25.01.2022 League Queensland is weathering the Coronavirus like everybody else in Queensland but we will continue printing our normal magazine every month until November. We are big into the ‘History of the Game in Queensland’ so our main focus until the competitions get back up and running will be historical content. Our Issue 28 which is out now includes stories about the Brisbane Broncos winning the 1992 premiership, Norths Devils and their ‘Class of 2002’ which included Billy Slat...er, Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk, Dallas Johnson and another six players who went onto the NRL. We also write about Mackay Brothers in their 100th year, Bowen Rugby League, Townsville winning four Foley Shields in succession, why the Gold Coast Titans must remain in the NRL, heaps of stuff about the North Queensland Cowboys, 1951 in Bundaberg when two of their players made the Australian team and last but not least, the first 15 years of the game in Queensland. 23.01.2022 #PriceysPerspective on the Brisbane Broncos In their 20 games of 2020 they conceded a massive 624 points at 31 points a game while scoring a miserly 268 points at around 13.5 a game. The question that the bookmakers and punters are asking themselves as they set the board for 2021 is, ‘Are they really that bad?’ What is going to change in 2021 that will take the last placed team into finals contention? Anything is an improvement from last place, but it will be a mighty perfo...rmance to move them eight places up the ladder with basically the same roster. MC is the answer. That’s ‘Milford and Confidence’. It was tragic watching Anthony Milford playing in 2020, he simply had no idea. The two best five-eighths in Australian Rugby League are Jack Wighton (Canberra Raiders) and Cameron Munster (Melbourne Storm). Daylight is third. They are everything that Milford was not in 2020. Brutal in defence and devastating in attack. They run at the line with the ball in two hands and make the opposition question themselves in defence. If either Wighton or Munster were wearing Broncos colours they would be Top-4 contenders, but the Broncos have to play with the cards they have been dealt so Kevvie Walters will have to pull every trick he knows out of the hat to get the "C" back into "M". Walters has given himself two experienced coaching assistants in John Cartwright and Terry Matterson, both were great forwards in their own right and will go a long way to restore confidence at Red Hill. If the Broncos can win half of their first 12 games, they will have an easier run home with seven of their last ten games at Suncorp Stadium. On the debit side they play Storm, Rabbitohs, Panthers, Roosters, Parramatta, Titans and Sharks twice. Conclusion It will not be easy. The critics will be watching with interest. The spine is still not decided with Tommy Dearden and Jake Turpin the only certainties in my opinion yet Walters has gone with Brodie Croft in round one to partner Milford. The jury is out on either Tesi Niu or Jamayne Isaako at fullback. I feel that Kevin Walters and the success-starved Broncos fans will lift their team into equal 8th position alongside the Sea Eagles on 258LQ points but geez, it won’t be easy.

23.01.2022 Is 2021 going to be the Year of the Titan? The Gold Coast Titans boys came alive at the back end of the 2020 season under Justin Holbrook and won their last five games to finish a creditable 9th after winning the dreaded wooden spoon in 2019. Under the guidance of Holbrook players like Ashley Taylor, Brian Kelly, AJ Brimson and Jamal Fogarty took their game to another level as the Titans proved to be the best of the three Queensland-based teams. The Titans top-17 looks stro...ng in 2021 with David Fifita (Broncos), Tino Fa’asuamaieaui (Storm) and Herman Ese Ese (Knights) bolstering a pack that already includes Kevin Proctor, Mitch Rein, Jarrod Wallace and Moeaki Fotuaika. The Titans have depth for the first time for many seasons with quality players like Tanah Boyd, Treymaine Spry, Corey Thompson and Tyrone Peachey all very capable first grade replacements. Conclusion - I feel with an injury free season the Titans are contenders and League Queensland has given them 261 points which would put them in 5th position in my premiership ladder in front of the punters price of $17.00 which is the 7th betting line.

22.01.2022 Manly Warringah Sea Eagles finished an injury plagued 2020 in 13th position on the ladder but the bookmakers see them fighting for a top-8 spot in 2021. League Queensland feels that their season will depend on the fitness of Kieran Foran and the Trbojevic brothers. The combination of Foran and Daly Cherry-Evans would be the most skilful and experienced in the NRL and with Foran on the park they will be a danger for any team. Manly has the ability to make the top-8 but depth w...ill be their biggest enemy. An injury to Cherry-Evans, Foran or the ‘Turbo’s’ could spell disaster for the north of the harbour team. Conclusion League Queensland feels that Des Hasler is the man who could take the Sea Eagles into the 2021 finals and as long as they keep a strong spine together, we give them 258LQ points which would see them fighting the Broncos for the last spot in the top-8.

22.01.2022 In October we called on a number of schools including St Edmund's College, Ipswich, St Thomas More College, Sunnybank, Padua College Kedron (Official) and Marsden State High School to present a copy of our new book 'More Than Just a Game - A History of Rugby League in Queensland'. One of the things we try to do at League Queensland is spread the good word about the game of rugby league far and wide. Thanks to the support of the following partners, we will continue to delive...r our new book to secondary school's across Qld: QRL - Queensland Rugby League Brisbane Broncos Deadly Choices CNW Electrical Wholesale CFMEU Mining & Energy Brothers Leagues Club Townsville See more

21.01.2022 The recently held Townsville Brothers Rugby League Reunion was a huge success as was Tony Price's 300 page book, written to celebrate their 100th year in the Townsville Rugby League competition. Great to see QRL - Queensland Rugby League Chairman, Mr Bruce Hatcher in attendance amongst 430 guests. "A History of the Townville Brothers Rugby League Club 1919 - 2019" is available for purchase from the Brothers Rugby League Townsville or by calling the club on 0747738000. The cost of the book is $60.00 (soft cover) or $70.00 (hard cover) plus postage if required.

21.01.2022 Parramatta Eels had a great 2020 season finishing 3rd but were knocked out in straight sets in the finals. They have lost five good players in George Jennings, Brad Takairangi, Kane Evans, Andrew Davey and Daniel Alvaro while picking up Tom Opacic, Keegan Hipgrave and Bryce Cartwright. The Eels need Mitchell Moses and Reed Mahoney on the field at all times to be any kind of threat and will be hoping Blake Ferguson finds some form this season. Ferguson, who has averaged more t...han ten tries a season for more than ten years, only crossed on four occasions in 2020. Conclusion The Eels have lost too much talent for my money and League Queensland’s rating of 256 points puts them out of the Top-8 in 10th position in 2021. 21.01.2022 North Queensland Toyota Cowboys must have high hopes for 2021 after a very disappointing 14th finish in 2020. Although they have the same roster as 2020 the big gain is a fully fit Michael Morgan going into round one as the team depends on his guidance. A new year, a new stadium that hardly saw a spectator in 2020, a new coach and hopefully for the Cowboys fans, a new attitude for the North Queensland team. A fit Michael Morgan, Valentine Holmes and Scott Drinkwater will go a... long way to seeing a competitive Cowboys team on the paddock while Josh McGuire has to stay on the field to ensure his team are contenders. A Cowboys pack that includes McGuire, Jason Taumalolo, Jordan McLean, Coen Hess and Tom Gilbert should be a handful for any opposition, but they must bring a harder attitude to the paddock to handle the top-4 teams. The only team in the NRL with worse defence that the Cowboys in 2020 was the much maligned and talked about Brisbane Broncos. The Cowboys leaked 27 points a game which will be Todd Payten’s biggest challenge. The bookmakers have elevated the Cowboys up to the 11th line of betting but that won’t cut the mustard for the long-suffering Cowboys fans. They want to see the Cowboys in the top-8 and that is where League Queensland sees them at season end. Conclusion The Cowboys depth is better than 2019 and 2020 with a host of young players starting to make their mark in the big league. League Queensland gives them 259LQ points which will see them finish the season in seventh spot on the ladder.

21.01.2022 Cheers 7NEWS Mackay for covering our Books into Schools presentation at Stadium Mackay last Friday. Thank to Mackay Regional Council, CNW Electrical Mackay, and CFMEU Mining & Energy for their support of our Books into Schools initiative for the Mackay area.

20.01.2022 This is our 30th edition of ‘League Queensland’ magazine and we are now midway through our fifth season and what a season it has been with the competition starting, stopping and restarting under Coronavirus conditions but like the game has always been, it’s resilient. In this issue we talk about the possible introduction of another NRL club in Queensland and I ask the question, ‘Have we got the players?’ We also do another segment of the book we are bringing out in late October. It will be a beauty at 380 pages and more than 500 photographs. Issue 30 also has stories about Michael Morgan, Herbie Farnworth, Jamal Fogarty, Pat Carrigan, Col Weiss and the fact that ‘State of Origin’ was a New South Wales idea!!! Read all about it.

18.01.2022 IT’S 40 years since the mighty men of Mount Isa first won the prestigious Foley Shield, but as long as rugby league is spoken about in the bush the deeds of the ‘Men from the Isa’ will be enshrined in rugby league history. See this month's issue of League Queensland for a great feature (sponsored by Queensland Country Credit Union ) on the Mighty Men of Mount Isa.

15.01.2022 Thank God the rugby league season is back. The Indigenous All Stars vs Maori All Stars game played at Cbus Stadium on the Gold Coast was a great way to commence the 2020 season and Johnathan Thurston hit the nail on the head when he mentioned that the NRL have found the right mix with these two proud teams. The Internationals played at the end of 2019 clearly showed, with the once-feared top-tier rugby league nations of Australia, Great Britain and New Zealand getting beaten ...by once called minnows like Tonga and Papua New Guinea, that International Rugby League is where the best of the best want to be and the crowds loved it. 2020 is going to be a huge year for League Queensland. We have expanded from eight issues to nine and from 52 pages to 60 while our big job is writing a ‘History of Rugby League in Queensland’. This ‘History of Rugby League in Queensland’ will cover your club, your district and your era. Jump onboard ‘League Queensland’ in 2020 as we take you for a trip down ‘Memory Lane’. Cheers Tony Price Editor League Queensland

12.01.2022 The NRL trial game in Mackay on 2nd March between NQ Cowboys and Melbourne Storm will be a great way to kick off the season. Rugby League has been the premier winter sport in Mackay for 100 Years in 2019 and during the season League Queensland is going to highlight the great deeds and great players that the Mackay area has produced. We start this feature in our first edition for the season and over the next eight editions we will bring to life the magic moments of the Mackay Rugby League.

12.01.2022 I have broken my promise of never writing negative rugby league but the ridiculous decision from the NRL, which clearly means New South Wales and not National Rugby League to keep the next two Grand Finals in Sydney, is simply too stupid to ignore. The day that Peter Beattie was announced as the Chair of the Australian Rugby League Commission I shook in my boots as I knew then that the Blues had another ally in their corner. When is the rugby league community going to stand u...p and elect one of their own! This guy knew as much about rugby league as I knew about ice-hockey, probably less. There are two states in Australia that play rugby league, Queensland and New South Wales, but only one state is allowed to hold the Grand Final, why? 2046 is the next time a Grand Final could possibly be played outside of ‘Cockroach Country’, we can only hope and pray the game is still alive then. We not only bow to the Blues over the Grand Finals, we allow them to take ‘Origin’ games to Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide in the spirit of growing the game, when we know that the big growth in playing numbers come from the Polynesian based communities in the eastern states. Sadly, the fact that basically all the New South Wales NRL clubs rely on hand-outs from the governing body was always going to be the decision breaker in the Grand Final location. It had nothing to do with honour, loyalty or common sense, simply a cash cow decision that put a few million into the coffers so the struggling Sydney-based clubs could put their hands out further. The battle is over, the Sydney boys will be thanking Todd Greenberg for a job well done while back here in Queensland we strive to keep the game alive. This is our last issue for 2019 so if you enjoy League Queensland support our sponsors as we are the only FREE rugby league magazine in Australia. We’ll see you in 2020 with a bigger, brighter League Queensland. Tony Price (Editor)

11.01.2022 The Newcastle Knights finished the 2020 season in 7th spot on the NRL ladder but in 2021 the people with the betting sheets have them paying $21 in 9th spot. Adam O’Brien (coach) has let a heap of good players go including Aiden Guerra, Tim Glasby and Andrew McCullough but has picked up the very talented and aggressive, Tyson Frizell from the Dragons. The Knights have one of the superstars of the game in Kalyn Ponga but they need more consistency from their spine to be genuin...e contenders. Mitchell Pearce is another year older and will probably not be captain in 2021 while Kurt Mann is a great utility player but not a front-line five-eighth. Blake Green is a key to the Knights’ success in 2021 but I feel they lack the punch to be Top-8 contenders in 2021. Conclusion I feel that the Knights will be competitive but slid down the ladder to 12th position with League Queensland giving them 255 points. #priceysperspective #leaguequeensland IMAGE: NRL Imagery

11.01.2022 One Round. One Ground. 16 teams. If you love Rugby League be in Brisbane between 9-12 May for the first ever NRL - National Rugby League Magic Round. It will be a huge weekend with the TAB Doomben 10,000 Day on Sat 12 May and eight epic NRL clashes at Suncorp Stadium. Issue #20 of League Queensland profiles each game. For accommodation look no further than The Capitol Apartments in South Brisbane and there's no better place for a steak and a cold drink before or after the game than The Breakfast Creek Hotel. 10.01.2022 The Sydney Roosters won the 2018 and 2019 premierships but a late run of injuries to key players like Boyd Cordner, Sam Verrills, Jake Friend and Victor Radley scuppered their 2020 season. They finished 4th on the premiership ladder but were not the same team without Cooper Cronk. The 2021 Roosters will be relying on the inexperienced Lachlan Lam to guide the team around the park while Luke Keary found out what playing without Cooper Cronk was like. The Roosters’ money-men th...is year will be Boyd Cordner and the halves pairing of Lam and Keary. They have strike power all over the park but need Lam and Keary to steer them in the right direction. Their decision to let Kyle Flanagan (half-back) go could prove costly later in the season. Conclusion - The bookmakers have the Roosters equal second with South Sydney at $6.00 for the premiership while League Queensland gives them 267 points which puts them into 4th position leading into the finals. IMAGE: NRL Imagery

10.01.2022 The Penrith Panthers finished the regular season with a dominant 16-game winning streak and their 18 wins and a draw from 20 games was heady stuff indeed. They finished with the best points differential in the league (+299) and their defence was outstanding. They conceded less than 12 points a game. The 2021 Panthers have lost James Tamou (Tigers), Josh Mansour (Rabbits), Jack Hetherington (Dogs), Caleb Aekins (Raiders) and Zane Tetevano (Leeds). They have picked up Robert Je...nnings and Matt Eisenhuth (Wests Tigers), Jaeman Salmon (Eels) and Scott Sorensen (Sharks). The Panthers play heavyweights Melbourne, South Sydney, Parramatta and Roosters twice and could have as many as six players out due to Origin commitments in 2021 and while their 1st XIII is strong, they will struggle with bench players. It’s vital that Nathan Cleary, Villame Kikau and Jarome Luai are there all season. The Panthers were extremely lucky with injuries in 2020 as depth will be their Achilles heel this season. Conclusion The Panthers are rated as premiership favourites ($5.00) by the bookmakers but League Queensland gives them a rating of 260 points heading into 2021 which puts them in 6th position in our standings. IMAGE: NRL Imagery #priceysperspective #leaguequeensland

10.01.2022 The battling Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs deserved a better result than their 15th finish in 2020 yet the bookmakers have basically consigned them to wooden-spoon contention for 2021. I disagree. They finished the 2020 season with three victories but played with a team wrecked by salary cap indiscretions in the past. Only one team, the Brisbane Broncos had a worse attacking record while four teams were worse defensively. The Dogs have signed former Australian five-eighth Tre...nt Barrett as coach and have also added some strike-power in their backline with Queensland Origin player Corey Allen, former Australian player Nick Cotric and the Roosters’ half-back, Kyle Flanagan. While they will miss the experience and guile of Kieran Foran, these guys will be around for years. The only downside to a competitive Bulldogs is the 4-game absence through suspension of their English International, Luke Thompson. This puts a lot of pressure on the always reliable Josh Jackson, Dylan Napa, Jack Hetherington and Raymond Faitala-Mariner. Conclusion There will be a lot of pressure on Kyle Flanagan, Jake Averillo and the under rated Lachlan Lewis in the halves but with 248LQ points I feel the Bulldogs will climb off the canvas into 13th spot in front of the Dragons, Sharks and Tigers. #priceysperspective #leaguequeensland

09.01.2022 It was fantastic to join Mayor Greg Williamson to present copies of 'More Than Just A Game' to Mackay secondary schools last week as part of our Books into Schools program.

08.01.2022 It was great speaking to Ian Healy and Pat Welsh this morning on Sports Entertainment Network (1053AM Brisbane) about my new book ‘More Than Just A Game - A History of Queensland Rugby League’. The book is available for purchase online now via link below and will be on the shelves at QBD bookstores soon. Cheers, Tony

08.01.2022 Time has flown in 2020 and I have just published my latest and best book, "More than Just a Game - A History of Rugby League in Queensland". The book is 380 pages with more than 500 photos and covers more than 110 years of history in this great state. This book is different in that we have combined the NRL and Queensland Rugby League along with the many International teams that have visited our shores. Don't be surprised to find a relative hidden in the pages. It's at the printer now and will hit the shelves in November. You can pre-order now. https://leaguequeensland.com.au/prod/more-than-just-a-game/

06.01.2022 [Down Memory Lane] Back in December I received a request for some information John ‘Bluey’ Higginson. You can read about his remarkable rugby league life in the latest issue of League Queensland (LQ) magazine. He played in the golden era of regional rugby league in Qld when many Internationals and Qld players plied their trade in places like Barcaldine, Babinda and Bowen. There was work everywhere and a good player could make more money in Babinda than Brisbane. Bluey was a g...reat player in his own right and I’ve included his long list of his impressive statistics in my LQ story. For those who knew Bluey Higginson it would come as no surprise that he had an honour roll of achievements and he passed on his knowledge to hundreds if not thousands of young rugby league players in the Whitsunday area. Bluey Higginson was a great rugby league player, a great coach and a great story teller but more to the point a great character and rugby league needs people like him to keep the game in perspective. Rest in Peace, Bluey, it was great to know you. - Tony Price

06.01.2022 It’s finals time again and the three Queensland based NRL teams are struggling. Why? The experts have all had their say and the common denominator is to blame the coach, players or administration. I have said for as long as I’ve been interested in rugby... league that the development of the game is like a pyramid. You must have a wide base to get a high quality product and here lies the problem. Queensland can no longer rely on these once-in-ageneration players coming along in a bulk-buy like Inglis, Thurston, Cronk, Slater, Smith etc. We have to broaden the base and make every step a winner. In this magazine we write about the Confraternity Shield with 48 teams from all over Queensland playing for a week in Bundaberg. In late July the Brisbane Independent Secondary Schools like Iona (Wynnum), St Patricks (Shorncliffe), St Laurence’s (South Brisbane), Padua (Kedron) and St Edmund’s (Ipswich) played rugby league as a school competition for the first time. The Australian Rugby League Commission, NRL and QRL should encourage and support these competitions because the biggest enemy to the growth of rugby league in this state is the economy, the life-style and the attitude. Parents cannot afford to pay the huge fees for out-of-school sport so playing inter-school sport must be an attraction. It’s supervised and young adults are playing sport not computer games. You can sugar-coat it anyway you want but the growth of rugby league reminds me of tennis in Australia. Back in the 1960s every town and suburb had a tennis court and we produced Lew Hoad, Ken Rosewell, Rod Laver, John Newcombe, Tony Roache, Margaret Court and Evonne Goolagong. The rural towns are dying and suburban tennis courts are disappearing so our few quality tennis players are dwindling in numbers, to be almost extinct. The administrators who run Rugby League should take a lesson from this and forget about quality and concentrate on quantity. Increase the numbers and the quality will appear. Not rocket science. In closing, as normal, please support our sponsors who make this the only FREE rugby league magazine in Australia. See more

05.01.2022 What are your thoughts on a 4th NRL team in Queensland? We look into this battle in our current issue of League Queensland magazine. The thought has sparked a lot of interest and my comment to the powerbrokers in the NRL is to listen to the fans and common sense. A ‘Bird in the Hand’ is a good solid saying so strong juniors, resolute fans, a good business plan, strong cash balance and a leadership group that loves the game should be the bare essentials to be considered. Mayb...e we should look back at the last time clubs were admitted to the NRL competition. It was 1995 and one club was on the agenda but when the smoke had settled the powerbrokers admitted the North Queensland Cowboys and the South Queensland Crushers! Maybe history might repeat itself and we end up with an 18-team competition and five Queensland NRL teams, why not! The only opposition to this would be the Sydney based clubs who cannot get a crowd for love or money. Why hold expansion back because of them. #priceysperspective #leaguequeensland See more

04.01.2022 Away from the big league there are a few clubs and districts celebrating their 100 years in the game in 2019 including Townsville Brothers, Mackay Magpies, Toowoomba Valleys, Toowoomba Brothers and the Toowoomba Rugby League. All three areas have contributed a bountiful harvest of champions to rugby league in Queensland down through the decades, and we’d like to acknowledge their success in the pages of ‘League Queensland’.

03.01.2022 Read about one of good guys of North Queensland Rugby League in our last edition of LQ - Tommy Tassell, who was as tough and skilful as they come and played in the hardest competition in Australia from 1965 into the 1970s. In 1969 the mighty men from Mount Isa with half the town in tow travelled east to Townsville to play in the Foley Shield Grand Final and to quote former Brisbane Broncos CEO and Mount Isa team mate, Bruno Cullen, ‘Tommy had a great game’. Mount Isa played T...ownsville in the final with the coastal team winning the scrums 26-12 and dominating possession but the Mount Isa forwards with Tassell leading the way controlled the rucks and sent the Foley Shield back to Mount Isa for the first time with a 12-9 victory. Tommy scored the opening try and every Mount Isa player in the run-on XIII played the full 80 minutes. In 1976 Tommy and his wife Sandy left Mount Isa and moved to Cairns where his love affair with rugby league continued. Tom gave almost 40 years’ service to both junior and senior rugby league for Kangaroos, Cairns, and North Queensland as either coach, administrator, selector, or advisor at all levels, and served most recently as a Director with the Jones Park Board of Management. Tom was a life member of Cairns Kangaroos and Cairns District Rugby League, while Sandy is the first female Life Member of Kangaroos Junior Rugby League Club - Cairns. Sadly, Tommy Tassell died in Brisbane on the 4th April. Tommy is survived by his wife Sandy and 3 boys who all were born in Mt Isa and played in the NRL - National Rugby League Brad, Kris and Jason Tassell.

03.01.2022 With the Titans in turmoil following the sacking of coach Garth Brennan, Holbrook is tasked with rebuilding the Gold Coast Titans. The task is Titanic. Many believe it is simply not possible to succeed on a glitter strip littered with sporting carcasses. Holbrook begs to differ. When James Roberts quit the Brisbane Broncos this year to reunite with Wayne Bennett at South Sydney, Kotoni Staggs' eyes lit up at the thought of stepping up as a strike centre. "Jimmy Roberts w...as a real mentor for me," he says. "We are both indigenous guys and I learnt a lot from Jimmy while he was here. A ragtag Broncos Legends outfit has turned it on Papua New Guinea facing off against an entertaining PNG Kumuls Legends side. The game played late in August was part of a good will tour by the Broncos Legends while the Broncos Women’s team played a PNG invitation team. The ghosts of thousands of North Queensland Toyota Cowboys faithful smiled as more than 15,000 fans packed into 1300Smiles Stadium on a balmy spring night in Townsville for the last time on 29th August, 2019. Neither the Cowboys nor their opposition, the Bulldogs had any chance of making the semi-finals, but they put on a show that most teams in the top-eight would have been proud of. Mighty Brothers Rugby League Townsville 2019 TDRL A Grade Premiers. The A Grade was all one-way traffic as Brothers with their five-eighth, Ty Carruci picking up the Player of the Game award scored seven tries in a well-deserved 42-10 victory.
