25.01.2022 It's that time of year. The weather is getting colder, and the mountains are calling. But injury can put you out of commission here are four top tips on how to stay safe on the slopes all this winter. Cardio Take time to improve your cardiovascular system before heading out to the slopes to increase your skiing stamina. This could include taking the stairs instead of the lift or escalator or going for a run, jog, cycle or stepping for twenty minutes a few times a week. Stre...ngth Exercise your hip gluteals using the classic clam exercise where you lie on your side with your hips and knees in a skiing position, and keeping your ankles together you lift your top knee, like a clam opening and closing. Biomechanics Work on your neutral pelvis position, when your bottom is not too tucked under or sticking out too far. This position allows your muscles to work better. You can practice bending your knees into a skiing position while maintaining pelvic neutrality for 30 reps every day until it feels natural. Warm up A warm-up is one of the essential parts of an exercise program. It not only prepares your body for more strenuous activity but it also helps to prevent injury to muscles that are more susceptible to injury when cold.

24.01.2022 Encourage Action Ask: "What have you done in the past to manage similar situations?" Ask: "How would you like me to support you?"... Ask: "What's something you can do for yourself right now? Something that's enjoyable or relaxing?" You could say: "When I was going through a difficult time, I tried this... You might find it useful too." If they've been feeling really down for more than 2 weeks, encourage them to see a health professional. You could say, "It might be useful to link in with someone who can support you. I'm happy to assist you to find the right person to talk to." Be positive about the role of professionals in getting through tough times.

23.01.2022 Sleep Awareness Week draws attention to the importance of sleep as a vital component of a healthy lifestyle. Everyone deserves a good nights rest, so you can wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day. Unfortunately, sometimes it can be hard to get that good nights sleep, which can cause undue stress and fatigue. Top Tip ... Getting into a regular bedtime pattern can help your body set its internal body clock. Going to bed at a regular time will let your body acclimatise to a pattern, meaning that youll likely get naturally sleepy at a specific time and start waking up at a consistent time. The amount of sleep you need to properly function will be somewhere in the range of 6 to 8 hours, so its best to work with what you feel is best for your body and plan your sleep schedule around that. The more often you keep to your sleep schedule, the more likely it is that youll achieve a night of restful sleep.

20.01.2022 Depending on your location, social distancing measures have affected access to some gyms and recreational sports. This may limit your weekly exercise volume. While it may not be possible to recreate your regular routine under lockdown, there are still plenty of ways to exercise at home or in the community to maintain a healthy mind and body. Modify Your Exercise:... Consider the following activities that require little to no equipment or venues: Home workouts sourced from Google, Youtube or mobile applications. Many of these can be performed with little or no equipment. Consider home weights, resistance bands or simple body-weight exercises for strength training. Yoga or stretching workouts. Again, consider free online content or eBooks. Gardening or DIY home projects. Group exercise classes through online platforms such as Zoom. With the most up to date restrictions in mind, walking or running around your neighbourhood. Look for new pathways, hills or lookouts that you may never have explored. Hikes in national parks. Surfing or fishing. Swimming in your home pool or the ocean. Bike riding. Keeping up with the above activities will help to keep you healthy, active and prevent back pain during lockdown. https://rmsyhc.com/3bakGj2

19.01.2022 THE CYCLE OF LIFE AT JOHN FLYNN. MACKENZIE CLARIDGE gave birth to her first baby at John Flynn Private Hospital+ on 6/8/20. She had an uncomplicated birth and enjoyed settling into her room with her bundle of joy with proud dad Branden. When Mackenzie's mum, Allisen Claridge, came to visit, she was delighted to meet the same midwives that had been at McKenzie's birth 20 years earlier. Ann Smith had been at her birth, and Robyn Martin had cared for her in her pregnancies as ...she worked for Dr Chris Margin in his consulting rooms for all her three children. Mackenzie was born 11/01/2000. We all remember that new year, as the focus was on the new millennium and would our computers survive the switch? All our equipment sported the Y2K stickers. Now 20 years on, all we see is covid signs everywhere!! Ann Smith, who has worked for the establishment since 1989 says the time has flown, and it is a joy to see the next generation being born under her care. The John Flynn Midwives wish all the family happy times as they welcome baby Ryder into their lives. This goes to show, old midwives never die, they just keep on working !!

16.01.2022 IMPORTANT HOSPITAL INFORMATION UPDATE From 8 am 29 August 2020 VISITORS ... Due to recently announced cases in Queensland extra restrictions have now been put in place for hospitals. As a precaution, Queenslands Chief Health Officer has recommended visitors should temporarily not be entering hospitals. We understand that many people will want to visit their loves ones in hospital, however we need to make sure we are doing everything we can to protect our patients and health care workers. Exceptions to the no visitor rule will be made on a case-by-case basis. Patients who are children will be allowed one parent/carer and maternity patients will be allowed one support person. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT We are following the advice of Queensland Health and increasing the use of PPE (personal protective equipment). All patients, staff and approved visitors will now be required to wear a mask entering the hospital and must wear it when in public areas of the hospital. Everyone who enters the hospital must undergo temperature screening and complete electronic screening via the QR code scanning system on entry. If patients do not have a smartphone to complete this scanning process, staff on the door will be able to assist them manually by asking them a series of questions. Our staff are available in all entry areas to assist patients. Its really important for us all to play our part in stopping the spread of COVID-19. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your support as we navigate through this time together.

15.01.2022 Listen with an open mind If you are concerned about someone, trust your gut and ask, Are you OK?. Listen with an open mind to what they have to say and ask them what you can do to help. In the current circumstances, there might be limits on what you can do but you can definitely be a listening ear and a (virtual) shoulder to lean on. Take what they say seriously and don't interrupt or rush the conversation.... Don't judge their experiences or reactions but acknowledge that things seem tough for them. If they need time to think, sit patiently with the silence. Encourage them to explain: "How are you feeling about that?" or "How long have you felt that way?" Show that you've listened by repeating back what you've heard (in your own words) and ask if you have understood them properly. https://rmsyhc.com/2GGgOez

15.01.2022 Speech Pathology Week In Australia today, communication disability remains largely invisible Unseen and out-of-sight. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has highlighted the challenges faced by Australians with communication disability. Thats why during Speech Pathology Week, from 23-29 August, speech pathologists are highlighting the weeks theme: Communicating with Confidence.... Communicating with confidence is vital to enable everyone to participate fully in the social, educational, economic and sporting aspects of community life. Australians with communication disability cannot maximise future educational, health and social outcomes, without the intervention of a speech pathologist. Communication, by definition, involves at least two people. It is important that everyone understands that communication is more than speech. Australians with communication difficulties communicate with others using a variety of means, including word-based or picture-based communication boards or books, sign and gesture, and spelling. Technology is playing a growing and vital role in keeping Australians with communication difficulties engaged with their family, friends and others in the community. Assistive technology, such as electronic communication and speech generating devices, voice amplification and computer access aids allow people with communication difficulties to communicate with those around them. It is important that the broader community understands that: Levels of limitation range from mild to profound and can be temporary or last a lifetime. Children and older people make up the majority of people with communication disability. People with communication disability were less likely to have a non-school qualification (42%) than people without communication disability (61%). Thirty-eight percent of people with communication disability are participating in the labour force compared with 80% of people without communication disability. One in 7 people with communication disability need formal assistance with communication. Half of all people who need formal assistance with communication have an unmet need for this assistance. 14.01.2022 Today we introduce you to another member of the amazing team here at John Flynn Private! Meet Joyce Reid, our incredible Calm Birth Teacher extraordinaire. We thought it would be fun to ask her a few questions to get to know her better!... 1. What is your role at John Flynn? I am a Registered Midwife / Registered Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist. 2.. How long have you worked at the hospital? Over 15 years. I starting work here when my eldest child, who was born at JFP, was 6 months old. 3. What’s 1 thing that you love about your job? That’s such a hard question! I love all aspects of my job. It’s about relationships - however brief or long, that you make with the women and their partners during the time they spend here. Be it through their actual birth, or the care you are involved with on the postnatal ward. It’s an honour and a privilege to be a part of someone’s birthing journey. 4. What’s your food? Peanut butter on toast. I could live on that. Yum 5. If travelling anywhere in the world was allowed right now, where would you love to go? It would be to England to visit my own mother, and the rest of my family there. 6. What’s 1 piece of advice you would give a first time mum? Trust in yourself, trust what your heart tells you. Feel free to say hello to Joyce in the comments!

14.01.2022 OLYMPIC STAR INSPIRES RAMSAY STAFF ON R U OK? DAY Olympic swimming champion Brooke Hanson OAM has praised the amazing work of Ramsay Health Care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, as part of an inspiring webinar to mark R U OK? Day. The national day of action encourages Australians to ask friends, family and colleagues R U OK? if someone in their world is struggling with lifes ups and downs.... Ms Hanson told the hundreds of Ramsay staff who joined the webinar, it was important people take time out for themselves and celebrate their small achievements, not only the big ones. You have all gone above and beyond during this COVID-19 pandemic and youve done so much for our country, Ms Hanson said. You wont always get credit but know that you are loved and supported by so many Australians and we wouldnt have gotten through this without you. So many times youve done fantastic things at work but you may not take time out with colleagues to pat yourselves on the back and say well done. You really need to reach out to each other and celebrate - it can just be as simple as saying hey, well done. Ms Hanson, an Olympic gold and silver medallist, world champion and former world record holder, delivered an inspirational hour-long presentation, where she spoke of the immense challenges she has faced - not only in pursuing her sporting dream but also in her private life, with the loss of her second child Jack at just nine months old. There have been times where I havent been ok, the 42 year old said. I held my son Jack for his last breath and it showed me how precious and short life can be. Id give all my Olympic achievements, all those medals, away if I could have just one more cuddle with my little man. We had to say goodbye to him and that was the saddest day of my life, Ms Hanson said. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well. Were all going to struggle with mental health at some point and we all have to conquer and support each other. Its why R U OK? Day is so important. Ms Hanson spoke of the importance of self-love and self-care - which included a healthy diet, exercise and getting plenty of sleep. Its one of those magical things, exercise, healthy living and eating can make a big difference, she said. The link to Ms Hansons powerful webinar will be available to the Ramsay workforce on the intranet to watch at a time convenient for them. She has also written a book, When Silver is Gold, with all profits from the sale of each copy donated to Lifes Little Treasures Foundation in memory of her son Jack.

12.01.2022 HOW TO AVOID BACK PAIN WHILE WORKING FROM HOME As we continue to adjust to new and flexible working environments, what is the best way to avoid back pain and injury? Posture Plus ... Poor posture puts stress on your back and can cause upper and middle back pain. - Try to stand or sit tall, keeping your back as straight as possible and balance your weight evenly on both feet. - Don't slump or slouch and keep your shoulders rolled back. - If you spend a lot of time at a computer, at home and at work, make sure the screen is at eye level, never below and not too far away so that you have to reach to it. Be Active No matter your exercise levels, it's generally good advice to stay as active as possible to promote back health and reduce the risk of developing problems. - If you're sat at a desk all day, get up and walk around or just shift your sitting posture as often as possible. - Take the stairs where possible. - Gardening, cleaning, and other household activities can help to increase your exercise levels while still being productive De-Stress Stress can make your pain feel worse. Busy working schedules, alongside the many other challenges that modern women face, can mean that women dont always feel that breastfeeding their child is something that is an accessible option to them. A good nights sleep is vital for good health as it allows our bodies to repair themselves and our brains to consolidate our memories and process information. Top Tip - Wind down before you go to bed... The act of relaxing and winding down before going to sleep is an important step in the process of going to bed. Not only can certain actions be incorporated into your routine to tell your body its time to sleep, such as stretching or gentle yoga routines, but the activities themselves can help you to chill out. Organising your thoughts and putting them down on a to-do list or weekly planner can help you clear your mind of worries or concerns, or even just setting an alarm on your phone with a label to remind you to do something urgent. Reading a book, listing to calming music or a podcast can also lull you to sleep by taking your mind off of things and get your brain going as you fall into a deep sleep. It could even stop you worrying about whether youre going to get to sleep! #ramsayhealth #sleepbetter #sleepinCOVID19 #sleepawarenessweek #sleepandmentalhealth #SAW2020 #SleepAwarenessWeek

08.01.2022 CHECK-IN The coronavirus pandemic comes as many Australians are still feeling the impact of recent bushfires, floods and drought. Its very normal to not feel OK in challenging times such as these. Watching and listening to media and social media coverage and commentary can be confronting and confusing. However, at a time when were being asked to physically distance ourselves from one another, we can make use of freed up diary time and our digital devices to stay connected.... Pop a reminder in your diary to call them in a couple of weeks. If they're really struggling, follow up with them sooner. You could say: "I've been thinking of you and wanted to know how you've been going since we last chatted." Ask if they've found a better way to manage the situation. If they haven't done anything, don't judge them. They might just need someone to listen to them for the moment. Stay in touch and be there for them. Genuine care and concern can make a real difference.

07.01.2022 - RAMSAY LAUNCHES NEW COVID-19 SCREENING TOOL - Ramsay Health Care is launching a new smartphone tool to streamline the COVID-19 screening process for visitors, patients and health care workers at its Australian hospitals, clinics and day surgeries. The robust screening system requires a person to scan a unique QR code using the camera function on their smartphone before they enter the facility. ... They will be asked to answer some simple questions about any possible exposure to COVID-19, including: Have you ever been diagnosed with COVID-19? Have you been in contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case in the past 14 days? Have you been formally identified as a close contact of a confirmed case? Are you unwell with any cold or flu-like symptoms including: fevers, cough, vomiting, diarrhoea, night sweats or chills, or acute respiratory infection including cough shortness of breath or sore throat? Have you travelled overseas in the past 14 days? Once they have answered all questions, their phone will display either a green or amber colour: If the scan returns a green colour, the person can show a Ramsay staff member their result and enter the facility. If the scan returns an amber colour, the person will need to speak to a staff member to determine why they have received that result and whether it is safe for them to enter the facility. The screening tool is designed to help stop the spread of COVID-19, minimise disruptions and streamline the entry process for patients, visitors, doctors and staff alike. Previously patients and visitors had to be individually interviewed at each Ramsay facility about their possible exposure to COVID-19, and this had unfortunately led to some delays. Ramsays IT team has been working hard to roll out the technology quickly, given the recent spike in COVID-19 cases, particularly in Victoria and New South Wales. The questions and instructions are also currently being translated into five other languages to assist people for whom English is not their first language. They are: Chinese, French, Arabic, Vietnamese and Italian. The COVID-19 screening tool is also a great asset for Ramsay Health Care heading into the future, with visitor numbers expected to increase as elective surgery capacity improves. Each Ramsay facility across the country will have its own unique QR scan code and patient and visitor data will be stored safely and securely. The QR code will be displayed on signage outside the entry points of all Ramsay facilities.

01.01.2022 Did you know? There are 283 Australians diagnosed every day with diabetes. Of these: 158 had Type 2 diabetes, 9 had Type 1 Diabetes and the remainder had Gestational, LADA or other forms of diabetes.... The estimated financial costs of all diabetes in Australia is 14.6 billion every year. This year Diabetes Week is recognising the daily burden of living with diabetes. A glimpse in a life of someone with Type 1 Diabetes: You are young mother with 3 children. You wake to a BGL of 16mmols. You take the insulin based on a calculation taught to you by your doctor/diabetes educator. You are about to feed yourself and the children before dropping them at school and racing to work. Then, the younger child has an accident. You drop everything and deal with the injury. Suddenly the next thing you know is that you are feeling fogging you cant concentrate, you feel you may pass out. You check your BGL and it is 2.0mmols. You grab a large juice and follow through with a handful of jelly beans as you need to get your levels up quick no time for breakfast. You finally get the kids in the car and off to work. BGL now 23mmols and climbing, you feel like you have been run over by a truck. Think about this next time you care for a patient with Type 1 diabetes and tell them they are doing the best job they can do under circumstances and NEVER call them non-compliant until you have walked in their shoes for a day. Every day brings new challenges for someone living with or caring for someone with type 1 diabetes as they try to move through life trying to prevent complications. Did you know that diabetes is the leading cause of preventable blindness, there are approximately 4,400 amputations every year in Australia as a result of diabetes and 27.600 hospital admissions related to diabetes foot problems? Add to this stroke, cardiac disease, renal failure, gastroparesis, Charcots foot, peripheral neuropathy, frozen shoulder and all the many vascular complications that a person with diabetes is at risk of developing.
