02.01.2022 We are hearing reports of some facial eczema cases in the state currently. Facial eczema is a liver damage disease caused by the toxin from a fungus on pastures. It grows rapidly in weather conditions like we have just experienced, such as warm nights, humid weather and rain. The toxin blocks the bile ducts in the liver and as a result can cause photosensitisation of stock. The skin peels off in areas such as the udder, teats, mouth, nose and pale coloured skin. Other symptom...s include irritability, cows seeking shade, being difficult to milk, lowered milk production and inflamed reddened udders. Once prevalent the condition cannot be treated, however there are measures that can be taken to prevent facial eczema in your herd. These include, adding a source of zinc oxide to your grain or pellet ration. To find out more call Daniel or Stacey our qualified nutritionists who can advise what course of action you may require.
