25.01.2022 How exciting is this?! Thanks to the tireless work of Mat Howard, Darcy Byrne and Councillor Anna York - Inner West Council - Inner West Council has now agreed to establish a Pride Centre at Newtown Town Hall. It will give the LGBTIQ+ community a place to celebrate and support one another, where community groups can meet, hold events, and run life saving programs.
25.01.2022 My brilliant bestie Rose Jackson has launched a podcast! This is the first and only podcast that I'll be tuning in to, because it's THAT GOOD If you ever thought State Politics/politics was boring and had nothing to do with you, let this podcast change your mind!
24.01.2022 Another hand santiser drop off for the residents at Cardinal Freeman Ashfield. Fiona and Noreen spoke to me about the importance of strong COVID safety measures and how they are helping to combat feelings of social isolation experienced by many seniors during this pandemic.
23.01.2022 How exciting is this?! Marrickville Town Hall will become a live music and performing arts centre Thank you to Darcy Byrne for your tireless work to make this happen despite the disappointing opposition faced. COVID-19 has further proved the importance of supporting artists in our community, while also supporting the many multicultural communities that make up the Inner West. ... Couldnt be more excited by this!
22.01.2022 COVID-19 has shown how now more than ever, we must invest in our local hospitals and health services For years, Canterbury Hospital staff and our community, have been crying out for a hospital upgrade and expansion. This will only get worse with an ever increasing population in the area. The treasurer must take the opportunity of this next budget to upgrade and expand canterbury hospital.... Contact my office to sign the petition to upgrade and expand Canterbury Hospital!
21.01.2022 John Barilaro and the NSW Nationals have their priorities totally wrong They won't stand up to the Liberals on issues that really matter, but will stand up to them when they don't want to protect koalas. From fighting for jobs in the regions, under threat due to this Liberal Government, to taking real action on climate change - John Barilaro and the NSW Nationals are silent.... But when it comes to protecting our koalas for future generations, they threaten to bring down the Government. If the Nationals really want to represent regional communities, how about they start by putting the priorities of regional communities first ALL the time, not just when it suits their political game playing.
20.01.2022 I'm so excited that Sydney Airport has committed to develop a connection for cyclists and pedestrians from Alexandra Canal to the T2/T3 terminals. This section of active transport infrastructure is a key link between the Inner West and Eastern Suburbs bike routes, and will also give airport employees and passengers the opportunity to ride to the airport. Incredibly proud to have worked with local cycling advocates including Bike Marrickville, Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club and Bic...ycle NSW to make this happen. Now to get the final link from T2/T3 to the Eastern Suburbs network. We'll keep the pressure on Andrew Constance MP to make this happen.
19.01.2022 Some of the first people impacted by COVID-19 restrictions have been our performing artists, and these will be some of the last people who are able to reopen. Our performing arts sector is in crisis. We must Save Our Stages NSW. Well prior to COVID-19 restrictions, our stages were being over restricted and managed out of business by a Government who has completely and utterly failed to protect our performing arts sector.... We need 20,000 signatures to get a petition in front of parliament and force a debate on this issue. Sign the petition > http://bit.ly/Petition-SOSNSW
19.01.2022 Many families across the inner west are facing a tough Christmas and I am collecting donations of new, unwrapped toys to help make sure 2020 ends on a high for every child. Please drop off donations to my office or at one of the mobile collection points over the next few weeks. Together, we can make a real difference for local kids and families. This year, all donations will be made to AbSec the peak organisation supporting Aboriginal children, young people, families and co...mmunities impacted by the child protection system. 19.01.2022 One year ago today, since we decriminalised Abortion in New South Wales! It wasnt an easy journey and we stand on the shoulders of generations of women who have fought for this right. I am still so proud to have worked with Penny Sharpe MLC, Alex Greenwich and Trevor Khan in making this bill law.
18.01.2022 Join the fight to put an end to modern slavery in NSW, by signing this petition! You can sign and circulate the petition here - https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au//Pages/ePetition-details
18.01.2022 #BREAKING John Barilaro and the NSW Nationals have effectively joined the crossbench in NSW Parliament in a bid to stop koala protections. In the middle of a global health and financial pandemic the NSW Government has been plunged into further dysfunction and chaos. They will no longer support Government legislation and will not surrender their ministerial portfolios.
18.01.2022 Good. Even considering blowing up hard rock beneath peoples homes was ever considered says everything about this Government.
17.01.2022 There is now a bill before parliament that would require food delivery companies across our state to provide delivery riders with critical safety equipment. When these workers go to work, they must be provided with the basic equipment that is required to keep both themselves and others safe on the road. Things like flashing lights, high-vis vests and helmets shouldn't be left to the lowest paid workers in our workforce to provide, they should be provided by these multi-nation...al businesses. Now more than ever, as we see massive increases in the numbers of food delivery riders on our roads, the Government must act. They must act to protect these workers and others on our roads, by supporting this bill before parliament. I'm so proud to be working with the Daniel Mookhey MLC and the Transport Workers Union - TWU to make this happen.
17.01.2022 When parents send their kids off to school, they expect that the Government hasn't let safety measures fall into disrepair I have obtained damning documents that reveal that a third of school flashing lights at NSW schools will reach their end of life in the next three years. 44% of of 40km/hr school zone markings on roads across the state also require maintenance..... Andrew Constance MP must commit the $13 million per year its own documents show is required to keep our kids safe.
17.01.2022 As if John Barilaro's blow up could get anymore appalling, it has now been revealed that the ONLY stakeholder whos concerns were raised with the Minister was a developer Jeff McCloy was the only stakeholder to raise concerns about NSW koala policy, that was sent by the Premier to the Minister responsible. This is the same developer who is a self described "walking ATM" for politicians.... John Barilaro doesn't care about koalas or our regions, all he cares about is his big developer mates.
17.01.2022 You have got to be kidding me John Barilaro is threatening to bring down his own Government in an attempt to stop support for Koalas across our state. While the deputy premier is busy playing politics, our koalas are dying out.... John Barilaro must be stopped, before our koala population is totally decimated.
16.01.2022 Yesterday, Jihad Dib MP and I spent the morning volunteering at Foodbank NSW & ACT run by the tireless John Robertson. It was so wonderful to lend and hand and get to chat to so many incredible volunteers. Food bank are working every day to end hunger in Australia. Check them out, if youd like to lend a hand!
14.01.2022 So let's get this straight. This man is the Deputy Premier of our state and had no clue at midday today, how many COVID cases had been identified in NSW. In the middle of a global health and financial pandemic that has left thousands in out state jobless and hundreds dead across the country - John Barilaro was too busy in meetings plotting to bring down his own Government, than focusing on COVID-19. People's lives are at risk, and all John Barilaro can think about is winding ...back koala protections and his own career. Gladys Berejiklian must immediately confirm for the people of NSW whether we have a functioning government, or not.
14.01.2022 COVID-19 has resulted in countless more workers turning to food delivery work across our state These workers are overworked, underpaid and left out to dry by food delivery companies who fail to provide the most basic of safety equiptment to their workers. Equipment like helmets, high vis vests and flashing lights.... Today, Daniel Mookhey MLC and I joined with the Transport Workers Union - TWU to introduce a bill that would force food delivery companies to provide their couriers with critical safety and personal protective equipment.
14.01.2022 The pandemic has been a strange and scary time for kids. Lindy and Vivi and the team at Connect Marrickville SaCC have been supporting kids across the inner west through virtual storytelling time, the community pantry and delivering food parcels to those in our community doing it tough. Was great to pop by and drop off some handsantiser and to hear all about how they are looking out for the Inner West.
13.01.2022 I dont usually respond to these sort of ridiculous attacks by the Greens, but in this instance the assertions are so blatantly incorrect and hypocritical, that I must. The Greens should be encouraging people across our state to get out of their cars and onto their bikes, whether thats in the city or the country. Its good for the environment and its good for our communities. Abigail claims that this bill will see tracks ripped up and sold-off to developers. This is noth...ing short of completely false. Section 229 of the bill, is literally titled land to remain in public ownership. If Abigail holds concerns regarding this section, she should do as Labor has and engage with the Government to have these concerns addressed. Instead, Abigail has resorted to false scaremongering at the expense of immediate and long term jobs in a region that has been hit by bushfires, floods and now the decimation of the tourism industry as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is blatantly false scaremongering at the expense of encouraging more people to get out of their cars and onto their bikes. The Greens cannot claim to be supportive of active transport and encouraging modal shift, if they are willing to mislead and deceive based on short term political gain at the expense of bike riders and our regions. You dont just have to take my word for it - you can read the bill here https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au///3787/First%20Print.pdf
13.01.2022 I'm so proud to be able to support some of the invaluable local groups and organisations working to support our community through this difficult year. This grassroots funding will directly benefit our community, delivering new infrastructure and paying for much-needed improvements, right when we need it most. I am so grateful to all the local residents who participated in my community survey and to all the organisations that applied for this year’s grant round.... Congratulations to AbSec, The Rev Bill Crews Foundation, Dulwich Hill Public School Dulwich Hill Public School - P&C, Ferncourt Public School Ferncourt Public School - Parent and Citizens Association, Flight Path Theatre, Greek Orthodox Community Occasional Care Centre, Haberfield Association, The Infants' Home, Marrickville District Lawn Tennis Club, Marrickville West Public School Marrickville West Public School, St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church St Nicholas Marrickville Youth, Petersham Public School, River Canoe Club, St John Ambulance Australia, Wests AFL Juniors, Yeo Park Infants School Yeo Park Infants Parents and Citizens
13.01.2022 Meet my beautiful doggo Lucy For as long as Ive been involved in politics, Lucy has been by my side. This National Dogs in Politics Day I want to give a special shoutout to Lucy.... Here is her in her favourite place, walking past Marrickville Golf Course on the Cooks River (which Darcy Byrne saved at council last night) I couldnt ask for a more loyal, loving and cuddly best friend. I love you Lucy

12.01.2022 When our councils were forcibly amalgamated, the Liberal Government promised these councils that they would be supported. How were they supported? With $100 million in grants to councils in almost entirely Liberal and National party held seats prior to the 2019 State election.... This is nothing more than another rort from a rotten Government.
09.01.2022 The Government must fast track and expand support for Sydney's Nightlife & Live Venues - John Graham is absolutely right. Our concern is that the Government's strategy is an old set of answers to an old set of problems. COVID-19 has had an immeasurable impact on our entertainment and hospitality workers, and this must be addressed by supporting outdoor dining and performance and later trading.
09.01.2022 An estimated 240,000 women aged 55 or over are at-risk of homelessness nationally. As are another 165,000 women aged 45 to 55 years. The Government must take action to address this silent issue.... This must end.
08.01.2022 Don't worry, we aren't launching a The Beatles cover band - we are however excited to announce the upgrade of Dulwich Hill Public Schools pedestrian crossing! This follows so many parents and educators making submissions regarding safety at Dulwich Hill Public School in my recent school safety survey. Parents like Melinda and School Principal, Linda have long been arguing for action to be taken to make travelling to and from the school safer to all.... I'm so excited that Clr Mark Drury - Inner West Council - Labor and Inner West Council have taken the steps to upgrade this pedestrian crossing and make it safer for all. Special shoutout also to Colin who lives across from this crossing and who has done so much work (including giving up a parking spot outside his home!) to make this happen.
08.01.2022 I am so pleased that this week, the Inner West Council Labor team saved Marrickville Golf course from absurd attempts to halve the size of the course. I know personally the important role that Marrickville Golf course plays in our community, as one of the most cherished spaces in the Inner West, particularly by local dog walkers. It also works with a local bushcare volunteers to protect and champion the brilliant bio-diversity of our area.
07.01.2022 Reverse Garbage and THE BOWER Reuse & Repair Centre are an Inner West institutions, and I am so incredibly excited that Darcy Byrne has taken this action to keep them in the Inner West. These wonderful local groups are leading the charge across our state to keep items out of landfill, and connect them with people who are able to re-use them. Every single day, these organisations are giving things a new lease on life, and I'm so excited that they'll have a brand new space to go along with it.
07.01.2022 We were out at Hurlstone Park Station this morning giving out free hand sanitiser! Linda Burney, Sophie Cotsis and I are fighting hard to make sure that everyone in our community has access to everything we need to keep everyone safe. There are some more bottles in my office if you'd like to pop by and pick one up.
06.01.2022 John Barilaro thinks we shouldnt care about Koalas because we live in the Inner West When I asked him in question time why on earth he was trying to weaken koala laws - he claimed our community couldn't care because we're the Inner West. Well I have one message for John Barilaro - we do care, and I will not stop fighting to protect koalas across our state.... The Deputy Premier has embarrassed himself and embarrased his government, all in his quest to stop koalas from being protected. Meanwhile, thousands in NSW are still struggling through this time of crisis. He should resign.
06.01.2022 Tomorrow School Strike 4 Climate will be joining many across our community in hosting actions in towns, suburbs, schools, and workplaces across Australia. These brilliant young activists are demanding action from their Government to address climate change. The Gladys Berejiklian and Scott Morrison (ScoMo) Government's must heed their call.... To find out more info about tomorrows action - head to: https://www.schoolstrike4climate.com/buildourfuture
05.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE Flashing lights at school zones across NSW will fail unless the NSW Government urgently commits $13 million a year in maintenance funding, damning documents obtained by the NSW Labor Opposition reveal. A third of all school flashing lights around NSW schools will reach the end of life before 2023 and 44% of 40 km/hr school zone markings on roads across the State already require urgent maintenance. In many regions, including the Hunter, Greater Sydney Region a...nd Western NSW, more school zones require maintenance than not, with critical 40km/hr school zone markings reaching their end of life by 2023. Read the release here: https://www.johaylen.com/40km_school_zone_lights_to_stop_fl
05.01.2022 #BREAKING NSW Labor are introducing a Bill to force food delivery companies to provide their workers with critical safety and personal protective equipment. As Covid-19 restrictions continue, food delivery companies are dining out on the fact that we cant. Food delivery companies should provide their riders with personal safety gear such as bicycle helmets, bike lights, reflectors and high-vis vests.
04.01.2022 It's not everyday that you get to meet the musos behind so much of the incredible music being created throughout this state and country! Every single day, artists that we met, including The Preatures, KLP, Jonathan Zwartz Music, Karma County and Body Type are producing music that doesn't just give us music to dance to, but that defines our state and country. There is so much more that this Government must do to support artists across our state, especially in this time of such... crisis. To add your voice to the call for this Government to intervene to support our artists. Sign the petition > http://bit.ly/Petition-SOSNSW Shoutout to Tim Crakanthorp MP who has been fighting tooth and nail for artists in his neck of the woods too.
04.01.2022 Summer Hill is set to get a brilliant new community space! The Village Project is set to transform the heart of Summer Hill by converting a longvacant, three-storey warehouse into a green and vibrant community use space for innerwest businesses and residents. Special thanks to Bindi and the whole The Village Project team for providing another wonderful, multipurpose space in the inner west.
03.01.2022 The Beirut explosion has devestated Lebanon, and the Inner West Lebanese community. 190 killed, thousands injured and many more still feeling the effects of this explosion at an already horrible time, as the city deals with COVID-19. I'm so proud of the generosity of the Inner West community, including a $10,000 donation by Inner West Council.... I thank, the Inner West Community for their generosity and leadership and extend my deepest condolences to all those who have been impacted by this terrible explosion, both in Lebanon and in the inner west.
02.01.2022 This issue demands action. This is why we have introduced a bill to force companies to provide their delivery workers with critical safety equipment. When three quarters of delivery workers are worried about being hurt or killed at work, this Government must act.... So long as the Federal Government refuses to take action to ensure these workers are paid a fair wage, it is incumbent on this state government to ensure that these workers are kept safe at work.
01.01.2022 Today is National Walk to School Day! This is the 21st year of National Walk to School Day, and we're encouraging all school children to walk, ride and commute safely to school. Walking and riding to school isn't just great to get your kids active but also encourages greater health, independence and appreciation for our environment
