25.01.2022 Just some casting tings with @troyv_ for a wrist scaphoid fracture 6 weeks post-injury. Dont always trust the result of an X-Ray (especially the first 7-10 days for a scaphoid fracture). In this case, Troys result came back negative but he still had significant ongoing wrist pain for 6 weeks. He followed up by getting a CT scan which confirmed a fractured scaphoid. Because the scaphoid is an area of the wrist that does not get a lot of blood supply, healing rates a po...or and you are at risk of necrosis of the bone. 22.01.2022 MINDSET IS EVERYTHING. When I was listening to Kevin Hart on The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast, two quotes stood out to me. The first was being told that if Im patient, I can recover fully and me instantly thinking in my head, I can actually be better than what I was. Being in the medical/health/wellness space, the words we choose to tell our patients hold a huge amount of weight, so we must be careful in how we deliver our messages. It could mean the difference b...etween a positive mindset which will eventually lead to a positive outcome and a negative mindset that can lead down a bad rabbit hole physically, emotionally and psychologically. Kevin Harts mentality about life being this game, resonates with me. A game that youre constantly trying to get better at each day, and trying to win every single day. There is nothing more powerful than being innately self-driven and self-motivated not only with rehab, but in life. The want to get better and to do anything possible to not only recover fully, but to be better. +5, +10, +20 of what you were. Not everyone has this mindset. But if you can tap into any positivity in a less than ideal situation, and let that drive you.. good things will come out of it. Here is what he wrote: If I were to limit why Im going to Philippines to play basketball to only one reason, it would to seize the opportunity God gifted me with to play the game that I love. The incision that is made (red line) during surgery can disrupt the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve. This leads to numbness on the shin demonstrated by the green circle. 04.01.2022 http:// ACL SURGERY - RESULTS AFTER 6 MONTHS. **** Only 1 out of 5 patients achieve symmetrical knee function 6 months after ACL reconstruction surgery *** 4093 patients who undergone hamstring tendon (93%) or patella tendon graft surgery were examined at 6 months post surgery on:... isokinetic concentric quads at 90deg/sec isokinetic concentric hamstring at 90deg/sec a single leg hop test Patients who reached a LSI (limb symmetry index) of 90% or greater in all 3 tests were considered to have achieved symmetrical knee function Results showed that patients in this study were more likely to have assymetry between legs with isokinetic quads and hamstring strength vs hop testing. Post-ACLR patients are more likely to pass hop testing than strict, isolated muscle performance measures as hop/jump testing are likely contributed from the hip and ankle. This information combined with studies that show ligamentization of the graft can take up to 1-2 years, suggest that this time frame is likely too early to return to sport for most individuals. 02.01.2022 Why you should do ladder drills as part of your return to sport rehab Besides being extremely fun to do, I use them as a great way to warm up the entire body, practice general footwork, as well as directional and multiplanar movement training. I love how it challenges me cognitively with the amount of focus and coordination required for the footwork placement Its a great way for me to get the heart rate up, improve blood flow and circulation to my soft tissue stru...ctures and work and improve reaction time. I can accomplish all the physiological needs of a typical warm up while training eccentric control, deceleration/acceleration, explosive movement patterns, proper landing mechanics, and multi-planar stabilisation. Ladder drills help me work on my balance, speed and quickness by training functional movement patterns required in sports that require high level changes in direction like soccer, rugby, oztag that include hopping, bouncing, running forward/backwards/sideways, stop-starts, explosive take-offs. Most importantly, they are great for injury prevention training. It helps me work on the weak, neglected muscle groups that help not only stabilise my knee, but my entire body, including hip abductor/adductor, deep abdominals and lower back stabilisers to remain balanced. Lean to much one way and my body has to work that much harder to go back in the opposite direction. It teaches me to stay balanced and light on my feet. I highly recommend giving ladder drills a go if you havent before. There are so many various movement patterns you can work with, and you can level up your ladder workout by incorporating more complex movement patterns, include some reaction training with a partner or add another task with a ball.
