24.01.2022 Save the date - First Black Label CPD Seminar of 2016 Dear Members We invite you to save the date for the first of our Black Label Seminar Series for 2016 which... is scheduled for 5.30pm on Wednesday 16 March 2016. This one hour CPD seminar will be delivered by Gail Archer SC who will be speaking on the topic of Persuasion: Silk purses from sows ears. The seminar will be followed by drinks and refreshments. SYNOPSIS The essence of advocacy is persuasion. While some advocates may have more natural aptitude for persuasion than others, all advocates can improve their persuasiveness with thoughtful preparation and execution. This seminar will suggest ways in which an advocate can improve their persuasiveness, and provide some concrete tools to that end. We hope you will be able to join us for what will no doubt be a very interesting and insightful presentation. GAIL ARCHER SC Gail Archer SC is a barrister at Francis Burt Chambers, having been made silk in 2007. She was admitted to practice on 2 February 1990. The majority of her work involves appeals, administrative law, industrial relations (in particular civil penalty proceedings), OSH prosecutions, disciplinary proceedings against professionals (particularly doctors), inquests and general civil litigation. She also acts as a mediator from time to time. Gail has a keen interest in forensic advocacy, and is a regular coach in the Australian Bar Associations Advanced Advocacy Course, a five day residential course conducted annually, usually in Melbourne or Sydney. She has also coached in the Advanced International Advocacy Course held at Keble College Oxford and in the Singapore Law Society Intermediate Advocacy Course held in Singapore. 16.01.2022 When renting business-related property, it is important for both landlords and tenants to understand the relationship they are entering into, and their respective rights and obligations. This relationship is usually governed by a Commercial Lease. Click here to download our free PDF article - Understanding a Commercial Lease.

14.01.2022 Caveats Whether you are purchasing your own property, or helping out the kids pay a deposit on their first home, it is important to lodge a caveat over that property as soon as possible. A caveat ensures that your interest is secured. The word "caveat" generally means "buyer beware". A caveat has two functions once lodged:... i) A caveat serves as a warning to anybody searching the Landgate register of an outstanding interest claimed by another party; and ii) A caveat acts as a statutory injunction. Once a caveat is in place over a property, the owner of that property cannot transfer, sell or grant a mortgage over the property. At Irwin Legal, we can advise as to whether you have a caveatable interest in a property. This rings particularly true in situations where you made financial contributions to the purchase price and/or improvements (such as renovations) to a property. We can also lodge a caveat or commence court proceedings to remove a caveat for you. If you previously lodged a caveat and received a 21-day notice from Landgate, your caveat will automatically lapse unless an urgent application is made to the Supreme Court. So, dont delay - act now!
