24.01.2022 What are the attributes of an empathetic leader? 1. Perspective: You can see the world through someone else’s eyes, and you listen to them. 2. Listening without judgement: When you take on the perspective of someone else, you lose any judgement you might have. 3. Recognising their emotions: You do not need to feel their emotion with them and get involved, you just need to demonstrate that you understand.... 4. Communicating understanding: Show the person that you understand where they are coming from so that they feel heard. Empathy requires leaders to give up on their own concerns and join someone in their upset. It does not mean that you fix the problem, it means that you show them that you hear them Integrity and Values run a variety of leadership programs, through which, you can learn to lead with empathy. 24.01.2022 Great problem-solvers leverage these four mindsets when faced with difficult problems: 1. Curiosity: Approaching problems with curiosity can create more options and steer you away from traditional answers and into more creative territory. 2. Tolerate ambiguity: Challenge solutions that imply certainty; embracing imperfection can lead to more effective problem-solving. 3. Pursue occurrent behaviour: Examine what is actually happening instead of predicted situations. ... 4. Leverage collective intelligence: Draw on diverse experiences and expertise that is not your own. What tactics do you leverage when solving difficult problems? At Integrity and Values, we deliver a variety of leadership development programs to empower leaders and drive them to make changes in their organisations. 23.01.2022 What does it look like to work with a sense of urgency? Working with a sense of urgency means implementing these five behaviours: Pay attention: Be attentive about what is happening right now and constantly check in with yourself and others about what is going on in the business.... What are you paying attention to now? If you are not paying attention to what needs to move forward in your business, then you do not know what is going to happen next. Hold people to account: Give your employees a timeline for when something needs to be done and follow up on their progress. Lower your tolerance level: If you demonstrate low tolerance and leniency, you create an environment that facilitates complacency. If you want a sense of urgency inside of your business, lower your tolerances. Have a clear strategy: Without a clear strategy, you do not know what to have a sense of urgency about and what tasks need to be done now. Creating a sense of urgency means that you have your eye on the future and you are clear about where you are going and your strategy is immovable. 15.01.2022 What is the difference between empathy and sympathy in leadership? Sympathy is feelings of pity and sorrow for someone’s misfortune. It occurs because it can be difficult to confront the feelings of others, and as leaders, we may feel inclined to encourage employees to leave their things at the door. You cannot expect this of your workforce. They arrive as whole people and leave as whole people. As a leader, you have to confront their upset and listen to them with empathy. Sy...mpathy is about you and not about them. If we sympathise with people, we turn them into victims. We turn them into helpless people when this is not the reality. When you offer assistance, it should be done from a position of empathy, wherein you keep the person in their upset and work with them to find a solution. It is not productive for you to be the hero and fix the problem for them. Integrity and Values offer a Leadership Profile, which measures empathy among other traits. 12.01.2022 Why honesty should be at the centre of company culture When we think of the saying ‘Honesty is the best policy’, we usually think of morality or ethics. While this is true, honesty is also a constructive course of action for building your company and its culture. Employing dishonesty may feel convenient in the moment. In reality, each lie is a compromise of your integrity and can become a bad habit if you do not commit to holding your people, and yourself, to a higher standar...d. It is the job of the leader to emphasise the importance of honesty over harmony or appearances. A delay may look bad. What is worse, is delivering something to the company, or the public, with mistakes that could have been avoided. As a leader, you have to hold yourself to the same standards of honesty as your team. You have to demonstrate that you hold yourself to account as well. Our upcoming webinar is about ‘Truthfulness and the Hidden cost of lies’ in business.
