23.01.2022 The Alone Together Project: The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted everybody, but we know that its impact has been worse for older people who live independently. We also know that if you come from other countries or if English is your second language your social networks can sometimes be further away and physical distancing and lockdowns can make you feel isolated. As part of the Alone Together project we are inviting older people from culturally and linguistic diverse communit...ies to talk with one of our research team. We would like to know how COVID-19 has impacted your everyday life; how you are coping with these changes; and what type of services have been useful. These conversations will help understand how to provide better support to older people from these communities in the future. Interested in taking part? We also acknowledge the disproportionately large number of Indigenous Australia in custody, and far too many Indigenous deaths in custody here in Australia. 14.01.2022 A few hours ago we concluded our AGM. More content from the evening will be posted in the coming days, but in the meantime here is a short update and below is a post from the new JCCV President, Dr Andre Oboler. The AGM was a celebration of Jennifer Huppert's six years of community leadership, and of the contribution to the community of our award recipients, the 2020 Sir General John Monash Award recipient Grahame Leonard, and the 2020 Sylvia Gelman Young Leadership Award rec...ipient Elana Forbes. The new JCCV Executive that was elected was: Dr Andre Oboler (President), Frank Greenstein (Vice President) Hannah Greenberg (Treasurer) and ordinary executive members: Doron Abramovici, Rabbi Gabi Kaltmann, Michelle Meyer, Frances Prince, and Howard Sachs. Well done to all who stood in the election. A special thanks to Sam who ran the technical side of the evening, to Judy and Hilary who looked after the logistics, to Belle who served as our returning officer and to Jennifer and the out-going executive for all their efforts over the last few years. With a number of executive members retiring at this AGM, the new executive is an evenly split between continuing members and new members. It represents both renewal and stability. Our new members come with a wealth of experience in other parts of the community. Our continuing members bring a depth of knowledge of the organisation and the community. We're ready for the challenges ahead. We look forward to working with you as we build a strong, safe, supportive and inclusive Jewish community and play our part positively contributing to Victoria, Australia, and the Jewish world. We look forward to continuing our work in partnership with Zionism Victoria in strengthening connections with Israel. As a constituent member of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry - ECAJ we look forward to continuing our work together with the other Australian Jewish communal roof bodies tackling national and international issues of interest to the Australian Jewish community. As Rabbi Hillel said, "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And being only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?" We are the voice speaking up for the Victorian Jewish Community. We speak up as a community in support of other who need support, from our Indigenous Australian to our newest communities, we speak up for diverse and inclusive Victoria. We speak up we act, and do so whenever the need arises. Join us in the journey ahead.
13.01.2022 Many Jewish families who fled or were expelled from countries in the Middle East and North Africa are unable to say Kaddish in the presence of their departed family members because the cemeteries where they are buried are inaccessible to them. This Shabbat Jewish communities around the world will join these families in a global initiative to say Kaddish for their families. The Kaddish Initiative https://www.kaddishinitiative.com/ marks the Shabbat that is closest to November 30th, the day designated by Israel to commemorate the Departure and Expulsion of around 850,000 Jews from Arab Countries and Iran last century. The JCCV, representing the Victorian Jewish Community, joins with other Jewish communities from around the world in supporting the Kaddish Initiative."
