04.01.2022 This year, I’ve been helping students improve their sightreading. How to do this depends on what you find is the most difficult element of sightreading. If you are having trouble playing the correct sharps and flats in the key signature, for the keys you want to learn to sightread in, try: Memorising the scales of those keys Practice identifying key signatures in sheet music... Learning lots of pieces in those keys Practice improvising in those keys If you find you are stumbling at the first few bars, then: Identify what key the piece is in before you start Work out how to count while you play based on the time signature Tapping the rhythm while counting before you play Singing the melody out loud before you play Singing the melody in your head before you play If you are struggling with playing the notes with lots of ledger lines, try: Working out what the highest and lowest notes of the piece are before you start sightreading it Practice identifying the names of ledger line notes in any music If you are feeling not so confident about sightreading, then: Sightread something easier, then gradually increase the difficulty of what you sightread Practice lots! Remember, learning to sightread is a journey you can always improve!
