18.01.2022 DHL AUSTRALIA DRIVER TURNS GOOD SAMARITAN BY PUTTING OUT FIRE ON BLACK MOUNTAIN Courier Andrew Reardon who put out a potentially disastrous, fast-running blaze on Black Mountain this week has some very personal experience with the devastating impact of a fire. His grandparents lost their home in the 2003 Canberra bushfires. The fire was actually quite intense. It had kicked off pretty quick and it was quite ferocious. We do fire training at work which helped me become a pro...active with putting out the fire," he said. Andrew's actions, meanwhile, came to public attention when a listener rang in to 666 ABC to praise the efforts of the then unnamed DHL driver.

14.01.2022 ONLINE SHOPPING SURGING Australians are shopping online more than ever and mainly from local retailers, with sales surging more than 11 per cent in the past year, according to new research from Australia Post. Australia Post has released its second annual Inside Australian Online Shopping Report an overview of eCommerce in Australia, identifying who is buying what and where online.... The report, which draws on all of Australia Post and StarTracks customer and delivery data, showed online shopping sales rose 11.5 per cent in 2016 compared with 2015, and domestic retailers accounted for 79 per cent of the total online spending. Australia Posts general manager of e-commerce & international Ben Franzi said Australians love of fashion and department/variety store items continued, with the two categories accounting for more than half of all online sales. Price, range and convenience are the three main reasons why consumers shop online, and why growth rates remain strong, Mr Franzi said. Online shopping empowers people to shop at a time that suits them. Almost one third of all online purchases were made from 7pm-10pm, while 18 per cent were made from 2pm-5pm. Australians are increasingly using their smart phones to shop online, with purchases made from a mobile device growing 52 per cent. Other popular items included personalised goods, which grew 28.2 per cent. Mr Franzi said more online retailers were offering shoppers the ability to co-design and add their own personal brand to products such as watches, handbags and other accessories. Point Cook in Victoria was the No.1 buying location for the second consecutive year, reporting 13.2 per cent growth, followed by Toowoomba in Queensland (7.6 per cent growth) and Liverpool in NSW (15 per cent growth). Together, Australia Post and StarTrack deliver more than four billion items to 11.6 million addresses across the country annually. Mr Franzi said the data provided critical information for businesses looking to get ahead in a tough retail market. Here in Australia retail as we know it wont ever look the same, Mr Franzi said.

06.01.2022 Japan Post books $4.7b writedown on Toll, flags 1700 job cuts at the business Thomas Wilson and Taro Fuse Show comments Japan Post Holdings said on Tuesday it will book its first annual loss in at least a decade, after unveiling a $US3.6 billion ($4.7 billion) writedown on its Australian logistics arm Toll Holdings.... Japan Post estimated its loss at 40 billion yen ($470 million) for the year ended in March, becoming the latest Japanese company to stumble after a high-profile overseas acquisition. Japan Post has shocked the market with a $4.7 billion writedown on its Toll acquisition made two years ago. Photo: Nic Walker Japan Inc has spent heavily on overseas mergers and acquisitions in recent years, often paying hefty premiums to tap growth overseas amid dismal prospects at home. But many bets have failed. Toshiba is expected to report a net loss of around 1 trillion yen due to charges related to the bankruptcy of its Westinghouse nuclear unit, which it acquired in 2006. Japan Post, a conglomerate that spans postal delivery, banking and insurance, had originally forecast 320 billion yen in net profit for the financial year ended in March, down 25 per cent from the previous year. The company, 80 per cent owned by the government, bought Toll in May 2015 for $6.5 billion in a deal designed to boost its global logistics reach and offset a decline in its domestic postal operations. At the time of the Toll deal, Toru Takahashi, then-chief executive of Japan Post, had said there would be no major job cuts at Toll. But Toll has been hit with a drop in parcel volumes as Australia's economy is buffeted by falling commodity prices, leading Japan Post to book the writedown charge. Despite Toll's problems, Nagato said Japan Post was "constantly looking out for other acquisitions, including those beyond the logistics sector." Reuters The price we paid for Toll was high. Japan Post President Masatsugu Nagato

05.01.2022 HOW TO PACK YOUR SHIPMENTS... To protect your shipments from damage, delay and surcharges, please follow these guidelines when packing and labelling your freight for hassle-free shipping. SHIPPING BOXES ... Choose a box in good condition and that is strong enough to hold the contents. Used boxes lose strength the more times they're used, so may not effectively protect your contents. Avoid boxes that are too big for your contents and require excessive padding. They risk getting crushed. Most of our carriers accept boxes up to 70kg (International) and 30kg (Domestic) without a pallet. Please remember to place a 'HEAVY' label on boxes over 20kg. Use proper sealing tape in a 'H' pattern on the top and bottom of boxes. Please consider strapping heavier boxes. Properly label all boxes on top so the barcode is flat and easy to see. Don't forget to remove any old labels. SHIPPING WITH PALLETS Stack the boxes in columns to ensure maximum stacking strength and stability. Packaging should fit squarely on the pallet without any items hanging over the edge. Keep the top level surface flat, compact and stackable. Use strapping and/or stretch wrapping, including the pallet on the strap/wrap, to hold items in place. Place pallet labels clearly on the side and not on top of the pallet. Don't forget to remove any old labels. IRREGULAR ITEMS If you need to send items in mailing tubes, use triangular mailers as they will sit flat on the conveyor belt, and will be processed faster. Check that your goods don't have any items hanging or sticking out that could cause damage to other shipments and that ample padding has been added to your freight. We need your cooperation to transport your shipments safely and securely. Imperfect packaging puts your goods, other shipments and our carriers' team members at risk, and can cause delays for your shipments. Note that shipments containing dangerous goods must be fully compliant with IATA and ADR regulations. For more information on how to best label and package your consignments, please visit contact Gary on 0410 314 567 or [email protected]

04.01.2022 PARCELCOPTER TRIAL A SUCCESS, SAYS DHL DHL has completed a three month test of a Parcelcopter which automatically delivers and collects parcels from a special pack station, dubbed the Parcelcopter Skyport. The trial in the Bavarian community of Reit im Wink is the first time that a parcel service provider has directly integrated a Parcelcopter into its delivery chain.... Were the first worldwide who are able to offer a transport drone Parcelcopter at DHL for end-customer delivery. A total of 130 loading and offloading cycles were ultimately performed. Each round trip from a valley to a plateau at roughly 1,200 metres above sea level covered eight kilometres of flight. DHL Parcel will now analyse data from the trial with its R&D partner. The findings will be used to select other potential areas for testing.

04.01.2022 DHL EXPORT BAROMETER: Export confidence is at its highest level since 2011, with overall positivity in international trade evident in the DHL Export Barometer 2017. The 14th annual research study into Australian exporter confidence found that... two-thirds (67%) of exporters surveyed expect sales to increase over the next 12 months just 2% below the peaks of positivity seen in 2007 and 2010. Furthermore, exporters have reported an uplift in actual orders in the DHL Export Barometer 2017, with 56% of exporters recording an increase in orders over the past 12 months, which is the highest proportion in over six years. There has also been a pick-up in sentiment amongst new exporters, and traditional concerns about regulation, legal and cultural barriers have been subsiding. In fact, for most exporters surveyed, it is getting easier, not harder to do business on the world stage in a regulatory sense. However, Australian exporters have serious concerns about the disruptive trade policies of US President Donald Trump and the administrations withdrawal from the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), alongside the fallout following Brexit and recent changes to 457 Visas. Despite serious fears of the being Trumped by these events, exporters do see some sweet spots in the global economy that hold great export potential, with New Zealand, South East Asia and other Asia Pacific traditional markets holding promise. The trend in online marketing continues. Now almost four in five (78%) exporters generate orders from online channels, with a quarter spending a whopping 60% or more of their marketing budget online. Exporters are also continuing to embrace social media with almost half (48%) of exporters using social media channels to attract export orders. Exporters predominantly use Facebook but also Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and Twitter to reach consumers worldwide, particularly in South East Asia. Online advertising is also strongly utilised by 46% of those surveyed to attract export orders, with Google advertising dominating. 02.01.2022 Australian Manufacturing sinks to last A Heavy Duty padlock on a gate Australia has now slipped below Luxembourg to come in last of OECD nations in terms of manufacturing jobs as a share of total employment.... A report from the new Centre for Future Work has identified policies settings which have contributed to the dramatic and unusual decline in Australian manufacturing, and identified opportunities to reverse the trend. The decline of manufacturing in Australia is not normal, nor is it inevitable, director of the Centre for Future Work Jim Stanford said. What is inevitable, however, is that any developed country which opts out of manufacturing will be opting out of over two-thirds of world merchandise trade. It is equally inevitable that innovation will also suffer, since manufacturing contributes more to innovation than any other sector of Australias economy. Manufacturing is too often depicted as an old or low-skilled industry. But the reality is that high-wage, high-tech countries are investing in and expanding manufacturing. There is abundant international evidence that smart, pro-active government engagement, aimed at deliberately enhancing strategic, high-value, export-oriented manufacturing, is not only possible it is essential for modern industrial success. The report also contains new polling that reveals enormous support for direct government intervention to support manufacturing jobs. Governments are not powerless in this area. There are clear policy options to encourage manufacturing, and there is strong community support for politicians to take them up, Mr Stanford said. The Centre for Future Work is a new initiative, housed within the Australia Institute, to conduct and publish progressive economic research on work, employment, and labour markets.
