25.01.2022 It's good to see 9 News Wide Bay back at 5.30pm Monday to Friday after a break due to coronavirus. It's important we have diversity in local media and independent reporting of important stories. Here's one regarding Council's push to develop the Port of Bundaberg.
25.01.2022 It has been a productive week for the Bundaberg Region with visits from State and Federal members of parliament. They came to discuss Councils Advocacy Priorities and learn about potential future projects. If you havent caught the stories on Bundaberg Nows 6pm nightly news, make sure you head over tonight to see the weekly wrap.
25.01.2022 Bourbong Street is re-opening just in time for the afternoon school run. Thank you to the Council staff and Department of Transport and Main Roads (Queensland) for your prompt response.
25.01.2022 The North Bundaberg Story Walk is a storytelling and local history project that's fun for the whole family. Learn more: http://ax.lv/story
25.01.2022 Thank you to the Childers people who gave me a warm welcome at Seniors Week activities on Friday at the Isis Club. Everyone enjoyed the occasion and many returned home with a prize. The morning tea was organised by Councils Childers Neighbourhood Centre staff. Im pictured with birthday girl Colleen Preece, Patricia Fuller, Lesley Behan and Loretta Tarda. All lovely ladies.
24.01.2022 R U OK Day? reminds us to check in regularly with friends, family and workmates to make sure they're okay. Especially during these challenging COVID-19 times, get on the phone if you can't chat with someone in person. Most of us have friends, colleagues and relatives interstate or overseas who we haven't seen for a long time. Let them know you care and that you're thinking of them.
24.01.2022 With our beautiful weather it's a great time to get out and about on our walkways with family and friends. Please stay Covid safe
24.01.2022 It was good to catch up with Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe MP (pictured) today and Tom Smith for Bundaberg to discuss the Premier’s commitment of $42.5 million to start implementing a key element of the 10-year Flood Action Plan. The Bundaberg East Levee is a significant project that’s vitally important to enable investor confidence, reduce insurance costs and keep people safe. There was extensive community consultation, led by the State Government, in formula...ting the 10-year Flood Action Plan. This is one part of a big project and more funding will be needed and more work needs to be done. Engineers have identified the levee as the most effective option to prevent much of the devastation which occurred in 2011 and 2013. I hope the Opposition also commits funding to deliver this important project.
24.01.2022 One of my priorities as Mayor is to reduce youth unemployment in the Bundaberg Region. Council is actively contributing through leadership of the Bundaberg Jobs Commitment and active hiring of trainees and apprentices. We started with 17 trainees and apprentices and thats increased significantly to 63. Im proud that Council has been named a regional finalist in the large employer category of the Queensland Training Awards.... Its good to see that the programs we run and the learning and development training they receive has been recognised.
23.01.2022 Im honoured to have been selected by my colleagues from across Queensland to represent them on the board of the Australian Local Government Association. ALGA is the national voice of local government, representing 537 councils across the country. Ill be pushing for local government to have a louder voice in policy discussions and a fairer share of national taxation revenue.
23.01.2022 Small business is critical to keeping our local economy strong. Today Bundaberg Regional Council met with Small Business Commissioner Maree Adshead and committed to becoming the first Small Business Friendly council in the State. The initiative will deliver an action plan to help the region, better support our local businesses.
22.01.2022 Today I welcomed State Opposition Leader David Crisafulli MP and Shadow Cabinet members to Bundaberg. It’s terrific they’re in the region, speaking to community members, learning about local issues and listening. Council took the opportunity to brief Shadow Ministers on the Bundaberg East flood levee and the extensive community consultation which occurred over several years.... We’re hoping for bipartisan support from all parties and both the State and Federal Governments for this important project to go ahead. It will give thousands of people peace of mind and enable new investment in the region.
21.01.2022 Its good to see 9 News Wide Bay back at 5.30pm Monday to Friday after a break due to coronavirus. Its important we have diversity in local media and independent reporting of important stories. Heres one regarding Councils push to develop the Port of Bundaberg.
21.01.2022 Veterans gathered with friends and relatives at War Nurses Memorial Park today to observe the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific. I was honoured to unveil a plaque to remember 27 nurses from the Bundaberg and Burnett regions, three of whom paid the supreme sacrifice. Full story: http://bundynow.com/3ynm
21.01.2022 Another great walk around Baldwin Swamp Environmental Park. We are fortunate to have so many great walking and biking trails around the Bundaberg Region. If you are looking for somewhere new to take a walk or ride, check out the brochure on 10 popular bicycle/walking tracks here: https://formstmp.bundaberg.qld.gov.au/MD-7-737.pdf
20.01.2022 Ive been really encouraged by the positive community reation to Councils vision to plant one million trees in four years. On Wednesday I visited Gin Gin Landcare and Bush Food Garden with parks portfolio councillor Wayne Honor and they were excited to be involved. Every tree has its own story and well have one million new stories spread across the Bundaberg Region, bringing benefits to the environment and pleasure to the volunteers and people throughout the community who get a great sense of worth and fulfilment by being involved in planting trees.
19.01.2022 This week the Bundaberg Mature Women (BMW) group celebrated its 18th birthday! BMW’s mission is to be a caring, supportive and informed group of mature women who enthusiastically share friendship, skills and life experiences in pursuit of a healthy and contented lifestyle for all members. It was great to be a part of this 'coming of age' celebration.
19.01.2022 I was approached by Roy Wyss and the team to appear on a national caravanning webseries. It was a chance for me to talk tourism and promote our beautiful region on The Caravan Show. You can read about it in the Bundaberg Now story below.
19.01.2022 On Friday I went to the Gidarjil Yalga-Binbi Institute graduation of 14 young people with qualifications in Conservation and Land Management, including Crystal Brown. This is a fantastic program which trains our future rangers and environmental champions. Well done to everyone involved. See the video here: https://youtu.be/uKfeKUoJtIM
18.01.2022 On behalf of the Bundaberg Region community I send sincere condolences to Her Majesty the Queen on the passing of her husband, Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh. The Prince visited Bundaberg with the Queen during the royal tour of 1954. He was much loved by Australians for his sharp wit. He was revered for his service during wartime, loyalty to the Queen and the Commonwealth.... The Australian Government has an online condolence book at https://www.pmc.gov.au/pmc/condolences-form Council will have hard-copy condolence books available for people to sign at customer service centres from Monday afternoon.
18.01.2022 It was great to visit QCWA Bundaberg Branch yesterday and help out with their 98th birthday Scone Day fundraiser. These ladies do a fantastic job and congratulations to all. The pumpkin scones are fantastic!
18.01.2022 I had a look around the impressive new Gin Gin Community Hub today with Cr Wayne Honor. Work is nearing completion and the library will reopen on Monday. This project was a genuine partnership between the three levels of government. Talking to youngsters Max and Holly Harris today, they loved it and Im sure the new centre will be popular in the community.
17.01.2022 It was great to catch up today with Katters Australian Party founder Bob Katter and Burnett state election candidate Paul Hudson. I presented them a copy of Councils advocacy document, which identifies infrastructure priorities requiring government investment. As Mayor, Im proudly independent and engage with politicians from all parties to promote the Bundaberg Region.
17.01.2022 Last night the Federal Hotel and Spotted Dog caught fire. Please avoid the area this morning and expect delays. Main Roads have traffic control in place for a period of time depending on structure of building, trains will commence again early this morning. There has been no injury or loss of life and the fire has been contained. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services - QFES is currently investigating the matter with Queensland Police Service. ... All persons from the accommodation have been relocated after they were processed and interviewed by police at the Civic Centre. My thoughts are with the migrant workers and business owners who have been affected by this terrible event. I would like to thank all emergency services and council staff involved for their great work.
17.01.2022 Today we paused at the 11th hour of the 11th month to remember those who served and those who made the supreme sacrifice. Lest we forget.
17.01.2022 I was honoured to be interviewed by the Queensland Futures Institute for their Queensland Leaders Insights Series. I always welcome an opportunity to talk up the positive outlook we have in the beautiful Bundaberg Region.
16.01.2022 I've been really encouraged by the positive community reation to Council's vision to plant one million trees in four years. 16.01.2022 Its been a tough year for local businesses but were starting to see rays of hope. Nominate now for the Bundaberg Region Business Excellence Awards to celebrate local business success.
16.01.2022 I'm pleased to announce the Holy Grail of Australian Football will be coming to the Bundaberg Region next week as part of a Queensland tour before the Grand Final in Brisbane. I wrote to the AFL asking for a Bundaberg stopover after seeing a proposed itinerary which bypassed us. AFL boss Gillon McLachlan replied today that he appreciates the support the league has received this year from Queensland and the interest from residents in the Bundaberg Region.... "Our Cup is something that we do want fans to be able to see close-up ... and I am glad to report that venue arrangements will be altered so that Bundaberg will now be a stop on its tour," he wrote. Details will be advised in the next few days. Read more: http://bundynow.com/gza2
15.01.2022 The $18 million upgrade of the Gregory River Water Treatment Plant is on track to deliver improved water quality for Childers and Woodgate and enable growth.
15.01.2022 Today is Australian Citizenship Day and I was honoured to welcome 45 new Aussies in a special COVID-safe ceremony at the Bundaberg Multiplex. Im pictured with Luatimu Toilolo Maseesee who arrived here in 2013, and is proud to call Bundaberg home. See the video here: https://youtu.be/ZDnGHrR7mEo

I presented them a copy of Council's advocacy document, which identifies infrastructure priorities requiring government investment. As Mayor, I'm proudly independent and engage with politicians from all parties to promote the Bundaberg Region.
14.01.2022 Council is working with local businesses to make them Defence ready because we believe the Port of Bundaberg has potential to host an increased presence of Navy and Border Force personnel.
14.01.2022 Congratulations to Tom Smith for Bundaberg for being elected in the seat of Bundaberg. Tom ran an impressive campaign and it’s good for Bundaberg to have a voice in Government. I look forward to working with him to see the Government deliver its commitments for Bundaberg, including a new Level 5 hospital, flood protection and an expanded TAFE College.... I don’t believe that Labor won this election simply because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Bundaberg result reflected their promises to invest locally in significant new infrastructure and social support. To outgoing Member David Batt MP, thank you for representing Bundaberg with dedication over the past three years. Congratulations also to our two returning local Members, Stephen Bennett MP and Colin Boyce MP - Member for Callide.
14.01.2022 Congratulations to Jamie Olsen for winning this year's Hinkler Innovation Award, also to St Luke's Year 12 students for winning the junior award. It was fantastic to see Bert Hinkler's legacy of innovation being celebrated today in the Bundaberg Region. It's terrific that we have bright, innovative people like Jamie who have gone away and been successful but come back to share their journey, inspire others and invest in developing the next generation of leaders and innovators.... 14.01.2022 I'm disappointed to hear the ANZ Bank Childers Branch will close in February next year. Banking services are vital in regional communities. Many banks are changing their business models to online service delivery but there's always a need for face-to-face interaction. The Childers area is growing and I hope other financial services might see an opportunity to gain more business. Losing any jobs in Childers is a blow to the community.
13.01.2022 It was a pleasure to catch up with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk at Parliament House today to discuss Councils advocacy priorities. These include a new regional aquatic centre, Anzac Park redevelopment, the 10-year flood action plan, Challenger Learning Center and road upgrades. The Premier was very interested in these projects and I invited her to the Bundaberg Region in coming weeks for further discussions.

13.01.2022 Three historic fig trees on Walker Street, within the Mutliplex complex, were lit for the first time over the weekend as part of a special Council project. This week they will be purple to help raise awareness for Queensland Mental Health Week. I hope these trees being lit up will bring some joy and peace to people who are suffering.

11.01.2022 Have you ever noticed that most statues and public monuments honour famous men? Minister for Women, Shannon Fentiman MP, wrote to me this week, suggesting there should be more recognition of women in public spaces. I think she's right, and hope to start a community conversation. With government support, I believe we could be creative with public art while honouring some of our amazing women and inspiring young girls today and future generations.... There are many famous women who were born in Bundaberg and/or did great things here, including Margaret Mittelheuser who was the first female stockbroker in Australia. Share your thoughts in the comments or on Bundaberg Now: http://bundynow.com/xsuj The picture from the Australian War Memorial shows "Our Glad", Gladys Moncrieff, with troops during WW2.
11.01.2022 The gold in Australias green and gold national colours is derived from the iconic wattle bloom. Today is National Wattle Day and this symbol of Australia is a widespread reminder of the beauty and vibrancy of our nation. A vulnerable species, the Whipstick Wattle is conserved at Meadowvale Nature Park. The Aussie wattle its a beauty!
11.01.2022 Thanks to Mikayla Haupt from NewsMail for highlighting Council's State Election advocacy priorities around flood protection, a new hospital and water security: http://ax.lv/5o (paywall). More to come.
11.01.2022 Don't forget to visit Buss Park between 9-10am on Thursday, if you can, to see the holy grail of AFL the 2020 Premiership Cup. Wear your team's colours and take the opportunity for a photo with the sport's biggest prize. Thanks to a Fitzroy tragic I donned the old Lions colours today. Hope to see many Lions fans there tomorrow, young and old.
10.01.2022 I'm hopeful that QFES will base a large air tanker at Bundaberg Airport during the fire season. Bundaberg has a proven record of supporting aerial firefighting efforts. Last year, crews working from here set a record for the most water bombers filled in one day. A large air tanker could reach as far as Proserpine in Northern Queensland, Tambo in Western Queensland and right down to Coffs Harbour in New South Wales within an hour of leaving the Bundaberg Airport.
09.01.2022 The State Budget will be tabled in State Parliament on Tuesday and indications are there will be significant spending measures to stimulate the economy. It’s important the Bundaberg Region gets our fair share. The Government needs to make firm funding commitments to flood protection, a new Bundaberg Hospital and expansion of Bundaberg TAFE as promised during the election.... Although a new Level 5 hospital is still in the planning stage, funding should be provided in the forward estimates to show the Government is serious about delivering this essential service. Council would also welcome any extension to Works for Queensland, improvements to State roads, other local infrastructure projects and increased funding for mental health and community services.

09.01.2022 It was fantastic to get aong today for the blessing and official opening of St Joseph's Catholic Kindgergarten in Bundaberg. Thank you and congratulations to everyone involved.
09.01.2022 Its great that TMR will soon widen Childers Road to install a dedicated left-turn lane into University Drive. This will improve safety at the busy intersection and benefit people driving to the university, waste management facility and recreation precinct.
09.01.2022 It was great to catch up with Mark Bailey MP - Labor for Miller and Tom Smith for Bundaberg to say its full steam ahead and pedal to the metal for the Bundaberg to Gin Gin Rail Trail. Mark, the state Transport Minister, today announced $9.5 million in Queensland Government funding towards the project. Full story: http://bundynow.com/um82
08.01.2022 Have you checked out the weekly e-magazne by Bundaberg Now? It is comes out every Saturday at 7am and has some great stories and original content. Take a look at this weeks edition featuring a great local business Meant to Bee Tranquil Apiaries and see how Woodgate is recovering after the bushfires. https://www.bundabergnow.com/?p=44278
06.01.2022 It is great to see the North Bundaberg drainage project nearing completion. Council staff and contractors have been working hard to improve drainage issues in the area and deliver the project on time. The new drainage will benefit nearby businesses and residents by helping water to drain quicker during storm events and general rainfall.
06.01.2022 See how Council worked with developers to create a "natural" waterway for storm run-off to flow into nearby wetlands and the Burnett River. This is a great example of everyone working together to achieve a terrific environmental outcome.
06.01.2022 Bundaberg Regional Council has signed up to be a Reef Guardian Council for 2020-24 to support a healthy Great Barrier Reef. Our community has a passionate and very strong connection with the Reef. With the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the eastern Australian mainland, and the most significant loggerhead turtle nesting population in the South Pacific region right in our backyard, the Reef is a fundamental part of our identity.... Councils commitment includes activities centred around stormwater management, litter reduction and waterways clean-ups. Read more: http://bundynow.com/0apn

06.01.2022 It is great to see the amazing community spirit that has been shown to those affected by the Federal Backpacker Hostel fire. Below is an update from the Local Disaster Management Group. UPDATE - Federal Backpacker Hostel fire The Bundaberg Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) has been working closely with local support providers and businesses to support those impacted by the Federal Backpacker Hostel fire. We have now reached the point where the immediate and medium-term ...needs of the backpackers have been met. All needs relating to clothing, backpacks, suitcases, prescription glasses, medical supplies, work-clothes and PPE have now been met through donations of goods and vouchers. Donated emergency phones were distributed to allow the backpackers to maintain telephone contact with family and friends in home countries. Counselling has been offered to all backpackers, the hostel operators and the proprietors of the Spotted Dog. Thank you to everyone involved in the support and recovery for those affected. At this time the LDMG asks that you do not make any further donations directly to the hostels. If you wish to donate or offer support, contact your local charity organisation.
05.01.2022 I was pleased to attend the launch of "Pick of the Crop" today at Kalkie State School with Bundaberg Fruit & Vegetable Growers and Tom Smith for Bundaberg. The program involves local growers working with schools to get kids eating more fresh fruit and vegetables. It's a great initiative to promote healthy lifestyles while raising awareness about local primary industries. Read more: http://bundynow.com/4rfn
05.01.2022 Its been tough for sportspeople during COVID-19 restrictions, but thankfully community sport is now getting back to close to normal. Last week I was pleased to join Cr Vince Habermann in presenting a UCI Cycle Fest International Council-sponsored jersey to local young cyclist Harriet Mullins. Harriet is a deserving recipient. Shes been with Bundaberg Cycling Club for three years and we look forward to seeing her don the jersey and compete with it in future years.
05.01.2022 Queensland borders are now open to all of Australia, except Victoria, and I encourage everyone to give interstate visitors a friendly welcome to the Bundaberg Region. Its been a difficult few months for many families and businesses who have been separated from loved ones and associates. Tourism is a vital industry for the Bundaberg Region and we now have a small window of opportunity to catch up after the last few months of closure.... Hundreds of people will gain work and there are flow-on benefits to the rest of the local economy. Please also welcome our Victorian visitors who arrived here before Melbourne was locked down. Most of country Victoria is no worse affected than Queensland and theres no reason to treat Victorians differently. A lot of hire cars have Victorian number plates, so dont assume the drivers are illegal arrivals. Always follow public health advice. If youre feeling unwell, isolate and get tested.

04.01.2022 It was an honour to catch up with Associate Professor Derek Richard last week during his visit to the Bundaberg Region. He's one of Queensland's leading researchers, involved with projects including a COVID-19 vaccine, anti-cancer and anti-ageing drugs. He attended our Bundaberg Jobs Commitment breakfast on Friday after inspiring local secondary school students over the previous few days.

04.01.2022 Today I had the pleasure of hosting Annastacia Palaszczuk MP and Stirling Hinchliffe MP. We discussed a number of shovel ready projects that will generate jobs, boost our local economy and help build Australias best regional community. I welcome the State Government announcement that a site for the new level 5 hospital in Bundaberg has been selected, with early stages starting in 2021. The new hospital is a once in a generation project that will deliver jobs and flow on ben...efits to our region for many years. 04.01.2022 Today I attended the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Bundaberg & District Prostate Cancer Support Group. In Australia, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, and sadly about 3500 Australian men die of prostate cancer each year. More men die of prostate cancer than women die of breast cancer. Thank you to Rob McCulloch and team for providing such an important service, affiliated with Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
03.01.2022 I'm really proud that Council has been able to deliver the new Gin Gin Community Hub in partnership with the State and Federal Governments. As this video shows, it's a fresh, modern and inviting facility which brings together Council services with the library and home and community care. We look forward to an official opening with our funding partners after the State Election.
03.01.2022 SSAA Bundaberg Q32 welcomes new members. The range reopened last week and is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. I was pleased to visit recently and see the excellent set-up.
03.01.2022 I'm calling on State MPs, political parties and candidates to commit to improving boat ramps in the Bundaberg Region if they're elected in October. A 2017 report identified upgrade opportunities at Riverview, Walkers Point, Burnett Heads, Strathdees Road, Sandy Hook, Kalkie and Booyan. Bundaberg Region residents love our boating and fishing, and we pay a lot of money in boat registration fees. More of that needs to be invested in better infrastructure.... 02.01.2022 I spoke recently with Life Sciences Queensland about some of the amazing things that are happening in the Bundaberg Region. Life sciences are critical to human health, sustainable development and economic prosperity, spanning medical devices and diagnostics, medicines, agricultural and marine biotechnology, animal health and bio-energy. We have the Bundaberg bioHub with Utilitas, other projects looking to transfer waste to energy and emerging opportunities in hydrogen.
02.01.2022 Five hundred trees were planted at Baldwin Swamp Environmental Park this morning to officially launch the One Million Trees Bundaberg program. It was wonderful to see so many members of our community in attendance because a shared commitment is needed to meet the target. Trees have a positive impact on our environment, health and community. They help to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas entering the atmosphere, prevent erosion, provide habitat for biodiversity and give shad...e. By Council working together with community groups, farm organisations and private landholders I’m confident we can dig deep and plant one million trees.
02.01.2022 Update - Federal Backpacker Hostel fire I would like to thank the Bundaberg Region for the overwhelming support that has been shown to those affected by the Federal Backpacker Hostel fire. Members of the Local Disaster Management Group, including aid agencies Lifeline Bundaberg and Red Cross Bundaberg, have met to discuss the welfare requirements of the backpackers affected by the Federal Backpacker Hostel fire. ... The individuals are safe and had their immediate needs met. Bundaberg Regional Council and the aid agencies would like to thank the Bundaberg Region community for the generosity they have shown. At this time the Local Disaster Management Group ask that the community stop donating clothing, shoes, bedding, towels, food, toiletries and medication for the backpackers. A co-ordination centre has been set up at Lifeline Bundaberg, 8 Queen Street, North Bundaberg. Those wishing to donate can assist by providing the following items: Wide-brimmed, straw hats Vouchers/gift cards in lieu of cash donations - to enable the backpackers to purchase items to meet their individual needs.

01.01.2022 I welcome the easing of coronavirus restrictions, announced today, effective 4pm Tuesday, 17 November. This reflects how well Queensland has managed the coronavirus. Council will review operating arrangements at venues, events and functions in response to the Government's announcement. This includes potentially increasing by 500 people each night the number who can attend our Merry and Bright Christmas lights event at the Botanic Gardens on December 12-13. It's a credit to An...nastacia Palaszczuk MP and Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young that we are in this fortunate position today compared with what's happening elsewhere in the world. Last week I wrote to Dr Young, suggesting that restrictions be eased for funerals and religious worship. It seemed contradictory at the time that large crowds were attending markets and rugby matches, but numbers were severely limited at funerals. This latest announcement is a sensible response to the current situation. We should all remain vigilant, continue social distancing where possible and maintain good hygiene.
01.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who turned out to see the 2020 AFL Premiership Cup in Buss Park today. AFL officials were impressed with the crowd and the enthusiastic welcome. Thank you also to the media for helping to promote the visit. Go Brisbane Lions!
01.01.2022 There were plenty of stories being told at Cordalba State School on Friday during their annual Read to Me Day activities. Literacy is so important and Im pleased to see engaging programs being implemented across local schools. Read to Me Day is a very practical and enjoyable way of sharing valuable time with children and providing a positive outcome.
