25.01.2022 This has a lot in it.

25.01.2022 It’s a very provocative statement, at least it is for me. Over the years I’ve seen programs, comments with the notion, change the people around you. Landmark was a big one. It suggests that your world will be okay if difficult, or negative people are not in our life. This is obvious with unrestrained abuse. Yet often people take this sentiment across the board not seeing that potentially it is their own perception and biases that create their version of that person. Unfort...unately, when people struggle their presentations of struggle can easily be created as a reason for some to demonise that person. It’s hard work and at times exhausting to check in, check in again, our biases and negative perceptions. But by doing so it is compassion in action and love for fellow human beings.

23.01.2022 No, no ... and NO.

20.01.2022 Love it when people send you things you never knew. So people, share this! Especially to our sole traders.

18.01.2022 What will Compulsory Independent Assessments mean for you?? Some super important questions about Compulsory Independent Assessments were put forward by so... many of you in the comment thread last week. Many of you asked about the pilot and consultation process, what level of choice and control you will have when this happens, what sorts of assessment tools will be used and how these assessments will function for different groups. Unfortunately we don’t have all the answers! A lot of the information that we need to answer your questions hasn’t been made available yet (which is a bit of a worry in itself ). This post outlines some of the key information we do have and the key information that is not yet available so that we can all be on the same page about what is and isn’t out there at the moment. We will be holding a Zoom meeting in the Accessible Australia Facebook group soon, where you will have the opportunity to raise more questions and concerns with me and the rest of the group!

17.01.2022 This will be another interesting move. Plan managers? Providers who don’t want to be NDIS registered because it cost $7,000. Forced payment system with NDIS approved services and goods? I understand needing to improve, honestly NDIS is the most complex system I’ve worked in! But, if it takes out non registered people, the industry won’t recover.

16.01.2022 Like our children, participants are also vulnerable to sexual abuse. The statistics are too high, almost 2 million Australian adults had experienced at least 1 sexual assault since the age of 15. This means it’s impossible for a tiny percentage of strange, anti social people out there engaging in violent acts of deviant. In fact, studies show they are likely to be married. Side note: This is the very reason our daughter hardly ever went over to friends for a sleepover, the... risk was too great. So be vigilant. If you notice changes in behaviour, ask for a behavioural specialist to assess. Here’s a list from a government site to help with behaviour changes that you may notice. Changes in behaviour may start being aggressive, withdrawn, clingy, have difficulties sleeping, have regular nightmares or start wetting the bed. Avoiding the abuser may dislike or seem afraid of a particular person and try to avoid spending time alone with them. Sexually inappropriate behaviour may behave in sexually inappropriate ways or use sexually explicit language. Physical problems may develop health problems, including soreness in the genital and anal areas or sexually transmitted infections, or they may become pregnant. Problems with learning may have difficulty concentrating and learning. Giving clues may also drop hints and clues that the abuse is happening without revealing it outright.

10.01.2022 When we look back at our history it’s filled with bizarre and odd behaviours. So I wonder?

07.01.2022 When I started therapy many moons ago in my first role as a Lifeline volunteer, inter generational trauma was not yet a proven practice. Now, the traumas of the past are well established factors and viewed as powerful contributors to the pain people experience today. So, the more trauma there is in the past, the more likely there will be trauma in the present with significant impacts.
