22.01.2022 2019 SAPTA Christmas Dinner Friday 13th December 2019 at 7pm- note its coincidental that the Glenelg Tramline is this year 90 years old and last time SAPTA (or AETA SA back then) went to the Jetty Hotel it was the 80th Anniversary of the Tramline. Lastly, I need to know final number by no later than 5th December 2019 and please mention in an e-mail or phone whether you will use the tram to get to and from Glenelg so I know how many I am going to wait for at the Adelaide Railw...ay Station tram stop. Also a tram timetable is attached for you to plan your journey home. Thank you to those who respond and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible for this dinner. Please contact me via PM so I can personally email you the flyer and other information like the Christmas Menu and A LaCarte Menu and tram timetable. 17.01.2022 Some sad news Vale Victor Isaacs It is with great sadness that we said farewell to one of our great fans and advocates today, Victor Isaacs. Victor passed away peacefully at his home earlier this week after a battle with illness. ... Victor was a keen collector of the many timetables and maps that we have produced over the years and was a friend to our owner/director a long time before TransitGraphics came about. Victor provided many insights into the history of transport both locally and overseas. We also had the pleasure to work with Victor on maintaining his traintimes.net.au website. We offer our most sincere condolences to Victors wife Agnes. He will be dearly missed by many. For those who dont know him. He was the book publisher for Transit Australia Publishing he was a great person to talk to and a great inspiration to all. He was one who encouraged the change of name from AETA South Australian division to Sapta. He also helped me understand various public transport issues. RIP Victor and condolences to all his family and friends.

17.01.2022 Drum roll please... From April SAPTA General Meetings for the rest of 2020. All general meetings will be held on Sundays either between 2pm and 4:30pm or 4:30pm to 6pm and we the committee invite everyone to partake in either lunch before the meeting or dinner after the meeting to attend the Original Coopers AleHouse on Pulteney Street which is only 5 minutes walk from the Box Factory Community Centre. So no more struggling to get to a meeting on a Friday night and yes we are hoping this will increase the attendances at our SAPTA meetings plus also increase our membership base.

16.01.2022 Thoughts everyone SA rail lobby group push for return of a Barossa commuter tourist train Michelle O'Rielly Local News A state lobby group's concept of a Barossa commuter tourist train they are campaigning to see return to the region. ... A state lobby group's concept of a Barossa commuter tourist train they are campaigning to see return to the region. Photo: SARRA A rail lobby group has stepped forward this week 'cautiously welcoming' the state government's release of a tender expressing 'best use' alternatives of the dormant Barossa railway corridor. However, the South Australian Regional Rail Alliance (SARRA) warns that the line "must be utilised only for rail-passenger purposes". Their push follows Friday's announcement by Transport Minister Stephan Knoll seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the use of the railway line from Gawler to Angaston. It comes after rail freight company Genesee Wyoming Australia (GWA) indicated they would be prepared to surrender their lengthy lease to 2047, should a suitable 'alternative' use for the line be identified. SARRA convenor Paul Henley told the Herald the Barossa rail corridor is a vital tourism and rail-passenger train link into the heart of South Australia's premier tourist region and must not be given over to other uses. "While the Minister is to be commended at finally looking at options for the corridor, we remind him...his constituents have long and loudly called for a return of rail services to the valley," Mr Henley said. "The alternative hinted at by Mr Knoll - that of selling off sections of the line piece-meal or to turn it into trendy multi-use tracks - cannot be allowed to happen." Mr Knoll said the primary objective for the EOI is to identify the best use of the rail corridor in the long-term interest of the state and local economy. He shared examples of use including extending agricultural areas for farming purposes and shared paths. However, the Minister said that future use of the corridor would influence two projects currently under consideration: upgrade to Kroemer's Crossing with a round about and replacement of Altona Bridge. "If rail capacity is to be retained at these sites, both projects would incur additional costs," he said. But Mr Henley maintains "...under GWA's binding lease agreement with the SA government, the Minister must insist that the line be restored to operational order prior to that hand-back". "That's in the lease, in black-and-white." The EOI closes next month with an outcome to be identified by March 2020.

16.01.2022 So as 2020 commences our President has just sent of another letter to the editor today cross fingers it gets published: Dear Sir, The news that The Overland rail service has been saved for another three months by the Victorian State Government is good news in part even though embarrassing that the South Australian Government could not contribute its fair share.... However, in 2019 the public were promised by the owners/operators of The Overland Journey Beyond Rail that a review would be undertaken and results would be publicly known. This result of the review was not ever released to the general public and no survey was undertaken by the company as to what passengers wanted improved or discontinued in regards to The Overland. Based on our observations the Western Victorian communities of Nhill, Dimboola, Stawell, Horsham, and Ararat are the ones who solely rely on the Overland to take them to either Adelaide or Melbourne. The SA Public Transit Association along with other South Australians remain mystified as to why there is endless publicity about The Ghan and Indian Pacific operated by the same company as the Overland yet there is no publicity for The Overland. Our association and indeed the general public have asked why is this case to which the owners of The Overland refuse to answer that question. If the owners want to keep The Overland operating for more than three months it needs to do an extensive marketing campaign (and this does not just mean lowering fares). It also needs to upgrade The Overland to make the journey more comfortable and pleasant. European and US trains of similar nature of USB Charging ports, TV Screens at the back of seats to watch movies on plus also introducing a timetable that is friendly towards the user and not the operator. For example from 2006 to 2010 Great Southern Rail (the previous operators of The Overland) actually operated AFL Grand Final special train services in which they built up the consists and had fares that were both economical and made sure users could leave on a Friday night and arrive the next morning in time to watch a AFL Grand Final- similar promotions could be done with the Australian Open and other events in Melbourne and Adelaide. Whilst the Overland may have been given a reprieve for the next three months its now up to the general public and its operator (whom we see as being reluctant) to keep it running beyond March 2020. The longest running inter-capital rail service in Australia could go beyond our expectations but maybe another operator maybe willing to take over running this important rail service for both rural South Australians and Victorians. Yours faithfully David Beres President South Australian Public Transit Association 3 January 2020

15.01.2022 Published Indaily today The South Australian Public Transit Association supports Tom Wilson. Our association believes that the more people have to walk to access a bus stop, the more chances of them not catching a bus and using either alternative modes such as taxis, Uber or simply become recluses.... The reality is that many bus routes have been withdrawn with only a Go-Zone available to them, which is between 900 metres to 1.4 kilometres away. Based on SAPTAs own research, the existing W90 will terminate at Marden but east of Marden to Paradise Interchange there will simply be no service available to the general public. he nearest bus stop from Langman Grove Felixstow to Payneham Road is 1.1 kilometres on a road that goes up and downhill. This is not the 800 metres rule that the Minister is spruiking. Langman Grove and nearby Briar Road have many people living in Housing Trust houses and or retirement villages. The transport planners have literally been ill-informed that between Klemzig Station to Paradise Interchange along the O-Bahn there are no stops between these two locations. The reality is also the consultation with these services has been woeful, and for a city this size surely the Minister is aware that not everyone has access to the Internet or knows how to use it, thereby booklets should have been printed according to contract area and letterboxed to all households that were affected. But this was not done, because the Government will claim it has no money to do so. Interestingly this booklet concept in letterboxes started off in South East Queensland (Translink) and flowed onto New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. People have told us about the way their service is being affected, and whilst SAPTA will take a look at the big picture its hard sometimes to fathom that if one bus route gets cut entirely why are people who have no other alternative forced to walk more than 800 metres to their only available public transport service if they are not fit and healthy as they used to be? We hope the Minister is reading emails, articles and also local MPs (who we have heard are taking a lot of complaints, one MP has apparently received 350 complaints about the re-routing of one particular service). Or are we going the same path as when the trams were replaced with buses in the late 1950s in Adelaide, that the government is saying we have made up our mind dont confuse us with the facts? 14.01.2022 This guys blogs are excellent and are very well researched and written https://indaily.com.au//how-to-save-the-overland-for-the-/

13.01.2022 At Sapta we want to express our condolences to the families and friends in yesterdays rail tragedy. We will not make any comment about the cause of this rail accident please do not use this post to assume or make rumours. Thank you Sapta committee

13.01.2022 Some details of the proposed changes have been revealed: We have initially noted the following: Seems to be all services along Galway Avenue to be removed ... Le Fevre Peninsula seems void of any changes as is the outer North and Outer South Contract areas seems to focus on Inner and Middle suburban Adelaide Extensions of Go Zones welcomed Cross Suburban services that are meant to be new according to the Sunday Mail introduction of 30 cross suburban and or feeder connector routes rate no mention or not even under a heading called cross suburban services. Missed out opportunity to extend the suburban connector route 300 to Port Adelaide, Semaphore, Arndale and even dare we say it Mawson Lakes. We will update this page when further information comes in but until then our comments are only what some of our committee members have noted. We also would like your comments as well thank you for your suggestions and constructive criticism and please no swearing in your comments otherwise you will be removed from this page. https://www.adelaidemetro.com.au//Welcome-to-a-new-era-in-

06.01.2022 Our President recently wrote a short Mythbusting Privatisation versus outsourcing opinion piece: As we know many members of the public and indeed public enthusiasts and advocates get quite angry when the word privatisation comes into play and some people still assume what is happening currently with the bus, train and tram tenders is actually privatisation. Since January 1996 (Outer North- Serco) the State Government at the time as is currently was a Liberal Government and wa...Continue reading

05.01.2022 https://www.barossaherald.com.au//barossa-rail-dream-is-/ Sapta will continue to advocate it to become a passenger and tourist line in the medium to long term. To deny over 100,000 passengers per year who catch the bus to Gawler station an alternative plus also a tourists a tourist rail service with coach feeder opportunities to wineries etc somehow is not with The Premier and tourism ministers Stephen Marshalls tourism mantra

04.01.2022 Maybe Adelaide low patronised local services like route 333 and local Golden Grove services could benefit. https://ginninderry.com/aboard-strathnairn-residents-benef/

02.01.2022 Found this online via Google in regards to the Overland funding in 2005: https://www.dpc.sa.gov.au/documents/rendition/B73915

02.01.2022 So this is how Perth does it courtesy of Peter Parker from Melbourne https://melbourneontransit.blogspot.com//timetable-tuesday

02.01.2022 So our association got this letter published today

01.01.2022 Hopefully this letter gets published in The Advertiser: In regards to the Tourism industry in South Australia the South Australian Public Transit Association points out the following: No train operates to the infamous and tourist draw card the Barossa Valley. It can be done but the whim of successive governments has been weak. All it needs is an upgrade of track and Nuriootpa station provide park and ride facilities and modern bus and coach interchange to facilitate feeder ...coaches from wineries etc and buses from the new on demand service. Oh well it looks like it will never happen because the current government is anti rail look at them pulling up the tracks for the Eyre Peninsula rail lines and not funding the little publicised Overland train yet the Victorian State Government embarrassed us and actually funded it last year. We need both tourists and locals yet our regional centres have a poor public transport system because of no increase in regional public transport funding throughout the past twenty years. Not everyone drives a car and many tourists would like to independently travel without having to organise tours etc. South Australia is a great state great attractions that are poorly promoted but it doesnt help that successive governments only care about the bottom line of a budget or the next election we need a twenty year tourism plan and a further 40 years on top of that one like other countries in the world not do plans based on a electoral cycle.
