25.01.2022 Things I love about Bassendean: Bassendean State Emergency Service Santa coming to Town.
24.01.2022 Things I love about Bassendean...
19.01.2022 A glorious morning planting trees to help stabilise our riverbank with the hard working volunteers of the Bassendean Preservation Group. We got them all in just in time for the rains next week.
19.01.2022 Honoured today to have Whadjuk Noongar Elder Nick Abraham give his welcome to country and smoking ceremony for Councillors and staff at the EMRC - Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council. Nick explained to us how moort (family), koort (heart), and kaartitjin (knowledge) are central his connection to boodja (country). #alwayswasalwayswillbe
19.01.2022 A good way we can come together, and be safely apart, at dawn with our neighbours this ANZAC day to remember those affected by the horrors of war. Bring your radio and dial into the abc.
19.01.2022 Beautiful day to give the new FoGo bin a bit of a work out.
19.01.2022 Here is the latest advice from our Premier on the easing of Covid lockdown restrictions. Great work, Neighbours.
18.01.2022 If you listened to abc 720 radio this morning, or followed the coverage from other media outlets about the Federal Court's decision on casual employment, you could be forgiven for thinking the case was about casual workers in the hospitality industry. It was not. The case was about a Mr Robert Rossato, a man who was employed for three and a half years by a labour hire company as a permanent worker despite being labelled a "casual" in his contract. While this man was working ...seven days on, seven days off with 12 hour shifts set well in advance, his employer wanted to retain the right to sack him for no reason at an hour's notice, and not provide him with any sick leave, carer's leave, or annual leave by calling him a 'casual'. In his decision, the Judge decided that workers who work regular and predictable shifts with a firm advance commitment to work are not 'casuals' despite how they are described in their employment contracts, and they are therefore entitled to paid annual, sick and carer's leave. It is likely that Employer groups will appeal this decision to the High Court. The Commonwealth government may also step in and take away this win from working people with legislation as they have done in the past. We will see what happens. In the meantime, what remains true is that thanks to Robert Rossato standing up for himself, working people around Australia (and yes, also in the Town of Bassendean), now have the right to say to their bosses: "My job is clearly full-time, regular and ongoing. This means I am not a 'casual' just because you want to call me that, and I deserve the security and entitlements that come with permanent work." Pass it on.
17.01.2022 Lock-down diary: what comes next I am one of the lucky ones. My workplace and my wife’s workplace both transitioned to working from home arrangements three weeks ago. This gave my wife and I the ability to bring our kids home to school with us so we could take pressure off the teachers and the parents who were not able to do what we could. We have chickens and a good supply of long life ingredients like flour, rice and dried legumes, which means we can make bread and liv...Continue reading
17.01.2022 Just some of the hundreds of new street trees planted in Ashfield yesterday. We have made Ashfield a priority tree planting area because the power lines are already underground. This means the trees will be free to grow huge without being pruned to fit under powerlines.
16.01.2022 Great to meet up with Renée McLennan, Bassendean Mayor and Cr Dan Bull - Mayor, City of Bayswater in my capacity as Chair of the EMRC - Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council to discuss the new composting plant the EMRC is building to process the Food Organics and Garden Organics (FoGO) waste going in the new lime green lid bins later this year. Renée and Dan are both leading Councils dedicated to reducing land fill levy charges and green house gas emissions for their communities and creating compost to enrich our soils.
16.01.2022 The EMRC - Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council received the first load of FoGo waste from the Town of Bassendean today at the Red Hill Tip. All systems (Fo)Go!
15.01.2022 COVID 19 Response: Stage 2 On Monday, the Town of Bassendean Council acted to care for our staff; take cost pressure off our ratepayers; and redirect resources from events to caring for our community and helping our community care for each other. Today, we began Stage 2 of our response targeted at assisting the small businesses in our community.... Many of the local businesses I frequent are facing tough and uncertain times ahead. Some businesses, like the good people at Bassendean Physiotherapy, have the good fortune of being able to move to on-line service delivery. If you would like to book a video appointment with them, you can call them on 9279 7411. Other businesses like Holly Raye's and our Pubs and cafes have closed, or are closing soon and face uncertain futures. Incomprehensibly, one person, one room operations capable of sterilisation between clients, like Revive Massage Retreat, have been directed to close, while our shopping centres currently remain open. My heart goes out to each and every one of you experiencing similar situations and I will miss our regular interactions as we lock-down to slow the movement of this virus. If you have found new ways to operate, please let our Town staff know at: [email protected] so we can spread the word for you via the Town's social media and web page and help keep you connected and doing business with our community. If you have been laid-off work, or know you are about to be laid-off work, as a result of COVID19 closures, you can register your intention to claim a Centrelink payment by following this link: https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au//how-register-your-in As you may have read, the Commonwealth Government has announced some new assistance measures for businesses and sole traders in response to the COVID19 pandemic. You can read more about the WA State government measures here: https://www.smallbusiness.wa.gov.au//wa-coronavirus-relief or you can contact the SBDC on 133 140. I expect there will be more announcements on further State and Commonwealth stimulus packages in the near future.
14.01.2022 The EMRC - Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council is one step closer to being able to provide Food Organics and Garden Organics composting for the whole East Metro and beyond.

10.01.2022 COVID 19 Response: Stage 1 This evening, the Town of Bassendean Council held a Special Council Meeting to approve the first stage of our response to the COVID 19 pandemic. We worked together to unanimously pass a series of resolutions to provide additional personal protective equipment for our essential service staff and an additional 20 days paid leave for any Town staff who contract COVID-19; need to care for another person who has COVID-19 or is required to self-isolat...e; cannot access school or other care arrangements because of COVID-19; or are otherwise prevented from working because of COVID-19. We directed the CEO to prepare the next budget on the basis of a 0% rate revenue increase and decided that any proposal for under grounding power to the identified area of Eden Hill and Bassendean not impact home owners in the 2020-21 financial year. We delegated authority to the CEO to redirect all unused sponsorship, events and commemorative services funding for the remainder of this financial year to facilitate community outreach services. We also delegated authority to the CEO to accept our Town's share of the $13.7m FoGo package the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council released from their strategic reserves to reduce our Town's costs in transitioning to the three bin FoGo system. We launched an online Neighbour Assist service that seeks to provide support to vulnerable and isolated people and connect them to staff and volunteers who can connect them to help and support. A dedicated hotline is in the process of being set up to compliment this online service. The number will be 9377 8099 and should be fully operational in a matter of days. In the meantime time, please follow the link below to the online portal to register your ability to help others, or your need to be helped. In short, we have acted to care for our staff; take cost pressure off our ratepayers; and redirect our resources from events towards caring for our community and helping our community care for each other. We do this because these are the values of our community: we pull together and help others in need. And lastly, a personal message just from me: stay at home whenever possible and reduce social contacts with other people as best you can. Not for you, not for me, but for the health care workers in our community who will be forced to make the choice of who to treat and who to leave die in a corridor if we do not. This is not a drill. https://www.yoursay.bassendean.wa.gov.au/neighbour-assist-i
09.01.2022 FoGo Waste & Chook Update: April 2020 A quick video update on FoGo Waste Reform and Chickens from Cr Jai Wilson of the Town of Bassendean.
08.01.2022 The councillors of the EMRC understand the pressures our member councils are under to keep rates down and at the same time deliver on the services their communities need, EMRC Chairman Jai Wilson said. That is why we have taken decisive action to pay a dividend of $5 million to assist our member councils with their upcoming budgets and ease some of the cost pressures on our communities.
05.01.2022 When we built the long awaited Men’s Shed there was some concern in our community about some trees that would be lost to make way for the construction of the new shed. That is why I moved an amendment to the motion approving the project, that received the support of a majority of my fellow Councillors, to offset the loss of these trees by planting 100 new street trees in the industrial area near the Men’s Shed. The State government also subsequently agreed to provide assistance with landscaping a water wise garden out the front of the new shed. I am pleased that the planting of these trees and gardens has now been completed and watered-in nicely with the recent rains. I look forward to watching these trees and gardens grow to provide shade and habit for birds over the next few decades.
05.01.2022 A big week for the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council. We received our license to process the FoGo waste for the Town of Bassendean and City of Bayswater at the Red Hill Waste Management facility, and we also took delivery of the components to build our new Mobile Aerated Floor processing unit. Great to inspect the progress on site today with Renée McLennan, Bassendean Mayor.
04.01.2022 Over the last century, working people organised and won conditions like paid sick leave that allowed us to still pay our bills if we needed to stay home to rest and recover and stop our workmates and customers from also getting sick. The rise of the gig economy and casualisation of industries such as hospitality has stripped these conditions away from many people in our community and we are all worse off for it.
04.01.2022 The day I got sworn in as a Councillor, I took a minute to stop and read the old wooden board outside the Council chambers of the names of former Councillors to appreciate those who had served before me. My eye was drawn to another Wilson. I wondered in that moment if he might have been a distant relation. I subsequently learned the story of how, at the age of 40, and as a sitting Councillor W.J. Wilson had enlisted to serve in the Australian Medical Corps (AMC). I learned t...hat, like my Maternal grandmother, he had been born in Calcutta India, a part of the British Raj before moving to Perth to start a new life. I also learned that he was hospitalised twice in active service as a stretcher bearer, returning to the front each time before being killed in action at Bullecourt on 30.9.1918 by a shell whilst working with his comrades K.Smith and L.B. Hansen carrying a wounded soldier, E.A. Hinge, on a stretcher from the battle field. In addition to the Councillors Board, his name is also etched into the war memorial in the heart of our Town. He did not need to serve. He was twice the age of most of soldiers he stood beside. He did not need to leave his home and his wife and travel half way around the world to join a conflict in land whose language he did not speak. But he chose to go with the many other young men from his community, our community, knowing that many would be injured or worse, and that he would do whatever he could to carry them to treatment when that happened. It is this selflessness - the belief that we do all we can to help those who have fallen - the belief that we leave no one behind, that represents all that is best about our community and the ANZAC spirit. As it turns out, I am not a blood relation of W.J. Wilson, but I recently discovered that his widow was. Edith Evelyn Wilson (née Watson) of Brooke Street, West Guildford (now Bassendean) was the sister of my Great Great Grandmother. Both were daughters of Lydia Redding, an ancestor who arrived in Fremantle on the ‘Bride Ship’ in 1858. Small world. This ANZAC day I will stand on my verge and remember W.J. Wilson. I will remember my third great-aunt E.E. Wilson, the widow he left behind. I will remember the man whose life he died trying to save. I will remember the awful horrific tragedy that is war. I will hope that we do not see it’s like again.
