25.01.2022 Embracing these challenging times has elevated our society values from ‘Me first’ to ‘We’re all in this together’. And although social interaction has changed dramatically due to COVID times, we have continued servicing the community on weekdays and Saturdays as usual. Not a single day passes that doesn’t remind us of how fragile yet resilient human beings are and how fantastic it feels to be able to attend to our patients in a safe and caring environment.

22.01.2022 ORTHOKERATOLOGY For Myopia Progression Control There are a couple of things to look out which may indicate a child has myopia (shortsightedness). The first is when a child read and hold books very close. The second sign is squinting to try and see things in the distance. Ortho K contact lenses worn overnight and removed in the morning had been shown to be effective in controlling progression of a childs myopia, especially during the growth period of adolescence.... These specially designed contact lenses gently reshape the cornea while sleeping and correct your vision which means, no glasses or contact lenses during the day. Call us on 9727 5442 to arrange an appointment for an assessment.

21.01.2022 I would like to thank Annie Ku & Rania Matta from ‘Stepping On’ for their kind invitation to be involved in the production of the ‘Vision & Falls Prevention’ video. Here is a photo from the morning as we prepare for filming of the educational video. I will post the link to the video once it becomes available after final production. ‘Stepping On’ is a falls prevention program including exercise and educational sessions organised by South Western Sydney Local Health Distr...ict and delivered FREE to people over 65 years of age. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, face-to-face sessions have been replaced by educational videos. As an optometrist, I spoke about: - the importance of regular eye checks - eye conditions in older age - vision strategies, aids and techniques in the home environment and outdoors The key messages were: - Low vision is NOT blindness. - There are strategies to enhance your vision to make life safer and more enjoyable - Assistance is available; we are here to help For more information, see Stepping On at https://www.steppingon.com/

21.01.2022 BREAK FREE FROM YOUR FRAMES! There are many reasons for wearing contact lenses, especially when glasses can get in the way. Here are just some examples: If youre an active person and love to exercise. Theyre great for cooking as they dont fog up. Fantastic for social events and to avoid those photo reflections.... Great for when youre applying make-up The practicalities of not wearing glasses for many patients, brings more benefits than disadvantages. If you are thinking contact lenses might be a better option for your lifestyle, then why wait? @ Sydney, Australia

18.01.2022 It is so satisfying seeing happy faces around the practice. Here is both mum and daughter enjoying a laugh after collecting their brand new prescription filters. It is been 3 years since they both began their Visual Stress treatment with amazing results. Miss Zs progress through high school has been outstanding. When she first saw me in 2016, she was suffering with tired eyes and poor concentration whilst she was reading. The continuous movement of the text and the appearanc...e of shapes and different patterns whilst reading was always dismissed by others as something that she was imaging and didnt exist. Previous prescription glasses did not help. In fact, she is currently wearing permanent filters without any prescription, only coloured lenses. Her mum Mrs S reported watery, red and tired eyes, along with sun glare and pattern issues. This compromised her ability to concentrate in her occupation while working in her spreadsheets because she was always losing her place when reading. She would experience flickering in her vision and it felt like her eyes were jumping up & down. She was chronically fatigued and always suffering with headaches. Previous treatments involving eye drops for dry eye & thicker lens prescriptions did not resolve her issues. These days, Mrs S wears prescription filter glass constantly and all of her symptoms have disappeared; no more eye drops, red eyes or headaches. She can work all day and see well without getting tired. So, it has been a real pleasure serving these 2 lovely ladies on their way to recovery from Visual Stress. And the good news for them is that Its only going to get better.

14.01.2022 My personal journey with Myopia: when seeing at a distance is a struggle. I was only 5 years old when I visited the optometrist for the very first time. My kindergarten teacher could tell I was struggling to read from the blackboard and this was affecting my learning. Myopia (or shortsightedness) was uncommon back in those days. There were no digital screens or video games. We would read from a blackboard and books. We would write on paper and actually play outdoors. Sometime...s I would trip over or drop the ball because I just couldnt see properly. In contrast, Myopia today is on the increase. I am seeing many more children with Myopia at a younger age than I ever have in my 35 years as an Optometrist. The increase alone cannot be solely blamed on bad genetics but on environmental factors like digital screens (smartboards, computers and mobile phones), too much time spent sitting indoors and lack of sun exposure (vitamin D deficiency). The good news is an early diagnosis of Myopia is not all bad news. Once one of my little patients is diagnosed with Myopia, they can be corrected with spectacles to help them see at school and Ill follow the child as he or she grows. Although Myopia can progress, there are many safe techniques we can use to reduce the rate of progression such as Myopia control spectacles, eye drops and overnight corneal reshaping contact lenses. Because there was no Myopia control therapies available when I was a child, my Myopia progressed rapidly and that makes me more predisposed to bad eye disease as I get older. Only just recently, in November 2019, I had a small blood vessel rupture at the back of my eye due to the thinning caused by my shortsightedness. I was so fortunate to have received treatment straightaway and my central vision was restored. So if you suspect your child is unable to see at a distance, dont leave it unattended and make an appointment with your optometrist. There are so many nice childrens frames available (like the ones in the photos) which can help your child function normally at school and help their learning process. Finally, having personally suffered from vision problems all my life, it gives me great satisfaction to assist parents looking for answers to improve their childrens vision.

14.01.2022 Here is John personally delivering the new special optical filters. Although they look green to us, for Iris and her husband Alfredo they are clear, comfortable and relaxing.

13.01.2022 IMPORTANT HEALTH UPDATE As an optometric practice focusing on eyecare and providing the best quality of care to our patients, we continue to uphold our high standards of hygiene and infection control policies and procedures With the evolving developments around COVID-19, we have implemented additional health measures to ensure we maintain a safe environment for you and our staff.... - Additional hygiene precautions have been implemented to prevent the spread of germs, including disinfecting of surfaces, all handled frames and equipment. - All visitors are encouraged to use the available hand sanitiser within the practice. - We are avoiding physical contact where possible and were smiling to say hello, rather than shaking hands. - During consultations, we are utilising protective shields and gloves as appropriate, while avoiding unnecessary close contact and ensuring equipment is disinfected comprehensively for every patient. - Our scheduled appointments are flowing such that social distancing measures are implemented with less patients in the waiting area and appropriate space utilisation and furniture layout that allows separation of seated patients. - You can help us out here by arriving on time for your appointment to support this safety measure for the benefit of our community. - We have strict protocols in place should any staff member become unwell to protect our patients and remaining staff. 12.01.2022 While some of us may struggle to cope with the day-to-day changes and fears of the COVID-19 pandemic, a new reality emerges for those who want to stay sane. You name it, from training your cat to bring the newspaper to teaching your baby how to Tik-Tok, we are all in this together. It is admirable how resilient human beings are in responding to these challenges. We are doing our bit in staying healthy and providing a safe environment for our patients, so we jus...t want to say to you, you are not alone. I find tranquillity in my music and sport. I enjoy listening to music from the 70s & 80s, playing drums and playing squash. It helps me deal with stress and it re-energizes me so I can give my best to others. How do you stay sane during this time? Heres hoping everything will be ok.

10.01.2022 EYE DROPS FOR MYOPIA (SHORTSIGHTEDNESS) CONTROL - Over 20% of your Australian adults are affected by myopia - It is predicted that 50% of the global population will be short sighted by 2050 - Over 80% of young adults in East Asian cities are affected by myopia... - Excessive reading, digital screens (incl. mobile phones), family history and lack of sun exposure are key risk factors Although shortsightedness is quite benign and correctable with spectacles and contact lenses, if not treated it usually progresses through puberty and high school. High levels of myopia are associated with an increased risk of sight-threatening problems such as retinal detachment, macula choroidal neovascularisation, cataracts, and glaucoma. One of the methods we use to slow myopia progression in my practice is low dose Atropine therapy. This is a single eye drop instilled into the childs eyes at bed-time and this has been shown to slow progression by approximately 50-60% with few risks. The earlier the start of treatment, the better the control. Please have a look at the interview with Prof Donald Tan who explains how this very simple yet quite powerful treatment works. https://www.aao.org/intervi/atropine-myopia-latest-outcomes For more information or to book an appointment, please go to www.drjohnmusumecioptometrist.com.au.

07.01.2022 WHEN READING & MAINTAINING CONCENTRATION IS DIFFICULT I recently consulted a Leadership and EQ Facilitator who spends a lot of time reading, researching and preparing group workshops. This involves lots of working with whiteboards, smartboards and digital screens. When I met her, she said this had become quite challenging. The words were not clear and they seemed to be moving. She would lose her place while reading and she felt very stressed and frustrated.... Following a comprehensive vision & eye examination, she was diagnosed with Visual Stress Syndrome, a problem with the way she processes visual information. I recommended a Colorimetry Assessment and this investigates her response to light, patterns and different forms of colour. This 30 minute consultation revealed a distinct sensitivity to short-wavelength visible light. That is, the blue & purple end of the colour spectrum. To resolve this, I prescribed a 16% yellow filter together with her normal optical correction. Its been exactly 2 years since I first saw her and she continues to have great comfort with her prescription optical filters which are tinted to the precise colour that suits her vision. No longer does information move and she doesnt lose her place while reading or writing on a white background. Reading problems can be caused by a range of visual issues such as difficulties with focusing, eye coordination and visual processing. Often, these issues can be missed or just ignored. If you can relate to this or have a child with reading problems, dont wait too long to get a diagnosis.
