25.01.2022 With all this talk in the news about children as young as 10 being put into prison, it's very sad. They may have been able to be helped earlier. Too many children have indiagnosed learning difficulties such as Irlen Syndrome and Dyslexia. According to Whichard, Feller & Kastner (Sept 2000) 80% of inmates participating in prison educationl programs had a high incidence of symptoms of Irlen Syndrome. Children with reading and other learning difficulties need to be properly te...sted for Irlen Syndrome and Dyslexia and then supported adequately. Because "Once the child or adolescent fails in their schooling, it appears there is a downward spiral, due to the inability to access suitable study or employment, toward a steady path of unemployment (Macdonald, 2012). Reading is a basic skill that everyone can learn with the aid of technology.... Those with Meares-Irlen Syndrome, have the added difficulties with headaches from reading or migraines and the floating effect of letters. These failures can affect the way in which people with both conditions can become disruptive and fall into bad company, such as delinquency and criminal activity. Humans have a need to be accepted by a peer group. The inability to access suitable employment, due to their reading and writing abilities, provides the nexus for people to move into the wrong crowd, and to be accepted by similarly disadvantaged people, who have a resentment against society." (Jacqueline Caskey, Peter Freney WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF DYSLEXIA AND MEARES-IRLEN SYNDROME IN ADULT VOCATIONAL STUDENTS? 2019)

22.01.2022 These wonderful story books were written, with the help of their mum, by two book-loving children who have Irlen Syndrome or perceptual dyslexia. One in five people have this processing disorder but most people will go undiagnosed, often becoming frustrated at school because it is difficult to concentrate, read or focus on tasks. The junior authors wear tinted Irlen lenses to help them concentrate and read more easily. These lenses have changed their learning journeys. Free chapters available now.

20.01.2022 We didn't find out what was going on until 8th grade. Her life has forever been changed. She never told us she couldn't see black words on white paper until Tha...nksgiving. Many trips to eye doctors and other professionals until we figured it out and got her tested. She got her glasses 2 days before Christmas just in time for her high school placement exams. She is less anxious now that she understands what she has. No more headaches and a lot of purple paper! See more

19.01.2022 Stay tuned. This week we will be hearing from an amazing young Ballarat boy who has managed to improve so much in his reading skills since being diagnosed and treated for Irlen Syndrome that now he uses his reading skills to raise money for the sick.

17.01.2022 Amazing! What a game changer!

17.01.2022 It was a good day. #irlensyndrome

12.01.2022 MY SON IS STRUGGLING AT SCHOOL BUT I KNOW HE IS REALLY SMART. THERE IS SOMETHING THAT I CAN'T WORK OUT THAT IS HOLDING HIM BACK! This is a common concern expres...sed by many of our parents when they come to the clinic. They have usually been to Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Optometrists, School Counsellors and any other professional EXCEPT a Visual Processing Specialist (an Irlen Diagnostician). When they have tried all other specialists, they are at the point of just willing to try anything, so they eventually find their way to us. These children are usually experiencing visual distortions on the page or suffering discomfort whenever they look at white paper. They don't tell anyone what happens for them when they are reading or writing because they think that everyone sees things as they do, so they don't query it. Visual Processing Disorder cannot be identified by any standardised educational or psychological tests currently available so the ONLY WAY to determine whether the child's learning difficulties are the result of Visual Processing problems is to have them assessed by an Irlen Syndrome professional. If their problem is not identified they often become the victim of ridicule by their peers. This is then the beginnings of decreasing self esteem and confidence. #irlensyndrome #poorselfesteem #lowselfconfidence #hastroublereading #hatesreading #visualprocessingdisorder #headaches #eyestrain for further information go to www.irlendyslexia.com

10.01.2022 Is your child struggling with reading, and it seems that no matter what you do, or what they do, they just don't get any better? Here are sometips that might help: 1.Try turning the lights down or off. See if they read better in dim light. If so, don't force them to read under bright light as that is detrimental to them. The page will look very bright, and in fact, in some cases, it will hurt their eyes. NOTE: They will not necessarily tell you this, because they DO NOT know... that this is not what other people experience. Even you.. they will see you reading OK under the bright light and without any obvious discomfort, so they will just wonder why they feel that way, BUT WILL NOT MENTION IT TO YOU! 2. See if they can read better if the book they are reading from has print over coloured pictures. (This is for the "littlies" who are reading picture books. If they can, then it is a strong indicator that white paper is making it difficult for them. 3. If you have any coloured paper (or can get some coloured paper) that you can print on, photocopy a page out of their book that they are having trouble with onto the coloured paper. Try pink, blue, green, lilac and yellow, and photocopy a different page on each colour, so that you eliminate the concern that they will "remember" the words. (shared from Irlen Newcastle)

03.01.2022 Some children are sadly misdiagnosed as having ADHD when really they have Irlen Syndrome, a condition that can be helped without medication.

02.01.2022 Irlen Syndrome can even cause aching hips and back aches - please read: Last month Madeline was diagnosed with Irlen Syndrome which is a perceptual processing disorder. When she was six she was diagnosed with migranes. Often times they're severe, but most of the days of her life she's had headaches, many days nausea. She's also dyslexic (but she's worked through that and now she's an avid reader and writer--thank you "Gift of Dyslexia" by Ronald Davis). Because of Covi...d, it's taken a long time to see a diagnostician, but the other day Madeline finally got her IRLEN tinted lenses. The changes has been amazing! The first thing she said when she put them on was that her head and her eyes didn't hurt! Then she was walking around and said, "The floor is flat!" That's right--she always saw the floor as slanted! I didn't know that! She didn't know that wasn't normal! Because of that, her hip isn't hurting when she walks because she's not off balance anymore. When she reads a book the words are no longer moving (the words used to go towards the sides of the pages so there would be white rivers down the middle of the page). Her eyes don't hurt when she looks at the computer, phone, or tv. She's finding that she's not as clumsy because her depth perception is corrected. And speaking of depth perception, they told us to not have her drive without her glasses. Good call, as she was having a hard time gauging how close she was to the stop sign (even though she passed her test). She's telling us about all these changes and what she's seeing now as opposed to what she used to see. I had no idea! To her credit, she's done a fantastic job working through these issues all these years. I'm so thankful that we now know what she's been dealing with and it was a rather simple fix! Thank you, Lord! So if you know of anyone that's dealt with these types of problems please tell them about Irlen Syndrome and encourage them to see an actual Irlen screener or diagnostician. This is not an eye problem or reading problem. Eye doctors and reading specialists will not be able to offer adequate help with this disorder. See this website for more info on other symptoms. There are some simple self tests to get a person started, and there's also a demonstration of what a page of words may look like to people with Irlen. (FYI Madeline would see rivers and swirls which she never knew was not normal.) https://irlen.com https://irlenballarat.com.au/

02.01.2022 Many people with Irlen experience visual distortions like words moving on the page, words fading and disappearing as they look at them, straight lines look crooked or wavy, some words have a halo of light behind them, some have shadows around them, and sometimes, the words merge together so that there are no spaces between them. All of these things make it difficult to read or to learn to read. A number of people experience regular headaches and/or migraines that are light-induced. Irlen lenses filter out that part of the light spectrum that is causing the problem for those people. A small number of people with Irlen experience depth perception problems, so that the world looks two dimensional instead of three dimensional, so have trouble judging distances that make it hard to walk up and down stairs without holding on.

02.01.2022 Introducing an awesome, amazing young man, Isaac. Isaac was diagnosed with severe Irlen Syndrome at Irlen Ballarat when he was in grade one. He then went on to get Irlen spectral filters. Since then, he has improved his literacy skills so much that for the last several years, he has been reading to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis in the annual MS Readathon. What an awesome young man and a real trouper! Here is a photo of Isaac and his hand-written personal story, which r...eads: "Hi, my name is Isaac. This year I am doing the MS Readathon for the third time. I was diagnosed with Irlen Syndrome when I was in my second year of preps. I thought I needed glasses like the other kids, but my eyesight was perfect. My mum was told about Irlen Syndrome so she got me tested. I was diagnosed with severe Irlen Syndrome. To help me get better at reading, mum asked if I would do the MS Readathon when I was in grade 1 and I would get to help my friends who have a parent with MS to make happy memories. It was great and I read 100 beginner readers that month. Last year I read 7 junior chapter books and this year I am planning to read 42 books (a mixture of chapter books and traditional fairytales) and hope to raise $300 this year. I'm really excited about MS Readathon and hope other people join in and do it too." Well done Isaac. We are so proud of you!
