02.01.2022 UPDATE AS OF 7/17/19 @2:30 PM I just spoke with Karl, the issue is they have come to an observation that kids have been hurt/step on during the Houston Pre-juni...or mini show, because its not a controlled environment since we share the show ring with other breeds. He stated there has not been any lawsuit pertaining to this, just observation. A 3 yr old can not control the animal in the ring or know if they need to get out of the way if an animal is coming at them, I think we need to work with Houston to adjust the reasoning as to how they came to the 6 year old age as a cut off. We are all for the safety of EVERYONE in the show ring and back at the stalls! They are working on this and will take an ideas/concerns/comments related to this for their decision. We need to work together with them to come up with a solution to keep everyone safe while exhibiting at Houston. original post below: Listen up peeps! HOUSTON LIVESTOCK show is trying to change the age rule for the pre-junior Mini Hereford show! The MBHA rules allow kids to show starting at 3 yrs old! Well Houston wants to change it to 6! Meaning they are cutting out kids 3-5 and excluding them from the Houston Pre-Junior show! They don’t provide any valid concrete proof as to why they are making this change so we need to use this platform of Facebook and make this go viral as to why this change is ridiculous and they indicated change is coming! Be sure to tag #RODEOHOUSTON #HoustonLivestockExhibitors Houston Livestock Show has no problem using our kids under 6 for marketing/PR, and advertise folks to come out to the Rodeo to see these little kids show their minis, but yet they don’t care about the impact it will make on our kids. IF this change happens kids 3-5 won’t be able to show again until they turn 6. Folks that cuts out at least 100 pre junior entries! Mini Herefords are the 2nd largest open cattle bred for HOUSTON! This isn’t just affecting the show, it’s affecting all mini Hereford exhibitors, families and breeders! This wouldn’t be a MBHA show anymore that brings the Houston Livestock Show at least $60k from the Mini Hereford participants! They mention they are worried about the safety of kids 3-5???? Every pre-junior exhibitor has an adult helping them in the ring and last I checked the Longhorns always get loose at Houston! What about the kid getting rammed by his own longhorn while they are showing and then they get loose and disrupt the Mini Hereford show? Guess that doesn’t matter, meanwhile our 3 yr old can hang onto their calf and mange them all around the show ring while the longhorn exhibitor is trampled by his calf?? This is crazy to change this rule! If you have a pre-junior kid that enjoys showing at Houston livestock show please speak up! Call, post, share and do whatever you can to help change this crazy rule so our kids 3-5 can participate! Our kids start early showing because it helps build the foundation of so many life skills at an early age!
