daily living, this also translates to mental activity - instead of using strength (straining, pushing, desiring) see if you can act without it, and how that feels. http://www.youtube.com/watch

16.01.2022 Once again, a huge thanks to all those who attended the Beginners Workshop on Saturday. There was quite a bit to get through but we got there!! I will post the details of the next workshop shortly. Best regards, Hugo

I am very excited to announce the dates of the upcoming Dragon & Tiger workshops at Soul Space @ Newmarket. The workshops will introduce you to the Dragon & Tiger qigong set which is designed to build and balance your energy via improved circulation. ... Beginners Workshop - this covers the remaining 4 movements of the D&T qigong set, and brings all 7 movements together. The dates of the workshop are: Intro Workshop - 18th May Beginners Workshop - 31st May Please save the dates and I will post more information shortly. Regards, Hugo

14.01.2022 Do excuses rule your life? How often do you say "I am not good enough, not smart enough, not qualified"? Or when you feel the need to get fit you say "I don't have time to exercise, the gym is too expensive, the last diet didn't work". When it comes to qigong, there will be excuses. Let me explode a few myths for you: ... * Its against my religion - despite coming from a Taoist/Buddhist tradition, the aim of qigong is purely practical - to build balanced energy for good health. * I don't do martial arts - like tai chi, qigong is a solo practice, done slowly and within 70% of your full capacity. * I'm too old/young - you are never too old or young to start. Abundant balanced energy is your birthright - reclaim it. * Its too hot/cold to practice outdoors - then practice indoors. Qigong practice is largely stationary, and is easily practiced indoors. * I don't have the time to practice - Consistency is key. Can you do 5 minutes a day? You can practice in front of the tv - whatever it takes, you can find time. Don't let excuses rule you - catch them when they come up. See what they are blocking you from achieving in your life. Take action and the world opens up for you.

13.01.2022 Do you relax when you are on holidays? One of key things I have noticed when I take a break is that it quite often takes a few days of "winding down" before I can truly enjoy the time off. Allowing yourself time to wind down and gather your energy is a critical and often overlooked part of your qigong/tai chi practice. ... It ensures that your energy is settled and nerves are relaxed, which in turn means that you can integrate and store what you have built during your practice. Don't treat your practice like its work - enjoy it like a holiday. Class - Tuesday night 6.30pm @ 5 Pelham St Coorparoo. Class size will be limited to 8 spaces to ensure your comfort - please contact me to confirm attendance. Thanks, Hugo.

13.01.2022 Can't start? Or can't stop? Apathy and desire appear to be in opposite of each other, but can impact on you in the same way. Weekends are always a great time to observe apathy in action - that little voice telling you not to get up and enjoy the morning's practice, but to keep sleeping. I'll do it later. And on and on, until you start berating yourself for not practicing when you are about to go to sleep. ... Desire can be just as wasteful, in that you are pushing, striving, rushing through your practice. Or alternatively, you practice for a long time to make up for previous missed practices from the weekend. You wear yourself out, and wonder what happened. As my teacher Bruce Frantzis likes to say, the world can go crazy but you don't have to. The best way to find balance is to be consistent in your practice, and your awareness. Keep and ear out for that subtle little voice that says "I can't", "maybe later", or "if I just do THIS then..." Class - Tuesday night 6.30pm @ 5 Pelham St Coorparoo. Class size will be limited to 8 spaces to ensure your comfort - please contact me to confirm attendance. Thanks, Hugo.

13.01.2022 A wonderful article on the health benefits of Tai Chi as exercise and healing practice. http://www.telegraph.co.uk//Tai-chi-is-the-perfect-antidot

12.01.2022 Hi All Bruce Frantzis will be teaching a short course in Sydney in January 2016. This is a rare opportunity to learn from a genuine master of qigong. If you have the means, I highly recommended that you take the opportunity to attend. The link below will take you to the event booking page.... http://www.energyarts.com//energy-gates-qigong-taoist-brea Regards, Hugo

12.01.2022 "No one is going to hospital for a relaxation attack." This is a quote from my teacher Bruce Frantzis from his book The Chi Revolution. Its so true, and yet relaxation has all sorts of negative connotations in a world geared to "giving 100%", and endless distractions afforded by technology.... We say "relax" to calm people down when they are uptight. We allow ourselves to relax after all our hard work. But it seems we don't make it a central part of our lives - what would it be like if we did? I was reminded during the week of the importance of relaxation over form when practicing qigong. Tension shuts your energy down, relaxation allows energy to flow. It sounds simple, but we are conditioned both in our working lives and in exercise to strive, strain and push. Remember: only going to 70% of your capacity will make your practice safe and relaxed. PLEASE NOTE - this Tuesday night 6.30pm will be the last class @ 5 Pelham St Coorparoo. I will keep you posted regarding the new venue and timing. Thanks, Hugo.

11.01.2022 Want to reduce stress? Stress starts as a resistance to taking action in your life. This "blocked" action gets stored in the body as tension, and that tension leads to increased mental activity, and more stress. Go around that merry-go-round a few times, and you are on the way to frayed nerves, illness and exhaustion. "RELAX!" people say, but that just gets you more wound up. ... "Have a drink" say others. This is one of many ways to escape, but is that really a solution? As my teacher Bruce Frantzis said "Relaxation is not just a mood change - it is something very tangible within the body" So, here are three ways to beat it... Firstly - remember to breathe. Deep, relaxed breathing will bring immediate relief. Secondly - gentle exercise. Get outside for a walk (in nature if possible). Do something that relaxes you. Qigong exercises are specifically designed to relieve tension and stress in the body, to restore frayed nerves, and to bring balance back in your life. Thirdly - become aware of any resistance, be it a sensation in the body, or resistance to activities in your life - what are you avoiding? What action needs to be taken? What must end to stop the stress cycle? Please visit the Innerchi web page (www.innerchi.com.au) for more detail on qigong exercises, and contact me if you wish to take action and reduce stress in your life. Thanks, Hugo

09.01.2022 Are you struggling for motivation? Its funny how some things you do without a second thought - like brushing your teeth (although getting kids to commit to this can be hard!!) Other things, particularly more complicated tasks or activities that are physically or mentally demanding, take more willpower or require rewards for action.... Simply knowing about something is not enough - thinking about exercise is not enough to get you fit. Using rewards or pushing through with willpower quite often leads to burnout. The optimum activity is one you experience gradual, incremental improvements - signs of progress - in your practice. These improvements will keep you coming back for more. One of the great pleasures of practicing qigong is that from your first foray, through to the culmination of years of practice, you should notice small, regular improvements to your health, energy and mental clarity. The key to this is starting with the basic elements, and slowly building more detail as you go along. Once you "lock-in" to this process in your qigong practice, you can apply it to daily life.

08.01.2022 Too much pudding? Working off the Xmas excess via hardcore workouts in the gym may not be the best idea, and in fact could result in stress or injury if you have been completely inactive during the period. Why not try a more relaxed and comfortable way? Here, one of my teachers Bill Ryan explains and demonstrates Dragon & Tiger Qigong, which is the form I teach at Innerchi. ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBl72pEi6jc This year I will be holding weekend introductory workshops for those who cannot attend the regular classes (which start again tomorrow.) Class - Tuesday night 6.30pm @ 5 Pelham St Coorparoo. Class size will be limited to 8 spaces to ensure your comfort - please contact me to confirm attendance. Thanks, Hugo.

07.01.2022 Do you like to do it outdoors? Qigong practice takes up very little room, so can be practiced anywhere. But practicing outdoors exposes you to the elements, the seasons and the energy of nature. Just this morning I practiced in moderate wind, cloudy skies, and the birdsong of the early morning. It was very peaceful. A few weeks back at the same time of morning it was hot, muggy and oppressive. ... The changeable elements of nature gives your practice that unique flavour. It also gives you the chance to explore your own energy and how it relates and reacts to nature. If you are interested in learning qigong, I am starting an outdoor class in the Brisbane CBD Botanic Gardens on a Tuesday (12 noon) for 1 hour. Cost is $10. This replaces the Tuesday night class, which I have had to cancel. I will soon be offering new introductory workshops held on a Saturday/weekend, I will post the details in the coming weeks. Thanks Hugo

06.01.2022 New year's "resolutions" are the flavour of the month, but when you think about it, are we actually RESOLVING anything? These resolutions - new job, lose weight, etc - are usually the expressing of a inner desire for something new, rather than taking action to resolve something old that we continue to hold on to. In Taoist energy practices (qigong, tai chi and meditation) the focus is on identifying stuck or stagnant energy in the body, and then releasing/dissolving it into ...space, so that energy can flow smoothly and strongly again. Dragon & Tiger qigong is a great way of building energetic awareness, and releasing stagnant energy. Why not make this year's "resolution" something very achievable and long lasting? Class - Tuesday night 6.30pm @ 5 Pelham St Coorparoo. Class size will be limited to 8 spaces to ensure your comfort - please contact me to confirm attendance. Thanks, Hugo

06.01.2022 Big thanks to all of those who attended the Intro workshop yesterday - it was a really enjoyable day, and it was pleasure to work with you! I look forward to completing the training with you on the 31st. All the best, Hugo

06.01.2022 Don't you just hate it when things don't turned out as expected? My qigong teacher Bruce Frantzis likes to say "have any expectation, and all that can be said is that anger and frustration will be your constant companions". There are two levels at play here. Firstly, if you have an expectation ABOUT your practice, then you are constantly judging DURING the practice - and lets face it, its never as "perfect" as we want it to be. So that's one source of unnecessary anger or f...rustration, and potentially stops regular practice. Secondly, and perhaps more subtley, by having an expectation you close yourself to the possibility of experiencing something new. This applies to people who think they "get it", and never consider that there may be more depth to it. Anger in this case only reveals itself after weeks, months or years of practicing at one level only to find that deeper levels existed, if you aware and open enough to look for it. Don't let expectations stop you from practicing, or indeed, prevent you from even beginning. Take that first step. Class - Tuesday night 6.30pm @ 5 Pelham St Coorparoo. Class size will be limited to 8 spaces to ensure your comfort - please contact me to confirm attendance. Thanks, Hugo.

06.01.2022 There's an old saying "the bigger you are, the harder you fall". Rather than just the obvious message on a physical level, its real use is in reminding us of humility, and the importance of a beginners mindset. The past few days I have met with people and have read stories about success and failure in any given practice. The key point that keeps coming up is - as soon as we identify ourselves with the level of expertise we have, we become more judgmental of our efforts. ... We become "bigger" and by doing so, this opens ourselves to the concept of failure - I call it a concept because that is what it is. It is not performing to expectations set by either ourselves, or "others". And if we don't meet these expectations, the "fall" can be hard. A beginner's mindset allows you to experience something new in repetitive practice, be it in qigong, exercise, business or indeed personal relationships. It also keeps you grounded and humble. A beginners mindset starts every day, in everything, not just your qigong practice. Try it and see for yourself.

03.01.2022 There's nothing like sitting through a long car trip to remind you about the importance of circulation. At the magical two hour mark, all of a sudden you start shifting and squirming, trying to get the blood flowing through your butt cheeks which by now are nicely numb. The relief when you finally get to stand up and stretch is nearly as satisfying as reaching the destination! It doesn't take much of an imagination to see the impact of a sedentary lifestyle on your body. Qigo...ng belies its gentle nature with exercises specifically designed to boost and improve your circulation. Why not try qigong and discover this for yourself? I am hosting an introductory workshop on the 18th May, continuing on the 31st of May. Please visit workshop page on the Innerchi website (innerchi.com.au) for more information and to register your interest. Thanks - Hugo

03.01.2022 "Tis the season to be jolly" - yes, we are in the run down to Christmas, and here in Australia it is really starting to warm up. It is important to be aware of seasonal influences when engaged in your practice. Just looking at nature in summer, you can feel that warmth and expansive feeling. For those of you practicing qigong or any physical activity in the summer months, I encourage you to tap into that expansiveness as a means of boosting or replenishing your own inner ener...gy. This week's class will be the last for 2013, with classes to resume Tuesday 7th of January. Class - Tuesday night 6.30pm @ 5 Pelham St Coorparoo. Class size will be limited to 8 spaces to ensure your comfort - please contact me to confirm attendance. Thanks, Hugo.

02.01.2022 Hi All - if you are interested in qigong but want to "dip your toe in the water" before taking a class, please check out the Dragon & Tiger online training program on the Energy Arts website. The online training is all shot in HD, and you have lifetime access to the material. Bill Ryan (the trainer) is highly experienced and "keeps it real" - no jargon, no mystery, just clear and precise instruction. You can take it at your own pace, and even short, regular practice can make a big difference. I have been practicing Dragon & Tiger for over 10 years now, and it has helped with my health and well-being in many ways - injury management, stress release, breathing, balance and flexibility. I highly recommend it (and am doing the expanded training online as we speak!)

01.01.2022 If everything old is new again, then why isn't qigong well known and understood in the Western world? The most common question I get from people when I talk about qigong is "what is it??". The answer they seem to understand best is "its kinda like the component parts of tai chi". People seem to get hung up on the name - which is bizarre, given that the fitness industry has all sorts of weird and wonderful names (Zumba, PX90, etc).... The key things to note about qigong: * It is safe for people of any age, or level of health * Focuses on relaxation, rather than intensity/striving - a perfect counter to stress. * You can learn the movements easily * You can practice as little as 5 minutes a day At Innerchi, I teach Dragon & Tiger qigong - it consists of 7 simple movements which are designed to move energy through the main acupuncture meridians (used in traditional chinese medicine). For a look at the form, check at the attached video by Senior Energy Arts Instructor Paul Cavel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-g0bGWDgIk

01.01.2022 If you were challenged to cover as much distance as you could in 48 hours, would you start with a flat out sprint? The fitness/exercise industry always pushes you to "give 100%". And on the flip side, the diet/health industry always pushes you to "quit now" - i.e. cut the carbs, quit smoking etc etc. Whats interesting is that when we are asked to give 100% or told to go "cold turkey", burnout and/or a lack of motivation become the key reasons that a person quit the gym, or fa...iled in their diet, etc. Qigong is a LIFELONG practice - so there is no way you can rush into it, and in fact, that striving just leads to...you guessed it, burn out and lack of motivation! The central tenet of Taoist qigong practice is to practice at 70% of your capacity. This allows you to be relaxed in your movements, to ensure that you are not damaging your body, and allows the space to accommodate your own energetic health (i.e. you can practice when sick or in optimum health). Play the long game - always practicing, a little at a time, and well within your limits.
