15.01.2022 SAPR (Stop Assess Proceed & Review) On-line Cloud Based Personal Pre-task Risk Assessment In order to encourage engagement and progression in the field of personal hazard awareness Jorren has taken the step to release its cloud based on-line SAPR process to the public for free. I believe that understanding the risks that effect safety is concern that all personnel share. As a result, companies invest a great deal of time and resources into workplace safety to minimise the ri...sks that employees face in their day-to-day work. One of the methods commonly used is to encourage workers to engage, pause and think about the potential dangers of performing a task, then take steps to minimise the risk before they begin. In most cases, employees are supplied with a "tool" such as a pocket-sized booklet containing safety hazard information and a check-list which helps them to identify potential hazards. Whilst this is recognised as an effective way of helping employees to keep safe at work, I have found from experience that after a time employees become familiar with the check-list and it becomes a tick and flick exercise with very little benefit over the long term. Little is gained from ticking boxes on such "tools" unless the user is actively engaged in the process. In order for an employer to engage the employee and have a positive effect on the behaviour of an individual at a sub-concious level, we need to be able to get the employee to start thinking about risks they face at a conscious level not solely sub-concious hazard recognition based on their lifes experiences. e.g. You walk into a room and see a stranger holding a bat ready to swing and staring at you. Fight or flight kicks in automatically, you see the hazard and very quickly assess the risk. As indicated above, people are great at recognising risks sub-consciously in an unfamiliar setting but not so good at identifying them at a conscious level in an environment that is familiar and where an individual feels comfortable. In order to engage employees Jorren has developed the SAPR process as the evolutionary big brother to current "tools" on the market. Rather than a Tick and Flick exercise, the SAPR asks the employee to follow a list of mental and collaborative steps and sequences to assess potential hazards at a conscious level rather than waiting for sub-concious recognition to kick in before the hazard is realised.
