23.01.2022 JobCo NDIS Mentor, Matt, has been collaborating with Jonathan, a client of JobCo, to bring some joy in lock-down through the creation of music: Jonathan initially showed a keen interest in R&B music on our first session together, and when I mentioned to him that I myself was a musician, and that we could create music together, he jumped at the idea. Jonathan has been undertaking singing lessons for quite a long time now and has finally found a way to put his talents to use. ...We found an instrumental song on YouTube that has a Chris Brown vibe to it and Jonathan wrote lyrics based on how good he has been feeling lately. Jonathans happiness is the central theme to the song and the positivity that is exuded throughout is genuine and authentic. Jonathan now has plans to record an entire album worth of music. And if you believe you’re failing to meet these perceived, unrealistic expectations it can be the cause of great distress. In a recent interview with Triple J, Costa shares his thoughts on the benefits of gardening. For those of us who dont have the money, time or space, Costa says people can still find benefit in taking care of indoor plants: Its all about biophilia and that connection to nature. 10.01.2022 The idea of exercising in public places can trigger anxiety in people who suffer from a negative body image. This is what it was like for Rachel, who until recently, was held back from exercising because of the way she felt about herself. When Rachel found body positive people on social media and sought help from a body positive personal trainer, she learned to overcome her anxiety around exercise: For the first month or so, Rebecca could barely finish the warmup. But before COVID-19 restrictions, she was attending the group four times a week to run, dance, do yoga, boxing, strength training you name it, she did it. 10.01.2022 Nobody likes rejection but it happens to us all at some point, so we need to find ways of dealing with it. In an ABC Life article, three Australians share how they managed their career rejections by seeing them as an opportunity for growth. One of the Australians, Ben Darslow, considered his rejection as a form of tough love. When the stand-up comedian was given a negative review of his Adelaide Fringe show performance in 2010, he listened to the feedback and learnt what he... needed to improve his act which has proved advantageous for his career: Ben has since gone from strength to strength as a comedian, performing stand-up in festival, club and corporate events and at top comedy clubs in the US, Canada, Malaysia and the UK. The common theme amongst the stories shared was the way each person viewed their rejections as constructive criticisms, which they used to improve their circumstances. According to Professor Dwecks definitions, this is known as having a growth mindset as opposed to a fixed mindset, which observes rejection as a character flaw, rather than an opportunity for improvement. 06.01.2022 Today is International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) day. FASD is a diagnostic term used to describe impacts on the brain and body of individuals prenatally exposed to alcohol. According to the NOFASD Australia, there is no safe amount of alcohol to drink while you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding: There is no safe time, there is no safe amount, and there is no safe type of alcohol. Alcohol can harm a developing fetus at any point during a pregnan...cy, even before the pregnancy is confirmed. As 50% of Australian women experience an unplanned pregnancy, many are prenatally exposed to alcohol before the family becomes aware of the pregnancy. If you could be pregnant, or are planning a pregnancy, health professionals advise that abstinence from alcohol is safest. If you choose to drink alcohol, effective contraception is important to prevent unintentional prenatal alcohol exposure. Alcohol use during pregnancy can increase the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm (early) birth, and SIDS, and can also result in FASD, which is a lifelong disability. Fathers are also advised to abstain from alcohol in the lead up to their partner becoming pregnant as this can also impact the health of the developing fetus. One way to express our appreciation for our fathers this year is by supporting the health and wellbeing of all men and joining campaigns such as Man With A Pram (MWAP) and The Fathering Project: With COVID-19 playing havoc with many physical gatherings this year, the MWAP social campaign organised by Melbourne member and father of three Adam Lust is asking dads to post a photo of themselves plus pusher (and offspring) through...out this week and especially on September 6." The MWAP campaign encourages new fathers to post a photo of themselves and their pram, along with the hashtag #MWAP2020, to show solidarity and broaden community connections for new fathers. Those who contribute may even win a prize. The social media campaign involving The Fathering Project celebrates fathers of all ages, inviting people to share their best dad moments on Facebook and Instagram sites with the hashtag #bestdadmoments: The website has already published some famous #bestdadmoments videos from the likes of Australian cricketer Justin Langer, Olympic swimmer Duncan Armstrong, Labor Party leader Anthony Albanese, MP Ken Wyatt and comedian Hamish Blake.
