12.01.2022 8 Tips for prescribing 3D printed Orthotics for kids. The mayhem of the back to school panic has well and truly kicked in, and it’s normally a time of new shoes and changes in activity following a long period of rest. It’s a time when parents notice the kids have outgrown their orthotics and old symptoms return, especially the pesky Sever's.... It can be tough to prescribe for those flat, planus feet especially when they are quite fleshy and they pronate to end ROM with a medially deviated STJ axis. So here are some tips on prescribing 3D printed orthotics for the little (and not so little) ones. 1. Scan the patient slightly inverted, exposing the STT. This gives you a great head start on applying the right amount of pressure on the medial side of the STJ axis. 2. Increase the MLA height slightly and have the peak correction pushed back proximally. 3. 14+ mm heel cups 4. Curved Medial Grind (CMG) giving greater surface area for the navicular and any excess fleshy tissue to be supported. 5. Medial Heel skive as required. 6. Rearfoot inversion correction of 10 + degrees with extrinsic posting. 7. Intrinsic FFT Varus correction (Increases the medial pitch of the MLA profile) 8. An Arch cookie can often be valuable Prescription guidance and full design preview capabilities is available to all of our clients, as well as tailored online workshops for your entire team.
