23.01.2022 This beautiful photo was taken by Andrew Metter, during a Yatra in the Bay of Fires in Tasmania led by Ronny Hickel, from Yatra Australia, and @jesshuon earlier this year. To learn more about Jess's upcoming retreats and sits, head to her website www.jesshuon.com, where you can sign up for her newsletter as well. Here is an excerpt on Yatras from Ronny's website: "Bushwalking in Mindfulness... The Sanskrit word yatra means journey, path of life or pilgrimage. A yatra is a unique journey providing a special environment to engage with and enquire deeply into the potential of human awakening. In the company of like-minded people, a yatra takes place within some of the most pristine landscapes of our natural world."

16.01.2022 In this period of lock-down Im reflecting on past artistic, therapeutic and spiritual (have always found that word weird, if you have another one please let me know!) influences. Many of you know my seventeen-year-old story, when I hit my own dead-end and began practicing meditation. This time of my life feels online with the theme explored over our last three Sunday sits; renunciation. This could be simply put as something that happens when you can no longer go on in the m...Continue reading

13.01.2022 "Ive been reflecting too on my work with rollercoaster theatre (where I worked for around ten years) and what I was trying to get at. I think it was something to do with allowing the flow of an unrestricted mind. Sarah Sutherland (artistic director of the company) and I employed meditation techniques (entering the quiet well together) before engaging in open conversations, a surrealist technique, informed by Freud. We would keep the conversation between ourselves and the act...ors running, without pausing. A communal riffing, digging deeper than the cliché. Unusual lived experience, mysterious insight, and intimate perception began to arise. Youd feel a sense of congruency in the actors' lining up when we hit the right phrases - a certain potency in presence, word, and movement. We looked out for this. These words were part of the monologues we devised together. On stage, the unique voice of each individual blew out stereotypes around disability. Cut through apprehensions around difference'. The bolts, locking down self, opened; the interesting stuff of desire, loneliness, and dreams flooded through. In this un-self-conscious release, we sometimes reached this luminous rhythmic outpouring of words and free movement. It bursts my heart open when I think of entering this slip stream as a unified ensemble. The work could be hard, and tiring, but when we hit the jack-pot together, there was energy and power, not to mention hilarity." In her work with the rollercoaster ensemble Jess explored the way meditative processes can support unique expression. This theme was looked into last Saturday in the online day retreat 'Two Streams'. Stay tuned for further talks coming on this here, on Jess's instagram and her newsletter, sign up on www.jesshuon.com All photos courtesy of 'realeyes' production Top left: rollercoaster actor Cameron Stanly, right photo: rollercoaster actress Melissa Slavierosecond rollercoaster, bottom center photo: this rollercoaster ensemble

04.01.2022 Here are some pictures of the collaboration between Te Toa Matoa theatre (Kiribati), Rollercoaster Theatre (Melbourne) and Jess. Words from Jess below. In this phase of lock down, Im still going through memories and trawling through and archiving past work; drafts of long ago written stories, the unpublished manuscript of my first book (salt encrusted!), as well as the different projects worked on with Rollercoaster' theatre. This project, pictured above, a collaboration b...etween Rollercoaster theatre (Melbourne) and Te Toa Matoa theatre company (Kiribati), was one of all our favourites! We were utilising the meditative and dramatic methods wed developed to assist in empowering the voices of Te Toa Matoa theatre company, who were advocating for the rights of people with disabilities (backed by the UN) in Kiribati and raising awareness of those rights within their communities. We made work, spoken half in English, half in Glibertese, (Austronesian language spoken in the Kiribati). I remember the empathy, humour and kindness stirring between our different companies; many raw stories swapped. We explored differences as well as the crossovers. Guttural understandings of what it is to be hurled outside of the norm, as well as mutual experiences of creative burn, were boldly expressed. I was too shy to go outside/Didnt want to be seen/didnt like the way people looked at me/And I began to brew/A fire of poetry in me. The Te Toa Matoa ensemble often walked together into the rehearsal room in one snake-like formation, hands on each-others backs, sitting each other down. Knowing how to move as one body. They knew (without looking) where each other was situated in the room. A number of the actors in the Te Toa Matoa ensemble were visually impaired. We learnt a lot from the strength, sensitivity and unity in the Te Toa Matoa ensemble. One visually impaired man earned his living riding a bike through feeling the texture of gravel under his tyres to pick up coconuts to sell. One crash only. Ive been recalling the sound of their singing lately. I remember the way it was belted it out; fresh bright sound, cracking open like a waterfall, in our urban red bricked theatre. I facilitated these workshops with Sarah Sutherland and Carolyn Bock. Rollercoaster ensemble members: were Michael Buxton, Eli Jones-Resnik, Erin Pocervina, Melissa Slaviero, Cameron Stanley and Andrew Tresidder Te Toa Matoa ensemble members were: Kaburoro Baiteke, Tekamangu Bwauira, Ren Itonga, Bauraoi Keakea, Riano Kobebe, Tewaaki Konititan, Baia Namoriki, Regina Ritiata, Meekabwa Taberannang, Bobu Tabuia, Teuai Tainimaki, Kantaake Teingira and Tabwaia Tiimi Production Manager: Rachel Edward The project was hosted by Disability organisation of Australia, using arts as a an Advocacy and Education Tool project.
