25.01.2022 Jawun creates connections across the Indigenous, corporate and government sectors of our society. Each connection carries a form of two-way learning and knowledge sharing that our Indigenous partners in central Australia call ngapartji ngapartji. Or reciprocity. It’s a practical, powerful and human form of reconciliation. Today, as we celebrate NAIDOC week, we proudly share the perspectives of two of our strongest supporters. One, the visionary reform thinker Noel Pearson, wh...o called on corporate Australia to lend its brilliant people to Indigenous organisations almost 20 years ago. The other, Brian Hartzer, CEO of one of the very first organisations to respond with ‘secondees’ who bring to life Indigenous-led ideas for change. Both see the two-way power of the Jawun model that today connects over 30 corporate and government partners with over 70 Indigenous organisations in 10 regions. #NAIDOC2019

24.01.2022 2020 marks the 20th anniversary of Jawun. This is a significant milestone not only for Jawun, but our Indigenous, corporate and government partners, in particular those that had the courage & vision that began the Jawun story Cape York Regional Organisations, BCG in Australia and New Zealand & Westpac. Allow us to share with you the Story of Jawun. #20YearsJawun ... 24.01.2022 The Kimberley Land Council (KLC) empowers Aboriginal communities throughout the Kimberley with access to opportunities. Through vision and determination, it established the right to practice customary fire management on native title lands, driving stronger cultural and economic outcomes for communities as well as bringing benefits to the natural environment. Since 2012, Jawun has facilitated around 100 secondments to KLC to support its priorities, including on country fire ma...nagement practices and related economic enterprises. As Tyronne Garstone, Deputy CEO, puts it, secondees’ expertise and work has been critical as we’ve sought to create sustainable economies on our country and find a place for those in the market and policy context. And we also see the two-way learning benefit of having secondees they are a conduit for social change. Have a read of this fantastic story https://jawun.org.au//fire-management-and-the-jawun-cycle/

24.01.2022 Ngunnawal / Wiradjuri woman Corinne Hodson has been supporting the Central Coast Aboriginal community on Darkinjung country for 8 years. She is currently delivering some ground breaking work and collaborating across various sectors with the Barang Regional Alliance to deliver on the priorities of the region. In 2019 she joined Jawun’s Emerging Leaders program, where she had the opportunity to utilise and increase her skills to further her impact both locally and across regio...ns. Speaking of the value of the Emerging Leaders program, Corinne says I think it is really important to build networks and to share resources and experience. I would use this as an opportunity to learn about what is happening in other regions, find out about solutions to similar issues, and also develop partnerships. Have a read of her journey and passion for supporting her community. https://jawun.org.au//corinne-hodson-collaboration-in-pra/

24.01.2022 In the lead up to Jawun's 20th year, we acknowledge our founding partners. Westpac has been a strong and dedicated partner, having sent over 900 secondees to Indigenous organisations across Australia. To recognise this incredible achievement, we share one Westpac secondee's story about their experience supporting Alice Springs-based health service offering renal dialysis to people from remote communities, The Purple House. https://www.westpac.com.au//life-changing-jawuns-purple-/

24.01.2022 Given the current situation we are facing together in Australia and throughout the world, we know this must be a difficult and uncertain time for many people. We thank everyone who has supported and continues to support Jawun, whether as a partner, a secondee, an executive visit participant, or otherwise. Together, we have achieved some great outcomes, and we and our Indigenous partners greatly appreciate your ongoing commitment to the empowerment of Indigenous Australians. J...awun has always been a model of human connection and strong relationships, and in these uncertain times, it is important to focus on these connections, and the successes we have been able to achieve as a result of them. Click below on our infographic to see some of the highlights of our partnerships from the July-December 2019 period, which features key results across secondments, executive visits, leadership programs, as well as the latest case studies. We wish everyone well during this challenging time, and will continue to keep connected with you all. https://jawun.org.au/outcomes/

23.01.2022 Today we take a moment to honour the late Mr Ronnie Harrigan, the man who gifted us our name Jawun. Today would have been his 70th Birthday and if he was with us there would be a big celebration in his honour to celebrate this milestone. There would be plenty of guitar playing, songs, laughter and good cheer. We can’t be all together today but we can surely enjoy this beautiful reminder of the gift that Ronnie shared with us. To all our Jawun wherever you are across the country we hope that this makes you feel connected to each other. Happy 70th Ronnie Harrigan forever our Jawun. https://vimeo.com/101835781

23.01.2022 Today marks 250 years since the HM Bark Endeavour sailed into Kamay (Botany Bay). We share with you a message from the Gujaga Foundation to mark this significant occasion, and the impact it has had on the La Perouse Community. We encourage you to take the time to read, reflect, and share. https://www.gujaga.org.au/messages

23.01.2022 In our current environment, health services are playing a vital role in supporting communities across the country. Yerin Aboriginal Health Service in the Central Coast continues to back their community by adapting to meet the growing needs for services that speak directly back to the uniqueness of their region. As Belinda Field, CEO puts it, the work of their organisation stems from a sense of community obligation and loyalty, something that is "so much more than a job". https://jawun.org.au//in-pursuit-of-the-possible-how-yeri/

20.01.2022 Our final case study in our latest series highlights the power of Jawun's Stories of Female Leadership Network (SOFL) and the strong connections that are formed. For Fiona Djerrkura from Miwatj Health Aboriginal Corporation in Arnhem Land, a natural connection was found with fellow SOFL member, Suzi Hullick of Westpac. After a three-day SOFL convention in the East Kimberley in 2018, the pair saw an opportunity for two-way learning and Suzi invited Fiona to join her in her wo...rk environment in Westpac's Darwin office. Fiona shadowed Suzi over two-days and they both gained an enormous amount from the experience. Later, Suzi will spend two days with Fiona in Arnhem Land and at Miwatj Health. These meaningful two-way connections would not be possible without the commitment and willingness of the individuals to learn and develop their leadership. It would also have not been possible without Jawun's long-term and founding partner, Westpac - not only has Westpac supported indigenous-led capacity building with over 900 Jawun secondees, but has also been a strong partner of Jawun's leadership programs including piloting our 'reverse secondment.' 19.01.2022 2020 marked 5 years since the beginning of our incredible Stories of Female Leadership (SoFL) initiative, which began with the question, ‘How can Jawun foster Indigenous female leadership through collaboration with our diverse and unique network of corporate, government, academic and philanthropic partners?’. Despite the challenges faced as a result of COVID-19 in 2020, our SoFL network went above and beyond to stay connected and support one another from a distance. We cannot wait for the opportunities of the year ahead, to reconnect in person and continue supporting this powerful movement. Read more about the stories of female leadership and continuation of connection, strength, and resilience amongst our inspirational SoFL members here: https://bit.ly/3vYxqDm

18.01.2022 The La Perouse Alliance drawn from ‘opt-in’ community organisations is built on the concept that collaboration best supports community aspirations. Their vision is one of Indigenous-led empowerment. This #NAIDOC week is all about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country. We stand proudly beside La Perouse Aboriginal community and the rest of our 70+ Indigenous partners as they share what the theme #alwayswasalwayswillbe means t...o them, this week and year round. The La Perouse Aboriginal community adopted First Priority Agreements (FPAs) for improving community health, education, culture and identity, housing, infrastructure, and wealth. In doing so, they have prioritised the expansion of the Gujaga Childhood Centre, feasibility analysis to establish a community aged care facility, and refurbishment of the local mission church as a healing centre. Please take a moment to read over the inspiring reform journey of the La Perouse Aboriginal community in our recent case study: https://jawun.org.au//the-reform-journey-of-the-la-perou/ #Jawun #lapamob

16.01.2022 Our partner Kuti Co from the Ngarrindjeri Nation in South Australia has been on an exciting journey to the launch of their own enterprise, a unique pipi harvesting business which provides significant benefits to their community. The Ngarrindjeri people have been harvesting pipis (or ‘kutis’ in Ngarrindjeri) in the region for over 10,000 years, and it is fantastic to see the ongoing development of their ventures. Jawun has worked alongside the Ngarrindjeri Nation in the Lower... River Murray Region of South Australia since 2015, and have delivered over 100 six-week secondments to support Ngarrindjeri-led priorities. 15.01.2022 Binarri-binyja yarrawoo (BBY) is the Empowered Communities 'backbone' organisation in the East Kimberley working with inputs from over 20 Indigenous organisations in the region to implement reform priorities including employment rates, housing, education, a Kimberley-wide alcohol management strategy, and most recently a Joint Decision Making framework. 14.01.2022 Exciting news from the Far West Coast, Jawun’s partner region in South Australia! The Aboriginal Communities of the Far West Coast - around 1000 people in Ceduna and surrounds - have joined Empowered Communities. Jawun is incredibly excited to hear about this partnership, and the expansion of an initiative that drives regional reform directly through the voice of the community. Empowered Communities was established by Indigenous leaders in eight regions from Cape York in far ...north Queensland to Inner Sydney to the West Kimberley of far north Western Australia seven years ago. Since it was established, it has been supported by nearly 300 Jawun secondees. In a video conference with Ken Wyatt, Minister for Indigenous Australians yesterday, Ceduna leaders told Mr Wyatt they wanted to develop tourism. They believe they can create jobs and support local business by attracting visitors to Ceduna and surrounds once pandemic travel restrictions are lifted. The best outcomes are achieved when Indigenous Australians are at the centre of decision making and we are committed to supporting greater indigenous ownership and true partnerships with government, Mr Wyatt said. Chair of the Far West Aboriginal community Leaders Group, Corey McLennan, said Today is another step forward for Aboriginal communities of the Far West Coast in shaping and leading decisions that affect the lives of our people. We are proud to be embraced and to become the ninth region of Empowered Communities, we also look forward to continuously working closely with our local health and native title organisations to create real and genuine change for the betterment of our people. Our seat at the table will ensure our people and our region is at the heart of decision making. #jawun #empoweredcommunities #reform https://www.theaustralian.com.au//d9e9ee04c0f60944c8882fe1

13.01.2022 In these difficult times it's important to focus on our successes, our connections, and our future. In 2019, Jawun saw a fantastic cohort of eight Indigenous community members across six regions come together to participate in the Emerging Leaders Program, 'How enterprise and economic development is leading to empowerment'. Over the course of the year, the group had the opportunity to build experience, capacity, and long-lasting connections. As Amara Barnes (Head of Tourism, Tribal Warrior Aboriginal Corporation) puts it, 'I hope that together we can lead positive social outcomes and intergenerational change on a national scale'. https://jawun.org.au//emerging-leaders-2019-how-enterpris/

12.01.2022 Our partner in Central Australia, NPY Empowered Communities, is a partnership of regional Aboriginal controlled organisations seeking to improve the opportunities and outcomes for individuals, families and communities, with community input and ownership being the founding principle of the organisation. They’ve been working hard to deliver on their first priorities, including creating meaningful job opportunities, providing accessible education, improving housing, and empoweri...ng the community to participate in and drive outcomes at the local and regional level. Since 2013, 30 Jawun secondees have supported the vision of NPY Empowered Communities to progress Indigenous-led development in the region. Applying their skills they have supported the community-led visions of empowerment to be realised. As Chris Reid, regional Emerging Leader and Chair of the Community Council in Irrunytju says, As communities we need to have an input, we need ideas coming from us We just want to have our say, to be empowered, to achieve things in life. Have a read of their story below https://jawun.org.au//growing-strong-roots-empowered-comm/

11.01.2022 Constitutional recognition will make this nation whole. In the words of Noel Pearson: "We are engaged in a phase that represents our best chance to achieve recognition sought by our old people. Australia doesn’t make sense without recognition. Australia is incomplete without recognition. How could there be an Australia without its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Indigenous peoples? As long as its Indigenous peoples remain unrecognised then Australia is an absurdity. A nation missing its most vital heart." We encourage you to take the time to read through an inspiring speech Noel delivered to The National Museum of Australia on Wednesday night, accessible at the link below.

11.01.2022 For many of us, the past few months have brought unexpected challenges, and we know this continues to be an uncertain time. We thank everyone who has supported Jawun’s ongoing commitment to the empowerment of Indigenous Australians. Together, we achieved some great outcomes in FY20. We share some of the year’s highlights in the link below, which features key results across secondments, executive visits, leadership programs, as well as the latest case studies.... https://jawun.org.au/outcomes/

10.01.2022 Jawun’s Stories of Female Leadership Network connects influential, inspiring and courageous Indigenous, corporate, and government female leaders to drive change. In 2019, we ran our inaugural Malparara (Pitjantjatjara concept for ‘working hand in hand’) Leadership program. This saw network members from diverse backgrounds come together with the aim to increase their ability to understand their strengths, build authentic pathways for success, and deepen meaningful relationshi...ps with their self and others. 09.01.2022 The Kimberley Agriculture and Pastoral Company (KAPCO), established by KRED Enterprises, is revitalising the long history of Indigenous involvement in the Kimberley’s pastoral industry. With the support of over 10 Jawun secondees, KAPCO is now the largest single Aboriginal pastoral business in the region with four Indigenous-owned stations, totalling over 700,000 hectares. Take some time to read this story, the first in our latest case study series and a great example of the Jawun model to build the capacity of Indigenous organisations to achieve their own development goals. https://jawun.org.au//kapco-kimberley-pastoral-enterprise/

08.01.2022 This National Reconciliation Week, we celebrate the strong relationships that have been formed by our partners, which have created opportunities for genuine shared value to transpire between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Since 2016, Jawun partner The University of Melbourne has forged a lasting connection with our Indigenous partner organisations across the Goulburn Murray, Central Australia, Lower River Murray and Far West Coast regions, who have hosted over 20 ...secondees from the University to date. In collaboration with the Ceduna community in the Far West Coast, they have designed an innovative new arts and language centre for the Ceduna Aboriginal Corporation, and a health centre for the Ceduna Koonibba Aboriginal Health Service Aboriginal Corporation As Wayne Miller, CEO Ceduna Aboriginal Corporation says, The partnership has enabled us to broaden our vision of what could be possible for our arts, language and cultural centre The students have been really receptive and open to listening, with real consideration and respect to culture and community." https://jawun.org.au//designing-a-partnership-the-univers/

04.01.2022 This Indigenous Business Month we share with you a recent case study on Bama Services. The Indigenous-owned civil engineering and construction business who, through the Jawun partnership, has collaborated with Downer to win a number of major contracts to deliver infrastructure for the Peninsula Development Road in Cape York. 04.01.2022 The theme of this year’s National Close the Gap Day is ‘Leadership and Legacy Through Crises: Keeping Our Mob Safe’. We ask you to reflect with us on the phenomenal leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, youth, and organisations throughout critical health crises in 2020, as we acknowledge and recognise the work of the health and wellbeing organisations in our network. Supported by Jawun's pivot to a virtual model in 2020, four Aboriginal hea...lth and wellbeing organisations - Moorundi ACCHS, Yerin Incorporating Eleanor Duncan Aboriginal Health Centre, Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-Operative, and NPY Women's Council, collaborated cross-regionally on a combined project brief. The brief which covered multiple regions across the country generated valuable intelligence on key requirements for data dashboards and the benefits of these tools to health service providers delivering community programs and services. Ultimately, dashboards have the ability to fast-track reporting activities by making report-ready visualisations of real time information available immediately, but more importantly they create efficiencies that allow organisations to focus not on business administration but on what really matters: their clients and community. Read more about this fantastic story in our case study, celebrating the importance of investing in Indigenous-led projects for improving health and wellbeing outcomes: http://bit.ly/30VDNJh

03.01.2022 For many of us, the past few months have continued to bring unexpected challenges. Together, we achieved some great outcomes from July - December 2020. We share some of the year’s highlights in the link below, which features key results across secondments, executive visits, leadership programs, as well as th...e latest case studies. https://bit.ly/3c0nmAt

02.01.2022 Last week, Jawun marked an extraordinary milestone: Over 1,000 Senior Leaders and Executives have been part of a Jawun Executive Visit. Jawun Executive Visits see leaders from corporate, government and philanthropic organisations visit an Indigenous community to meet local leaders and witness Indigenous-led change in place. ... These visits are an opportunity for Indigenous & non-Indigenous leaders and organisations to develop their networks and business opportunities. They spark relationships that can have significant positive impact and strengthen the conditions for Indigenous empowerment. At the 2019 Executive Visit to Inner Sydney, we asked some of the leaders what the visit has meant for them: https://vimeo.com/374313642

02.01.2022 Last month, our 2019 Emerging Leaders were hosted by the indigenous.gov.au National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) and the Department of Finance for a three-day Government Masterclass. Along with a number of workshops on what government does and how policy is developed, the group had the incredible opportunity to meet with a number of Indigenous Ministers of Parliament and senior government executives including Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt, Sha...dow Minsters for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Linda Burney, and Patrick Dodson. They were able to learn about their leadership journeys and the importance of networks and how to work with others to coordinate and facilitate change. In line with the program theme 'how enterprise and economic development is leading to empowerment', the group also heard from Canberra-based Indigenous entrepreneurs including Tyronne Bell from Thunderstone Tours and Dion Devow of Darkies Designs. A big thanks to NIAA and the Department of Finance for an inspiring week!

02.01.2022 Our latest #collaboration case study features two Aboriginal health services in the Lower River Murray and Far West Coast regions of South Australia, Moorundi ACCHS and Ceduna Koonibba Aboriginal Health Service Aboriginal Corporation, and how they collaborated to adopt a new digital tool, Microsoft Power BI. A series of Jawun secondees worked consecutively to define significant and long-term solutions for improving the capacity of the health services, with one secondee from B...endigo Bank helping to customise and implement Microsoft Power BI dashboards with both health services, travelling between the regions to support the collaboration with the new tool. The dashboards will each serve as a ‘Nerve Centre’ for the organisations to view critical metrics, identify key trends, raise questions, and inform new management strategies, allowing Moorundi and CKAHSAC to focus on what really matters; their clients and community. https://jawun.org.au//south-australia-sharing-digital-too/
