14.01.2022 The joy of #nestbox monitoring!! #Nestboxes are designed to target a specific species but can sometimes provide a home for an unlikely visitor. Here is a #Kooma...l / #CommonBrushtailPossum that has bunkered down in a cockatoo nestbox. This was one of the exciting discoveries made last month with the fabulous ‘Friends of Nyaania Creek’, with whom we were privileged to spend a morning checking nestboxes installed with Glen Forrest Primary School in 2016! This monitoring session was made possible thanks to a local resident whose kind donation meant we could provide a hearty morning tea to feed the hungry helpers! 13.01.2022 A #nestbox doesn’t always lead to new life - sadly it can have the opposite effect & take life away. Improperly designed #nestboxes that are not monitored regul...arly can be a death trap, as seen here in the first 2 images: 1) 26 bird carcasses were recovered from inside this old pvc nest box because the internal ladder, made from wood, was chewed away by #galahs. The second image shows a dead duck that was unable to scale the coarse mesh ladder that is well suited to #blackcockatoos, but not smaller species. We have found numerous ducks & also microbats & small parrots dead in similar circumstances. What’s the solution, you may well ask? Think outside the box!! All nest-boxes should be designed both for the target species & others that may enter them while prospecting for possible nest or roost sites. Ladders should be made of fine mesh wire that cannot be chewed & caters for the climbing needs of all creatures great & small! #humanimpact #ecology #nestboxing #therecycologyproject #wastetowildlifehabitat #sustainability #recycling See more

11.01.2022 Wood you?! #We are so grateful to volunteers in the community who donate raw materials to our #recycology project. ‘From waste to wildlife habitat’ is our motto... and this old pergola is NOT destined for the fireplace! Rather it will be used to furnish our cockatoo #nestboxes as sacrificial chew posts. These pieces of wood, placed both on the entrance & inside cockatoo nest boxes, are an essential resource for #blackcockatoos who splinter small pieces of wood from them to create a well drained substrate on which they lay their eggs. They also help us monitor the boxes because we can see these chew marks from the ground! 10.01.2022 #TheRecycologyProject visited Mater Christi School in #Yangebup this week to deliver a possum box workshop, which was funded by the fabulous @cityofcockburn. Th...e council were also responsible for the wonderful possum bridge that allows the furry locals to move safely from one side of a busy road to the other. These #owls make their homes in a range of places around Perth and can be happy in suburban digs! Pictured here is a new resident in a #nestbox we installed mid year near Jandakot. This stunning nocturnal #raptor was pretty impressed with the new #recycology nest box & took up residence within a few weeks! 09.01.2022 The best thing you can do in life is learn to see the past & the future simultaneously. An altered perspective is key. And one way to do this is to learn to #climbtrees (the best thing I ever did as a kid!). . Last night, a decade ago, At @atfilms shot this during the making of #AWedgedTale, a 25 minute film made for our MSciComm thesis. It is a fictional narrative film (not a documentary) which means the story (script) was written well in advance, so the shoot involved '...collecting' the shots which were assembled following the 'recipe' later. But what we couldn't script was the immense biodiversity we encountered & this became a feature of the film. Candice, Mel, Grant & Veronica (who has just completed work experience with us (well done V!) donated a day to check a bunch of cockatoo boxes & found several pairs of Carnabys Cockatoos breeding successfully in boxes in @shireofmundaring reserves. 07.01.2022 Guess who made this #nest?! A picture of the busy little builder can be seen by swiping left. This is our first record of a #Djobooldjobool #WesternThornbill ne...st that was constructed INSIDE a nestbox! It’s a gorgeous little construction furnished with an assortment of #feathers (guess the shiny one’s owner?!) & fine bits of plant down & grasses. In over 300 records of Western #Thornbill #nests, most were constructed in Balga foliage or behind peeling #Eucalypt bark. 03.01.2022 Handful of little quackers!! I’m sure you have noticed that it’s duckling season... so special to see these little families out & about. These #pacificblackduck... ducklings were rescued by Simon from a nest box that didn’t have an appropriate internal ladder. Yes, these ducks DO use #nestboxes & they require a finer gauge mesh to use as a ladder to emerge when the time is right. Having #simoncherriman @aquila84wa on call... lucky duckies! See more

We are looking forward to sharing a unique perspective from up in the trees & down in... the hollows (both artificial & natural, of course)! . 01.01.2022 3 weeks! 3 weeks is all it took for this #nestbox to be claimed by its current #carnabyscockatoo residents! This box was installed in response to Black Cockat...oo prospecting activity in the area. It’s often assumed that ground based activity, for example a busy noisy family will deter these birds from nesting. This box is only 10m from a house & these birds couldn’t be more settled!
