24.01.2022 Recently, we asked you to submit any questions you have as a teen living with T1D. Thanks to everyone who got involved - we had a great variety of queries including talking to friends about your diabetes, T1D and periods, managing blood glucose levels with alcohol and more. Experts Simone Collins (Diabetes Social Worker at Canberra Health Services), Fiona Scott (Credentialled Diabetes Educator) and Melanie Cullen (Paediatric Psychologist and Insulin Pump Program Coordinator at JDRF Australia) got together in a judgment-free zone to give you some answers. We caught up with Prof Kay to hear a bit more about the BANDIT trial and some of the JDRF-supported work leading up to this point. Read more here:

19.01.2022 Check out Diabetes Won't Stop Us: A video by the Spotlight on Storytelling Teen Session at the 2020 JDRF Type One Summit. During the workshop, 19 teens with type 1 and their hypo-helper siblings learned video production skills and produced an entire video from beginning to end: brainstorming ideas, interviewing each other, designing artwork, selecting music, and copywriting for social media (including hashtags!). "This video is made to inform people on how diabetes affects family, friends and how everyone needs to be involved." After the workshop, the teens shared some valuable takeaways: "I really loved making new friends." "People feel the same as me." "Leaving here with a different perspective on T1D. You are not alone."

18.01.2022 Congratulations to Dr Wilson Wong for receiving the 2020 Lindsey Baudinet Rising Star Award in Type 1 Diabetes Research from the Australian Diabetes Society! The award will help Dr Wong initiate a small follow-up project to the work he started during his PhD, which was supported by a JDRF PhD Top-Up grant. Dr Wong is investigating genetic markers that are associated with islet cell quality. These markers can be used to assess whether a donor pancreas contains islet cells that meet the quality threshold for a clinical islet transplant, or lower quality cells that can be used in lab research. This important work could potentially make islet transplants more efficient in the future, as well as saving costs.

17.01.2022 Perth siblings Robyn King and her brother Greg had vastly different introductions to the world of type 1 diabetes. While Robyn was diagnosed at 8 in South Africa when technology was a lot less advanced, Gregs diagnosis came 11 years later at 14 and he was immediately put on a pump as part of a clinical trial. Despite the differences in their diagnosis journeys, Robyn and Greg can agree on one thing: its the social and lifestyle challenges that come after diagnosis which they have in common. Read about the challenges theyve faced and how they managed them via the link below.

09.01.2022 You may have heard that getting a new T1D treatment or device to market can take around 12 to 15 years! This is because theres a huge amount of work that must take place before that intervention can be approved as being safe for use from laboratory research in cells, right through to large clinical trials involving hundreds of people. JDRF funds research at all stages of this research pathway, supporting ideas from the lab right through to clinical trials. Heres a quick look at how a research idea can become a breakthrough for someone with T1D. You can also read more about this process in our full article here: https://bit.ly/3k3mfCH

07.01.2022 Did you know that family members of someone with T1D have a higher chance of developing the condition themselves? Type1Screen is a free screening service funded by JDRF thats available to ANY family member of a person with T1D including siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews, or grandchildren. Through a blood test, Type1Screen can detect the earliest signs of T1D antibody markers that are present before physical symptoms begin. Finding out your risk early can give you the... option of enrolling in clinical trials of new therapies that aim to prevent or delay the onset of T1D. Getting involved is as easy as reading and signing a consent form, then visiting a pathology centre to get blood taken. Pathology centres across Australia have plenty of new hygiene and social distancing measures in place to keep you safe and healthy when youre getting blood taken. To find out more about Type1Screen visit www.type1screen.org
