07.01.2022 On behalf of the family, I would like to say thank you for all the comments, messages and support we have received over the last 7 days. Special thanks to the Cawarral gang, Debbie & Angela, for organising a viewing of the service there. The service was good, a mix of tears, laughs and smiles with Dallo and Ron McKenna saying a few words and sharing memories. The eulogy delivered by long time family friend, Jason, and one of Johns grandsons, Darcy, doing a fine rendition of Dads poem written by Murray Hartin. He will always be remembered.
06.01.2022 We have received many messages and emails, read many comments about his influence, but this one says a lot. Without John I doubt Yancoal would exist today as it does. He was instrumental in getting us back underground after the Southland fire, famously ‘thumping the table’ and declaring well I believe it is safe when all and sundry (Regulator, Mines Rescue and the suite of consultants and ‘experts’) were dithering and finding roadblocks. Without this I doubt we would have... gone back in. On acquisition of the Southland Mine, the Austar fire panel goaf was still ‘smouldering’ and measuring quantities of ethylene and hydrogen. The Regulatory view at the time was that we would struggle to cut coal there again. The work done with the ventilation pressure balancing, nitrogen injection and seals, thermal camera’s, air free gas analytics and detailed training with John saw us back on coal in a couple of months. Some of these were innovative world first practices now adopted across Australia and globally. The rest is history.
