25.01.2022 The Furnace lands in cinemas on 10 December, illuminating the forgotten history of Australia’s cameleers who were predominantly Muslim and Sikh men from Afghanistan, India and Persia who traversed the nation’s vast desert interior, forming unique bonds with local Aboriginal people. Watch trailer & see cinema listings nationally: https://bit.ly/3mw0IE6 - In a small number of towns dotted around Australia’s arid interior, reminders of the country’s cameleer past remain. Camele...ers and their charges arrived in the 1800’s for exploration, transport and to assist in the construction of both the Overland Telegraph Line and the interior railway. 24.01.2022 Fun Fact It's no secret that Islamic civilisations were known for their luxurious carpets. King Henry VII owned over 400 of these carpets. Did you know Persian carpets can tell stories? Floral designs represent fertility, teardrop-like motifs represent flames or the universe and stars represent spirituality.

19.01.2022 While still unable to visit a mosque in Melbourne, the holiest site in Islam, The Grand Mosque in Makkah, home to the Kaaba, has reopened for Umrah (lesser pilgrimage) for the first time since its closure in March! Like the rest of the world, the first stage of reopening marks a new 'Covid normal' with a maximum of 6,000 pilgrims visiting per day, a far cry from the average two million per month, pre-covid!

19.01.2022 #MosqueAppreciationFriday This is the beautiful Great Mosque of Kairouan, Tunisia. The city of Kairouan was founded by Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi, who intended for the mosque to be in the city centre. The original mosque was built in 670 CE, making it one of the oldest mosques in the world. Known as a masterpiece of Islamic architecture, the mosque features the first Islamic use of horseshoe arches, sundials on the floors and walls, and rainwater collection points stored be...neath in cisterns. #JummahMubarak

08.01.2022 #MosqueAppreciationFriday We're back this Friday with the pretty in pink Masjid Dimaukom, Maguindanao, Philippines. The Filipino mosque was painted pink to symbolise peace and love amongst the community, in tandem with other municipal buildings in the area. Definitely a sight to see!

06.01.2022 Earlier this week, the Federal Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP announced that the Islamic Museum of Australia will receive $605,000 from the Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) Fund. We are deeply grateful for this important funding, which will underpin a new and exciting project that supports Australian Muslim Artists, fundamentally bridging the gap between Muslim creatives and the wider community.

I may be with a prize winner, or where you would find your next dinner. ... It may seem pretty simple, but I'm only a bit bigger than a dimple.' - Ibn Battuta Find Ibn Battuta: www.islamicmuseum.org.au
