16.01.2022 Feeling cheesy? Try this treat 8 individual part-skim mozzarella cheese sticks 2 tsp. olive oil 2 TBSP sesame seeds... 2 TBSP poppy seeds 2 TBSP flax seeds tsp. salt 1 tsp. pepper 1 tsp. onion powder cup Italian-style bread crumbs 1 egg 1 TBSP water cup whole wheat pastry flour Cut cheese sticks in half, into approximately 5 cm sticks. Put cheese pieces onto a plate and place in the freezer until very firm, about 30 minutes. Cover a small tray with waxed paper. Line a baking sheet with foil, and grease lightly with olive oil. Set tray and baking sheet aside. Combine sesame seeds, poppy seeds, flax seeds, salt, pepper, onion powder and breadcrumbs in a small bowl. Beat egg with water in another small bowl. Place flour in a third small bowl and set aside. Once cheese pieces are frozen and firm, dip each one into the flour, shaking off the excess. Then dip into the egg mixture, then roll in the seed-breadcrumb mixture until thoroughly coated. Place on the waxed paper-covered tray and repeat with remaining cheese pieces. (Note You will probably not use all the flour or the seed-breadcrumb mixture). Place cheese sticks in the freezer for one hour. (Note: Once cheese sticks are coated and frozen, you can bake them right away, or you can store them in a covered container in the freezer to bake at another time). When ready to bake, place the foil-covered baking sheet in the oven, and preheat the oven to 200 degrees. When the oven has reached 200 degrees, place the prepared cheese sticks on the hot, oiled baking pan. Bake for 3 minutes until very lightly browned, then turn cheese sticks over gently and bake another 2-3 minutes, watching closely. The cheese sticks will soften, but remove from the oven before they melt. Serve with marinara sauce or mustard. Makes 8 servings.
