25.01.2022 It’s a huge emotional undertaking if you do it the right way... and exposes things about you that you don’t know about yourself... There is so much about this post that is ‘incredibly’ rich...in contrast to how ‘incredibly’ painful this young man says fatherhood can be.. The key being..... if you allow it

25.01.2022 All classes offer a new insight. When asked something she had learned in the workshop Nicole said BMW. And what better acronym to describe the amazing vehicle our bodies are, to grow, carry and eventually birth our babies.... Breathe to remember to focus on our breathing. Movement to help the baby negotiate the pelvis and help you to integrate the strong sensations of labour. Mind to keep ourselves focused on the task at hand. Water, to drink it, soak in it, shower in it and if we need gentle, tiny, injections of it. Thanks Nicole from now on this acronym will be used frequently. It was great to see everyone back face to face. There is a few places left in the October class. #naturalbirth #calmbirth #antenatalclasses #pregnancyclasses #gentlebirth

24.01.2022 Such a great snapshot of new motherhood if ever you have wondered where the time is going to go! Looking forward to Calmbirth workshop this weekend in the comfort of your own home via zoom.

24.01.2022 Finland wants to promote wellbeing and gender equality and is doing that by increasing parental leave 6.6 months leave that each parent can take. Parents would be allowed to transfer 60 days of their quota. Single parents would be allowed to use both allowances. The Nordic countries lead the way in giving fathers entitlement that cannot be transferred to the mother. The EU is also heading that way with a 2019 directive for member states to provide each parent with at least ...four months leave with two months that cannot be transferred. Portugal already has 120 days paid at 100% of salary and an optimal 30 days at 80% of salary. Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Estonia and Portugal were praised in a Unicef report in 2019 for offering the best family-friendly policies. UK, Greece, Cyprus and Switzerland the lowest 31 richcountries. Australia is not mentioned but with an average 2 wk paternity leave I am doubtful that we will be much higher than the "lowest 31" although there is changes afoot, particularly in the private sector. 22.01.2022 Loving Rhea Dempsey’s new book ‘Beyond the Birth Plan’. The knowledge she has of birth is unique and has so much depth from her years of working with birthing woman and their partners in their own environment. She is a pioneer. Read it if you can.... Looking forward to this weekends’ Calmbirth workshop. It is always interesting.

22.01.2022 .... and comments like this mean the world to me because that is the aim of calmbirth. To connect couples, ensure they are on the same page and help them see that birth IS such a tremendous opportunity however it unfolds. Join me for our zoom workshops in June and July. They are turning out to be just as interactive as before and we are all looking forward to the picnic when we catch up afterwards.

21.01.2022 In the last zoom class woman commented on how comfortable this felt when we practised this position. The rebozo is a hand woven traditional Mexican Shawl that can be used in labour to assist in better foetal positioning and for pain relief. Some woman even state it creates a more casual and relaxed atmosphere making them smile and laugh. It’s use is gaining in popularity in birthing rooms. This technique called sifting or jiggling can help to relax tight ligaments in the... pelvis. It involves gently lifting the belly and gently rocking from side to side and can be done during pregnancy and in between the contractions/waves of labour. More information can be found on the Spinning Babies website. Thanks to Empowering Birth Journeys for the image. #jennychildscalmbirth #calmbirth #antenatal classes #rebozo #natural birth #pain releif in labour See more

20.01.2022 Annabel Crabb’s fascinating exploration of our culture and legislation around parenthood reveals a gap in the way fathers of this generation may want to parent and the obstacles that prevent them including flexibility in the workplace and involvement in the first 6 months of babies birth.

18.01.2022 A great conversation with a Calmbirth Practitioner Mel Webb who is also a Dr of Chinese medicine. She talk about how chinese medicine can benefit pregnancy, labour, birth and the fourth trimester. Chinese medicine is a particular way of working with the body. Mel states people will tell you one quarter of the information and then you put your hands on the body and through reading it in many different ways you understand the other three quarters. She talks about working w...ith woman in different stages of pregnancy including fertility itself, nausea and using moxa sticks to assist the baby into a better position. Key to the discussion is bringing the body back to flow, working with the breath and "sinking the body into relaxation". This can help you into labour and enhance the process. Using the power of touch in labour and the shin and sacrum points that we teach in calmbirth (and that the partner can assist with) are all tools that can be used. Even after the birth "mother warming" or a session to settle the anxiety that can be present with the transformation into motherhood can be beneficial to woman. A great insight into how TCM works for woman during this time. Thanks Mel and Karen. See more

18.01.2022 Looking forward to it. A new location in Dulwich Hill with lots of space for restrictions. It will definately be easier showing the pelvic diameters in real life.

16.01.2022 Penny Simkins utube on slow dancing is a gentle explanation of how upright posture and movement can help the baby navigate the pelvis in labour.

14.01.2022 Birthing on country are initiatives that incorporate traditional practise and value indigenous and non-indigenous ways of knowing and learning. Already these services in Brisbane have seen marked improvements in mothers and babies health. Aboriginal woman have been birthing on this country for thousands of years. ... All they are asking is for us to....listen.

13.01.2022 Today I am working with a lovely new and aspiring midwife. Her family left Sierra Leone prior to the civil war in the early 90’s. In Sierra Leone the concept of becoming a mother is culturally celebrated and respected.... Birth is seen as a normal event, traditionally accompanied by the women of the family - Mothers, Aunts and Sisters. After the birth these women will look after you, someone will move in to attend to the cooking and cleaning and looking after the other children for as long as you need. It is seen as important that you have time to ‘rest and recover’. Seven days after the baby is born there is a naming ceremony called ‘Punadoh’. It is attended by family and the wider community and is seen as introducing the baby to the wider world. They will bring food and gifts and best wishes for the baby. Having a baby is seen as a blessing. Her family left civil unrest to begin life in Australia for their children. They say to her and her siblings Go further than us, but always give back to the community We are lucky that her family chose Australia. She will be a very good midwife.

13.01.2022 It has been three weeks since ‘Birth Trauma Awareness Week’ and the facebook forum of the same name. If you get a chance listen to it. Birth trauma affects 10-30% of women.... It is a serious issue that impacts women’s mental health, their partners, their families and their children. Birth trauma is not always about what actually happens in birth, it is about how it happens. It is commonly related to interpersonal factors. Microaggressions. Feeling overpowered, not being listened too, your needs and wants not being taken into consideration. It can be a look, a word, being made to feel stupid or not being given respect or love. Birth trauma is subjective. What may impact one woman may not impact another. It is about trust and connection. Due to the birthing hormone oxytocin a woman is looking, needing, wanting this in labour. It is important. How you feel about your baby is ‘totally different from your journey to meeting them’. You cannot ‘just get over it’. Birth trauma first needs to be acknowledged. You have to process and move through it. Debby Gould is a private birth counsellor and has written the book How to heal from a bad birth. I shall look forward to reading it.

12.01.2022 Last weekend (at Jan Calmbirth workshop), we found ourselves discussing why babies are so hairy, the name eluded us......It is 'Lanugo' and protects the baby in the uterine environment. There are other newborn oddities that you may find interesting..

11.01.2022 Yvette Miller is a dynamic and innovative Associate Professor specialising in mothers and babies health services. If you would like to contribute to improving maternity care in Australia and have had a baby in the last 3 years please fill in this survey. Your input counts.

10.01.2022 I did my first zoom class over the weekend. Feeling pretty chuffed with myself..........It was fun and interactive and in some ways I felt even more connected to everybody. 10.01.2022 Fascinating graph in 2014 explaining the reasons for the first caesarean. Notice that the main reason for primary CS is because the labour is not progressing. The ACOG (American College of Gynaecologists) article that accompanies the graph goes on to say maybe it is time to revisit the definitions of labour progress as contemporary labour progresses at a rate substantially slower than what has been historically taught.

07.01.2022 "They told you about the contractions, but did they tell you about the expansion? Did they tell you how your body would open to make way for the whole universe to pass through? Did they tell you how your heart would explode with a love bigger than anything you’ve ever known......"

06.01.2022 I am strong, I am invincible. This was prompted by asking the pregnant women in the room during the October calmbirth workshop what they wanted to bring to their own birth. Amongst the many words that were said including strength... thanks to Mel and the late great Helen Reddy, the word ‘invincible’ was introduced.... What a great word to bring to birth! Just saying it makes you feel so much bigger. It reminds me of the well known quote by Laura Stavoe Harm ‘There is a secret in our culture and it is not that birth is painful. It is that women are strong’.

06.01.2022 Places still available for the June 6th and 7th, Comfortable in your Home zoom calmbirth workshop. 30% off covid care sale still remains for the next two days. You will both walk away strong and confident prepared for your birth and any unforeseen challenges that may arise.

05.01.2022 Amazing image and information of mechanical induction. Thankyou @motherboardbirth MECHANICAL INDUCTION ... Mechanical induction methods are often used when an induction is desired or necessary but the cervix isn't quite ready for labor to begin. With a balloon induction, your provider places catheter inside your cervix. Two common brand names are Cook catheter and Foley catheter. The catheter has a balloon at the end that is filled with sterile water which puts pressure on your cervix. It can open your cervix up to about 3-5 cm before it falls out. This method uses pressure to open your cervix. The goal is to prepare your cervix and possibly encourage your body to start labor on its own. If you don’t start having contractions, additional medication may be recommended to cause contractions. See more

04.01.2022 Did you know that there are actual brain changes in pregnancy? In fact your mind can get an upgrade. There is increased numbers of neurons and neural connections in the taste and smell centres of a mother’s brain.... These improvements are also in the emotional centres including the amygdala increasing her emotional intelligence. The increases in progesterone and oestrogen in pregnancy protect the mother against the ‘ neuro-stress’ of high cortisol which means she is able to be hyper vigilant to protect the baby but not necessarily anxious with that. Specific pregnancy upgrades are what psychologists refer to as being ‘learning ready’. In other words the brain is primed to be a better learner on all topics. All of your senses may be heightened. Cognition may even improve throughout pregnancy. You are actually becoming slightly smarter but with a skill set that is leading you to have slower but more insightful thinking and sensory enhancement. All critical to your important new role as a mother and sometimes quite a change from your previous regular thought processes. Isn’t that fascinating. Happy Mother’s day.

03.01.2022 Delayed cord clamping increases blood volume, iron stores, antibodies. stem cells, it has even been found to increase fine motor skills in your toddler! What a great start for babies. Ask your caregiver if they practise delayed cord clamping?

02.01.2022 Our bodies have so much capacity, if we allow it. Looking forward to the Spinning Babies World Confluence in October. To all fellow midwives out there, consider joining me. ... There is so much to be gained from the embodied knowledge of the pelvis and movement in pregnancy and birth. #calmbirth #JennyChildscalmbirth #antenatalclasses #birthclassessydney

01.01.2022 Fascinating insight into the changing workload of mothers and fathers when a child is born from the Australian institute of family studies. A mothers parenting hours shoot up from zero to forty five hrs a week and her time spent on housework abruptly doubles and stays that way. As Annabel Crabb states in the Quarterly Essay, Men at Work it is the baldest possible visual demonstration of how differently mothers and fathers experience work life balance. A must read for all those interested in evolving workplaces to include a more supportive parenting paradigm. Hear the conversation on 'chat 10 looks 3' ep 119 and 'tales from the fourth trimester' ep 25.
