23.01.2022 Once again we find ourselves trying to process the horror of a terrible event in Melbourne. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of yesterday's Flinders St incident - and with the ICU teams who, as always, will be fighting to save lives. And we thank our donors who so generously support our research which helps the ICU teams in their amazing work. www.givenow.com.au/intensivecareappeal/

23.01.2022 More praise of the wonderful achievements of Prof Rinaldo Bellomo AO, this time published in the recent edition of the ANZICS newsletter. The Foundation is proud to add that our Grants have helped to fund some of Prof Bellomo's past projects! 'Within ANZICS, one of Professor Bellomos most notable contributions has been as the founding chair of the ANZICS Clinical Trials Group (CTG). The CTG has gone on to become one of the worlds largest and most successful critical care r...esearch networks, incorporating 70 Adult and Paediatric Intensive Care Units and more than 650 clinicians and researchers. As a founder and leader of the CTG, Professor Bellomo has dedicated an extraordinary amount of his own time and energy to create a research program that has saved thousands of lives through improvements in patient care and made Australian research some of the most highly regarded at a global level. The impact of Professor Bellomo is such that he has created entirely new systems of practice that influence critical care delivery in all parts of the world and improve the health of millions of critically ill patients. Rinaldos contributions to advancing acute care medicine have impacted on the lives of people around the world. Through his leadership, research, publications and clinical care, he has made healthcare more effective, much safer and more patient focussed. As a role model, mentor and teacher, he has been instrumental in the professional development of countless critical care clinicians both here in Australia and overseas.' 23.01.2022 We are immensely grateful once again to Sharon Knapp whose tireless efforts have raised more valuable funds for the Foundation. Sharon organised this week's series of 'Positive Ageing' morning teas for the City of Armadale in Perth. They were a huge success - four events in four days! Our thanks, too, to Sharon's wonderful student helpers from Roleystone Community College, Armadale Senior High and Cecil Andrews College. A fabulous effort all round!

22.01.2022 You may have noticed that we just changed the header to this Facebook page (at last!)... INTENSIVE CARE FOUNDATION....WE SAVE LIVES is a beautiful triptych painted by WA indigenous artist, Deborah Newenham-Coertse. It tells the journey (through the artist's eyes) of a patient in an ICU. The painting was generously donated to the Foundation by Deborah and later purchased by engineering giant, Aurecon, to grace their Brisbane offices. Once again, we thank Deborah and Aurecon for the important funds raised by the sale of this beautiful painting!

22.01.2022 Only a couple of weeks to go before Perth's HBF Run-for-a-reason on Sunday, 27 May. Please support Sharon and the Intensive Crew who are once again taking part to raise important research funding for the Foundation. https://hbfrun2018.everydayhero.com/au/intensive-crew

22.01.2022 With the support of international healthcare supplier B.Braun and Perths Original Basket Boutique, the Foundations WA Ambassador, Sharon Knapp, has produced a care pack to comfort children visiting the ICU at Rockingham Hospital. The packs contain a cuddly wheat-filled sheep and a remarkable little comic book Understanding the Intensive Care Unit Written by Doctors for Kids. In this book the young reader is introduced to a group of comic character superheroes, The Me...dikidz, who live on Mediland, a planet shaped like the human body. Their mission is to teach kids how illness affects the body and to explain in simple language what all the activity and equipment in ICU is all about. Rockingham staff report that the packs have been well received by youngsters visiting family members in ICU. We send congratulations and thanks to all involved in getting this terrific initiative off the ground. See more

12.01.2022 The Foundation and Osler Technology are excited to announce a partnership which allows all new subscribers to access Oslers Clinical Portfolio at a substantial discount, while also seeing Osler donate $60 per subscription to the Foundation. Were delighted to be able to partner with the Foundation. The chance to give something back to the ICU community is really important to us, particularly as Osler has its origins in the critical care environment, says Osler co-founder ...and Intensivist, Dr Todd Fraser Osler enables users to capture data related to their education, training, continuing professional development, patients and procedural activity, and will soon launch patient and peer feedback portals and a personal performance development planner. The Intensive Care Foundation is happy to partner with Osler Technology given its strong mantra to increasing training quality standards within the Intensive Care environment, says Foundation Executive Director David Brennan. Oslerhave agreed to generously donate to the Foundation for every subscription they receive, which we hope you may consider. We look forward to growing our partnership with such a dedicated, community-minded organisation. See more

10.01.2022 The Foundation sends a big vote of thanks to Kathleen Brennan and the team at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital in NSW who today celebrated Intensive Care Day, raising awareness and valuable funds for the Foundation. A fabulous effort from a great team!

09.01.2022 At the Foundation we are clear that ICU diaries can be very helpful for some patients but are not necessarily for everyone. Research into the effectiveness of ICU diaries continues. Here are findings from a recent study of diaries in the paediatric ICU where knowledge of the impact of ICU diaries is very limited. Mikkelsen (2017) from Denmark conducted a qualitative interview study with children and their families 4-6 months after the ICU stay, to explore the meaning of an I...CU diary to them. Included were children with an expected stay > 72h and who had an ICU diary. In result, interviews of 5 children, aged 5-14, and their families, could be analysed, using a thematic analysis. Three main themes were identified: a) diaries have a value for the entire family: to remember a whole story for parents, to get a different view by reading nurses entries, and to understand what happened for children; b) diaries are creating memories, because also children had unreal memories, and the diary helped them to understand their development; c) importance of pictures, personal pictures were valued, and also pictures of the staff were appreciated. The author concludes: Diaries play an important role in making the PICU experience meaningful by providing explanations and coherence. The findings suggest that a diary can serve as a tool/catalyst for the coping process of the family unit. We hope more studies about ICU diaries in the paediatric setting will be published!

05.01.2022 We were delighted to see well-deserved recognition of the outstanding work of Prof. Rinaldo BELLOMO, in yesterday's Queen's Birthday Honours. Prof Bellomo was made an Officer in the General Division (AO) 'for distinguished service to intensive care medicine as a biomedical scientist and researcher, through infrastructure and systems development to manage the critically ill, and as an author.' Congratulations from all at the Foundation!

04.01.2022 Hope 2018 is off to a great start for everyone! Sepsis, a serious complication that occurs when the bodys response to infection results in tissue damage and organ failure, is a common reason for patients to be admitted to ICU. For sepsis survivors, recovery can be slow and difficult. We thought this visual representation of symptoms that recovering patients might encounter was very helpful - it's from a 'Jama' article by Hallie C Prescott MD, MSc and Derek C Angus MD, MPH.

04.01.2022 HBF Run for a Reason is on again and Perth-based Team Intensive Crew are once again registered & raising valuable funds for the Foundation. Our wonderful WA Ambassador is heading up the team once again. She explains why: "There are so many wonderful charities out there these days, so why support our cause? Well, we will give you some amazing reasons. Cancer, strokes, pneumonia, asthma, organ transplant & motor vehicle accidents are just a few. Any of these can cause you to f...ind yourself or a loved one in an ICU. The Foundation funds the vital research to assist these patients have the best chance of survival. 03.01.2022 Dr Bronwen Connolly (pictured here) of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in UK and King's College London is Chief Investigator of a research project, PRACTICE (Physical Rehabilitation Core Outcomes in Critical Illness). She is seeking former ICU patients and caregivers with previous experience of a critical illness, to take part in a study titled: DEVELOPMENT OF A CORE OUTCOME SET FOR TRIALS OF PHYSICAL REHABILITATION AFTER CRITICAL ILLNESS. She wants to understand pa...tient and caregiver opinions on what outcomes are important to assess in physical rehabilitation after critical illness. In this study participants would complete a maximum of six surveys, each lasting approximately 30 mins, completed online and each scheduled approximately one month apart. If you are interested in participating, please do contact Bronwen for further info: [email protected] See more
