12.01.2022 "Listen to us, and learn from us Australia, okay? Our eagles are watching over our land and anyone wanting to steal our cultural heritage. Our senior men are safeguarding the traditional lands and cultural heritage. Our land and sacred heritage is eternally enduring. Open your ears, and don't claim our cultural heritage as yours, nor damage our land. Theft or misuse of this land and this Tjukurpa is a criminal offence. Penalties apply." 06.01.2022 If people understood the history better they would understand the disadvantage that many Indigenous people live with today." (Michael Cook) Indigenous artist, Michael Cook, creates striking works using historical references that tease out and reverse the racist practices imposed on First Nations people. 04.01.2022 "I’m bored..." - just a snatch of a conversation I heard whilst walking in the park. My very first instinct was to say to this perfect stranger, "How can you be bored? There’s so much to be engaged with even in these times of isolation: online lectures, podcasts, concerts, Netflix, reading cooking, gardening..." Blah blah blah, I said to myself feeling very self righteous and judgmental. But of course, I said nothing and walked on. And then I thought about it. This stranger i...n the park was possibly expressing what many of us feel when we actually are doing nothing that absence of a sense of purposefulness and the inherent guilt that sweeps over us. But what about allowing that sheer luxury and indulgence of doing nothing" to be present with no judgment. I don’t know about you, but my default position is to be busy. I like the act of doing. It gives me my daily fix - my dopamine hit. It’s not good or bad it’s just my normal. Maybe modern life has made me too busy, too busy to be still more often and just daydream. Perhaps I need to be bored more often. What am I afraid of, I wonder? Boredom has been described as a silent emotion. When it’s negative, it embraces apathy, indifference and even depression - but can it be a positive emotion too? When we are bored are we doing nothing? A recent British experiment revealed a group tasked with reading the phone book (remember that hefty best seller?) who were then offered a creative option of designing as many things as they could with two paper cups. They fared better than another group simply allowed to write. But why? Writing used more of the cognitive load. You might want to remember that when you are next doodling in a meeting. Despite the vast array of characters, those reading the endless list of names and addresses in the phone book could let their neural pathways relax. Somehow mindless, repetitive reading allowed the day dreaming to kick in. And that can have great outcomes. So boredom can be a positive emotion too. A vessel for creation and innovation in whatever form that takes. How many artists, writers and musicians talk of the gestation period required for a work to be created... that period almost of fallow that allows new ideas to seed. Perhaps we all need to have a little more of that. OK - Confession time. Mindlessness and mindfulness mostly elude me. I am known as an energiser bunny, looking for the endorphin kick that comes from activity - mental and physical (eating counts!). I am rarely bored but seeing it is a safety valve for creativity and innovation, I am longing to be bored pretty soon and more often. It might be the only way I will get creative enough to figure out how to use the remote control - unassisted by Charles - to watch something, just in case I get... you guessed it - bored. image by @aykutmaykut, Summer Dreams, 2020, as seen @CovidArtMuseum, a great display of global art born during COVID-19 quarantine.

03.01.2022 What happens when our perceptions of the world are predominantly mediated through digital channels, which is happening now in our lockdown mode? This is even more disconcerting when the digital representation can be so easily manipulated by outside sources. In our language, expressions such as ‘to see the light’, ‘to be illuminated’, ‘the light at the end of the tunnel’, implies acquiring greater knowledge and understanding of the world we live in. The question is, does this apply to the light emanating from our smart phones, computers and TV’s? See more great works like Taree Mackenzie's, Pepper's Ghost, Diamonds, Green and Magenta, 2018 in JAHM’s 2019 exhibition ‘Let There Be Light’ on our website. https://www.jahm.com.au/2019-let-there-be-light

01.01.2022 @ash_keating is a wonderful artist and we are fortunate to have several of his works in our collection. He has pivoted, a new concept in our COVID-19 vocabulary, and with his partner Annalisa have developed a series of masks based on his beautiful paintings. So in addition to hanging art on your walls, you also do it on your face, where you can be both protected and an art lover. Check out his insta @ash_keating for more details
