13.01.2022 No one who sees this photograph can ever forget it. It captures the purest essence of a mother's compassionate love for a daughter who has been irreparably dam...aged by mercury poisoning causing her to be blind and totally disabled. The tenderness and heartbreaking selflessness displayed in this one picture captures the highest form of love the Greeks called agape, sacrificial love. Shot by W. Eugene Smith while documenting the story of a chemical company in Minamata, he came face to face with victims of the horrific environmental degradation caused by the factory which lasted from 1938 until the late 1960's. The first time I saw W. Eugene Smith’s photographs was in a fine art photography class in college. As we worked on our own pictures in the darkroom, we talked with awe about Smith’s legendary obsession for perfection, which drove him to spend long days in the darkroom. His drive and idealism fascinated me. I recall the story about how he was beaten by thugs hired by the company, and how it caused irreparable damage to his vision. This image represents Smith’s unique ability to combine the eye of a photographer and the attitude of an artist with raw honesty and uncompromising determination. All photographers, in one sense or another, are heirs to his legacy.
11.01.2022 A BIT OF BETA HISTORY As founder and then director of what had grown to be come the best event of it's kind in Australia, the Ballarat International Foto Bienna...le [BIFB] I was looking for something to keep our audience engaged over the 23 months between festivals without confusing the issue as to what it was - a free online magazine that followed the same philosophy as the festival - an event that celebrated the diversity of the photographic idiom. BIFB Board Member Heidi Romano, a graphic designer and editor and publisher of her own online magazine 'Unless You Will [UYW] took on the designer role for the first 6 issues. The contributors for the launch issue were artists who had appeared at BIFB'09 and BIFB'11. From issue number 7, BIFB design intern Penelope Crabtree took over the designer role which continued until issue number 20 in 2016. After 12 hard years at the helm of the festival I no longer had the drive or the energy to commit to another round of begging and so we parted ways, but I maintained authorship of the magazine. As of issue number 21 I have become chief cook and bottle washer, taking on the design task along with editorial and publishing responsibilities. BETA developments in photography has pretty much settled into the current format - four photographers per issue, each with around 20 page folios for around 100 pages total. Minimal text, no advertising, and free! As of issue number 25 BETA is available as a high quality printed version print on demand via Blurb. Unfortunately the printed copy is not free, but relatively inexpensive. www.betadip.com
