24.01.2022 A movie the kids will love for a worthwhile cause

22.01.2022 MEET THE STAFF: Gina Why do you think its important that kids learn music? "I think its important that kids get an opportunity to learn such a special craft, so they have a means to express themselves and have fun - whilst still doing something that is instrumental (pun fully intended) in their growth and development."...Continue reading

22.01.2022 Happy Wednesday

21.01.2022 We have a winner! Congratulations to HAYLEY SHIRDON, who wrote this wonderful entry on her piano teacher Emilia - term three lessons are ON US! Thanks to Hayley and everyone else who entered and WATCH THIS SPACE for more great opportunities to win. * "My favourite teacher at Joondalup Music is Emilia. I started lessons with her around a year and a half ago, as a timid musician without too much drive or passion for music, piano, performing or practice. Emilia has helped me ...not only greatly develop my practical skills, but my practice routine, motivation, performance standard and technique. I always feel encouraged during my lessons, and know that every week I get a tiny bit better at what I love. "Emilia has also helped me use the theory that I learn at school by putting it into context in pieces I learn, and I believe that I have become a more well-rounded musician because of this. When I started piano, I thought it was about memorizing pieces. I have since learned so much more about the complex and intricate world of music in my lessons, which has also benefited my classroom music at school. "Overall, Emilia is my favourite teacher at Joondalup Music, because of how she has revolutionised my attitude to music and piano. When I was younger, playing piano used to be a job for me, and I would have to force myself to practice. Thanks to Emilia, and her enjoyable lessons, choice of pieces, constructive feedback and positive teaching, my position has completely changed. I now look forward to the weekend not only because I have a break from school, but because I also have my piano lesson."

20.01.2022 MEET THE STAFF: Emilia What are your favourite things about being a music teacher? "I love opening up young musicians eyes to all the possibilities of playing the piano. I love to watch their eyes light up as I show them how they can play their favourite songs, and the connection (and often friendship) I build with all of my students."... How would you describe yourself as a teacher? "Im a very laid-back teacher - I understand that all of my students love to have fun in their lessons, and I understand how important a childs bond with their music teacher is. I always try and incorporate fun, yet relative, aspects into their lessons - such as learning the accompaniment to Taylor Swifts latest song, or analysing Adeles chord progressions, on top of important technical work and theory." How would you describe JSM? "JSM is such a great environment to learn music in. All the students are surrounded by great musicians and great music, and Ive lost track of the amount of times a student has stopped playing and said hey, I love this song!, or wow, theyre really good! when hearing fellow students in the rooms next door. I also love how the students are encouraged to participate in recitals and workshops - it fills both them and myself with so much pride in what they can do." Tell us a bit about yourself as a musician. "Im currently studying music at UWA, as well as performing in a few very different ensembles on the side. Ive been playing the piano since the age of 4, and attended Perth Modern School under the specialist music program, where I learnt the oboe, although I undertook my final WACE exams in piano. In 2011, I toured through Europe in specialist chamber choirs Schola Cantori and Chorus Angelicus, performing in many distinguished venues such as La Madeline, the Arc de Triomphe and Westminster Abbey. One of my favourite moments on stage happens every year at the ANZAC day service at the Esplanade, which I have been doing for the past eight years. The pride, honour, and community spirit that comes out every ANZAC day makes me so happy to be taking part. My favourite performance of all time was when I performed with a few of my classmates at the 2011 CHOGM opening ceremony, performing for The Queen, and ending with a collaboration with Guy Sebastian. It was a super rewarding experience, and showed me how many amazing doors have been opened for me purely because I started piano lessons as a child."

12.01.2022 MEET THE STAFF: Jay What are your favourite things about being a music teacher? "What I love most about being a music teacher is being able to share my passion for playing drums with my students and seeing them develop that same passion. Every student requires a personalised approach to development and no two lessons are the same - observing each students growth across many years of lessons and practice is extremely rewarding."... What have been your favourite moments teaching so far? "Every time a student of mine auditions and gets accepted into the conservatorium of music at WAAPA is an amazingly proud moment. Another favourite moment is working alongside a previous student for the first time at Joondalup School of Music." Tell us a bit about yourself as a musician: "I feel lucky to have shared some wonderful experiences on stage with great musicians and friends, touring the country and playing festivals such as the FUSE Festival in Adelaide and several WAAMI showcases. Other highlights include performing live on 96fm, as well as hearing my bands songs being played on Triple J and seeing video clips played on the TV show Rage."

10.01.2022 MEET THE STAFF: Krystal Why did you decide to start teaching music? "I was inspired by a few of my own singing teachers growing up - going to my singing lesson was the best part of my week. I wanted to hopefully inspire students in the same way."... What are your favourite things about being a music teacher? "Getting to teach what I love every day and seeing my students grow both in ability and confidence." What have been your favourite moments teaching so far? "Watching my students perform every year at recitals and blowing me away - I always remember the first time they sing their chosen song and then the final product on recital night after months worth of practise. Also every time a student gets a through an audition of some kind - for example high school scholarships, musical roles or into WAAPA."

05.01.2022 MEET THE STAFF: Skye Why do you think its important kids learn music? "Being a parent myself, I think its important for children to do an out of school activity that stimulates the brain rather than just physical activities like sport. And lets face it - music is fun, challenging and rewarding. Its also something you never master, so there is always more for them to learn and achieve."... What have been a couple of your favourite moments teaching so far? "I have had a couple of moments where a student really absorbs the lessons, the instrument and music in general. This is what keeps you going as a teacher, knowing that theres lots of people out there who just need a little guidance to become a proper musician. One of my previous bass students is now in a successful band which I was able to get her into, and another student was able to get into the Tafe music program through my assistance and lessons." How would you describe yourself as a teacher? "I would describe myself as a fun teacher who gets serious when required - I like to push my students who need extra motivation to achieve more. I love theory, so I enjoy teaching those who want to know the whys of music. As a working musician, I like to discuss how to play with others and write songs. I also really love teaching bass!!!" Tell us a bit about yourself as a musician. "Ive been playing guitar for 22 years and bass for 4 years. I love playing in original bands, and have been doing so for 11 years. Ive always written songs but dont do much singing - playing is the best part. I now play bass full-time in the band Aurora. "My favourite stage experience was playing in front of 300 people and proposing to my fiancee. And none of them knew. Not even the band. Thank god she said yes..."

05.01.2022 MEET THE STAFF: Josh How would you describe yourself as a teacher? "Im an enthusiastic, passionate and fun-loving music teacher, striving to treat every student as a unique individual in the way I work with them. I aim to inspire my students by sharing my knowledge and experience, and hopefully instilling in them a love for all things music."... Tell us a bit about yourself as a musician. "Ive always strived to be a versatile musician, playing three instruments from a young age (piano, drums and guitar). Over the years Ive had the privilege to gig in some of Perths finest venues for special events, weddings and corporate functions in solo, duo and full band settings. Im currently gigging with one of Perths leading wedding/event bands, known as Summer Club Band, performing around Perth and also around WA. On the side Im passionate about writing music, and regularly collaborate with local and overseas film-makers." What has been your favourite moment teaching so far? "At the end of year concert, the students backstage were being very noisy. So, in a moment of pure creative genius and after discovering a box of tinsel in a store room, I bargained with them - giving them the tinsel to play with in exchange for them keeping quiet. They agreed, and it worked!" How would you describe Joondalup School of Music? "Its a friendly and welcoming environment with a great team of quality music teachers. I remember attending Joondalup School of Music as a primary school student for piano lessons 18 years ago! It has always been a great place to go for music tuition and that hasnt changed - its track record speaks for itself."
