24.01.2022 The HSBC Pavilion is a professional golf tournament held annually in Sheshan, near Shanghai in China. Each year an international competition is held to design a new hospitality pavilion that provides a venue to entertain guests and watch the play. This year, JAWS Architects joined with a local builder to submit a design-construct competition entry for the pavilion.... Building on our experience with modular and transportable buildings, our design offers a simple, elegant and flexible structure. Rather than be discarded at the end of the tournament, we proposed a temporary installation which can be re-used a number of times. This has the benefit of reducing ground disturbance, minimizing wastage and allows for a high level of quality through manufacture in the factory. The design promotes natural timber, offset by a simple colour palette, with a high level of glazing maximizing views to the golf course. Our design was selected in the final three entries, with the winner decided in mid-July. #jawsarchitects #architecturecompetition #HSBC #modularconstruction #pavilion

13.01.2022 Kingston Beach is a highly utilised recreational space for the Kingborough municipality, especially popular during the warmer summer months. The beach is home to the Kingston Beach Surf Life Saving Club and a focus for many water-based events and community activities. JAWS Architects was engaged by Kingborough Council to prepare a Master Plan to guide redevelopment of a site adjacent to the beach, containing a decrepit toilet block which needed replacing. The commission not o...nly included the design and documentation of new all-access toilets, showers and changeroom facilities, but to also facilitate co-location of storage and support facilities for the Surf Club to assist with their beach patrol service. The buildings are straight-forward and robust, sitting on a plinth and pushed to the southern boundary to provide an active, open and sunny forecourt, with hand basins and showers placed under a timber shade structure. Pedestrian and vehicle movements are separated, with bicycle racks available for both public and surf club use. A pre-cast concrete base provides a continuous datum, with open timber slats providing security and allowing natural light and ventilation above the cubicles.
