20.01.2022 Hey guys, Some of you maybe really surprised by this decision but for the first year in almost 8 years we have made the decision to not breed Tarantulas at all. This was decided due to the amount of Reptiles we have breeding this year and with the store getting busier and busier there is just not enough time in a day. ... We have loved leading the hobby to were it has gotten too and contributing to being the leading producer the hobby has. This is just a year off while we focus on a few other passions we are addicted to and giving the store all the attention it requires. Thanks again as always to all of our 13,000 followers, you guys are amazing and are the drive that has gotten us from just a little setup in a garage to running our own Expo and then onto having our own Hobby Pet Store. Many thanks, James Www.reptilesandinvertebrates.com.au

18.01.2022 Some time hobbys take you places you never thought you'd ever be. I can remember thinking "fuck fish what a headache". Now I have not only learned how to do basic plumbing and maintenance, I'm now building my own fish tanks and not little basic tanks. We are talking six footers stocking Cold Water, Tropical, American Cichlid, African Cichlids, Oscars and cute little water lizards like Axolotls. So I guess you could say I have not changed my hobbys over the years, my hobby i...s hobby pets. Do your thing guys, people will talk shit anyway so own it and love what you do!! #unstoppable

14.01.2022 Little something different for you guys this afternoon, simple little recipe for lizards and dragons that can be kept in the fridge for 14 days and freezer for up to 6 months. Ingredients * 125g URS Lizard Food * 30g Medley Mix... * 50g Omnivor Mix * 1 level tea spoon of URS calcium powder * 1 level spoon of URS vitamins and minerals powder * 4 heaped tea spoons of gelatine powder * 1 litre of boiling water Its that easy guys have fun and if you want to add fresh vegetables to it just grate or finely chop that up and mix it through! 14.01.2022 Bit of a "Pro Tip" for you guys, See in these photos of UVB Lights that is sand dust on them, this dust is inevitably going to build up it's just part of having... dragons as they love to dig around the place especially when females are getting ready to lay eggs. This dust builds up and creates an insulator over the glass surface blocking super important UVB and also increases the globes internal temperature causing the globe to burn hotter and thus significantly shorting the globes life span. You'd be surprised how you have never thought about it and looking at your globes seeing it happening right now. Easy fix with a dry microfiber cloth gently wipe over the globe when turned off. Doing this even fortnightly can even give you an extra 3 month on the globes life and UVB output. Often we find the build up of this dust sits on the globes like pictured and even gets into the cooling vents causing them to overheat and blow. Hope this little tip helps get your equipment that little bit further and remember all UVB Compacts should be replaced every 6-9 months and Tubes yearly. Writing the month and year on the plastic of the compacts and metal ends of the tubes will help you remember when you put them in! Phone - 07 4774 6298 Unit 7/585 Ingham Road Mount St John

12.01.2022 Did you know ? Under the Nature Conservation (Wildlife Management) Regulation 2006, It is an offence to tamper with an animal breeding place that is being used... by a protected animal to incubate or rear the animal’s offspring. Interfering with an animal breeding place without the correct management practices in place can come with a $21,540 fine. So what are the correct management practices? Prior to any habitat interference activities commencing, an assessment must be carried out by a suitably qualified and experienced person to identify animal breeding places and implement suitable mitigation and management actions for the identified animal breeding places and habitat. In Queensland, the tampering of an animal breeding place can only happen if the activities are part of an Approved Species Management Program or the person undertaking the tampering activities hold the relevant permit issued by the Queensland government to undertake these tampering activities. A suitably qualified and experienced person, is to monitor these tampering activities and safely capture and rehabilitate any impacted wildlife into the nearest suitable habitat. Breeding places and habitat features such as hollow logs should also be rehabilitated along with the wildlife to ensure the animals have a safe sheltering place. Without these measures in place, wildlife are pushed out of their homes and often injured or die as a result of these activities. So what are the definitions ? Protected wildlife means native wildlife prescribed under the Nature Conservation Act as- (a) extinct in the wild wildlife; or (b) endangered wildlife; or (c) vulnerable wildlife; or (d) near threatened wildlife; or (e) least concern wildlife. tamper with an animal breeding place means- Damage, destroy, mark, move or dig up the breeding place. Animal breeding place means- A bower, burrow, cave, hollow, nest or other thing that is commonly used by the animal to incubate or rear the animal’s offspring’. Suitably qualified and experienced person means- A person with formal qualifications and/or experience in fauna identification and life ecology and environmental management. A person is considered to be suitably qualified and experienced if they meet one or more of the following criteria: An ecological consultant with experience in conducting surveys for animal breeding places; A person who possesses a degree in natural science or similar with experience in conducting surveys for animal breeding places; A person who is a spotter-catcher under a rehabilitation permit issued under the Act. How can you be sure these obligations are being met ? All habitat interference and tampering activities that are done correctly will have a suitably qualified and experienced fauna spotter catcher monitoring the activities. This Fauna spotter will be able to provide a copy of their permit issued by the Queensland Government and a management plan for the activities. In the event that no suitably qualified and experienced fauna spotter is monitoring the activities the person conducting the activities should be able to provide a copy of the Fauna Assessment that shows no animal breeding places or habitat are being tampered with. The more you know, the better we can protect our wonderful wildlife. Want to see the Legislation for yourself ? Find it here >>> https://www.legislation.qld.gov.au//2017-07-01/sl-2006-0205

05.01.2022 Without using Google see who amoung us has been looking at our native species. Who can tell me why Pseudophryne corroboree and Pseudophryne pengilleyi are so unique? If you have to Google say "Googled" in the comments but do not say why from what you found!... Be honest I learned something today myself so no judgement we are all here to learn. So be honest and let's learn something together. These are 100% Australian species so not tricky exotic stuff to confuse anyone. James.
