Sadly, too many girls across the Asia Pacific region still have limited access to specialist reconstructive surgery and allied health services. Interplast remains passionate about ensuring every girl has access to the medical care they require. We won't rest until every girl and wo...man has access to life-changing surgery. #girls #internationaldayofgirl #surgery #development
21.01.2022 We’re lucky to have many wonderful supporters, that enable us to deliver life-changing projects across the Asia Pacific region. OPC Health, based here in Melbourne, are a supplier of rehabilitation clinical supplies, and Interplast regularly uses their products during our programs. OPC often generously also donate extras, which help tremendously. Just last week, they added over $500 of extra supplies to be sent to partners in PNG, to assist with the rehabilitation of burns p...atients there. And OPC staff member Debbie (pictured), even hand-delivered it to one of our team! Another great example of how people contribute in different ways!

19.01.2022 Did you know Interplast has an ongoing speech pathology program running in Fiji? While cleft lip & palates are regularly operated on by local Plastic & Reconstructive surgeon, Dr Semesa Matanaicake, there is currently no speech therapy department in Fiji, and since 2014, Interplast allied health volunteers have been working together with local health professionals and educators to fill this gap. Children being operated on are very young intervention at such a young age i...s integral to better health outcomes because without surgery, babies cannot feed properly and may become malnourished, and children may face speech and communication difficulties as they become older. Local physiotherapists trained by Interplast speech pathologists have taken on this important role. With no specialised training in Speech Pathology available in Fiji, Interplast’s emphasis has been on training physiotherapy and nursing staff at Colonial War Memorial Hospital. We have also worked with Fiji National University to incorporate training on cleft care in the physiotherapy curriculum for final year students.
13.01.2022 Recognising the significant impact of burns injury in Fiji, and the need to continually improve local capacity to treat burns, Interplast is pleased to be able to continue to support our Fijian partners to deliver training to local medical personnel, even when we aren’t able to be there in-person. This week our colleagues at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva are hosting a Burns Nursing Seminar, which Interplast is pleased to be able to support, as part of our Austra...lian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade ANCP activities. Interplast Nurse Educator Jan Rice will present, remotely, on wound management for burns. This seminar includes nurses from across the Fiji Islands. Supporting our local partners to deliver training and professional development initiatives like this demonstrates huge progress towards sustainability of specialised clinical care in Fiji, and we couldn’t be prouder to play a small role in this. Nurse education activity delivered in Suva in 2019
10.01.2022 Happy Fiji Day! We wish all our local partners in Fiji all the very best on this special day. Interplast started working in Fiji in 1983 and since then it has become one of Interplast's largest program. In recent years, Interplast has been working closely with local surgeon, Dr Semesa Matanaicake, supporting his training to become a plastic surgeon like his late father. This has included a two-year training placement in Hobart and since returning to Fiji to re-establish th...e plastic and burns unit in Suva, Interplast has provided with mentoring support to Semesa and his junior peers. Interplast has also delivered many training programs in Fiji, including those focusing on surgical skills, anaesthetics, nurse education, burns management and allied health training. Recently, we were proud of the Burns Awareness Campaign run by Dr Semesa and his team which culminated in the establishment of Fiji's first burns symposium in August.

This webinar will be hosted by Praxhub on Monday 12 October at 3pm (Melbourne time, AEDT).... Register at https://zcu.io/bygt

08.01.2022 Today is International Allied Health Professional’s Day. We wish to recognise the tremendous contribution of Allied Health Professionals to patient care and population health. This is also a chance to get to know and celebrate their skills & achievements and in the coming days we will showcase some of the amazing work Allied Health Professionals have contributed to Interplast programs across the Asia-Pacific region. Thank you to all our volunteer & local partner physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists & podiatrists for your hard work!
08.01.2022 Hand therapy & burns rehabilitation are at the heart of most Interplast Allied Health programs and complement our surgical & training programs. Hand Therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper limb - shoulder to hand. It involves evaluation and testing to assess the injured limb from which a specific treatment program can be designed. A variety of specialised treatment techniques are used to achieve these goals. Following a burn, a patient may need rehabili...tation to help them recover and maximise their ability to participate in activities at home, school/work and the community. Scar management is an integral part of burns rehabilitation, with the aim being to have a scar that is as flat, supple and as soft as possible. These therapies are delivered by qualified Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists. They are essential to the rehabilitation of patients who suffer from conditions resulting from injury, disease or deformity.
08.01.2022 Our friends at Rotary Club of Kurrajong North Richmond Inc (NSW) will be holding a Teddy Bear’s Picnic on Sunday 8 November to raise funds for Interplast. Spots are limited due to COVID restrictions, so if you would like to attend please RSVP to Robyn via email [email protected]
06.01.2022 Today is Global Handwashing Day and never has the importance of good hand hygiene been more well understood than in 2020. But, 40% of the world’s population do not have access to a basic handwashing facility, and 61% of healthcare workers are not adhering to best handwashing practices. Hand Hygiene education forms an important part of Interplast’s clinical education programs. This year, while our teams have not been able to travel due to COVID-19 restrictions, we’ve contin...ued to develop education for local partners to promote the importance of hand hygiene. This has included a series of training videos, produced with Praxhub, including a focus on appropriate hand washing preparation in the operating theatre. Clinicians from across the Asia Pacific can register for access to Interplast’s Praxhub training platform, and view all of our online education at https://app.praxhub.com/login Good hand hygiene saves lives! #handhygieneforall #globalhandwashingday
05.01.2022 Are you passionate about gender equality and disability inclusion, and working in one of our partner countries across the Asia Pacific? Interplast is currently seeking expressions of interest for a number of short research consultancies across specific countries, to undertake an analysis of the local context related to gender equality and disability inclusion. These projects are to be undertaken by an individual or organisation located within the relevant country, and will b...e undertaken in early 2021. See our website for details of each project, and how to apply. https://interplast.org.au/get-inv/employment-opportunities/
04.01.2022 Since 2013, Interplast, in partnership with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) and the Bangladesh Society for Study of Pain - BSSP has been delivering Essential Pain Management (EPM) courses in Bangladesh. We recently completed an evaluation of the effectiveness and sustainability of this program, and are pleased to make the findings available. Some key findings are highlighted below. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation of our programs is essentia...l to ensure that we are meeting our objectives and continuing to address locally identified need in a sustainable way. This evaluation was part-funded by Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade ’s ANCP. You can read the full report here: https://zcu.io/12qS
04.01.2022 Today on National Anaesthesia Day, we wish to acknowledge and thank the incredible work and critical roles anaesthetists play every day in ensuring safe surgery and patient care. Anaesthetists are at the heart of most Interplast programs and we thank you for all you do! Pictured below are Interplast Volunteer Anaesthetists Dr Paul Goggin (left), and Dr Scott Fortey & Dr Michael Whitehead (right) during Interplast surgical programs in Tonga and Bhutan, respectively. #nationalanaesthesiaday #nad20 #alwaysready
03.01.2022 Today is World Diabetes Day, and in 2020, the campaign focuses on promoting the role of nurses in the prevention and management of diabetes. While the global nursing workforce is 27.9 million, the global shortage of nurses is 5.9 million, and 89% of that shortage is in low- and middle-income countries. This is something that resonates strongly with Interplast and our local partners across the Pacific Islands, where up to1 in 4 people live with diabetes, with poor managemen...t often leading to amputation of limbs which have profound impacts on people’s lives and livelihoods. Interplast is contributing to this significant issue, through the training and education of nurses across our partner countries more broadly, and through the delivery of specific education related to management of diabetic wounds, and the diabetic foot. Here is Interplast volunteer podiatrist & educator Nikki Frescos, delivering education to local nurses in Fiji in 2019. #WorldDiabetesDay #nursesmakethedifference
02.01.2022 2020 has seen Interplast working collaboratively with local partners to identify opportunities for the medical professionals we support across the Asia Pacific to participate in education and training being delivered remotely including that being delivered in-country by our partners. Recently our colleagues in Sri Lanka delivered their Annual Surgical Congress virtually, and we were pleased to be able to offer support to clinicians from neighbouring countries to join in ...both enhancing their education opportunities and strengthening regional linkages. Dr Sonam Jamtsho from Bhutan (pictured) was one who took up this opportunity, and he reported back to us that the congress was very informative, especially related to cancer, trauma, minimally invasive surgery and recent advances, which I will share with my colleagues so that we can try to incorporate them into our national treatment protocols in Bhutan. For Interplast, being able to support the delivery of the virtual Congress in Sri Lanka is part of our focus to strengthen sustainable health systems, taking the lead in the delivery of their own health education.
01.01.2022 Much of our work has immediate impact but it is nice to see the longer term benefits of partnerships like the one we have with Children First Foundation
