23.01.2022 Race report: Second ever, and first official ultra in the bag. The guzzler: glass half full... I signed up for this race primarily to support @caleb Heiner, who was going to be running the 100, but through a turn of circumstances (him doing blackall) found myself running it solo. I’d like to say that I had a good lead in, but after looking at my past month of activities, realised I’d done 10 runs in total since October 1st. Only three of these were above 10k. Needless to say I knew it would be tough. Slow and steady was the aim of the game and I managed to hold myself to that. 5k came and went, then 10km, then 18km (checkpoint 1) and before I new it I was passing people. As I made my way up to McAfees lookout (Mt Nebo) everything started churning. Nutrition was good, hydration was good, and the confidence of making ground on people kept my mental state high. I carried this momentum all the way through hell hole, then up and out through CP3 and CP4. It was only then, at 40km did I get my first twinge. Only slight but enough to dial it back a notch, my right hamstring tempted on the edge of cramping. Thankfully with the help of @crampfix I kept it at bay, and found myself riding another wave as I cruised from 40 up to 46. Thinking I was 4km from the finish, I smashed down the remainder of my snacks and crampfix for one last push to the line. Mentally I was done, and physically was not to be far off, until I saw a 5km to go sign at 48km. It was enough to nearly get me. I had really dialled it up thinking I would be done, and the prospect of another 5km was the psychological equivalent of a kick in the dick. That’s when the challenge really began. Niggles amplified, and cramps began to spread. 1km felt like 4, but before I new it I was at Kokoda. Credit is definitely due to the race coordinators, because that was a stupidly delightful way to finish the race. Up and over I went, fighting the urge stop and give in to the muscle’s trying to lock up. But with all good ups, there’s a down, and the last 1700m was time to soak in the achievement and enjoy the fact that I was going to finish. Finish time: 7:52:27 placing 10th in my age group. 21.01.2022 Having survived 5 weeks of warfare through the start of winter, we’re now thinking about what our next challenge is to be. I quite like the sound of riding a return to trip to Mt Barney, with a quick summit trip thrown into the mix. 18.01.2022 Jumped back on the mountain bikes for the first time in 4 years and thankfully finished up without losing any skin. I'm definitely feeling the effects of the previous week of training and have decided to take the day to eat, sleep and recover. Never underestimate the importance of dialing it back and recovering, especially when the body signals it is needed. Better to stop and rest, then run yourself down.

15.01.2022 With the wows done I’ve found myself leaning back into the cardio side of things. . It’s probably the right move given I’m running 50km next Saturday. . 08.01.2022 Thanks to @lachmcfie for egging me on to try some heavier deadlifts. . It’s the first time I’ve gone over 100kgs for the last 12 months and managed to pull 140kg for 3 sets of 7. . Not the prettiest of lifts, but not to shabby given the lack of.... . Followed it up by an unexpectedly hard Metcon . 03.01.2022 Finished up another great team weekend with M5Management. The rain forced a bit of a tweak in the programming, but a big thanks goes to the Phil Stoneman, Brad Beven Triathlon, Al's Bayside Fitness and Maddy Stoneman for organising such a great weekend. It’s awesome having such a great group of people to train and work with and I’m already looking forward to the next camp.
