23.01.2022 Education : T4L iPad rollout program. Hi All Just to clarify as a few schools are confused - and not surprisingly either.... The recent communication from the department regarding new iPad purchases and the form you are requested to fill out. The department are simply trying to ensure all schools have her Apple Schools Manager account set up so new iPad purchases can be automatically assigned to it. Apple used to call this DEP but they have dropped that term for some reason and now refer solely to Schools Manager - which is where your iPads should be managed and tied into your MDM solution - Zuludesk for example. The schools who we support, and many others will already be set up correctly in Apple Schools Manager so nothing further you need to do other than fill out the form for those schools who want to buy their next iPads from the department and have not yet set up Apple Schools Manager Zuludesk. Existing and new Zuludesk users are unaffected and there is no issue with continuing to use it. -and it is, of course, recommended as despite there being a push, lead by Apple, to almost force you into jamF Pro, Zuludesk ( or jamF School as its now known ) is specifically built for education and is the world most popular MDM in Education. Filling out the form does not mean you have the use jamF Pro that new iPad purchases now offer. Nothing changes. 22.01.2022 We see a lot of horribly slow PCs. Usually a combination of lots of software you dont need ( security, anti-malware, anti-virus, anti-everything, cleaning software, software that cleans cleaning software, firewall software ) - its amazing the amount of rubbish that accumulates. This week was no different. A PC that was practically unusable. As usual, we found a heap of rubbish on this computer. After deleting pretty much everything and all associated files sprayed througho...ut the computer, it was revived. Virus protection from AVG added and Windows defender doing the rest, this Dell desktop was as good as new. But that wasnt good enough. How about we increase its performance across the board by 500-1000%. Good idea. In went a Samsung EVO SSD. For under $300, this customer had a home visit, all issues diagnosed and resolved, AND a super-fast SSD installed with all data transferred back same-day. Not bad. 16.01.2022 Insane 2011 iMac SSD Upgrade - An unconventional fix! As you know, were a great fan of saving our customers money. So heres another incredible story - and it has 2 great parts to it. One very unconventional - the other, the speed part. Two days ago a customer contacted us with a dead / intermittent 2011 27" iMac. It had been very slow with continual freezing until it became so frustrating, the iMac was put into semi-permanent retirement. Until the owner heard about us an...d emailed via the website at islandit.com.au - So, knowing what the issue likely was, we got it onto the bench same day and identified the major issue. Graphics Card. This is common in these models and ordinarily, there is no fix other than replacing the card which is very expensive when labour and testing is included and very hard to do for anyone other than an expert technician in this particular repair. Weve used the GFX Bake process on probably 500 of these Macs. It takes us about an hour all up. We remove the card, clean the inside of the Mac thoroughly including all fans and vents, disassemble everything and finally remove the graphics card. We then use an SMD heat gun at 400 degrees to blow super-heated air across all the solder work on the graphics card. This has the effect of reflowing any dry joints - which is the reason for these iMacs failing. Re-apply silicon compound to all the necessary bits and re-assemble. Start up the Mac - wonderful. Working again - but slow. So, we contacted out customer and discussed the SSD upgrade - we then performed a 500GB Samsung EVO 860 SSD upgrade as well. Transferred back all of the customers important data, updated and then tested the new speed against the old. - and added a free additional 4GB RAM just because. Were nice like that! Heres the raw facts - the original Apple ( Seagate 7200rpm Mechanical Hard Drive ) v the new Samsung SSD. Boot time to Login Window : 81 secs v 15 secs +540% Login Windows to Desktop : 52 secs v 4 secs +1300% Microsoft Word : 20 secs v 2 secs +1000% Safari : 12 secs v <1 sec >+1200% And all done SAME DAY. These are real word figures. Not made up theoretical figures. And with this increases, why would you buy a new Mac? Another story of heaps of money saved and one very happy customer out of a Mac that would usually be retired permanently. 14.01.2022 * Optus / NBN Scam Warning * If you receive a call from someone such as Mark Nguyen pretending to be from NBNCo who coincidentally calls you just after you've been on the phone to Optus tech support ( who seem to have outsourced all of their tech support overseas ), it is a scam. What they will do is tell you they have identified a reason why your connection is slow and say that they do not want any personal information but ask you to go to a website to check your 'IP Address...'. This website brings up an IP address and in the case of one of our customers' experience, a location of California. The scammer then convinces you that this is why your NBN connection is so slow - it is being shared. This is a fake website that shows you what the scammers want you to see - the scam would then progress from there and money would be acquired at some stage.. probably a screen sharing session where they would claim to 'resolve the issue'. We stopped this one, but are very concerned of the coincidence and also very concerned about the security of Optus' outsourcing. Tip. NEVER speak to unsolicited people / companies. If you really do believe it's NBN, then if they had identified an issue, why would they not simply resolve it. Ask for their number, hang up and call back. Our customer was given a fake Melbourne number - 0390134372 - a fake scammer name, Mark Nguyen and a fake 'operator ID' BT1819023. There are many scams like this. If you believe it's a real call, get their number and call them back. NEVER screen share and ask 'them' to tell you where you live - not the other way around. 13.01.2022 Downgrading a 2019 MacBook Pro to High Sierra 10.13? Cant be done - right? Apparently not. In fact categorically not. Thanks to T2 protection in all new MacBook Pros installing an older OS is no longer possible - despite all the rubbish youll find on the Interweb. T2 equipped Macs will ONLY ever be able to be downgraded to the original OS they shipped with. In some cases, if that Mac was released on the cusp or just after a new OS release, you may be able to go back to the... previous OS if that Mac did ship with it at some stage, but otherwise, save your time and effort. Its just not possible. Still, we like a challenge here at Island I.T. Where theres a will theres a way. And so, we solved the problem for one of our clients yesterday who unfortunately has to use MYOB AccountEdge Pro. Unfortunate, as MYOB is so far behind the times that they have not yet been able to update their software to run on Catalina - which is a problem. Especially for anyone buying a new Mac. Heres our brand new 2019 MacBook Pro 13" Quad Core, originally shipped with Catalina, very happily running OS 10.13 and MYOB 18.5.3. 08.01.2022 Another amazing real-world SSD upgrade. This time, a brand new Dell i7 10th Gen laptop with 16GB RAM. Youd expect it to be lighting fast but for some reason, unless you opt for a factory SSD upgrade option, ( which is far too expensive given current SSD prices ) Dell will kindly put in a Western Digital 1TB Blue. Slow is not the word. The entire machine is visciously compromised. ... Everything is slow. Boot times around 45 seconds, Word takes around 15 seconds to load. So, how do we fix this and unleash the beast this laptop should be? Easy, call Island I.T. Our Private in-home / at-office professional service bring us to you. It had the horrible anti-glare screen peeling issue that was addressed by Apple under their replacement program - which expired a couple of years ago. So, can the issue be resolved using household items?! Yes. The myth is dispelled, we just tried it with our favourite Listerine. Dont use the alcohol free version, use this version. 02.01.2022 Goodbye Zuludesk - Hello jamF School! The latest news in MDM in NSW Gov Schools - and whats happening with licenses. Goodby Zuludesk? Well, not really. Just a rebrand. Heres whats happened. Apple have been in discussions with the Department of Education. Shortly after that began, jamF purchased Zuludesk. Zuludesk is now rebranded as jamF School although it remans a seperate product - for now. jamF Pro licenses ( which are not compatible with jamF School ) are now supplied (... at your cost ) with all new iPad purchases from DET procurement although some schools have reported it appears to be free. On that note, despite T4L newsletters implying that you have to buy your iPads from procurement, you dont - really thats a choice of your School whether to support a local Authorised Apple Reseller ( not that theres many of them left now ) or whether to use your points / credits and order from your procurement portal. So, the question remains - what happens for existing Zuludesk / jamF School clients? Do we have the option of a different license for Zuludesk / jamF School instead? Yes. We do. Its an antiquated process at present that hopefully the department / Apple will fix but nevertheless you do have the option - after the fact. If you are ordering from procurement you are already paying for jamF Pro licenses with your iPad purchases. When you receive your iPads, contact your Zuludesk ( jamF School ) Reseller - such as Island I.T. and well then send a request to Zuludesk who then initiate a procedure with jamF to switch out those licenses for you. Sadly, all dedicated Zuludesk Resellers will now loose out on all license sales due this move between Apple and the DET which is not just anti-competitive, but very frustrating for all professional Zuludesk dealerships who have been supporting their schools since the birth of MDM, but were also required to administer the steps to migrate the licenses on your behalf. The only winners here are Apple and the DET but weve seen this before. So, in terms of our support, nothing actually changes - we still manage and support your Zuludesk as before - we simply do not supply the licenses to accompany your purchases if made from procurement. For existing iPads or iPads purchased outisde of your portal, we can still supply licenses in the usual way. Same day job after an on-site diagnostic, we took the iMac to our workshop, backed up data from a failing hard drive, installed our favourite SSD, restored data, cleaned and returned to our customer a few hours later.
