25.01.2022 The key difference between a little business and a big business? Strategy.... Think about it: Start small > Think small > Small strategies > Small business. If your goal is to become a big business (and let’s take a moment to recognize that’s NOT everyone’s goal) then your first step is to start thinking BIG. What do big businesses do differently? 1: Segment their market - instead of serving one audience, they serve 3, 4, or more. 2: Leverage partnerships - if you’re doing all of your lead generation yourself, you’re missing out. 3: Systemize their processes - no business process should be memorized. Document. Everything. 4: Acquire to grow - why try to grow from scratch when you can strategically grow alongside an established business? 5: Lead the industry - leaders don’t just talk the talk; they take risks necessary to grow. Are you playing it safe in your small business? What’s number 6 on this list? Follow #biglittlebusiness for more big strategies to apply to your little business.

25.01.2022 How are you going? What are the major issues and opportunities for your Small Business right now? the end of job keeper? access to funding? funding staff?... border closures? local economy? As Chair of the Small Business Advisory Committee to Federal Member Phillip Thompson OAM MP, I have the opportunity to raise your concerns on a federal level at our meeting tomorrow, along with Kate Herron, Michael Brennan, Ross McLennan, Renee Bennett It’s been a very tough gig for most small businesses this year! This is your opportunity have your voice and to have your concerns raised, comment below or message me I’d love to hear your views.

23.01.2022 Change is sometimes thrust upon us - But don't be fooled. Change is not always growth. Certainly, change can INSPIRE growth -... But there's one key component that separates them. Intention. Growth is a choice and growth is intentional . It's HOW you adapt. In order to transform positively from inevitable change? You must grow, not just ‘cope’. In order to scale your business, develop your relationships, and become a better leader, you must choose growth. Or you can choose to just get by, to ‘cope’ - and plateau. It’s not always easy to grow, but it can be done. And it starts with intention. Agreed?

22.01.2022 I am an accidental business owner. There was no grand plan, no great vision. I didn't have an unyielding epiphany that needed to be fulfilled, nor the next best idea for business.... Most business owners tell me: "I'm not like most people. I went into business because I was passionate enough to risk it all - not because I wanted to make money!" Want to know the truth? That's every small business owner. They're ALL driven by passion. Because they've got nothing else. Of course you aren't in it solely for the money Many businesses don't make a profit within their first year. Who wouldn't pay themselves for an entire year if not for passion? Here's the thing: Most businesses have humble beginnings. You're no different than the next if that's your story. To differentiate yourself, understand your end game. Pull apart where you want to be Not where you are. Because if you don't know where you're heading... You won't like where you'll end up. Just ask the 20% of businesses that fail in Y1. Follow #biglittlebusiness for more big strategies to apply to your small business.

22.01.2022 We’ve heard good things about your coffee! If you have not been to Kell's Kitchen and Brew Bar on Charters Towers Road, check them out! They have great coffee and a great story. They were badly impacted by the Townsville Floods and then again of course with COVID-19. Kelly is very community minded offering a safe space for flood affected residents and regular support meetings. ... Its fantastic to see the recognition from the V8’s! Pop in and support a local business.

22.01.2022 'How can we expect the unexpected? History and global trends give us strong clues.'* I must have been a Scout in a former life as I live by the motto 'Be Prepared'! It has held me in good stead throughout the roller-coaster ride of life and of business and I spend a great deal of time now coaching business owners to build resilience and to risk manage their businesses. This has been extremely helpful in 2020! Planning is the key, but it begins with reflection on the past and ...blue sky thinking about the future. For 2021, I have the Life Designer work & life planner from Hayley Golledge at Bloomprint Life Design. It provides great structure for reflection and forward-thinking, in a beautiful and engaging format. Whatever tool you use, I encourage you to spend time reflecting on 2020 and forward planning for 2021. *Ch 9: Roller-coaster Junkie #biglittlebusiness #beprepared #businessowners #growth #consulting #resilience

22.01.2022 When I started my first business, I knew I needed guidance. The problem? Mentoring was unheard of. Certainly for small businesses. And grants simply weren’t available.... You were very much on your own. This didn’t stop me. First, I started by sharing knowledge with wise friends. Then, my search grew into books. I read over 100 books in one year. I read everything about business I could get my hands on. But my thirst for knowledge never stopped. As my business grew - my needs did, too. The solution I found was simple: I’d ask people I admired (but had never met) if I could buy them a coffee. Nearly every time they said yes. Nearly every time they’d give me some piece of invaluable knowledge. I learned a valuable lesson in this practice. The key to learning how to build a business isn’t just consuming the knowledge. It’s building the relationships that’ll grow with you. Agree? #consulting #businesscoach #smallbusiness #sme #growth

19.01.2022 We live in a fast paced world - the distractions are constant and the demands can be too! Its well understood that disconnecting from work and allowing your body and brain to recharge is important for physical and mental health. The ‘right to disconnect’ after hours should be a given in workplaces. Understanding there are at times situations that might require after hours connectivity - this should be the exception rather than the rule! The ‘always on/always connected’ cult...ure is part of life now and not just a work connection. As a society we are yet to learn how to manage our connectivity and balance being ‘on’ with digital disconnection and rest and relaxation. Do you struggle to disconnect?

19.01.2022 Gosh, it’s been a huge week! I released Big Little Business with a book signing at Mary Who? Bookshop, had a huge official launch at Townsville Turf Club, had restock books at Mary Who? twice in one week as they keep selling out! Have books at Botanical Style and had to restock there as they also sold out! And also have books now at First Things First Wellness Centre and Phoenix Podiatry Centre! The response has been fabulous, thanks to everyone who has purchased copies for... themselves and for gifts - enjoy the read! Books (including the eBook) are also available from my website https://jaynearlett.com.au

18.01.2022 Necessity is the mother of invention! It’s hard to find a silver lining in the midst of a global pandemic but the forced creativity and innovation in business, communication, manufacturing and industry in general will leave a positive and lasting legacy. We have fast tracked our digital capabilities and capacity by 3-5 years in just a few short (or not so short) months!... Things that we thought were impossible to achieve in such a short time frame have magically happened: teaching online (schools, Universities, any number of other education platforms) work from home capabilities and learning to manage remote teams and their work outputs the rapid acceptance and growth of online shopping - if you don’t have an online offering now - get one! This has not been without a lot of blood sweat and tears on the back end of course. But COVID-19 has certainly shown us what we CAN achieve when we have to.

18.01.2022 Well, 2020 has been a BIG year in so many respects! For many business owners, it’s been very difficult with business closures, financial difficulties, staffing issues - and great uncertainty about the future. I have worked with clients through these difficulties - reconnecting with their business values & purpose, providing structure, pivoting & adapting, focusing on what we CAN do & putting action plans in place to achieve our new business goals has been helpful. Throughout ...this very busy year at the prompting from my business coaching clients, I made the time to write my first book, Big Little Business. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this book, my clients as relatable examples of the issues in business & how to manage them & my family and friends in supporting my authoring journey. The response has been phenomenal, many have already read the book & I know there will be literally hundreds of copies of Big Little Business under Christmas trees this year! I’d love to hear what you think once you have had a read & I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a fabulous start to 2021! For those who already have their copy of the book, make sure to also join our Facebook group 'Big Little Business Owners' which will be kicking off in full force in the new year. Join here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/biglittlebusiness

17.01.2022 Networking is a dirty word - for some. I blame the 90s. In the 90s, networking looked like this:... Show up to a conference room with a stack of business cards. Relentlessly swap cards with others. Give a card. Get a card. Shake a hand. Onto the next. Repeat 20, 30, 50 times. Leave with cards stuffed into your little black book. Feeling like you just got 20+ hot leads... ... When really you got zero. Imagine these events happening right now Here's the thing: Real networking starts with helping others- Not thinking what you could get out of it. Building a network is really just building quality relationships. It can't be fast-tracked or forced. It takes time. If you're willing to put in the effort? You'll find that one quality relationship is worth thousands of business cards. Agree? #leadership #smallbusiness #coaching #sme

17.01.2022 In the Olympic Village, I stared at the radiology report, my athlete had multiple active stress fractures and multiple healed fractures - and she was racing tomorrow Representing her country, the dream of a lifetime She had lived and raced with pain for years but had the tenacity to push through it, to focus on the one thing she was good at, her greatest opportunity... The traits of a great athlete are the same as the traits of a great business owner * Focus - to achieve their goal * Strategy - plan to achieve that goal * Resilience - strength & determination to get back up again each time you fall * Constant improvement - find learnings from each failure, adapt, refine & perfect your technique The biggest piece small business owners are missing is the strategy Lack of strategy will erode the focus that you likely had at the start of your business journey, you will get distracted by the business bushfires that need your attention on a daily basis Think like an Olympian, focus on your strategy and watch your business grow! At the Sydney 2000 Olympics I was a part of the medical team and also ran with the Olympic Torch - or as my son tells people - Mum ran at the Olympics I’ll take that! Sydney 2000 Olympics 20th Anniversary!

15.01.2022 Merry Christmas! Hope you're all having a wonderful and relaxing day. I hope you all got what you wanted from Santa (a copy of Big Little Business )

15.01.2022 I’m fundamentally a lazy person. "So... meaning you sit around a do nothing?" No!... Meaning I constantly look for ways to get stuff done quickly ESPECIALLY the stuff I don't like doing. No matter what, it'll get done. I just prefer to get in and outso I can get on to doing the stuff that I enjoy more. The side effect of my laziness? I can focus on the roles of my work I actually ENJOY. The most boring tasks are out of the way. And more stuff gets done. When you shift your mindset away from strengths vs weaknesses and into leveraging every aspect of yourself to your advantage, your outlook levels up. And your business follows suit. Agreed? #mindset #smallbusiness #positioning #leadership #growth #strategy #consulting #coaching

15.01.2022 Checking out the good reads at Botanical Style on Charters Towers Road - stockists of Big Little Business and all things beautiful. #townsvillelocalbusiness #townsvilleshines #biglittlebusiness #jaynearlettconsulting

14.01.2022 The best leaders I know are good at one thing: Simplifying. Great leaders cut through argument, debate and doubt to offer solutions everybody can understand.... Simplicity, though, is hard. It requires critical thought and tough decisions. How can you achieve simplicity? With the rule of 3. Research shows that we find it easier to understand and remember information if it's delivered in threes. New iPhones are thinner, lighter, and faster. New coffee shops are cozier, quicker, and tastier. New businesses are more creative, more adaptable, and more innovative. Ultimately, the rule of 3 allows your team to: 1 think carefully about what's important 2 remove or stop stuff that isn't 3 maintain a laser focus on execution How? By asking yourself 3 questions every week: 1 What 3 products/initiatives are working well for us right now - how can we sell/do more of this? 2 What 3 products/initiatives are not working well for us right now - and why? What are we going to do about this? 3 What are our most important strategic initiatives? Focus on only 3 things at a time. Cut out the rest. That's simplicity. Agreed?

14.01.2022 If you are Townsville based and not a TBWC member get on board! It’s worth it for the excellent Quick Bites Education sessions and the mentoring opportunities, let alone the other inclusions!

13.01.2022 Last week I was so happy to launch my book Big Little Business. Shout out to Glen Richards who has supported the book from the beginning and contributed the wonderful foreword. 13.01.2022 Are you a Queensland Regional Small Business? Would you benefit from some support to help your business recover from the impact of COVID-19 and adapt to our ‘new normal’? $10,000 OPPORTUNITY! ... Amazingly, there are still some opportunities for the Adaption Grant in Regional Queensland - and I never like to see government grant money go to waste! Grant money is a valuable business resource - But ONLY when put to good use. My perspective? Leverage the funding Using grant money for short term expenses does not add long term value to you business Use the money strategically to leverage - turn a $10k grant into $50k or more The best value for businesses right now are: 1 Strategic Planning & Business Coaching for sustainability & new business opportunities 2 Marketing Strategy and Coaching for market penetration 3 Digital training for developing your tech skills If you are not sure how you can best use grant money help your small business let me know in the comments and I'm happy to chat through some options! Share and tag a small business owner that could benefit.

12.01.2022 A client of mine made a major mistake and is devastated But mistakes are not the end of the world "But what if my stupidity leads to a major crisis and my business doesn't survive?"... Some mistakes are worse than others. No single mistake ends it all. And when they DO happen, you can control three critical things Customers/clients/colleagues accept that mistakes happen, we are all human. When aggrieved, people want to: 1. Be heard 2. Have their problem fixed 3. Know that it won’t happen again You can do this - 1. Take responsibility - own it - mea culpa! 2. Make restitution - fix the elements that you can, compensate (or over compensate) the people affected 3. Put steps in place so that it won't happen again - and tell your client Mistakes are tiny failures But they are big learning opportunities. They don't have to derail you. You are not the sum of your mistakes. Instead, move on - and learn. Have more awareness next time around. Mistakes aren't the end - how you deal with them is. Agreed? #leadership #growth #coaching #businessconsultant

12.01.2022 Thanks Bettina Warburton for the great feature in today’s Townsville Bulletin, The Eye. Thank you for supporting local authors! I have spent many years growing my own Little Businesses as well as serving as a Board Director on many Big Businesses and Organisations. The strategies used in Big Business can be used to help Little Businesses grow. I spend my days as a business consultant helping them do just that and now my Big Little Business book can help spread that knowledge... far and wide! https://jaynearlett.com.au/book/

11.01.2022 I’m having a rest and recovery day today after a fabulous (but very busy) Christmas Day! I hope you enjoyed your day too Flicking through the paper today - and guess who made the social pages! Big Little Business and many of those who helped me celebrate the launch

11.01.2022 Need growth in your business? Just change 10 minutes of your day Massive growth doesn't come from massive action - It comes from small, daily habits that move you closer to your goals... Elite athletes know this Successful leaders know this Buddha knew this What's stopping you? You may have been told: "You'll never succeed if you don't ..." "... worked for me, so it'll work for you!" Stop trying to be someone else Just check-in with yourself My 5 minute morning check in routine before I start work: What must happen today? Have I allocated time in my diary for today’s important tasks? What task will I do first? And at the end of my day, I have a 5 minute check-out routine: What did I accomplish today? Acknowledge the wins! Are there little tasks I need to attend to so I can disconnect - send that quick email or make that short call. Schedule larger jobs for tomorrow or a later date What will I start on first tomorrow? Set routines that work for you Allow yourself the time to check-in, then check-out at the end of the day Not only will you build healthy habits, You'll build clarity and productivity What do you do to start/end your day? What are your positive habits? Anything you'd add to these lists? #growth #consulting #strategy #businessgrowth

06.01.2022 Are you a expert or an entrepreneur? What’s the difference - and does it matter? Dilbert’s morning cartoon provides a water cooler conversation interpretation that’s not too far off the mark! We need experts who provide depth of knowledge and historical information as well as analysis and forward projections. But we also need entrepreneurs who will see beyond, see the possibilities and challenge the accepted pathways. ... Can you be both an expert and an entrepreneur - absolutely! But you don’t have to be both. Expert knowledge is enormously valuable, but it can at times, be constraining. Some of our great innovators and entrepreneurs have achieved great things because they simply didn’t realise they couldn’t! Note: I don’t count Dilbert as an expert in anything - but perhaps he is an entrepreneur? #smallbusiness #biglittlebusiness #consulting #growth #entrepreneur

05.01.2022 If you want to enjoy being a businessperson Get addicted to rollercoasters! Here's the thing: As business owners, we're all on the same ride.... It’s what you signed up to when you went into business Whether you knew it or not. Those that resist it every step of the way don't ever get off the ride, they just end up without good memories of it. You can choose your outcome. At the top of the rollercoaster, we'll all enjoy the view But only half of us will be prepared for the fall. After every upthere is a down. Will you rush down screaming for your life, or with your hands in the air? Save yourself from the fear of the unexpected with preparation. If you know you're getting on a rollercoaster... ... Take some time to look at the full picture. And after every downthere is an up. Understand the ups and the downs. Watch how others ride. Pay attention to those who enjoy themselves on the way out. Prepare yourself for the unexpected So that even when the rollercoaster goes backwards, you're ready. I'm a rollercoaster junkie (quite literally). Are you? #entrepreurship #businessgrowth #smallbusiness #leadership

01.01.2022 Very excited that Big Little Business made the Best Seller list at my favourite book store - Mary Who? What’s on your holiday reading list? I have just finished:... Trent Dalton’s Boy Swallows Universe (love this, based in Brisbane, part fact, part fiction) Trent Dalton’s All the Shimmering Skies (a little ‘flowery’ in parts, but an excellent holiday read), Bruce Pascoe’s Dark Emu (an important and interesting piece to gain a deeper understanding of our country’s history) Next on my list: Rutger Bregman’s Humankind - a Hopeful History - ‘a declaration of faith in the innate goodness and natural decency of human beings’ - starting this one tomorrow Jane Harpers The Survivors - looks like a great read! On my wish list! Joseph Bank’s Florilegium - ‘A full-colour publication of the botanical illustrations commissioned by Joseph Banks, with expert commentaries.’ Share your favourite reads
