These fish are an amazing creature that can live to in excess of 100 years old. Lungfish date back at least 380 million years and fossils indicate the Queensland variety has changed little for 100 million years. These long-bodied, olive-brown fish with paddle-like tails are native to south-east Queenslands Mary and Burnett river systems, but have been intr...oduced elsewhere. While most fish breathe solely through gills, lungfish are equipped also with a lung for breathing air at the waters surface. 06.01.2022 Fish Rescue Mission: Successful Our ecologists and scientists along with experts from JCU: James Cook University, Australia, Griffith University and Jardini... Pty Ltd were deployed on an emergency rescue operation to save rare native fish species from local extinction. The rescue team travelled out to #Killarney in southern #Queensland to relocate #threatened river blackfish, mountain galaxais and spiny crayfish due to poor river conditions. Ongoing drought, extreme heat and recent bushfire conditions had created a dangerous environment for species in living in Spring Creek and fish in the area were at risk. Immediate action was needed, so our team of experts captured 50 blackfish, 150 mountain galaxais and 50 of the crayfish over a two-day operation. These critters are now being taken care of in a specialised refrigerated aquaculture facility where they are being kept as an ark or insurance population until the environment of their homes improve. If youre worried about the team taking too many fish out of the ecosystem, dont fret! They were very selective with the fish taken and purposely left behind the big breeders and took out the little ones that were most vulnerable. If the wild populations do die out in Spring Creek, the captured fish will be released back into the native environment once it is safe from them to return home. #qldenvironment
