25.01.2022 How is this vision consistent with your values? This is a great question to test any vision or set of goals. I use it where I have done values work with my clients - so they have a clear understanding about their specific values. ... Once they have clarity about values, it is possible to build a values driven life - we can develop our vision and goals in accordance with our values. This question is a reminder, and enables the coachee to check in. If you are ready for change and think that you could benefit from coaching, get in touch by direct message or via the link in my bio.

25.01.2022 What is one thing that you could do differently? One of the benefits of adopting a growth mindset - or a coaching perspective on the world - is that suddenly nothing is inevitable anymore. Patterns and habits can change, depending on whether they can serve you. This is one question I have been asking my self a lot recently. At a time when the world seems to have shifted on its axis, and a whole lot of old ways are being questioned and challenged, this seems a prime, oppo...rtune time. Sometimes the thing you will do differently will work. Sometimes not. But a spirit of experimentation makes new things possible. So, Id love to hear from you - what is one thing you could do differently?

25.01.2022 What possibilities does your vision open up? Asking this question can help you gain a richer, fuller understanding of your vision. Your answer may start to fill the gaps. ... And provide inspiration to hold on to when the inevitable challenges pop up. If you are interested in exploring whether coaching may be a good fit for you please contact me via direct message. 24.01.2022 Are you aware of how you process time? Being aware of your habits can have a significant impact on how you implement the projects in your life. Do you find yourself caught in the present moment most of the, maybe always late, with a take it as it comes attitude? Or are you future focused, excellent at planning ahead, always punctual? ... Its not an either/or. But awareness can help us adapt our thinking style to suit the moment. For example, if we are always planning ahead, perhaps we need to make space to bring out attention to the present moment.

24.01.2022 A career oriented variation on yesterdays question. Similarly clarifying. What do you want to be said about your career after a long and meaningful work life?

23.01.2022 Who benefits from your vision? One of the key insights I have had from my coach training is the power of coaching questions to really "flesh out" and expand what a vision looks like beyond high level and global statements that dont have much specificity. One question that often comes up is some variation of this question - who benefits from your vision? Other variations - Who will it impact? how will it impact them? ... Asking this question forces us to consider the broad sustainability, ecology and justice of our vision. Maybe you will need information to figure this out, maybe it will be clear. Its an important question. If you are ready for real change in your life and think that you could benefit from coaching please direct message me or get in touch for a transformational conversation.

23.01.2022 What is the change you want to be? A very relevant question in these times. It has been so painful to wash the anguish coming from black America. And to think of our own nations blind spots despite its strengths. Still.... Its also been painful to watch the most powerful man in the world have such a disregard for democracy and key institutions of government including the rule of law - which despite flaws, are our best chance of flourishing as humans. We can feel so small and powerless. This question moves the responsibility from an abstract statement about what change we want to see in the world, to asking what change we want to BE. We cant do everything, but we can do something. Maybe in a particular context, that is a commitment to learn and listen. To provide space for others to speak. A commitment to call out unacceptable behaviour. Or maybe, its going beyond click activism and instead translates to concrete projects of political change - awareness is not enough. Whilst changing culture is important, that must be reflected in institutional change achieved through the political process. But we cant direct our energy unless we have a vision of the change we want to be - as well as the change we want to see. Another related question, is what is in your control? And then, how might that sphere of control expand? Im asking myself these questions today.

23.01.2022 Happy Monday on this first day of winter. I thought that with the first day of a new season, and a new month, in this most challenging and vexing of times, I would take a different approach to my post. Each month I will pick a different theme and post around that theme. It will provide far more opportunity for you to thematically engage with the particular theme for the month. ... This month the theme is around vision. Sometimes, this gets a bit a bad press - the (silly) idea that somehow you can snap your figures, and just because you visualise something, you can get it - being in the firing line. Thats not what this is about. If you think about any project in life, whether it be a small project to bake a cake, or something grand like the achieving a particular change in the world, or having a particular career, it starts with a vision. A problem is identified, and an alternative imagined. The questions I pose this month will all be about the process of visioning effectively. Visions that are sustainable and ecological. Id love your feedback on this proposed approach.

22.01.2022 A profound concept to frame our understanding of COVID times and the choices we can make, and the role coaching can play

22.01.2022 This week's quote is from Simone de Beauvoir, who alongside Woolf, is my intellectual hero. I remember discovering her biography as a teenager and discovering a whole world of alternative possibility. She was a key existentialist philosopher. And although the development of coaching has a number of influences, the style of coaching I do was influenced by Gestalt therapy, which in turn was influenced by existential philosophy. I understand now why I became so interested ...in coaching - it fits so neatly with the existential outlook on life that I held. As a secular feminist and humanist, I believe that life has no inherent meaning except that which we - individually and collectively - create. And that, my friends, is why coaching is so exciting. Whilst we are dealt the cards we receive, we still have to play them. And to this quote in particular, so often we tell ourselves comforting narratives. Coaching aims to shine the light on where there has been darkness. To make us see what we have been blind to, and from that create anew. #changemaker #thrive #liveyourbestlife #minervacoaching #lifestrategy #thrive #attention #deliberateliving #selfleadership #quote #thoughtoftheday #wellbeing #beyourbestself #lifebydesign #selfdevelopment #personalgrowth #camberwell3124 #lifecoachmelbourne #simonedebeauvoir #existentialism #practicalliving

21.01.2022 Sometimes our fears really hold us back and we cant even imagine beyond them. The beauty of this question is that it invites the coachee to just park their fears and gremlins. They are invited to see what might be possible beyond that fear. It can help a person start to imagine what is possible and then start to move towards that... If you are serious about change and think coaching might be of assistance I invite to find out more at www.minervacoaching.net.au (see link in bio) and get in touch. I am looking for a very small number of women who are serious about change for some one on one coaching.

21.01.2022 What is the story you are telling yourself? How is this different from the actual situation? As a coach, trying to understand a coachees belief system is at the very heart of what I do. I seek to understand what it is a coachee is telling themselves about a particular situation and then, through curious yet gentle questioning, identify the gap. This opens up possibility. Opens the way for new visions. ... And so, what is the story you are telling yourself? If you are curious about coaching and think it could benefit you, get in touch by direct message or at [email protected]. You find more about me at www.minervacoaching.net.au

20.01.2022 Write your eulogy. Sometimes when I am with a client and we are working to clarify their key values this is a challenge I throw out. Its very clarifying. ... It requires you to think about what you want the people around you to remember you for. Everything unimportant falls away. What would yours say? If you are serious about change and think that you could benefit from coaching please check out www.minervacoaching.net.au (link in bio) and get in touch. I am looking for a very small number of high achieving women to coach one on one. You must be looking to live your best life and be a change-maker in your workplace and/or community.

20.01.2022 Are you living from your strengths? Every time I have ever done a strengths time survey, my number one strength always comes out as a love of learning. It’s no surprise: there is no quicker way for me to feel miserable than if I feel I am not learning. It feeds me. So much so, that I know that for substantial periods of time I need to devote myself to it - sometimes I incorporate into my holidays - for example intense language and cultural learning overseas. Another example... is going to Canada for my coach training in 2019. I also love taking classes. So what’s a major strength of yours? How can you incorporate it more into your life? Not sure about your strengths? a great place to go is to do to the free VIA strengths survey. It only takes 10 minutes. Go to www.viacharacter.org. A discovery of strengths can lead to great coaching conversations. I’d love to hear both your strengths. Or if you do the VIA survey, what you discovered. Did anything surprise you? Comment below.

19.01.2022 Another gem from Virginia Woolf. It echoes a sentiment that I notice the women who seek out coaching with me often express. They want something more than the habits of daily life And now with corona, they want to go a step further. Now that so many of the habits that previously constituted daily life have been exploded, they want to create anew. The period post pandemic can be one of hope - a period of change, reinvention anew. ... In coaching, we aim to bring what is hidden and not articulated to the fore. To bring it to the centre. Look at it. And create. Give birth to new possibilities. Change. If you want to make significant changes to your life but aren't sure where to start, get in touch for for your complementary conversation. Send a facebook message or book at www.minervacoaching.net.au. And if you haven't done so, please like my page for your regular dose of coaching wisdom and possibility. #changemaker #change #woolf #coaching #feministcoaching #liveyourbestlife #postpandemic #changetheworld #changeyourlife #hope #camberwell3124 #lifebydesign #quoteoftheday #thoughtoftheday #beyourbestself #minervacoaching

19.01.2022 If you achieve ......., what would be different? Yesterday I posed the question What is the precise outcome you want. This is a similar question that I sometimes use with coachees to help them paint a fuller picture of their vision. ... It is really useful to identify precisely what would change (and what would not) if you achieve a particular thing. It helps you check whether the vision is the right one. Or whether you think you want it for some external reason - eg a desire for status. If the vision is the right one, it also provides a framework to measure success. If you are ready for change and think you could benefit from coaching, get in touch via direct message or via the link in bio.

18.01.2022 If you dont want ..... , what do you want? Often people will turn up to coaching with a vague sense of dissatisfaction about something. They arent happy with something, but are not sure what they do want. I sometimes use this question with my coachees to begin to uncover what they might want instead today. This will often lead to an exploration of desired states, and values. ... Once we know what is important to us, and what we want, we can begin to move towards it. When we are fleeing something, the thing we are fleeing is our reference point. For example, if I say dont think of the big black spider, what do you immediately think of? So, think of a challenge you are currently experiencing. Ask yourself this question.

17.01.2022 A silver lining of the past year has been that it has really opened up new possibilities. As both a lawyer and a coach, so many of the women I talk to tell me that they now have the space to reflect on how they structure their lives (including their careers). They have the opportunity to consider what is important, and to think about the role they want to play in responding to the environmental and social crisis within which we find ourselves. I'm putting together a 4 session... group program that I am planning to run from May called 'Creating your best life in a post-pandemic world'. The focus will be on identifying your values and strengths, measuring your current life - including your career - against those values and strengths, and creating concrete, tangible action steps to bring you closer to your best life. I'd love to hear from you - would this interest you? If so, does it cover what you would like it cover?

16.01.2022 If you lived your values what kind of life would you be living? Sometimes people feel like pressure to have the big vision, the big dream. This can be realistic. But if you have an idea of your current values, or the values you would like to be living your life in accordance with, you can begin to create a vision of what that values based living may look like. ... And experiment bit by bit. Create. Without the pressure. In coaching, we can explore your values in order to immediately take steps that can help bring you closer to the vision you have. If you think that you could benefit from this, get in touch via the link in bio.

15.01.2022 A common theme in my coaching at the moment is how much the pandemic has caused people to question how they were living before. And often due to hardship, they are navigating significant life and work changes? Has COVID-19 caused you to reconsider how you are living? What changes has it forced upon you. As horrible as this time is, are there are any changes that you are going to keep once the worst has passed? ... Comment below, Id love to hear from you. And if you would like to explore what is going on for you further, please feel free to reach out for a complementary coaching session - www.minervacoaching.net.au.

15.01.2022 Were all feeling it in Melbourne. Our beautiful city is hurting. More than ever, we are disconnected from exploring the rich cultural life of our city. We may be isolated, dealing with economic insecurity or juggling work and childcare/homeschooling. ... If you are in Melbourne and finding it challenging, please reach out for a complementary coaching session. There will be no selling, and at the end of the session it will be up to you if you want to raise the prospect of continuing the relationship. If you do, I am offering SIGNIFICANTLY discounted 3x1 hour targetted COVID sessions. Direct message or book at www.minervacoaching.net.au Please note that coaching is not counselling or therapy and is not appropriate if you are experiencing mental illness.

14.01.2022 This is something I have been thinking a lot about recently. Before the pandemic I read a book called How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy by Jenny Odell. It was one of Obamas top books of 2019. Despite its self help style title, its actually so much more - a compelling political treatise about how we differently focus our attention to imagine new ways of living. Not to retreat from the world, but rather to re-engage, and make collective action possible.... There is so much in the book, but a key idea is that by resisting the attention economy (eg yet another facebook scroll), one area we can focus on is the natural world. Disconnecting - temporarily - from the too much of everything. Disconnecting to both contemplate and participate. Directing our attention. She talks of getting to know the land she is from intimately, knowing the birds, the animals, the plants. She notes that it turns out that groundedness requires actual ground. I have come back to this book as although it was written immediately prior to the pandemic, it seems to be made for it. Indeed, she is giving the closing address next week at the Melbourne Writers Festival. Clearly she has hit the zeitgeist. Since the pandemic I have been walking my neighbourhood. I realise now how little I knew of it prior. The many streets, parks, paths. The differing architecture, its patterns. The hidden places. The changing colours of the seasons. The light. Its changed my whole attitude to how I relate to my neighbourhood and home. And my understanding of nature and how we must care for it. These moments of walking are also my moments of disconnection and clarity - free from worries of work, the pandemic. A time to just be. So, ask your yourself, where are you putting your attention? How might you redirect it to live a more intentional life? A more meaningful life?

14.01.2022 Are you a woman in your 20s,30s or 40s wanting to lead and challenge the status quo? What would you like to most explore with a coach in a coaching workshop? I'm designing a four session program and want to hear from you. Comment below or direct message welcome.

13.01.2022 Another gem from Virginia Woolf. So simple. So sad that - despite so much richness and wisdom, due to illness she couldn't ultimately find peace in her own life. Coaching is about facing life head on. About taking it and living its consciously and intentionally. A common and tragic alternative is sleep walking through the years. ... Get in touch for your complementary conversation - message me or book at www.minervacoaching.net.au. And if you haven't already done so like my page for your regular dose of coaching wisdom and new possibilities. #changemaker #thrive #liveyourbestlife #minervacoaching #lifestrategy #thrive #attention #deliberateliving #selfleadership #quote #thoughtoftheday #wellbeing #beyourbestself #lifebydesign #selfdevelopment #personalgrowth #camberwell3124 #lifecoachmelbourne #peace #life #ladyleaders #womenleaders

13.01.2022 Deep thoughts for a challenging time. Id love your thoughts.

12.01.2022 Why is that vision/goal important to you? This is a fundamental coaching question. Yesterday, I posed the question what is the goal behind the goal. This is similar, going beyond the stated rationale and digging to discover the importance of a particular stated aim. Sometimes significant time might need to be spent on this - trying to fully understand why something is important to you, for example, the values that underlie the goal. If you would like to explore how you could benefit from coaching, contact me via email (link in bio) or via direct message.

12.01.2022 I was listening to an expert in neuroscience recently who was talking about the scientific evidence about what happens to our brains, and specifically, our pre-frontal cortex, when we are stressed. That when there are too many neurotransmitters, our brain is compromised. These are very difficult times. For those of you in Melbourne, like me, this is the most difficult of times. There is stress, uncertainty and fear. We are being bombarded with distressing news. ... At times like this coaching is particularly valuable. And important. The techniques and tools that coaches use - helping people look at their values, focus on what it is in their power to change and take on new perspectives, have all been shown to reduce stress. When I am coaching I am completely focused on my client, seeking ask questions that will (re)connect them to what is important to them. If you think coaching could benefit you, please book your complementary session (see link in bio). There will be absolutely no selling, just pure coaching. For those of you in Melbourne, following your free complementary session, I am offering greatly reduced one off COVID 19 sessions. Get in touch (link in bio) if interested.

11.01.2022 Sometimes we might know exactly the project that we have to implement but not have a clear idea of the steps that we need to take to achieve it. This is a great question to ask to start a conversation to get an implementation plan - starting at the end and working backwards. It can be the beginning of a coaching conversation exploring the whole process. If you are interesting in exploring whether coaching may benefit you, you can book a complementary 1 hour exploratory session directly at www.minervacoaching.net.au.

11.01.2022 My unexpected path to coaching, despite a happy and engaging career as a government lawyer, came because I saw first hand the power of coaching and the changes that could be created through the process. A good coach asks the questions, and takes you to places, that you wouldnt necessarily get to on your own. And that, friends, is a place where change can happen. ... If you would like to change something, whether small or large, get in touch at www.minervacoaching.net.au/get-in-touch or via messenger.

10.01.2022 What is the goal behind your goal? When understanding what it is we want to achieve its important to go deeper, and ask, what is the goal behind the goal? This question - or something like it - might need to be quite a few times. It forces a person to go up level of abstraction to really understand why something is important to them. To deepen their understanding of precisely what it is that they want to achieve. ... So have a think, what is the goal behind your goal? If you would like to explore the prospect of coaching, please get in touch with me for a discussion about how coaching might benefit you. Facebook message or via [email protected]

09.01.2022 What are you prioritising today? Sometimes you hear people say "I would love to but I dont have time". I catch myself saying this sometimes. But of course I have time. But I dont have time for what I am not prioritising. ... This month the theme of posts will be planning and implementation. This is the area I struggle with - I love the visioning, the ideas, but this is where I often need the most coaching... What about you?

09.01.2022 Sometimes we might have an idea about what we want to achieve, but perhaps its vague or uncertain. A lot of the questions I have been posing this month have been about trying to either experiment to begin to formulate a vision or alternatively to expand it. This is a great question to think about if you want to understand the difference achieving your goal or vision. What would others notice? ... You could get more specific. What about your family? Your friends? Your colleagues? your community? your neighbours?

09.01.2022 The potential of values awareness - external and internal values

08.01.2022 This is a great question to ask if you are not sure what you want. This bring things back to basics. If you could just flick a switch and alter your life in a way that really suited you, what are some of the areas of your life you might begin to make changes in? A follow up question might be, is there any particular part of your life where if you just shifted that, you things would life. ... If you would like to explore coaching with me, get in touch via email (link in bio) or direct message above.

08.01.2022 What is in your control? Often when I talk to people about the struggles they have, they describe a big situation, and set out a whole lot of external factors. Often their agency is entirely removed. This gets us stuck in the problem. We may be overwhelmed. By asking this powerful question you can begin to identify both the power that you have - your degree of agency in any particular situation, as well as what is beyond the scope of your control. This is freeing. ... Sometimes there are things that are currently out of your control that may shift into your sphere of control if you take certain action. When we identify what is in our control we reclaim our agency and move towards a solutions-focused approach. So think of a current struggle. What is within your control?

08.01.2022 I often use scaling questions in coaching. They can be a really useful tool when analysing the current situation in relation to an aspect of someones life, whether it be work or something personal. It helps identify where they are at, why and opens the door to exploring how they might move up the scale. Think about a challenge or area of your life. Perhaps your health. Ask yourself this question. Consider the number. For example, if it is a 4 - well, that is not a 1.... So what is going well that makes it a 4 and not a 1 or 2? What would a 5 look life? A 7? A 10? Where would you like to get to? What would that look like? How would you know you had got there? If you are serious about making change in your life and think that you could benefit from coaching, have a look at www.minervacoaching.net.au (link in bio) and get in touch.

08.01.2022 If you were to achieve your vision, who would you become? In my latest blog post I explore ideas of identity and becoming. I reference my intellectual hero, Simone de Beauvoir, and her world view that we "Existence precedes essence". ... I explore how this fits with the coaching approach. To read more, go to my blog - www.minervacoaching.net.au/blog

07.01.2022 The last of couple of days I have asked what you can do differently and what you can stop doing. Another helpful question is What can you start today? Maybe there is something you have wanted to do for a while. It might be something big. ... But it might also just be a tiny tweak that could make a difference. So, what can you start today? If you think that coaching could benefit you, and you are serious about change, get in touch. I am looking for a very small number of women to commence one on one coaching with me over the next couple of months.

06.01.2022 If you achieve ___________, what will you see? Hear? feel? Another great question I sometimes ask to help my clients clarify and expand their vision. It enables a person to really step in and visualise what it would be like to achieve the goal/vision. To understand at a deep level the difference it would make. ... To hold on to a rich vision as they then seek to implement that vision. If you are ready for change and think you could benefit from coaching please contact me directly, either by direct message or email ([email protected]) You can find more about me at www.minervacoaching.net.au

06.01.2022 I've decided Wednesdays will be for quotes. But thoughtful, feminist, humanist quotes that fit with a liberated, feminist, coaching approach to the world. Virginia Woolf is one of my favourite authors. Reading a Room of Her Own at university changed my life. Mrs Dalloway and Orlando enriched it. I love her modernist, feminist take on the world. Its demand for women to attract themselves from the margins of history and re-insert themselves into the centre of the narrat...ive. Although Woolf could never imagined coaching as a methodology, its roots go back to, among other things, existentialism, and before that modernism, and this quote reflects a belief that whilst we may not be able to choose the pieces of life that come our way - for example pestilence - we can shape them, respond to them, and carve out our lives. This is what coaching is all about - living consciously. By asking questions, we can more consciously arrange the pieces. And not have them arranged fully by others.

05.01.2022 Its mighty time I introduced myself properly! My name is Kathleen Brenner and I am the founder of Minerva Coaching. I live in beautiful Melbourne, which is currently suffering deeply from Stage 4 COVID-19 restrictions. This pic is an iso selfie of me in my workspace. I started Minerva Coaching because I wanted to make a difference to the lives of people around me, with a particular focus on women who want to live their best lives and be change-makers in their workplaces an...d communities. The problems in the world seem so grave, and its so easy to lose hope and fall into a destructive nihilism. Thats the opposite of whats needed. In this time of great social change, I see so many people reviewing their lives. Questioning how they have been living and deciding that enough is enough. Coaching has never been more needed. Through the experience of coaching, I have seen my clients make significant shifts in their lives. Perhaps its a small tweak in their personal life, maybe a change to how they show up in their workplace or community. I want to coach women, and their businesses, to be the change-makers we need. As a coach, I bring a wealth of experience from my other profession as both a lawyer and public servant at different levels of government.

05.01.2022 This is another great question. Like some of the other questions I have posed in the last few days, it helps enrich the picture of the vision. This time, by taking a different perspective, asking what others may notice. This provides the space for us to look at the vision from a different perspective. If you are ready for change and think that coaching might benefit you, please contact me. Direct message or via the link in bio.

04.01.2022 What is stopping you? Maybe there are things you have wanted to do for a long time. But something has stopped you. Often this is fear. Perhaps inertia. This question can be useful when you feel stuck. ... If you identify the answer to this question, its possible to be coached around it. To really understand why, and to move beyond whatever the barrier is. If you are serious about change, and think you could benefit from coaching, read more about me at www.minervacoaching.net.au and get in touch.

03.01.2022 Who controls your time? This question is a good one if you are struggling with time. Perhaps there are things you are saying yes to that you could be saying no to? ... Of course, often there are things that are non-negotiable - we serve others through love and duty. And women of course disproportionately take on the caring duties in society. But still. If someone else is controlling your time, is there scope to get that control back? To prioritise something else?

02.01.2022 Yesterday, I posed the question What can you do differently?. Todays question follows. To create space for the new something old has to go. ... This can be hard. Ive decided to stop making excuses about my exercise. Im just going to do it. What about you?

01.01.2022 What is the precise outcome you want? This can be a really clarifying question when you have a vague sense of your vision, but are low are details or specifics. Particularly useful for global thinkers who are prone to begin with the really big picture, perhaps starting with principles, concepts and beliefs. ... Considering this question will help you deduce downwards to specific details. As a lawyer, as well as a coach, I am suspicious of headline statements without substance. If I have learnt anything in over 12 years as a government lawyer, it is that detail matters. I bring my my style of questioning to my coaching - asking really fundamental, practical questions to enable my coachees create rich, holistic visions. If you are ready for change in your life, and think coaching could benefit, please get in touch via direct message or via the link in bio. So, what is the precise outcome you want?
