25.01.2022 NATURAL MEDICINE INDUSTRY.. what a shamble. Yesterday I attended a conference for 'Leaders in Weight Loss' recommended by my professional association. I was hoping for an up-to-date public health insight to obesity management in this country. As a private consultant, I think it is important to be well informed about all the weight loss info people are seeking - good, bad or down-right waste of time. To keep this short, I found myself in a room where I probably didn't belong.... Those attending were involved mostly in an online course to become an 'accredited' Weight Loss Consultant. There were lots of high-fives, pats on the back and WOW stories of inspiration and over-coming hardship. Don't get me wrong, there is certainly a place for these people, and they are certainly doing more good than harm... but where does that leave me and my so-called industry? It was disappointing that my Association lead me to an event that far from represents my clinical work as a professional health consultant. It made me realise how difficult it is for the public determine who is the right professional to clinically assist with losing weight. There is nothing that clearly separates me as a health professional, from those who have simply done an online motivational course. The term 'accredited' is very loosely thrown around - it means nothing. Always look for professional registration and health fund provider recognition when seeking out a private health consultant. Higher levels of education are required to have these registrations. All the best Jess

25.01.2022 My new Toowong clinic. Not long now.

25.01.2022 Hi folks! Long time between posts. I do have a great sequel to my 'Parasites' post (coming eventually). However today I'm hanging my clinic hat in preparation for the arrival of our 4th bub. As we all settle, I'll find some time to share some more of my stories here about the incredible human body & its capabilities. All the very best, Jess.

23.01.2022 4 CORNERS TONIGHT having a crack at vitamins... and in some respects, rightly so. What I'm not expecting to see is the separation of prescription vitamins vs retail products like Swisse & Blackmores. I anticipate much focus will be directed toward complementary medicines sold through pharmacy and supermarkets.... Australia has some of the highest and most vigilantly monitored standards for supplements in the world. The supplements I prescribe are regulated as medicines, not dietary supplements and are backed by strong, validated scientific research. Adverse events are recorded and monitored by the TGA in the same way prescription medicines are and company manufacturing facilities are required to meet audit standards which are the same as pharmaceutical standards. My 'Practitioner Only complementary medicines meet the required Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards and have an enviable audit record and I only choose suppliers who use ingredients assessed at levels that are safe as authorised by the TGA. Self prescribing vitamins and herbal medicines is like playing russian roulette with your health. Always seek the support of a registered practitioner for access to quality, scientifically proven and effective vitamins and minerals. Retail supplements can quite rightly be ineffective and dangerous. (Thanks to Metagenics for part of this wording)

23.01.2022 GROUP B STREP in late pregnancy... Here's a story that will require a sequel. I have just discovered I have a Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infection at 35 weeks gestation. Sounds horrific, however GBS is quite a common and uneventful bacteria that lives in our digestive tract which occasionally has an opportunity to flourish in the appropriate conditions. Kind of like candida, these bugs live naturally but can occasionally flourish and present as thrush. GBS is generally a...symptomatic however, if bub is exposed to the bacteria through the birth canal, infection can be catastrophic, even life-threatening to a newborn. The standard procedure is to give IV antibiotics to Mum during labour to eliminate risk of transferring to bub. It's not uncommon. Treating GBS with antibiotics earlier is pretty ineffective as it can and does quickly and easily recur. Treatment IV needs to happen within 4 hours of giving birth. My problem here... IV antibiotics take 1hr to get into the system and take effect. This is my 4th birth and so far none have taken longer than 45 minutes (yes champion birthing genes). Hence, I will need to be induced so I can receive medication and birth in a safe environment. I kind of want to labour naturally... however by the time you reach number 4, idealistic birth plans have long been thrown out the window and a safe delivery of bub, however the means, is a complete success! Initially I said, ok fair enough, lets book the induction... then I remembered I have skills and 13 years experience in managing gut health... If GBS is simply an overgrowth of unfavourable gut bacteria, that's a pretty simple fix in my book. I know exactly why I've grown these bugs - a bit of chocolate egg consumption, cravings for toast and breakfast cereal probably too much sweet, delicious summer fruit. Perfect gut conditions for bugs to grow! Now I'm posting this because I'm quite okay to publicly fail at my attempt and go ahead with the antibiotics / induction, if it means bub will be safe. My plan - complete dietary overhaul, it's now very much a goodie-two-shoes diet of vegies, nuts, seeds, oils, some fruits, whole grains, filtered water and a little meat. Keeping in mind that gut/brain connection we all hear about - stress is not ideal during this treatment plan. My amazing yogababy classes are wonderful! I'm also using a specific strain of probiotic, garlic, slippery elm and another herbal combination (safe in pregnancy) to inhibit further bacteria growth. *Remember I am registered to access prescription herbal medicines and probiotics. Please don't ever self-prescribe for your own health conditions. I will retest for GBS at 38 weeks... (keeping in mind so far I have not birthed before 40 weeks). Watch this space for the outcome. Wishing you all good health, Jess.

23.01.2022 GLUTEN consumption, even in a non-sensitive person, causes an increase in gut permeability - not to the extent seen in coeliac disease, but long term gluten intake will most likely result in Leaky Gut. I have attached one of many studies that shows how gluten exposure in the gut, causes increased release of zonulin - zonulin opens up the spaces between the cells of the intestinal lining. This normally occurs, in order for nutrient and other molecules to get in and out of the intestine. However, when leaky gut is present, the spaces between the cells open up too much and this allows the larger protein molecules to get into the bloodstream. 22.01.2022 WHAT YOURE EATING ISNT JUST ABOUT BEING FAT OR SKINNY... Thats just the cosmetic tip of the iceberg. In a world of consumerism and mass agriculture, food is available at our fingertips, all year round. Food is no longer a means to survive, it is a convenience, an emotional crutch, a habit, a celebration, a treat, an abuse, an addiction, an indulgence...... We eat for so many reasons, outside our basic need to stay alive and maintain health. My friend and colleague recently attended an Integrative Cancer seminar in Germany. The photo in this post lists the World Cancer Research Funds top cancer prevention recommendations. These are also effectively the ways to avoid chronic disease. This comes as a reminder that our health is often a direct reflection of what we are eating. Diet is certainly not the only thing to blame when our life expectancy or quality is suddenly on notice, however it sure is up there as one of the greatest contributing factors to disease - especially if we are over-weight as a result. Sugar kills your good gut bacteria. Refined carbohydrates are basically sugar - thats what your body turns it into. Your indulgent foods increase your acidity - this will help your arthritis burn, anxiety excel, your IBS flourish and your cancer cells grow. A lack of vegetables diminishes the bodys essential nutrients for growth and repair - immunity, mood stability, tissue regeneration, reproduction, detoxification, strength... the list is endless. Drink water - lots of it, every day. Water is the cheapest, most effective nutrient known to man. Thats an easy one. Show your kids by example, that making healthy choices with food is a longevity and survival skill. They will learn more, maintain better control and grow to have healthier babies of their own. None of us are immune to chronic disease. I sure dont want to wait until my life expectancy is on notice to make some very simple changes to my lifestyle, you shouldnt wait either. Eat mindfully and in moderation. Eat food, less of it and mainly plants. Good health to all of you. Jess

21.01.2022 Avoid drinking from the hot water tap - for so many reasons! Loads of people rinse their mouth in the shower, fill the kettle or a saucepan with water from the hot tap. We recently had to cut our hot water tank into 2 pieces to remove it from its location under the stairs. I was astounded when I saw the serious bucket loads of waste and weird growths residing inside. Mums words as a kid came flooding back "Never drink from the hot water tap!". So Ive taken the time to l...ook into just what all that yukkiness was, inside our grotty tank. #1 Sacrificial Anodes are a metal plate inside the tank which are used as a corrosive agent so the tank itself doesnt corrode. Usually made up of Aluminium and Magnesium, over time they do their job and corrode into a sediment in the tank (in the water). #2 We have a heat limit on our tank so our kids dont burn themselves - this encourages nasty bacterias to inhabit the tank, the well publicised Legionella bacteria is the one that comes to mind. #3 Hot water corrodes things by nature.. the longer it sits in pipes, the more it collects the elements in the pipe ie lead / copper. Hot water is for the luxury of a warm shower only - clearly never intended as a beverage or ingestible substance. My advice, go one step further and drink filtered water - do your body a huge favour and drink 2 litres of it each day :) http://www.hotwatertechnology.com/techn/sacrificial-anodes/

21.01.2022 Today youre at risk of post-Christmas food poisoning. Ditch the left over prawns & ensure the proteins are stored safely. Wishing you a safe and healthy new year! http://inthecove.com.au//lane-cove-how-to-avoid-food-pois/

21.01.2022 SHOULD WE EAT RED MEAT or any meat? Its a topic receiving quite a bit of attention, especially after the World Health Organisation (WHO) released their findings listing processed meat as a carcinogen directly linked to bowel cancer. Fresh red meat was also in the firing line, WHO stating over 500g consumption per week also increases our cancer risk. The answer to this question isnt simple in my opinion. Red meat contains essential nutrients that we cannot obtain from other...Continue reading

19.01.2022 COCONUT DRINKS finally recalled for containing undeclared DAIRY after a 10 year old child died from Anaphylactic shock in 2013. Only this year 2015, we have finally seen an investigation into other coconut drinks being tested for undeclared dairy after there was another case where a 9 year old almost died from Anaphylaxis (dairy) after ingesting an imported coconut drink.... Please be cautious when buying coconut products, most of them are made in third world countries where labeling and hygiene standards are poor. Hopefully we still have the frozen berry Hepatitis contamination memory fresh in our minds and we remain wary about the origins of our food. Sadly many Australians do prefer cheaper options when making food purchases, which drives the market to be flooded with imported foods from these poorer countries where labour is cheap. Buy what you can from local farmers markets. When buying packaged, choose Australian made and owned. It not only supports our economy, it appears to carry a much lower health risk. Take care, Jess. http://www.smh.com.au//child-aged-10-dies-after-drinking-c

19.01.2022 MARCH is National Nutrition Month! I can proudly say I have grasped the message whole heartedly this month after receiving my Group B Strep positive result. With some assistance from my dear colleagues Beth and Nicole, Ive completed 2 weeks of seriously healthy, gold-standard eating & probiotic treatment! Im entering into week 38 of pregnancy and surely enough, this is the best I have felt the whole time! Energy has improved, aches and pains are minimal, Im no longer sh...ort of breath, no fluid retention & the pain in my legs from veins, is significantly less. My diet before was okay healthy but a little lazy & a bit carb heavy... An A+ diet takes some commitment & planning, plenty of time spent in the kitchen preparing salads, juices, vegies and yummy creations to keep things exciting. Looking back, every minute making food this March, has been worth it! Yes I should know better, but we can all get a little lazy or uninspired at times. I had my follow up test for the Strep B today... a little ambitious with only 2 weeks of treatment. I will have the result on Friday. Make the most of March Nutrition Month, get your body healthy before the winter bugs set in Jess See more

19.01.2022 INFLUENZA... The Vaccination Debate. When it comes to vaccinating children, Im pretty much supportive - not at birth, but certainly in years to follow. The Flu shot however, I remain on the fence on whether or not its effective or worthwhile. I have just encountered a dose of Influenza in a very serious way. Paramedics took my temperature at 40.4 degrees - Id started to go septic. It was 5 days unable to move and terrible illness on so many levels. Now 2 weeks later, I...m still very fragile and dealing with post infections. For those who know me, I never get sick like this... This meant I was unable to care for my family and cancelling all my appointments with patients in need. It raised the question.. Am I being irresponsible as a mother and a health care provider for not vaccinating against the Flu? Those who lead my industry have asked me why I let myself get sick in the first place - I know there were a series of events that got me to that point.. A lesson learnt. More attention to my overall well being will probably do my immune system the world of good in future. Those in the medical profession ie my GP basically forgave me for missing my jab this year but of course warned I shall not be stupid enough to forget it again next year... I must point out here that my husband (who got his flu vac this year) was the only one to remain healthy in a house full of Influenza. I have been seriously ill. I know there is a vaccine that will likely protect me from it again next year. So why arent I lining up to eagerly get immunised? I have this feeling of giving in like Id be abandoning my treat the cause methodology. I know why I got sick and I wont go back there. Its okay to take this stand when you have only yourself to be responsible for... but now with a family and a business, should my ideals change to support the Flu Vaccine or should I be even more idealistic about strengthening my overall health to avoid illness naturally? Whilst I sit a bit longer on the fence here... I urge you all to keep your hands washed, manage your stress, get some good sleep, nourish your body with good food and water, and stay home to rest if you start to become unwell. We still have a long winter ahead of us. Healthy regards, Jess.

16.01.2022 High Arsenic in Australian Rice: FSANZ outlines the acceptable arsenic levels in Australian rice is 1mg/kg. In China and Thailand, the limit for arsenic is only 0.15mg/kg. This was brought to our attention by the mum of one of our 9yr old patients. He went through 2 rounds of chelation therapy to remove heavy metals from his body, which all came down except for the arsenic. On a gluten free diet, rice was a daily consumer for the child as rice milk, rice crackers, steamed... rice, rice flour in baking etc. After mindful reduction of rice products in his diet, the arsenic levels came down significantly. This is a case to be aware of. The plan is to eat rice mindfully. Boil and rinse method reduces the arsenic by 30% compared to absorption method. Ironically, arsenic is most concentrated in the bran of brown rice (the healthier alternative).

16.01.2022 RED MEAT... IS THERE REALLY A CANCER RISK? Its been on my mind for some time now - red and processed meats increase our risk of bowel cancer. Ive had a tendency to promote red meat in ones diet. Now, with World Health Organisation for the second time releasing warnings about red & processed meats, I find my recommendations to date are seriously in question.... The World Cancer Research Fund have some very confronting information on their website (see link below). Eight cohort studies showed a 17 per cent increased risk (of bowel cancer) per 100g red meat per day. The analysis of nine cohort studies found strong evidence that eating processed meat increases the risk of bowel cancer by 18 per cent per 50g processed meat per day. These percentages are enough to make me sit up and pay attention. No more than 500g of red meat per week and generally avoid processed meats all together. Keep in mind that fresh, quality red meat is also a good source of valuable nutrients, such as protein, iron, zinc and vitamin B12, so it can contribute to a healthy, balanced diet in small quantities. Just like smoking is a known cause of lung cancer, red & processed meat is now a known cause of bowel cancer. Okay, so not all of us will get lung cancer from smoking, and we wont all end up with bowel cancer from eating meat, however I choose to take these recommendations on board. Cancer is something Id actively like to practice avoiding. Healthy regards to all Jess http://wcrf.org//red-meat-and-bowel-cancer-risk-how-strong

15.01.2022 Rapid Fat Loss: It's been more than a year now since I introduced this incredible fat loss system to my patients. 14.01.2022 SORE THROAT? A Winter Warming Tea Home Remedy I dont encourage people to self-prescribe herbs too often, however you cant beat a brew of Lemon, Thyme & Ginger (with a bit of raw honey) when youre down with a sore throat. Slice up some lemon, small bunch of fresh thyme & grate some ginger - as much as you can handle. Cover with cold water and slowly bring to a simmer (lid on, you dont want to lose your essential oils) for a couple of minutes. Strain & add honey to taste.... Here is a little science on Ginger attached - by Kerry Bone. Thyme is a potent antimicrobial - great for sore throats too. http://www.mediherb.com.au/media/276911/prno52.pdf

14.01.2022 THERE IS A NEED FOR BOTH... What I like about this gentlemans statement is he acknowledges the requirement for medicine, he also emphasises the important role of natural medicines in health. I support modern medicine, there are people in the medical industry doing amazing things. Like anything, there are flaws and misuses in medicine, no system is perfect. The role of natural medicine for health resilience and the management of chronic conditions is a crucial part of med...icine - it completes the cycle. Especially our children. We are seeing an increase in learning problems, behavioral and concentration issues in our kids... its frightening to see medical prescriptions being handed out for long term management. From experience in my own clinic, I know that diet has a huge impact in the management of these conditions. It saddens me further that among the parents wholl do anything, there are still some who choose to medicate and dismiss dietary changes due to impracticality. A long-term diet change is difficult at first... everything is difficult at first. The long term benefits however, are indisputable. Try not to choose one form of medicine over another, they both play an important role. Any good practitioner, natural or medical should refer on when there is a need. Wishing you all good health. Jess

12.01.2022 Brown rice contains more arsenic than white rice... Rinsing before cooking or cooking it "pasta-style" can help reduce arsenic levels. But there is a trade-off, "pasta-style" also reduces B vitamin levels... So the best advice: portion control! http://bit.ly/29zy1Gm

11.01.2022 The many stories behind ECZEMA Gee what an amazing organ the skin is... yes that's right, it's an organ and any sign of irritation on it's surface is often a result of something happening on the inside (but that's not always the case). I have many interesting stories about treating eczema. By the time people reach me, they've usually identified if there's an environmental / topical cause ie washing powder, pollen, seasonal, pets etc.. The ones I see are the more persistent u...nusual types. The most common presentations are food intolerance and with a bit of digestive repair and dietary change we generally see improvements. Life-long eczema can take much longer. Eventually the skin cells change and the damage can become irreversible or take much longer to repair. Here are a couple of great experiences I've had successfully treating eczema --> A little 12 month old bub with bleeding eczema, wrapped in bandages and terrible screaming at bath time because her skin was so inflamed. We eventually had a complete break through with sub-lingual vitamin B12. It's been shown to help breakdown nitric oxide in the skin cells that concentrate eczema/dermatitis. Vitamin B12 can also support digestive health if the patient poorly or does not absorb B12 in the stomach. Eczema from infancy can also be a fatty acid deficiency of Gamma Linolenic acid (GLA). These patients are poor converters of Linoleic acid to GLA. Evening primrose naturally contains the converted GLA and has shown to benefit these types of eczema. ENOUGH SCIENCE.. now for an emotional story I had a lovely Chinese lady, very timid. A first time mum and living in Australia for 3 years. She had terrible eczema all over her face. Again after many unsuccessful attempts we looked at her emotional state. She was terrified of Australian men, she'd been verbally abused in the street by men and was very anxious about leaving the house. We used some herbs to address the anxiety and identified with this cause... and her eczema cleared up! And lastly... a lady in her 50's with eczema on her hands for over 30 years. She'd adopted out a child in her teens - it wasn't until her daughter contacted her 30 years later, that the eczema resolved itself. This is a powerful emotional story and some people may never find the underlying cause for their eczema - especially if the cause is emotional. For all the amazing stories I have, I must also acknowledge there have been many I have not been able to solve.. The body is a truly mysterious and complex machine. http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/71/1/367s.full

10.01.2022 The results - GROUP B STREP in late pregnancy... Despite my best efforts I am still positive for Group B Strep at 38 weeks. Given my history of fast labours (av 40 minutes), this result means a planned induction to safely administer my antibiotics prior to birth. I was possibly a little ambitious to expect complete success in 10 days. Im a bit disappointed, antibiotics will safely eradicate the Strep B but will also kill off the beneficial bacteria that the baby would norma...lly collect through the birth canal, properly triggering their little immune system. I will next look to give bub some probiotics after birth, there is some wonderful research around the benefits of probiotics for newborns when necessary. Disappointment aside, it hasnt been a complete fail... as I mentioned in a previous post, I am feeling incredibly well after the complete dietary overhaul and treatment. I am still pretty slow and physically typical for 38 weeks but I have no fluid retention, more energy, a clearer head (baby brain not completely resolved) and the pain in my legs from veins has improved immensely (however still in compression stockings). Basically Ive gone from diabolical to pretty good, given the circumstances! This is a great reminder to anyone, that the food we eat is about SOOOO much more than weight and self esteem. We function better on every single level, when our food intake is rich in ALL the good fresh veg, fruit, proteins, wholegrains, oils, filtered water, nuts and seeds. The lack of sugar, refined carbs and caffeine makes a world of difference, it really does! All the best Jess

09.01.2022 SORE THROAT? A Winter Warming Tea Home Remedy I don't encourage people to self-prescribe herbs too often, however you can't beat a brew of Lemon, Thyme & Ginger (with a bit of raw honey) when you're down with a sore throat. Slice up some lemon, small bunch of fresh thyme & grate some ginger - as much as you can handle. Cover with cold water and slowly bring to a simmer (lid on, you don't want to lose your essential oils) for a couple of minutes. Strain & add honey to taste.... Here is a little science on Ginger attached - by Kerry Bone. Thyme is a potent antimicrobial - great for sore throats too. http://www.mediherb.com.au/media/276911/prno52.pdf

08.01.2022 MENOPAUSE and the power of a label... I write today, in reference to a dear friend and much respected colleague Dr Elizabeth Steels - Clinical Biochemist. Beth recently completed a 2 year clinical trial on a natural supplement to manage menopause symptoms. I attended a seminar on the weekend where Beth, instead of presenting the outcomes of the trial, spoke of her observations about the perception of menopause. Beth pointed out, we are one of the only female species to liv...Continue reading

06.01.2022 RED MEAT... IS THERE REALLY A CANCER RISK? It's been on my mind for some time now - red and processed meats increase our risk of bowel cancer. I've had a tendency to promote red meat in one's diet. Okay, so not all of us will get lung cancer from smoking, and we won't all end up with bowel cancer from eating meat, however I choose to take these recommendations on board. Cancer is something I'd actively like to practice avoiding. Healthy regards to all Jess http://wcrf.org//red-meat-and-bowel-cancer-risk-how-strong

06.01.2022 INFLUENZA VACCINE... Here's what I did Almost 1 year ago I posted about my recent experience with influenza and the fact that I remained on the fence about whether or not I should have the vaccine. About 10 weeks later I developed an acute onset Pneumonia and Pleurisy - yes back into hospital with my temperature this time at 42 degrees... An adult with a temperature this high is at serious risk of permanent disability. I will leave it you to you imagine how horrendously il...l I was. I was bed-ridden for 2 weeks (initially unresponsive to the first 2 antibiotic scripts). It took 10 weeks to feel myself again. I lost 6kg off my already lean frame - when I finally got back outside, people were shocked by my debilitated physical appearance. This unusual bout of serious illness certainly correlated with a large amount of stress in my life at the time - separating from a business agreement that unsuspectingly turned personal. I've done quite a bit of emotional work to let go of all that and I'm back to being strong and healthy heading into winter. I've spoken to a huge variety of people about flu vaccination, hearing their experiences and opinions. The 3 top reasons people refuse the vac: 1. They don't need it 2. It doesn't work 3. I would never put that stuff into my body The 3 top reasons people do use the vac: 1. My work environment puts me at risk and they provide it free 2. My health has been noticeably better through winter since having the vaccination 3. Have experienced serious influenza personally or have known someone who has I am having the vaccine tomorrow. Why? Because no one has been able to give me solid evidence proving to me that having the flu vac is going to put me in a worse position than I would be without it. Yes, state of mind is important, so is taking some base nutrients for protection like zinc, vitamin C and chinese mushroom. I however, am not prepared to risk permanent damage to my lungs if this happens again - I will look foolish. I have a very young family and I have a lot of healthy living left to do. A flu shot won't disable me like influenza will. I can handle the common cold or gastro - what ever comes home with the kids - it's part of having a family. One thing I will make clear is, flu vaccine is a personal decision for everyone. There will always be the avid promoters and the harsh critics. I have made my decision based on personal experience with the disease. It's easy to have a negative opinion without personal experience. I think if all the horrible diseases of the past were to once again become prevalent like polio, diphtheria, mumps, tetanus and whooping cough, people would be less resistant about vaccinating themselves and their children. Vaccinations are the reason we are no longer living with death & disability from these, once prevalent conditions. Good health to you all. Jess

05.01.2022 Gluten Free - Here to stay or Celebrity trend? ABCs Landline ran a story from the farmers perspective and raised a few very interesting points about genetic modification of grains. Finally we are seeing some medical recognition for Gluten Intolerance in the absence of Coeliac Disease. Yes, I agree many people feel better in the tummy on a gluten free diet but in Glutens defence, are we pointing the finger at the wrong substance? Jan Muir, Monash University is perhaps ...correctly suggesting that it may in fact be FRUCTANS causing the IBS symptoms, not the gluten. I am particularly interested in this proposal because the IgG food intolerance testing we use here in clinic separates gluten from the grain itself... In most cases its not the gluten - its the wheat or rye. We dont test for fructans but perhaps its something worth considering? 05.01.2022 THERE IS A NEED FOR BOTH... What I like about this gentleman's statement is he acknowledges the requirement for medicine, he also emphasises the important role of natural medicines in health. We are seeing an increase in learning problems, behavioral and concentration issues in our kids... it's frightening to see medical prescriptions being handed out for long term management. From experience in my own clinic, I know that diet has a huge impact in the management of these conditions. It saddens me further that among the parents who'll do anything, there are still some who choose to medicate and dismiss dietary changes due to impracticality. A long-term diet change is difficult at first... everything is difficult at first. The long term benefits however, are indisputable. Try not to choose one form of medicine over another, they both play an important role. Any good practitioner, natural or medical should refer on when there is a need. Wishing you all good health. Jess

05.01.2022 Food is NOT Medicine... Food is food and medicine is medicine. The point Im making here is most of us dont need to take vitamins and minerals every day unless we are unwell or suffering a chronic, ongoing condition. This is a huge debate across many health industries. As a practitioner who prescribes natural medicines, here is my spin on this well-debated topic.... Those who promote the daily need for supplements are usually the ones gaining from it financially - and its true, many of the retail supplements arent much more than a drain on your pocket. There are definitely quality issues when it comes to active constituents in retail vitamins, minerals and herbal medicines. Clever labeling & marketing techniques are designed to attract the consumer - not so much the product quality inside. Here its important to point out that the Practitioner only supplements I use, have a very different quality rating to retail. Although Im a skeptic of my own industry, the quality of the products I prescribe have much more stringent testing and production standards than those sold in supermarkets and health food stores. I use my supplements as medicines to treat people when they are unwell. Rarely do I recommend ongoing, long-term use of supplements after they become well. Cases where long term use is warranted are - endurance athletes, autoimmune disease, dietary inadequacies (eg. vegetarian) and mental health. Again, I do not recommend self prescribing retail products for these conditions. You will find many of our foods are now fortified with nutrients where there is an apparent national deficiency, this helps cover the debate about our soils being depleted. I dont think the depleted soil is an excuse to promote daily use of supplements. So... what do I take each morning?? It tends to vary depending on what my life is demanding at the time. I generally need to supplement with Iron, even with red meat I cannot keep my ferritin up. I feel better when I take magnesium - it helps my digestion, muscle tension and sleep. However I take this 2-3 x week as I feel the need. Choose the information youre hearing wisely. The Choice website is always pretty fair. I also enjoy the comedy relief of ABCs The Checkout - for consumer rights! http://www.choice.com.au//medicines/multivitamins-2012.aspx

05.01.2022 SHOULD WE EAT RED MEAT or any meat? It's a topic receiving quite a bit of attention, especially after the World Health Organisation (WHO) released their findings listing processed meat as a carcinogen directly linked to bowel cancer. Fresh red meat was also in the firing line, WHO stating over 500g consumption per week also increases our cancer risk. The answer to this question isn't simple in my opinion. Red meat contains essential nutrients that we cannot obtain from other...Continue reading

02.01.2022 A CLOSER LOOK AT FARMED SALMON and our demand for industrial agriculture... Years ago a colleague visited a large salmon farm in Tasmania. He told me what he saw and Ive eaten very little farmed Salmon since. Now I understand we live in a world heavily populated with hungry humans and the need for industrial agriculture is unavoidable. Its easy to be righteous and idealistic about quality food however, our demands for fresh produce to be available every day, all year rou...nd in supermarkets, are unrealistic if we then expect quality to accompany our demand for fresh food. I was once sat down to dinner next to a Food Scientist. She rolled her eyes when I said I was a Naturopath... then sarcastically said I suppose you recommend EVERYTHING has to be organic. Slightly offended by the stereotyping I explained my less-than-righteous views and level-headed understanding of world agriculture. Four Corners recently aired a program on Salmon farming in Australia. They arent technically doing anything wrong by Australian standards, however it seems Australian standards are a bit below the rest of the world in this area of farming. Salmon isnt the only tampered-with food we consume, most fresh produce is tampered with. Why? To make it grow quicker, last longer, look appealing, sell quicker and so we as consumers are not acutely poisoned by pathogens / dangerous contaminants. WE have created this mass agriculture culture... US! Unless we all go back to sustainable living yes eating solely out of our own gardens and harvesting livestock (if thats your thing) then yes, the super mega companies will continue to provide convenience food - uncontaminated, speed-grown fresh produce whenever you want it. Please, if you support cheap, mass produced food, understand you get what you pay for. This is why I support local farmers and reputable Certified Organic Produce I want my money to help build up sustainable farming. It is important to me, to know exactly what Im putting into my body. Price on the contrary, is definitely a bit higher. Does money dictate your fresh produce choices? In my industry I have learned a great deal about hidden food additives but I also take the time to understand why they are present in the first place. If you want fresh whole milk, buy a cow. If you want real free range eggs, get chickens and feed them well. If you want cheap, quality vegetables, grow them yourself and replenish your soil with nutrients. Perhaps avoid farmed salmon (see the link)... if we care about food quality, its important we invest our time into sourcing our food mindfully. http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/stories/2016//31/4564542.htm

02.01.2022 The many stories behind ECZEMA Gee what an amazing organ the skin is... yes thats right, its an organ and any sign of irritation on its surface is often a result of something happening on the inside (but thats not always the case). I have many interesting stories about treating eczema. By the time people reach me, theyve usually identified if theres an environmental / topical cause ie washing powder, pollen, seasonal, pets etc.. The ones I see are the more persistent u...nusual types. The most common presentations are food intolerance and with a bit of digestive repair and dietary change we generally see improvements. Life-long eczema can take much longer. Eventually the skin cells change and the damage can become irreversible or take much longer to repair. Here are a couple of great experiences Ive had successfully treating eczema --> A little 12 month old bub with bleeding eczema, wrapped in bandages and terrible screaming at bath time because her skin was so inflamed. We eventually had a complete break through with sub-lingual vitamin B12. Its been shown to help breakdown nitric oxide in the skin cells that concentrate eczema/dermatitis. She was terrified of Australian men, shed been verbally abused in the street by men and was very anxious about leaving the house. We used some herbs to address the anxiety and identified with this cause... and her eczema cleared up! And lastly... a lady in her 50s with eczema on her hands for over 30 years. Shed adopted out a child in her teens - it wasnt until her daughter contacted her 30 years later, that the eczema resolved itself.

02.01.2022 Prostate Cancer: a friend was diagnosed this year with 5 contained tumours in the prostate - 1 larger tumour of main concern. Urologist after the CT was 99% sure of prostate cancer. Instead of rushing into the surgery full of fear, he took a couple of months to re-assess his life. A major dietary overhaul - esp portion size, regular exercise, green juicing, plenty of filtered water, some supplements - mainly quality turmeric and broccoli sprout + green tea. 2mths later he de...cided on a biopsy first before any surgery. The urologist nearly fell off his chair. Only 1 tumour remained which had halved in size. The urologist said "we must have made a mistake with the first scan.." With pen in hand he asked "What was it again, that you said you were taking?" Thankfully no surgery or medical action required. Yet another cancer success with diet and lifestyle intervention - and yet another record of unexplained improvement on the medical records. See more

02.01.2022 When I'm faced with challenges and ungracious people, the Serenity Prayer (in short) always reminds me to take a deep breath and move forward with grace and poise -->

02.01.2022 NATURAL MEDICINE INDUSTRY.. what a shamble. Yesterday I attended a conference for Leaders in Weight Loss recommended by my professional association. I was hoping for an up-to-date public health insight to obesity management in this country. As a private consultant, I think it is important to be well informed about all the weight loss info people are seeking - good, bad or down-right waste of time. To keep this short, I found myself in a room where I probably didnt belong.... Those attending were involved mostly in an online course to become an accredited Weight Loss Consultant. There were lots of high-fives, pats on the back and WOW stories of inspiration and over-coming hardship. Dont get me wrong, there is certainly a place for these people, and they are certainly doing more good than harm... but where does that leave me and my so-called industry? It was disappointing that my Association lead me to an event that far from represents my clinical work as a professional health consultant. It made me realise how difficult it is for the public determine who is the right professional to clinically assist with losing weight. There is nothing that clearly separates me as a health professional, from those who have simply done an online motivational course. The term accredited is very loosely thrown around - it means nothing. Always look for professional registration and health fund provider recognition when seeking out a private health consultant. Higher levels of education are required to have these registrations. All the best Jess

01.01.2022 CAN EMOTIONS CAUSE ILLNESS?? If I hear something once, I take note. If I hear it over and over I sit up and listen more intently. I risk sounding like a hippy here but yes, emotions and thoughts are huge drivers for biological presentations and I am seeing examples of this every week in my clinic. Author Reanne Goes "Surviving Suicide" wrote about life after her brother took his own life in her home. In the years following, Reannes health diminished - no practitioner incl...uding myself, could work out what was happening. Her liver function tests looked like those of an alcoholic (not the case). Once a year shed be hospitalised with an infection on her face that no amount of IV antibiotics could fix and no amount of exercise or healthy diet could shift her weight. It wasnt until Reanne invested in the Morter Health System that she started to see dramatic improvements in her health. Morter or B.E.S.T therapy uses kinesiology (muscle testing) to help the patient identify with emotional blockages. Another similar method is The Body Talk System. I am very impressed by the results I see in patients who have been brave enough to try this. When I sense there are emotions getting in the way of people getting well, I now suggest one of these types of therapies - most people are hesitant for 2 reasons... 1. it sounds like hippie hoo ha 2. the idea of addressing emotional issues is too overwhelming Reanne works with surgeons in hospitals - she is far from alternative! She is now a practitioner and treats people in her spare time in Brisbane - morterhealth.com Here is some more info on Body Talk below. We all have emotions, not all of us can let go of negativity. Few of us are aware of the impact that is having on our health. Warm regards, Jess http://www.bodytalksystem.com/learn/bodytalk/
