19.01.2022 Looking for a fun activity for the weekend? Why not encourage your budding biologists and go whale watching. Each year humpback whales migrate along our coastline from May to November. The great news is, they are on the increase, so spotting one is now even more likely. Follow this link to learn more about a citizen science project that helped discover that migrating humpback whale populations on the east coast, have grown to an estimated 30 000 whales!... https://lighthouse.mq.edu.au//Rising-whale-numbers-a-bonus See more

17.01.2022 April JSA cancelled: As you may be aware, the University has amended their timetable so that the recess scheduled for April has been moved forward. This means that the University break no longer aligns with the April school holidays. The Junior Science Academy relies on students to help staff the program, so we now have insufficient staff to run the April program. This, combined with the current social distancing requirements, has resulted in us cancelling the April program. We have not made this decision lightly and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to you returning to the Junior Science Academy for a future program. All bookings have now been refunded.

15.01.2022 The JSA would have started this morning if COVID-19 had not made this impossible. What this circumstance has shown us all is how important logical and scientific thinking is. It is only another 10 years or so and JSA students could be scientists, technicians, engineers or medical professionals. I hope everyone is paying attention to how important these roles are in our lives right now and that children are seeing that they could be these superheroes in the future.

15.01.2022 We had some special visitors at lunchtime today.

15.01.2022 This years National Science Week theme is Deep Blue. This theme holds a special place in my heart. As a coordinator for a Science Education program, you might not be surprised that I love science. The passion began early, with the ocean. As a young girl, my Dad would show me the weird and wonderful creatures of the rock pools. I grew to obsess over the amazing creatures in the sea. Ive had many adventures with the wonders of the ocean. Now, I am lucky enough to share my pa...ssion with the next generation. Moral to my story? Give your kids experiences in as much as you can. You never know what they will fall in love with and what change they might bring to the world! Ps... this is me with a humpback whale in Tonga, when I was lucky enough to go on a research trip learning about whale song. Where will your adventure begin and where will it take you?

12.01.2022 Our holiday vacation care, multi-sport and Junior Science programs all start today. See you there!

12.01.2022 Sometimes its difficult to easily explain the JSA. Its simple to say that it is a school holiday program in science for primary age children. It is deeper and broader than this. It is for early career teachers and for children. Over the next couple of days, you will see posts where the JSA team writes what they think we achieve for children and teachers. Wed love to hear your ideas too.

08.01.2022 Children are capable learners and often want to know more about how their world works. To explain what evidence is known at this time and how they can discover new information is important for their long-term confidence and aspirations with STEM fields. Because of this, we encourage play, exploration, doing, time for reflection, active pedagogy, and low tech to understand the high tech or the complex.

08.01.2022 Two blood cells met and fell in love. Alas, it was all in vein. The Human Circulatory System class is running tomorrow where we explore how energy moves around our bodies, the contents of blood, and what really gets blood moving . Plenty of places still available in a variety of classes this week.

08.01.2022 Schools out, were in! Enrol in a science or robotics class in January now.

06.01.2022 JSA classes make great gifts (especially the last minute kind). They might not need more toys or plastic stuff and you can give them fun, wonder, learning, and knowledge. Tell any family members or friends what days your children are available in January to make it even easier for them!

03.01.2022 Stay tuned. Details of a competition to be released here on Wednesday. Hint: Professor Butts

02.01.2022 Setting up our electrophoresis experiment in our class Call the Doctor to diagnose sickle cell anaemia disease.

01.01.2022 The JSA supports student teachers or recent graduate teachers to become more confident science teachers. We have online and face to face training, prepared lessons and resources and team-teaching support in small classes. Its a supportive teaching environment to allow developing teachers the mind space to focus on their pedagogy and engaging with their students. We dont do science shows - children do, explore, and play.

01.01.2022 Happy Monday at home - how are the ideas for your Rube Goldberg Machines coming along?
