23.01.2022 The ECQ has seen some misinformation circulating about eligibility for telephone voting. Telephone voting is a limited service specifically for our most vulnera...ble citizens. Find out more about eligibility here: https://bit.ly/3bsDJE2 We have increased capacity 10-fold to help extend the service to people who have been advised to self-isolate as a result of COVID-19, but we are being overwhelmed with people who are not eligible for a telephone vote, jeopardising the availability of the service for those who most need it. If you are able, vote in person. We have changed arrangements in polling booths in response to COVID-19, under advice from Queensland’s Chief Health Officer: https://bit.ly/3bDfkMr

23.01.2022 Thank you Team TPDD, it has been an effective and inspiring working relationship, I personally hope that we can continue to build upon the strategies and ideas that we have ready to implement.

22.01.2022 I was interviewed today on ABC news regarding the impacts of the coronavirus on the Douglas Shire. You can watch the interview here, starting at 39.18 minutes .

21.01.2022 As I reflect upon my current term of Mayor, and the campaign for re-election, I want to share my pride in what our Council has achieved, and my vision for my beloved Douglas Shire. It is a fact that Douglas Shire Council has never been in better financial shape. Under my leadership, Council has out-performed all predictions with a remarkable financial record, confirmed by internal and external auditors and the Queensland Audit Office. We are debt free, delivering reas...Continue reading

21.01.2022 While I am currently running a campaign for my re-election as Mayor of the Douglas Shire Council, I am compelled to focus on the absolute priority right now, assisting in managing the impacts of COVID-19 which are extraordinary and unprecedented. Drastic measures are absolutely necessary to save lives and slow down the spread of the coronavirus. We each need to strictly adhere to the new government directives, and follow the latest health advice without hesitation. Social... distancing will save lives and reduce transmission. We must constantly think about the most vulnerable in our community who will be the most affected. COVID-19 has changed everything in our lives. The rapidly evolving situation is severely affecting our way of life, jobs and economy. I am acutely aware that many local businesses, sole traders and individuals are finding it extremely tough. Indeed many of us are facing devastating impacts, with businesses closing and job losses increasing daily. Seeing the lines of people outside Mossman Centrelink this week has broken our hearts. We have a fantastic community spirit and resilience in the Douglas Shire. Never has this been so critical. Now more than ever, is the time that we must work together as a Shire, co-operate and support each other so we can get through this once in a century crisis. It is normal to feel anxious and fearful but there are ways we can continue to help each other out. I am so inspired by some of the locally grown positive initiatives that are emerging daily. In the last few days, I have been actively involved in teleconferences and meetings with Council staff, the State Government, fellow Mayors and relevant government agencies dealing with this crisis. Council has plans in place to ensure the continued supply of critical services such as water, wastewater, waste collection and disposal. Updates can be found on Council’s website and Facebook page. The incoming Council will work with our staff and relevant agencies on survival and recovery plans for our economic, community, human and social well-being. There has to be a focus on survival for the next six to 12 months, delivering our core services and supporting each other for however long it takes. As Mayor, my number one priority is the physical and mental health and well-being of all our residents, and the future of our businesses, employment and economy. As a community, in the past we've weathered the pilot strike, Global Financial Crisis, floods and cyclones. Now is not the time for added uncertainty. In dealing with this current public health and economic crisis, experience will matter.

14.01.2022 I was shocked this week to discover that my private emails have been hacked. This is a crime in Queensland and I have reported it to the relevant authorities. However, I am even more shocked that in the midst of the biggest health and economic disaster that we have ever experienced, that our Local Government election has descended to such a low depth. This is my fifth election campaign and I have never experienced such toxic tactics by my opponents. ... I have put politics aside all week to focus on assisting our community who are facing massive job losses, business closures and taking calls from residents who are understandably very fearful of the future. We must continue to protect the most vulnerable in our community by following expert health advice and work together to survive and recover from this crisis.

09.01.2022 Im sharing a wonderful suggestion from the inimitable Leigh Sales on her twitter account today: If you keep your job, and a small biz that you use regularly has to shut (eg beautician) - ask them if you can keep paying the same amount for your service but get a voucher to receive it down the track when they can operate. Means they don't take one huge hit now.

04.01.2022 Congratulations to Michael, Roy, Abigail, Lisa and Peter. I wish you all the best, particularly in these challenging times. Thank-you to the Douglas Shire community. It has been an absolute pleasure, and an honour, to be your Councillor since 2008, and Mayor for the last six years, since we took back our Shire. In successfully re-establishing the Council, I am proud of our many achievements and the fact that I pass on a Council in excellent financial shape. I want to sincere...ly thank my wonderful supporters, dear friends and colleagues who have been a joy to work with over many years. Thanks so much for your calls, emails, texts and messages over the last few days. They are all deeply appreciated. After 26 years at Council in various roles, I’m now looking forward to the next phase of my life. Stay safe and look after each other, so we can all emerge stronger. See more

01.01.2022 Flags down at Four Mile Beach Surf Life Saving Queensland will move all volunteer beach patrols and lifeguard services to surveillance patrols at Four Mile ...Beach from tomorrow (Saturday March 28). The change will mean lifesavers and lifeguards will still be ready to respond, however to avoid people congregating in close proximity there will be no red and yellow flagged designated swimming areas.
