24.01.2022 Everything You Need To Know About Security For WordPress

23.01.2022 So with the downturn in business caused by covid-19, some businesses are getting creative and redoubling their marketing efforts. One of our clients sent me an email today offering some new services BUT the way they did it actually bent and maybe even broke a few laws... You see, they sent an unsolicited email to a group of people, myself included, promoting their services.... What they should also have done is explain why I was receiving the newsletter Im guessing I got it because Im a previous customer... They also forgot to include Unsubscribe instructions or an Unsubscribe link in the email a definite no-no. You see we have a thing called the Spam Act 2003 which outlines how to correspond with your clients using email. The Act lives here https://www.legislation.gov.au/Series/C2004A01214 And some guidelines for email live here https://www.acma.gov.au/avoid-sending-spam Now Im actually guessing they sent the email using a blind Carbon Copy (bcc) list as the email comes from a computer in their office. This means they are emailing via their work Internet service but here's the thing: Internet services providers take a dim view of this type of mail-out because that's often what "script kiddie" spammers do, and this can impact normal email services. Here's what they should have done: 1. Created an account with a newsletter provider like MailChimp. MailChimp is free up to 2000 recipients (or it was last time I looked) and it automatically includes the Unsubscribe link and you can also track email opens which is useful for marketing and follow ups. There are a host if other such services including Constant Contact, Infusionsoft, and many others with varying degrees of complexity. 2. Upload their list of email addresses to a list called Everybody. This will be a one-use, disposable list Ill explain why shortly. 3. Create an email inviting everybody to join your real mailing list called, say, Newsletter which is now your approved mailing list. These people have now given you permission to email them. Explain to them that this is a one-time email and they are receiving it because they have done business with you in the past. Also tell they why they should be on your mailing list (what will you talk about, how does it benefit them, etc). 4. Send your future newsletters to the Newsletter list only. The Everybody list should never be used again and, ideally, should be deleted. Future recipients can now unsubscribe if they want but, better still, youll stay off the spammer blacklists which means there is a much higher likelihood ALL your emails will be delivered including your business ones. You'll also be able to see who opened your emails and how many times - if that number is high, might be worth inviting them for a coffee.. Hope you find this helpful

17.01.2022 Are you compliant? A client rang me earlier today with the best news. His business requires accreditation with NATA, a national testing body, and they regularly perform audits. He rang with the news that, not only had he passed the audit with flying colours, but that the auditor was "totally blown away" by the system I had developed with him.... If being audited keeps you awake at night, click the "Call Now" button on the insilico Facebook and let's build a system that'll make your auditor happy, too!!

07.01.2022 So today was something different - a client's website (not built by us) was totally owned by a series of scripts that eventually displayed a page saying that "your PC has been infected - do not reboot or switch it off. Call this 1800 NUMBER now" After a few hours we managed to clean it off but this script was EVERYWHERE!!! Injected into the footer, injected into Pages and Posts - EVERYWHERE!!! In our case it was loading a script called "db.js" which then loaded another script... and then another until finally the warning screen. If you get a screen like this, open a new tab and download MalwareBytes from https://www.malwarebytes.com/, close your browser and run this program. It'll help clean things up. Oh, and if you know the site owner, maybe give them a heads up...

07.01.2022 We recently introduced an new support ticketing system which allows clients to email their problems to us. Here's the response from one of them: "...you were my favorite IT guy anyway, but this is even more impressive Well done!!!"... #clientsatisfaction #lovemyclients See more

02.01.2022 One of the most useful things about having worked in IT for over 30 years is that I can see problems that are not so obvious. In this case, the database application was running very, VERY slowly when more than 3 or 4 people were logged in. Originally things were pointing to the database software but after discussing the problem with the network engineer we were able to identify a failing switch as the culprit.... A few $100 later and now the database runs like it did on day 1! Do you have software problems that your IT people can't solve? Book a call now to see if we can help https://www.insilico.com.au/schedule-strategy-session/ #experiencepays #hardwareandsoftware #alittleknowledgeisuseful

01.01.2022 This month we have seen a rise in the number of hacks and attacks on websites. These occur because websites are built using software such as WordPress and, just like the software on your computer, they need to be protected from those people with way too much time on their hands. To protect your self from these attacks, there are 3 steps to take:... 1. Maintain your website software - keep all the parts up to date. Each new update contains bug fixes, patches for vulnerabilities, and new features. 2. Monitor your website - have tools in place that constantly monitor your website for intrusions and other anomalies. 3. Manage your website backups - this is the first place you'll need to go should you be hacked or attacked. If you need any help with any of these things, leave a comment or question below this post and we'll tell you what we think. And if this technology stuff is all too much for you, we have management and maintenance solutions for every budget. Just leave a comment below or click the Messenger button if you'd like a private chat...
