20.01.2022 Have you ever experienced the day turn into night in an instant? Robert Klarich did when he captured this rolling dust storm engulfing the town of Mildura in 2...019. 'I've never seen a dust storm cause total darkness like that, the sky was as black as night. And then 10 minutes later it was back to normal again.' For a dust storm to happen, the area the dust comes from must be in low in moisture with sparse vegetation. Strong and gusty winds pick up the soil, raise it high into the atmosphere and transport it long distances - it can travel hundreds of kilometres from its source. Dust storms are most common in central Australia. They become more frequent and widespread in extended drought conditions, like those being experienced in parts of the country at the time.
