24.01.2022 Feeling tired and have neck and shoulder pain? You may find this interesting and give reason to straighten up!

23.01.2022 The Intervertebral Disc is a source of common Lower Back and Neck pain. Discs do heal but depend on nutritional supply to repair. Below is a pictures that show how this nutritional exchange occurs and a common habit that has negative effects on this process. This is another reason that movement is so important for the health and repair of these structures. So, a little pain associated with movement with a disc injury can well be better than no movement at all.

23.01.2022 "Sciatica": Pain down the back of one or both legs This condition is common for a number of reasons. There are many causes of pain is this part of the body, some musculoskeletal, and some not muscle or joint pain and have another more serious disease or another process present. Common causes of pain down the back of the legs are;... - Spinal degenerative joint disease - narrowing of the canal (stenosis) - abnormal spinal mechanics (movement) - pelvic mechanical problems and joint pain - gluteal muscle syndromes - slippage of vertebrae due to wear or fracture (spondylolithesis) - pregnancy - simple muscle strain - tumors, fractures and infections - Arthritic processes such as ankylosing spondylitis This is not an exhaustive list. Osteopaths treat and manage patients with sciatic pain with hands on manual therapy when appropriate and when further investigations are required patients are referred off to their GP for further laboratory tests and/or imaging to determine the cause. From the above information the Diagnosis of "sciatica" is not enough. The cause of, or the process that is causing sciatic pain has to be considered and determined as specifically as possible then appropriately treated and managed.

03.01.2022 The "Pinched Nerve" As an Osteopath we see the condition known as Pinched Nerve frequently. This diagnosis or assumption can be alarming to the patient suffering. Symptoms of nerve "compression" take on a whole variety of sensations in the innervated area in the body. These can be: 1. Numbness... 2. Weakness 3. Pain that can be burning, achey, or sharp in nature. 4. Pins and needles There are many sites in the body that as the nerve passes along its course can become irritated and compressed by muscles, tendons, ligaments, intervertebral discs and boney spurrs to name a few. Osteopaths do have a strong knowledge basis on anatomy and neuroanatomy and can therefore often treat neural compressive syndromes or recognise the need for further testing and other mangement strategies for the condition. Here are some relatively common conditions in various regions of the body that we see in practice.
