23.01.2022 In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali describes Avidy as the first of the five kleishas (obstacles), that prevent progression on the spiritual path. Avidy is a Sanskrit word that describes veiled awareness or spiritual ignorance, prohibiting a person from connecting to their true self. Avidy is considered the root cause of suffering, the lack of awareness of who we really are. Suggesting that ‘we’ continue to focus on the impermanence aspects of life. Like our thoughts and emoti...ons which are only temporary, yet we often hang onto them. From this we make assumptions and then make judgements. Avidy obscures the higher Self by firmly establishing our life habits and preventing change.

22.01.2022 The lotus flower is associated with the chakras and each chakra is represented by its own unique lotus. These chakra energy centres that are located in the body along the spine passage, also have their own colour, symbol, sound and vibration. By connecting with these energy centres we can become more aware of ourselves and relate them to how we experience our day to day life. IYTA's Katie Brown, will be taking you on a explorative journey through the chakras in her ONLINE Su...mmer Restorative Class with the IYTA at the end of January. Here she will incorporate a variety practices that will focus on each individual chakra from Muladhara through to Saharasra chakra. 14.01.2022 SADHANA: A word we use to describe our spiritual practice. In the ancient Sanskrit text, it translates as methodical discipline to attain desired knowledge or goal. While many of us use this word to describe our daily yoga practice, for some yogis, daily life is a Sadhana. It is a discipline or way of life designed to realise the goal of one’s ultimate ideal or reality.

07.01.2022 Keeping your cool this summer? We love the longer summer days and observing mother nature in her full bloom. Yet, for those who struggle in hot temperatures, summer is not so welcome. The ancient science of Ayurveda says summer is the season when the PITTA dosha is more prevalent. ... So, if during the heat of summer, you find you are more irritable, frustrated and impatience. Physically overheating or experiencing skin irritations. There's good chance your Pitta dosha is a little out of balance. The aim during the summer months is to keep pitta balanced by staying cool, grounding our energy, and incorporating more relaxation into our life. For your yoga asana practice, slow it down. Practise Sheetali or Seetkari pranayama practices to cool the mind. (also great practices for anyone who is menopausal.) If you find yourself experiencing anger or frustration with yourself and loved ones, incorporate loving kindness meditation practices, sending love and positive thoughts to yourself and to those around you. Importantly, establish a summer routine where we eat foods according to the season and remaining hydrated. These few small changes will help to maintain balance during the heat of summer.

06.01.2022 Do you believe in the power of Sankalpa? Studies show that almost 80% of new year’s resolutions fail by February. Yet the Sankalpa has much deeper lasting effects. The Sankalpa is a central component in the practice of Yoga Nidra. Yet, like an affirmation, it can also be implemented into daily life. It is a powerful tool that helps to support inner and outer change, so it is important to develop the right Sankalpa for you and your own individual circumstances. ... In early 2021 we welcome back Alison MacTaggart to host a practical online workshop on how to develop the right Sankalpa and how to extend its positive intention and influence in daily life. Setting your intention and developing your personal sankalpa, is a wonderful creative and intuitive process to participate in. In this workshop you will also explore how to strengthen the shifts that occur as the Sankalpa comes to fruition. For full details about this practical workshop, please follow the link below: https://iyta.com.au//creating-inner-change-with-sankalpa-/

06.01.2022 Here's what 2020 Diploma student Rachel Smith had to say about her experience on the IYTA Diploma of Yoga course: I’ve always wanted to learn more about yoga. I did a lot of research and the IYTA DYT course seemed like a good choice. YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THE DYT COURSE?... I like the gentle and holistic approach and you learn to listen to your body. It’s been intense - I think it has helped doing this course during lockdown it has given me a focus and encouraged me to give myself time to do the meditation and pranayama and practice each week. The residential has been good - it’s been great to meet all the online students and get to know each other a bit more. The course has definitely helped to improve my daily practice and given me a great foundation in yoga and for teaching. 05.01.2022 tell your friends about our online Open Day! - https://mailchi.mp/iyta.com.au/april-enews-5855954

05.01.2022 During our recent residential week, we caught up with some of the current 2020 IYTA students, to ask about their experience on the Diploma of Yoga Teacher Training Course. Here's what Kana Nobuhara had to say. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE IYTA DIPLOMA OF YOGA TEACHING COURSE? Initially I was doing Bikram’s yoga for about ten years - I thought about doing that training, but I didn’t want to be restricted to one style of yoga or study overseas. ... I was about to commit to doing a yoga course and then I fell pregnant, I thought I’d have to put it on the back burner, but I miscarried. As devastating as it was and my husband in February (2020) said: Well why don’t you use this opportunity to do the yoga course. I had started doing pre-natal classes - that introduced me to other forms of yoga which I started to appreciate again That led to me to be more confident and open minded about exploring other forms of yoga and so I searched online. I wanted to find the most established school in Australia and I found the IYTA. I liked that there was no one form of style and it provided a really good grounding holistic view of yoga. At that point I’d missed the first weekend, but it wasn’t a problem as I was sent the recorded lectures, so I caught up. Then I fell pregnant again! WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE DYT COURSE? It’s been my best decision I’ve made in my life. At this point in my life - it’s come together in regards to my dharma. There are so many knowledgeable teachers who are familiar with pre-natal yoga that I wasn’t concerned. Being pregnant on the course has been really nourishing in so many ways - it really has helped me gradually prepare myself for childbirth and being more connected to my mind and body and with the asanas and chanting and mantras and how that all comes together and how I can utilise all those tools to benefit my whole pregnancy journey. I would love to teach! I want to focus on motherhood initially and devote myself to that, but I think yoga is absolutely essential in terms of helping people become more in touch with their bodies I’ve been teaching my friends and it’s encouraging this course is already impacting my group of friends. 05.01.2022 No this is not a funny face competition! Here, IYTA lecturer Alana Smith is beautifully demonstrating Sheetali Pranayama (cooling breath). It’s a wonderful practice that will keep you cool this summer in both body and mind! Here’s how to practise:... 1) Find a comfortable sitting position. With the eyes closed, hands resting on the lap or knees. 2) Extend the tongue as far out of the mouth as is comfortable. 3) Roll both sides of the tongue, like a tube 4) Take a long inhalation through the mouth so the breath draws up the tube. During the inhalation you will experience an instant sensation of coolness in the mouth as you draw the breath inwards. 5) Draw in the tongue and close the mouth, exhaling through the nose. This practice is also a tranquillising pranayama, so it will activate a sense of calmness to body and mind. *Please note, this is contraindicated for anyone with low blood pressure, asthma, or if you have highly sensitive teeth. If you struggle to curl the tongue, you may like to try Sheetkari pranayama, the difference is the lips are separated exposing the teeth, and the breath is drawn in through the teeth making a hissing sound. Like Sheetali, the coolness is drawn in on the inhalation to the back of the throat.

01.01.2022 In Yoga’s sister science Ayurveda, autumn is associated with the Vata Dosha the elements of ether and air, associated with movement, transition and expansion. As essential as these elements are, they can become unbalanced at this time of year when there is a surplus of Vata elements in the atmosphere. Here are 5 Ayurvedic tips to ease you through the Autumn season.... 1. Diet - Our diets should contain foods that are both nourishing and easy to digest. Eat according to the season with an increase of grounding root vegetables, and warming spices. It’s the perfect time of year to introduce soups, stews, dhals and dishes like Kitchari to our diet. 2. Avoid dry, cool raw foods and cold drinks as they can disturb Vata. Opt for herbal teas instead. 3. Regularity - routine is important to keep Vata balanced, so try to establish a daily routine where you go to bed and awake at the same time every day even on weekends! This also includes regularity and routine for mealtimes and exercise. 4. Take extra care of your skin during this season. Like the season Vata is dry. Introducing a grounding self-massage (Abhyanga) is a beautiful gift to give yourself. Here’s a link to more information on this topic. https://chopra.com//the-benefits-of-ayurveda-self-massage- 5. Yoga and Meditation think grounding, warming and calming practices. Enjoy the stillness of a daily meditation.
