25.01.2022 Congratulations Prime Minister @Jacindaardern on winning a second term You are a constant inspiration to us, our community and millions of young women who will follow in your footsteps. Thank you for showing us the power of empathy, honesty, communication and courage. And for providing the next generation of political leaders with a role model that demonstrates that being true to themselves, rather than trying to fit within stereotypical traditional leadership framework works.

25.01.2022 Jasiri SA takes over Bunnings Parafield... for GIRLS TAKEOVER PARLIAMENT! It’s not too late to grab a sausage sizzle or a soft drink to support GTOP 2021. We can’t wait to see you all!

25.01.2022 A very topical article from our friend Dr Blair Williams PhD. "It is clear the Murdoch press has a 'woman problem'. This poses a real obstacle for women in politics, especially those who oppose Murdoch’s conservative ideology." We have witnessed first hand how media commentary deters younger women from politics. What are your thoughts?

24.01.2022 Meet a future Tongan Parliamentarian, Anaseini Participating in Jasiri’s #GirlsTakeoverParliament was a rare experience especially for a Tongan girl in pursuit of leadership, here in Australia. During my experience I was not only empowered as a young women about to takeover the Australian Parliament, but it has also nurtured my growing potential as a youth leader and advocate. ... This experience has equipped me in my endeavor to become well established youth in the field of Politics and International Relations. One day, I want to peruse a career in diplomacy and politics in my home country of Tonga. #FuturePolitician #HumansofJasiri #InternationalYouthDay #YouthforGlobalAction #Tonga

23.01.2022 Another reason to celebrate today Our #GirlsTakeoverParliament Matron, Natasha Stott Despoja AO has been elected to the United Nation’s CEDAW committee (Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women) CEDAW is the top-level UN committee for fighting for equality for women. 21.01.2022 Thank you Andrew Leigh MP for sharing our petition with Suzanne Orr. We need to celebrate the #monumentalwomen and smash the bronze ceiling. There is still time to sign our petition! Help us get to 500 signatures

20.01.2022 New Zealand again leading the way It looks like New Zealand's Parliament will have 48 per cent women. There are also 16 Mori MPs, and the country is also celebrating the election of the country's first MP of African origin, Ibrahim Omer, its first Latin American MP, Ricardo Menéndez March, and its first MP of Sri Lankan heritage, Vanushi Walters. ... It also appears as though 12 of the 120 seats have been won by people from the LGBTQ+ community. In terms of Pasifika candidates, eight won their seats and four more are likely to make it into Parliament. Australia, imagine what’s possible with more diversity in politics. It’s time to have a conversation

20.01.2022 Happy #FearlessFriday Jasiri! As the work week winds down, we want to kick off your weekend with an inspiration boost from Rosie Thomas OAM Rosie is the CEO and co-founder of PROJECT ROCKIT, Australia's youth-driven movement against (cyber)bullying. PROJECT ROCKIT began in 2006, when Rosie and her sister wanted to see action taken on the rise in bullying amongst schoolchildren. Their workshops centred on inclusion, respectful relationships, social leadership, diversity, val...ues and ethics and empathy, empower more than 68,000 school children around the nation in over 300 schools. The company also works with the likes of Google, Instagram, Headspace, Koorie Youth Council and many more to advocate for taking a stand against bullying. Rosie is driven by a #fearless energy and "a relentless belief in a world where kindness and respect thrive over bullying, hate and prejudice.

19.01.2022 STATEMENT: Jasiri is disappointed in the Prime Minister’s inadequate response to the alleged rape of Brittany Higgins, a young female Liberal Party staffer who alleged she was raped by a colleague at Parliament House. Prime Minister Morrison said that his wife instructed him to take the situation seriously, and consider his response should this have occurred to one of his own daughters. ... Mr Morrison shouldn’t need to think like ‘as a father’ to feel the sheer horror over what happened to Ms Higgins. As a human being, he should be able to comprehend that women deserve dignity and respect. One in five women will experience sexual assault, and the other four will spend their lives fearing they will become that statistic. How can we expect young women to aspire to careers in political leadership knowing that this toxic, sexist cover-up culture awaits them? Jasiri demands the Government to: - Organise for an independent review of how the complaints process let Ms Higgins down. - We also call on the Government to establish an independently-enforceable code of conduct that applies to all politicians, not just ministers and specifically deals with gendered violence and workplace harassment.

19.01.2022 Next up our very own Operations Manager! We love working every day to change the face of politics with Ashley When I took part in Jasiri's Girls Takeover Parliament last year, I had no idea that less than a year on, I would end up on the team putting this rich and rewarding experience together. As a university student, with no experience with NGOs, program development or any of the intricacies of building a civic education program from scratch, joining the Jasiri team w...as overwhelming in many ways. Yet, at the same time, it allowed me to channel all my hopes and dreams for society into programs which can help transform society - one empowered young woman at a time. It allowed me to push past my comfort zone and engage with different people and organisations, developing my leadership and coordination skills, and dabble in a little bit of comms and design! Most importantly though, my experience with Jasiri and all the other passionate, smart and brave young women who work as part of our team, has reaffirmed my belief in the need for real political and social change. Being able to work alongside a team of dedicated young women, who also believe in the need to make our democracies more accessible to and inclusive of young women, has pushed me to try even harder to make these hopes a reality. I can't wait to see where these passionate young leaders take us next. #InternationalYouthDay #HumansofJasiri #WomeninPolitics #YouthDay #GirlsTakeoverParliament

18.01.2022 Julia Gillard, Australia’s first and only female Prime Minister, knows as much as anyone on earth how much sexism can be thrown at one person - take a look at her perspective in this Time article!

18.01.2022 NEW PLATFORM ALERT Happy International Day of the Girl Child We love IDG because every year around this day, Jasiri runs our annual #GirlsTakeoverParliament program around Australia and the Pacific. But this year, because of COVID, we've had to put those plans on hold. ... Instead, in honour of this years IDG theme, "My voice, our equal future", we're seizing the opportunity to reimagine a better world inspired and co-created by young women and non-binary people. So, we're so excited to launch our newest venture: The Australian Policy Design Hub The APDH is built around the human-centred design process. We can't wait to use the Hub to unleash Australia's next generation of political leaders and policy shapers Check-in daily as we share more information about the APDH, including our first policy collaboration with our friends at Country to Canberra https://jasiri.org.au/australian-policy-design-hub

18.01.2022 Ruth Bader Ginsburg will forever be remembered as an ardent defender of justice, a trailblazing champion of gender equality and one of the hardest-working humans the world has ever seen. Justice Ginsburg quote inspires Jasiri today women’s rights are an essential part of the overall human rights agenda, trained on the equal dignity and ability to live in freedom all people should enjoy. She was a champion for women’s empowerment, arguing sex discrimination cases tirelessly;... a pioneer in launching the Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union; and fortitude personified when she was only the second women to serve on the U.S Supreme Court. She leaves a legacy of courage behind and her hope and resilience can be seen in all the young women she has empowered. Today we mourn this historic loss. Tomorrow, we will pick up her baton and run with it. Rest in power, RBG.

18.01.2022 #AlumniAlert Whether it’s running for parliament or university roles, we’re so proud of our Alumni and their commitment to make the lives of others better Meet Cat! She was a Jasiri Trailblazer Fellow in 2018 ... She recently launched her campaign to be a General Representative for Proud! for ANU’s ANUSA committee. Cat says she is running on a platform of Mental Health advocacy to better support undergraduate students at the ANU. She says, I am hungry for change. In whatever capacity I can, as a gen rep and as a person who goes to this university and who wants to be PROUD! Of our ANUSA, I will do whatever I can to make the change happen. Good luck Cat!! We’re so proud of you for using your voice to help others. Can’t wait to follow your campaign

18.01.2022 This hit us in the feels Check out Harriets story A young leader within Jasiri and our political establishment, Harriet has a lot to say about #GirlsTakeoverParliament and the power of youth: Prior to Girls Takeover Parliament last year, I felt inadequate. I had a passion for politics but felt working in this area was a distant pipe dream. I certainly wasn't smart enough and the politicians I admired seemed entirely inaccessible.... I had helped the GTP team write a Charter for Young Women in Australian Democracy before the big day. I was informed it would be presented to Prime Minister Scott Morrison but couldn't shake the feeling he would never see it. We were young girls, why would he? On the day of takeover, I was fortunate enough to be partnered with Tim Watts MP. He invested time and effort into creating space for me to share my thoughts and learn. We did a joint press conference with other politicians I really respected and spoke about the need for increased representation of diverse women in politics. That afternoon, the Prime Minister and the female members of Cabinet met with us and accepted our Charter. What! They were kind, interested in what we had to say and standing right before us. I left that day very grateful for how welcome Parliament had made us feel. The next month, I took over the office of Nicole Lawder MLA in the ACT Legislative Assembly. Once again, I was welcomed with open arms. Like Tim, she embraced her role with humility and servitude rather than power and force. I loved my week in her office and was lucky enough to be offered a job as an Advisor. Once again, I thought why am I here? Had I cheated my way in? I have taken jobs and opportunities since. Each time I have felt I was not smart or qualified enough to be in the room. I am not alone in this. Young women will not apply for jobs that they are not overqualified for. We carry an imposter syndrome with every step we take. We do not realise our worth and get left behind. On this international day of youth, it is time young women stopped this toxic cycle and owned what they bring to the table. #InternationalYouthDay #YouthforGlobalAction #HumansofJasiri #CourageGeneration

17.01.2022 Happy #FearlessFriday! We hope our Jasiri fam is staying safe and is ready to welcome the weekend This week we are ending the week with the #fearless Indigenous storyteller Marlee Silva. Marlee is a proud Gamilaroi and Dunghutti woman, and at just 25 years of age, she is the co-founder of Tiddas4Tiddas, a social media platform that has championed stories of Indigenous female excellence, has just published her first book My Tidda, My Sister: Stories from Australia’s First W...omen, and is the host of her own podcast Always was, Always will be Our Stories. Marlee is just one of many change-leaders that believe in the power of female empowerment and Indigenous excellence, and is an inspiration to all young women. Late last year Marlee told Primer So many young girls follow us [on Tiddas4Tiddas] and their messages are the ones I focus on. They said, ‘Thank you for sharing this, it inspires me so much. I love being an Aboriginal woman.’ And that’s what drives me every day. Being driven by the light you give to others? That’s #fearless Photo: ABC

17.01.2022 Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the beginning of 16 Days of Action against Gendered Based Violence. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, emerging data and reports from those on the front lines, have shown that all types of violence against women and girls, particularly domestic violence, has intensified. This is the Shadow Pandemic growing amidst the COVID-19 crisis and we need a global collective effort to stop it. As COVID-19 cases co...ntinue to strain health services, essential services, such as domestic violence shelters and helplines, have reached capacity. More needs to be done to prioritize addressing violence against women in COVID-19 response and recovery efforts. #OrangeTheWorld

17.01.2022 Madam Vice President, not a fictional character in VEEP anymore. But reality. Tonight I reflect on their struggle [the women who came before her], their determination and the strength of their vision to see what can be unburdened by what has been. And I stand on their shoulders.

17.01.2022 What a powerful tribute to New Zealand MP Ibrahim Omer

15.01.2022 Last up for our International Youth Day feature series, is Jasiri’s very own Head of Program’s Over the next few months, we’ll be filling you guys in on the future of Jasiri in a post-Covid world. Olivia has been the driving force of behind our new strategy and initiatives that will transform youth civic engagement education, diverse representation and public policy Australia wide! ... We’re so thankful to have you on our team Olivia! Thank you for sharing your Jasiri story: When I joined on as a Parliamentary Liaison with Girls Takeover Parliament last year, I was unaware it would be such a life-changing experience. As a first-year university student with barely any experience I was merely astounded at being chosen to help pull together this unique experience. Since then, Jasiri has embodied the very values it espouses and has given me and many other young women opportunities to take up leadership positions. We have helped empower young women across Australia to realise their potential, whilst simultaneously uncovering it within ourselves. I have realised the plethora of talented and passionate women all over Australia who deserve a chance to be championed and to have their potential nurtured and Jasiri provides the forum and platform to accomplish that. I have met some amazing women in my position, have been mentored by inspiring women and have a team of young women who are undoubtedly the next generation of Australian change-makers. Regardless of where life takes me, Jasiri will always be an especially important part of my life. #JasiriAustralia #YouthDay #GlobalAction #GirlsTakeoverParliament

14.01.2022 #NationalRelaxationDay Sometimes the hardest thing to do is give yourself a break from trying to save the world...We know the feeling well This National Relaxation Day, take some time for YOU

14.01.2022 Counting has just started for the ACT election - In 2016, ACT became the first the first female parliamentary majority in Australia's political history! We have absolutely loved working with all of these fearless women through #GirlsTakeoverParliament. They’ve demonstrated that no matter the political party, ensuring diverse representation is vital for policy and democracy. ... Good luck to all the women running. And especially Jasiri’s own Adriana Boisen whose running for the seat of Kurrajong We’re extremely proud! Photo: Karleen Minney

14.01.2022 This is our commitment. And a commitment to support more young people with disabilities to work with decision makers and to be the decision makers. While 18% of Australia’s population identifies with having a disability, only 1% of federal parliamentarians in Australia have a disability. The lack of representatives with lived experiences contributes to inadequate funding and policies. In 2021, help us change the face of political leadership to ensure our parliament reflects the Australian community.

14.01.2022 Sunday Reminder Let’s practice being more like Lesley Knope Normalise being your own inspiration!

13.01.2022 Ahhh memories We love taking a trip down memory lane with Maddi as she shares her experience when Jasiri brought four delegates to the @unitednations Commission of the Status of Women Forum I was lucky enough to attend CSW as a Jasiri representative in 2018 and speak at two side events. Attending CSW has been a dream of mine since I first learnt about it in year 7 during a MUNA event. I would not have been able to attend if it wasn’t for Jasiri who were able to secure ...passes for 4 young people to attend and their support in finding funding. CSW afforded me with the opportunity to meet like minded people from a cross the globe, form friendships and business partnerships, learn more about women’s rights around the world and the programs that are in place to empower women. The highlight of my 2 weeks in New York at the UN was speaking to a room of 100 young people about effective communication as a young leader and seeing snow for the first time in my life (at 20!!) #InternationalYouthDay #YouthforGlobalAction #HumansofJasiri #CourageGeneration #womeninleadership #politics

13.01.2022 Have you ever been called a 'political hack'? Perhaps you're studying politics and are fascinated with all things policy-making? Jasiri is currently looking for Public Policy Officers for the launch of our Inaugural Jasiri Australia Public Policy Design Hub. As Public Policy Officer, you will be curating and providing training and support to a number of passionate and driven young people who are dedicated to transforming the state of Australian politics to become more diver...se, inclusive and accessible. You will serve as a leader and key resource for participants in our policy seminars and developmental programs. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please send your resume to Olivia ([email protected]) by 31 October! We're looking forward to hearing from you!

13.01.2022 The first. But not the last. Madam Vice President, tonight, you’ve made #herstory. Tonight, young women and girls and people of colour everywhere will look to you, see you, and know they can be you. Regardless of your political views, this is a monumental moment. When women and people of colour crack those concrete ceilings, we should celebrate it and work towards lifting more to follow in their footsteps.

13.01.2022 What day is it again?

13.01.2022 Congratulations to our fearless Ambassador Elizabeth Lee MLA - Liberal Member for Kurrajong for being elected the leader of the Canberra Liberals! We are extremely proud! Did you know that Elizabeth was the first Korean Australian Member of Parliament in Australia! From our records (please correct us if we’re wrong), but she’s also the first state or territory leader of a party from Asian descent A few years ago, Elizabeth participated in our #ICanRunAustralia national ...campaign. Looking back, we think her words are especially poetic as she makes #Herstory: Dear Younger Me, Your political journey is not an easy one. You will see the best of people and you will see the worst of people. There will be more than once when you will want to throw it all in and walk away. Don't. Facing adversity and challenges are opportunities to learn and grow. Acknowledge and embrace the fact that you will continue to learn for the rest of your life. Know that putting your hand up to be an elected Member of Parliament is an enormous privilege. The job of representing and advocating for people who may not be in a position to do it for themselves is a unique and special role that you must take on with a strong sense of duty and service. Remember those that inspired you and supported you to get you to that privileged position and know that when you are in that position, you must do the same for others. And that is a pretty extraordinary thing. Treasure it. Your Present Me. Since day one, Elizabeth has been a member of our Jasiri family. She, like many other political leaders at all levels of parliament and from all parties, have supported us to unleash the next generation of diverse political leaders. Last year we asked you to imagine what is possible with more diversity in politics. Well with Elizabeth, we don’t have to imagine. Young women and girls of colour will be able to look to her and imagine themselves in senior positions of power, positions where women from marginalised backgrounds in particular still face a concrete ceiling. Together - we will change this reality. Congratulations again Elizabeth, from all of us at Jasiri

12.01.2022 Another Friday has rolled around, which means its time for more #FearlessFriday women! Today we champion Shalini Guleria, a passionate scientist hoping to make STEM accessible to children from all over the globe through Science Box, her own non-profit social enterprise. Guleria was inspired to create Science Box in 2018 after hearing a young girl say science was too hard, mostly for boys and you had to be clever to do it. Now Science Box has taught over 2,000 students through problem solving, teamwork and communication. Guleria is true champion of diversity, continuing to work hard to make her vision of a diverse and accessible STEM world come true Photo: Pink Space Theory

11.01.2022 Happy #FearlessFriday fam! This morning we are bringing you your weekly dose of inspiration with Mercy Sang! At 24, Mercy is a model and the powerhouse founder and editor of POCC (People of Colour Collective) magazine which provides a platform to celebrate underrepresented artists in the creative industries Mercy is a powerful voice for change and inclusion in our society, and in her recent Vogue feature she spoke about her hopes for a more equal future and how to shape th...at world; It’s definitely going to take a long time for us to achieve equality but I think making sure that we are constantly putting these [diverse] communities at the forefront is the start continuously making sure that we are making these platforms like POCC mag the norm. It shouldn’t be something revolutionary, it shouldn’t be something different - it should be the norm. And that should be in every single organisation: to make sure that there is diversity across all spectrums. Photo: Vogue Australia https://poccmag.com

11.01.2022 Today is #EqualPayDay, a day dedicated to calling out the gender pay gap which makes Australian women work an additional 59 days a year to earn the same income earned by men. When we talk about gender equality, many people dismiss the need for concrete action because they assume that the gender pay gap is a myth, or something that has already been resolved. But it's clear that the very basic issue of equal pay for equal work is something that remains unresolved in our soc...ieties. Currently in Australia, the gender pay gap sits at 14% for full-time employees (weekly average of $253.60 difference in earnings!)and is even greater for other intersectional identities. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women experiencing a pay gap of more than $10,000 a year compared to non-Indigenous women, and women with disabilities are less likely to be employed than men with disabilities. Gender equality cannot be achieved until women and non-binary people of all intersections are valued for their contributions and given equal opportunities. Girls and non-binary folx deserve to be treated as equal in all facets of life, and gender discrimination in the workforce is a key barrier that we need to overcome. Let this be a wake up call - we will no longer stand for our time, energy and talent being undervalued and undermined by society. This generation will get rid of the gender pay gap!

11.01.2022 You know we LOVE this moment between Kate and Senator Kristina Keneally. How could we not? It encapsulates Jasiri in a single moment But what we find more powerful is Kate’s story, her message for young people this International Youth Day...and we’re not going to lie, we were pretty emotional reading her pride as a Jasiri Alumni Here’s what she shared with us:... Jasiri gave me the opportunity to be mentored by one of Australia’s leading politicians, Senator Kristina Keneally, in last years Girls Takeover Parliament program. It was such an incredible experience to step into the Senate and hear my words being read aloud by Senator Keneally in Parliament. Young voices matter! Our experiences and opinions belong in the discussion and I’m so proud to have been one of the many young female voices in Parliament that day. Jasiri is amplifying the voices of young women across Australia. The theme of this year’s International Youth Day is ‘Youth Engagement for Global Action’. Jasiri continues to play an active role in encouraging and facilitating youth engagement in Australian politics. By providing young women with the opportunity to engage in and experience Australian politics through programs such as Girls Takeover Parliament, Jasiri is helping to shape our future leaders. There is nothing more inspiring than being in a room filled with incredible young women who know that the world is in their hands! I am so proud to be a Jasiri alumna and believe so strongly in the work that they do. For me, leadership is about passion! I am so grateful to Jasiri for connecting me with so many amazing young women who continue to fuel my passions and who inspire me with the work that they do. #InternationalYouthDay #YouthforGlobalAction #GirlsTakeoverParliament #YouthAction #PoliticalRepresentation #WomeninPolitics

11.01.2022 We. Love. This!! Today, #NewZealand appointed its first Indigenous woman foreign minister. Her name is Nanaia Mahuta, who is Maori, the Indigenous people of New Zealand. According to CNN, New Zealand is shaping up to be one of the most diverse parliaments in the world. ... Raise your hand if seriously think Australia should work harder on making Parliament more diverse? If you do, follow Jasiri and our work and help us make this a reality Congratulations Foreign Minister!

10.01.2022 We’re so proud of Sanjoli! Since being a Girls Takeover Parliament Delegate in 2019, she’s graduated, returned home to India and founded a free mobile school called Sushiksha: Empowerment Through Education Read her story below and how she is transforming lives globally: Jasiri’s #GirlsTakeoverParliament was one of the most intriguing and impactful events of my life. It taught me how, as youth and as females, we had to make our own way if not find one already made. The e...xperience of working with the Parliamentarians gave me a pragmatic insight into the working of politics. Personally speaking, it has reinforced in me the blaze/ spark to step forward and believe in myself and aroused hope in me that as a young female, I am in no way less deserving or unfit for politics and broadly, the change-making process. I have always believed in the power of individual and more specifically, youth. It is often said that the future lies in the hands of youth, well I believe even the present is not in the best hands if youth is not involved!! We, as educated and free minds, should come forward to give voice to our other brothers and sisters. Since GTP, I have graduated from the ANU in International Security Studies Class of 2020 and have returned to India to respect my commitment I made towards the village I adopted in 2018 for community development. I have also initiated a free mobile school called 'Sushiksha: Empowerment through Education' in the same village. I am currently a student of Master of Social Work in India itself. The wide media coverage I got in India following Girls Takeover Parliament has influenced so many people and I am privileged that I could become an example for millions of Indians, thanks to Jasiri!! I would like to dedicate my GTP experience to millions of girls across the globe and especially in India, who have been deprived of the right to education. And to all the young women out there who were hushed/ discouraged from entering politics because it is too male-dominated, else who knows they might be in the Parliament today voicing my concern!! #YouthDay #Changemaker #HumansofJasiri #educationispower

10.01.2022 In case you missed it! For the first time in its 25-year history, the World Trade Organization will be led by a woman The final two candidates vying for the position of Director General include Nigeria's Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and South Korea's Yoo Myung-hee. We wish both these powerhouse game changing women luck in the final process!

10.01.2022 One of our first ever Girls Takeover Parliament delegates. Back when we had a little dream to create a platform for young women to enter politics When our program started with 16 fearless young women to took a chance on us Read Courtney's story: My experience with #GirlsTakeoverParliament is one that I not only still look at fondly but the value to this day.... Shadowing Senator Linda Reynolds, who at the time was relatively new and unknown in the world of politics allowed me first-hand experience into a life of a politician. Having since seen Senator Reynolds political career grow into what it now shows me where you can get to with hard work and determination. After GTP I was inspired to do more in my community. I went on to join my student representative council at university, as well as be an active member in different committees and was even elected the Women’s Officer in my final year of study. Since then I embarked on my own journey to Sydney and have been working in the corporate sector for over a year and working my way up. I know the importance of having a strong female mentor to look to and am lucky I have my own at my current work as well as being able to be that for others. Something that has helped me be successful that I learnt from GTP is to be vocal and active with what it is I’m trying to achieve. That has seen me make strong personal and professional relationships. I’m happy working in corporate sales helping to grow the gender balance but will always have one eye looking into Parliament, making sure I see happen what we set out to achieve. #internationalyouthday #HumansofJasiri #CourageGeneration

10.01.2022 Policy Brief: Youth mental health service access and education in rural areas For many young people and rural, regional and remote Australia, gaining access to mental health services is difficult. Yet, with the compounding uncertainties around COVID-19, climate change, job security and more. It's more vital than ever, we support policymakers to ensure every young person has access to quality services and support. ... We want to thank Country to Canberra alumni, Freya, Anna and Michelle (AKA. FAM), for working extremely hard on this policy brief and for sharing their lived experiences with us. We are so proud of you championing this cause Check it out! https://jasiri.org.au/australian-policy-design-hub

09.01.2022 Thank God it’s #FearlessFriday! Today we want to highlight the #Fearless energy of Amelia Telford Amelia is a Bundjalung woman from Northern New South Wales. After finishing high school, Amelia deferred her university studies to develop a program through the Australian Youth Climate Coalition that gave power to the voice of Indigenous youth in climate change and standing up for country. She became the first ever Indigenous Coordinator at the Australian Youth Climate Coalit...on and is now the national director and founder of Seed, Australia's only Indigenous youth climate network. When it comes to activism and politics, the 24 year old trailblazer finds grounding in her heritage. In her own words, she says; "I signed my first petition when I was at high school in Lismore, but really my activism started much earlier. Being an Aboriginal woman, you are born into politics, and I was really lucky to be brought up in a family that had such strong values around looking after our land and looking after each other. My friends and family supported me to not only feel that responsibility, but to do something about it." See more

09.01.2022 Happy #FearlessFriday Jasiri fam! This week we are kicking off the weekend with Marita Cheng AM. At 31 years old Marita Cheng was inducted as the youngest Member of the Order of Australia in 2019, named by Forbes as one of the World's Top 50 Women In Tech 2018, Forbes 30 Under 30 2016, and 2012 Young Australian of the Year As a technology entrepreneur, Cheng has demonstrated vision and leadership for positive change throughout majority of her life. In her second year of st...udying mechatronics at the University of Melbourne, she noticed the low number of girls in her engineering classes and rounded up her fellow peers to attend schools and teach girls robotics as a form of encouragement to get involved in STEM. Marita expanded this group to London when she was there on academic exchange, and then expanded Robogals throughout Australia, the UK, the USA and Japan. She is also the founder and CEO of Aubot - which makes a telepresence robot, Teleport, that allows for greater social accessibility for people in hospital, people with a disability, elderly people and anyone whose societal engagement is impacted - and is a co-developer of Aipoly Vision - an object recognition app that communicates detailed information via text or voice about whatever the phone is pointed at from the colour of a shirt (it can distinguish more than 1400 shades) to the breed of a dog - that assists the visually impaired. Marita gets a #fearless thrill from having a positive impact on society. She says I like to create things that impact people in their everyday lives. Photo: maritacheng.com.au

09.01.2022 Bri is Jasiri’s self professed #StyleGuru We’re so lucky to have had her as a member of our family since day one! We know she’ll be an amazing Minister of Industry, Science and Technology for Australia one day Before girls takeover parliament program I never considered myself to possess the qualities of a leader. I originally signed up for the program because I realised I didn't have a proper understanding of what a politians job was. I also realised I didn't have a fe...male leadership role model that I looked up to. At the time I was dissapointed in myself that I didn't know more and I wanted to fix that situation so I signed up. To this day it's one of my proudest decisions I've ever made. GTP has educated me about how our currently political system works, provided me with resources and workshops to not only learn more but actually nurture and develop my leadership skills. The program introduced me to a supportive and inspiring collection of young women that I was able to have stimulating conversations with about our shared experiences. After being introduced to a wonderful community of strong women and actually experiencing a polticans job I can now proudly say I view myself as a leader. One day I have plans of even running for office. GTP has changed me for the better and I wouldn't be the strong woman I am today. I strongly believe it's important for the young people out there who would like to create change is that it's once you shift your perspective from one of 'I'm not qualified or ready to pursue that' to one of 'I want to do that and I'll learn through experience' you'll become unstoppable. #YouthDay #womeninstem #womeninpolitics #humansofjasiri #fashionista #GirlsTakeoverParliament

09.01.2022 Congratulations to our Trailblazer Fellow, Cat Yeong for winning her university election! We know you’ll be an incredible voice for ANU undergraduate students

[stars] [sprout] Adriana Boisen for Kurrajong is running on a platform dedicated to housing for all, increased job security and building a better future for our communities and the planet. We... can't wait to see her push our democracy towards an increased focus on community and climate action, and serve as an inspiration to every young woman who wants to make a difference in their community. Congratulations Adriana - we'll be cheering you on all the way to the Legislative Assembly! [explosion] [party emoji]

08.01.2022 I’m Australia, we recognise the 13th anniversary of the national apology to the Stolen Generations. Our friends from Common Ground have gathered this great resource to explain the importance of this day. The pathway towards reconciliation did not end with the national apology. To this day, thousands of First Nations children have been taken away from their homes and communities at alarming rates. As a nation, we must recognise that reconciliation is not achieved through words, but consistent actions. If you have a moment, please read through Common Grounds post and also follow them on social media and support their work.

08.01.2022 Looking back at old sessions of #GirlsTakeoverParliament - whose office would you take over if you could? What's your #GTP dream?

08.01.2022 Congratulations to alumni Krishna Shukla who was awarded a Highly Commended award at the Young citizen of the year awards: category - Individial community service. We are very proud

07.01.2022 After working with over 100 politicians in three countries and taking over 300 young women into parliament, two constant questions we receive from both sides of the aisle is: - How can we bring more young voices into policy? - How can we create spaces for policymakers, political leaders and young people to work together? Our solution: The Australian Policy Design Hub Head to our website to find out more information and join the Hub today ... #AustralianPolicyDesignHub #APDH #GirlsTakeoverParliament

07.01.2022 Next up, Aoibhinn! She is an incredible climate activists making waves and building movements within her city Being able to go into Parliament House and work with an MP for a day was an insightful and interesting experience into what being a politician actually entails. Having that sense of mystery removed makes me feel more confident and certain in my ability to enter into a career in politics. ... My experience with Jasiri has also helped me bring a new frame and understanding to my work in fighting for climate justice. Young people today face enormous challenges and extremely uncertain futures, but we have trust in our abilities to overcome these challenges, and so I think it’s time adults have a little more faith in us and themselves too. #InternationalYouthDay #YouthforGlobalAction #HumansofJasiri #CourageGeneration

07.01.2022 #HerStory #RepresentationMatters Welcome to the Senate, Senator Linda Thorpe! Linda is the first Aboriginal Victorian Senator. Ready about this powerfully captured moment in her own words: ... My fist was raised as I entered the Senate chamber as an expression of my people’s strength, resilience and survival and a symbol of solidarity with all the families of Aboriginal people who have died in custody. Today I brought a message to Parliament. I carried with me a message stick bearing a single mark for each of the 441 First Nations people who have died in custody since the Royal Commission in 1991. I am determined to work hard for justice in this place, every day. Now it’s time to get started - I’ll be fighting for strong action on the climate crisis, to tackle the economic inequality in this system that is leaving more and more people behind and for a Treaty, so we can finally have justice for Aboriginal people in this country, and move forward together as a stronger Nation. Senator, we wish you all the best and we cannot wait to see more young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women follow one your footsteps

06.01.2022 Congratulations to South Australia’s newest Member of Parliament! Ensuring our parliaments reflect the Australian community is our goal. It’s not just about unlocking pathways for women, but for all BIPOC people and those from diverse backgrounds. When we look across the aisles and we see the faces of our friends, families and neighbours, that’s when we know our democracy is strong. I had to look at it as representation and to inspire the other young women like me that came... here with nothing to work extra hard to be here like me. We know that trailblazer Ayor Makur Chuot will definitely inspire others to be able to make change- visibility and representation matters. #StrongerTogether

Break new ground, create a new path in which others can follow, to help humanity. Feeling #Fearless ! https://www.macinleybutson.com Macinley Butson - 2018 NSW Young Australian of the Year

06.01.2022 You all recognise Caitlin’s face, but what you don’t know is that she’s been an integral and fierce supporter of ours since she became a #GirlsTakeoverParliament Delegate in 2019. Honestly, there’s some things we couldn’t have achieved in the last eight months without her. Thank you for being a voice for young Indigenous women to enter parliament Caitlin!! We cannot wait until you’re our Minister for Indigenous Australians Girls takeover parliament has shown me that any...one regardless of age, economic status, gender and race can and should lead. For so long politics has been a game only played by rich, white men and it’s time that changes. The GTP program showed me that it is possible for women like me to be in positions of power and join politics. I’ve never been incredibly academic and always been an average student but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for me in Parliament House. After a few years in the field of community service I am hoping to join the big leagues of Federal government. My dream is to follow in the footsteps of Uncle Ken Wyatt and be a proud Aboriginal leading Aboriginal politics. I truly believe that all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Youth and be a part of politics. We need more First Nations people running our country just like we did pre-colonisation. For our people to heal we need to run the country. Sovereignty never ceded. #alwayswasalwayswillbe #YouthDay #Womeninpolitics #FuturePolitician #DiversityInParliament

05.01.2022 When we expect to see the uniform of politics as grey suits, women lash out in colours. The Honourable Julie Bishop marches in red stilettos. Mehreen Faruqi begins a new era in her Salwar Kameez. At the presidential inauguration, Kamala Harris stands proud in a purple suit. Red for passion and power. Suffragette purple for when women found our voices and did not simply speak but shouted. Women use colours to celebrate femininity, change and diversity, to be a beacon to young ...girls everywhere. They colour our political landscape, but the physical landscape silences them. We must carve out space for female power and build it in the materials of immortality; stone and bronze and marble. The Fearless Girl statue in Melbourne is an icon of female empowerment and potential. She is the power incarnate in every little girl. Canberra needs statues of her all grown up. Canberra needs a pair of red heels in the flood of grey suits. The Fearless Girl becomes the first women who founded Suffragette Societies, the first women elected to parliament, the first women to stand in federal elections. These are the women who coloured the political world with power, strength, passion, fierceness, determination, creativity, compassion and courage. Their statues will commemorate what we have done and what we will do icons for every fearless girl to aspire to. 05.01.2022 Amazing work Georgia! So cool to see young women being published

04.01.2022 #FearlessFriday is all about celebrating incredible youth, and challenging the stigma that age is a barrier to achieving incredible things. One woman who has shown us that is Varsha Yajman. Varsha is one of the lead organisers of the School Strike 4 Climate movement, the 2019 NSW schools coordinator for the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, and a first-year university student. At 17 years old, she is a powerful force of change in the fight to climate justice and certainly a name to be watching! We love witnessing the power of youth in advocating for change and actively shaping the world! Photo: Sydney Morning Herald

04.01.2022 No active covid cases, year-round sun and another majority-women cabinet! The Northern Territory is doing amazingly, and the recent announcement that six of its nine cabinet members are female is wonderful news

03.01.2022 Over the course of Jasiri's Australia India Girls Takeover Parliament virtual bilateral policy summit, young women from both Australia and India will be equipped with the skills they need to engage critically and effectively in politics, policymaking and diplomacy. We're so excited to find the next generation of political and policy changemakers, and we can't wait to get started on building a better Australia and India! -- ... 03.01.2022 Did you hear that Parliament just launched a new cross-party parliamentary group to address ending violence against women in Australia. Our very own Matron of #GirlsTakeoverParliament, Natasha Stott Despoja AO and Chair of Our Watch launched the group Addressing violence against women needs to be a national priority. With domestic violence skyrocketing during COVID-19, policies furthering systemic inequality and every week a woman dies from violence, as a nation, we have to say enough is enough.

03.01.2022 Fun fact, Lauren is an Advisor to our Ambassador @elizabethleecanberra Thanks for sharing your Girls Takeover Parliament experience with us: "I’m immensely thankful for the opportunities that were afforded to me as a result of the Jasiri ‘Girls Takeover Parliament’ program. The activities involved in the initiative gave me an inside look into how politics is conducted in real time. In doing so, it fostered a connection between myself and politics, and helped to produce not... only in myself, but the whole cohort, a sense of civic engagement. In essence, the program works as an educational launch pad for enthusiastic young women who wish to make a difference. The program had positive impacts extending beyond its mandate as well. In addition to being an educational launch pad, it can also serve as a professional launch pad. After my experience working in the ACT Legislative Assembly throughout the program, I was then offered a position to work for Elizabeth Lee MLA. Consequently, the Girls Takeover Parliament program has been invaluable as it builds connections between young women and mentors. This open up many doors it essentially paved the way for me to grow professionally, and as a leader. Young people are the future, and positive change happens when we have young women who believe in themselves. As such, the Girls Takeover Parliament program is an incredible initiative that not only gives young girls and young women the tools to enact change, but instils the personal belief that they are capable of doing so" #YouthDay #WomeninPolitics #HumansofJasiri #InternationalYouthDay #CourageGeneration

02.01.2022 After a rough 2020, Jasiri's Australian Policy Design Hub is excited to launch our new Australia India Girls Takeover Parliament program, in partnership with Australia India Youth Dialogue and the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade ! As leaders start developing policy to manage a post-COVID-19 world, Jasiri is bringing the voices of young women into the conversation. --... [CLOSED CAPTIONS: (Montage of former Jasiri Australia Participants.) 2020 was a TOUGH year for everyone around the world. (Montage of coronavirus news footage.) As the world came to a halt, the circumstances of many continued to worsen. 2020 was a year where many hidden diseases of the world were brought to the forefront, and everyone everywhere felt the impacts. But it was especially difficult for WOC and other marginalised communities. This is why we’re so excited to launch our new Australia India Girls Takeover Parliament program with support from the Australia India Youth Dialogue and the Department of Foreign Affairs. What is the Australia India Girls Takeover Parliament program? The Australia India Girls Takeover Parliament (AIGTP) program is a virtual bilateral policy training summit for 60 young women, that’s centred on breaking down the barriers to youth participation in the processes of policymaking, politics and diplomatic relations. Why now? Because we’re at a crossroads. COVID has changed the world we’re living in. And as our global community begins planning for the COVID-19 recovery, we have the chance to change with it. We have the chance to not only address the present issues, but to also heal the wounds and remedy the diseases that have plagued our global community for centuries. We’re at a point where we can bring the voices of those most affected by the pandemic into the spaces where they can make the most change for the future. We can ensure that as our world changes, our leaders change as well. And so do our solutions. Jasiri Australia is a youth led organisation on a mission to unleash a courageous generation of young women and girls. Our goal is to change the face of political leadership and policymaking, with the vision of making democracies everywhere inclusive of, accountable to and accessible for all young women. By training young women in the policy sphere, we bring domestic and international politics to young people and allow them to use their voices directly. Kamala Harris: But while I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last. Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities. Our hope is to create spaces for young women to engage in politics and policymaking and identify our two nations’ next generation of leaders. Stay tuned to hear more about our Australia India Girls Takeover Parliament program. Tag your friends and follow Jasiri Australia on Facebook and Instagram.]

02.01.2022 Tonight’s #TBT inspiration comes from Katherine Switzer, who has long been one of runnings most iconic figures. Not just for breaking barriers as the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon in 1967, but also for creating positive global social change. Because of her millions of women are now empowered by the simple act of running

02.01.2022 Congratulations to Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for making history upon her confirmation as director-general of the World Trade Organization. Her appointment paves a new pathway within the WTO, becoming the first woman and the first African to lead the global trade body.

02.01.2022 Happy International Day of Democracy Today's a very important day for Jasiri as we use this day to reflect on where we've been and where we're going on our mission to make 'democracies everywhere inclusive of, accountable to and accessible for all young women'. And while we can't run our annual #GirlsTakeoverParliament incubators this year because of COVID. It doesn't mean we've stopped working to achieve our goal.
