17.01.2022 Termites are on the move. If anyone is seeing flying bugs in the house tonight around their lights there is a good chance they are alates (flying termites). If anyone is worried and wants an opinion on this please take a closeup pic and pm us @johspestcontrol we carry out local inspections if needed Try and get a sample of a few of them, examine the shape if - they have equal sized fore and hind wings, have 2 main sections (head and body) and have straightish beaded antennae - they are more than likely alates (flying termites) Dont leave it until its too late. www.johspestcontrol.com

12.01.2022 Here are some tips for Homeowners to help keep your house termite free. www.johspestcontrol.com THINGS THAT CAN ATTRACT TERMITES TO YOUR HOUSE ... There are a number of environmental conditions in and around your house that where possible need to be addressed and some of these are: 1 Tree stumps and logs on ground all should be removed. 2 Fire wood stacked on ground is not a good idea it should be stored on concrete slab or off the ground and definitely not in subfloor. 3 Partition walls particularly in highset downstairs are generally built over slab joints which is a common access point for termites . 4 Garage door jams overhang house slab edge, its a good idea to cut it at the base so as there is 40mm visual clearance. 5 External walls used as formwork for footpaths and driveways gives termites a direct access into building. 6 Water feature up against an external wall not a good idea, moisture attracts termites. 7 Ant capping cut or bent over to accommodate partition walls. 8 Enclosing piers with plaster or any material as there is a cold joint around piers. 9 Garden beds and mulch built up to and or covering weepholes, there should be 50-75mm clearance. a garden against a building is not a good idea. 10 Leaving formwork under suspended slab and stairs they all should be removed. 11 Timber decks on ground should have 50mm clearance from external walls and not cover weepholes . 12 Battens and batten supports should have 50-75mm clearance from the ground. 13 Timber posts for pergolas and verandas should be on stirrups with 50-75mm clearance from the ground. 14 Dont put rocks over a chemical treated zone (barrier) as termites will travel through stones as chemical does not bind to rock only clay particles and organic matter in the soil. 15 Posts for fences attached to building should have 50-75mm clearance from the ground. 16 Dont use untreated timber for retaining walls

06.01.2022 Its time to inspect your home for these hungry little buggers. www.johspestcontrol.com Subterranean Termites... Subterranean termite colonies can consist of millions of termites, usually nesting underground, in the trunks and roots of both living and dead trees and mounds made of earth. They typically consume wood from the inside out, meaning that typically the termites presence is only visible when the wood is eaten away. There are over 350 species of termites in Australia. About 25 of those are classed as major pests, causing damage of economic significance. Most of these pests are subterranean (apart from dry wood termites). Most of the major pest termites are found Australia wide. A visual timber pest inspection should be done annually by a qualified termite technician. Some houses need to be done six monthly depending on environmental conditions. A moisture meter can be used to find infestations inside a house as termites keep their working at ninety percent humidity, so they dont dehydrate. You should also note if fungus is growing inside the walls or under the floors, as fungus usually grows in their working which they feed on for protein.

04.01.2022 We continue our information series on pests. Mice The House Mouse... The house mouse is the most common mouse that invades your house, office or other indoor place. They are active all year round, taking roughly three months from being born to reaching sexual maturity. They love to eat cereals, and usually live on the ground. A female has about eight litters a year where a litter consists of typically ten baby mice. Things to look out for: Spotting the mice running around the house in the corner of your eye (such as under the fridge, around the corners of a room.) Bottoms of cereal and other food packages have holes in them, where the mice have chewed through. Droppings on floor. Noise and scratching in the roof and/or walls.

04.01.2022 EQUIPMENT WE USE Moisture Meter Subterranean termites need about ninety percent humidity in their working environment in order to survive. This makes them easier to detect in walls, floors and ceilings by measuring the moisture level in those areas by the use of what is called a moisture meter.... John uses a Tramex Moisture Meter for pest inspections, typically termite inspections. Tramex is a leading manufacturer of moisture meters. The detection of a high level of moisture on the surface can be an indication of a termite infestation in and around your property. See more

03.01.2022 TERMITES ARE ON THE MOVE www.johspestcontrol.com Termites are on the move at this time of the year as they are preparing for the annual flight of the wing alates which are the future kings and queens to start new nests. These flights happen when the nest is at least 3 years old and older, out of the thousands of alates that take off you would only get 80-100 maybe more nests start up and out of the 80-100 nests only a couple will be still going after a year as there has to be ...access to food (cellulose) and moisture. These alates easily identified as compared to ordinary ants swarmers as termites have 4 wings all the same length and the wings fall off very easily, ants have 2 short and 2 long wing. Termites dont have a constriction between the thorax and the abdomen like an ant but more like a cockroach as they are from the same Order Blattodea. They usually swarm and there are thousands and thousands of them just before or after a storm when the conditions are similar to inside the nest about 90% humidity as they have really thin exo skeletons and they dehydrate outside of those conditions. A nest depending on the Genus can be on the side of a tree ( Microceratermes sp and Nasutitermes sp) in wood piles, tree stumps, live trees, suspended concrete floors with formwork left in place ( Coptotermes sp, Schedorhinotermes sp ) the last 2 are the most common and destructive. mounds on ground ( Microcera- termes sp Nasutiterrmes sp some Coptotermes sp) hetrotermes ferox are often found in small colonies underlogs, fence posts . Termites have a number of members or casts in the colony, there is the king and queen for reproduction. the queen can grow up to 15-20mm in length and have a hugh abdomen full of eggs and when she is in full production she can lay 1,000- 2,000 egs a day and can live up to 25 years. There are soldiers in the nest and their main purpose is to protect the nest they usually have a bigger head and coloured usually brown or dark brown to black de- pending on the Genus with large mandibles and they live up to 2 years. There are workers in the nest and they do all the work in the colony such as gather food and feed the other casts, build and repair the nest, tend the young termites and they can live up to 2 years as well. Alates are future kings and queens and are produced when the nest is 3 years or older when the nest is fully functional. Use our October Special to get rid of pests and get a Written termite report on your home.

02.01.2022 Equipment we use. Infrared Thermometer Healthy termite nests are usually temperature regulated at twenty-five to thirty-six degrees Celsius. Depending on the external temperature, a temperature increase above or below the temperature of the room may indicate the presence of termites in walls, floors, ceilings or other places in your house.... An Infrared Thermometer can be used to take the temperature of a certain point in the house. A section of the wall that is above or below the normal temperature may indicate that termites are behind/in it. This is a preferred method of finding termites, as it is a form of non-destructive testing. Once an irregularity has been found, further testing by an Infrared Imaging Camera can be done to get a detailed view of how the temperature is distributed along the area that looks suspicious.
